Original self portrait sketch on a doily placed in an oval rough hewn wooden frame on a green background. The frame and painted back give the self portrait a folk art quality

      - Covarrubias moved to New York on a grant from the Mexican Government in 1924. He is renown for his drawings that captured the cultural activity of the Harlem Renaissance in his book, "Negro Drawings." (1927). He was a regular illustrator on the covers for "Vanity Fair," "Vogue," and "The New Yorker," designed costumes for Josephine Baker, and generally popularized the art and cultures of the Americas and of Bali. He was interested in the ethnology of Mexican culture and posited that Mayan culture was preceded by Olmec culture, discounted at first but now known to be accurate. It is thought that his stylistic concerns drew him to study Mexican and also Balinese ethnography. Although still regarded as a caricaturist and illustrator since the majority of his output falls into these categories, Covarrubias is being reconsidered as a multidimensional Modernist working in many forms.

Provincetown Playbill: A Leaflet Issued with Each New Production at the Provincetown Playhouse - Season 1923-24 No 5

[New York]: Provincetown Playhouse. 1924. Playbill for the Provincetown Playhouse production of All God's Chillun Got Wings by Eugene O'Neill. Octavo. Single sheet folded twice to form six pages. Fine. A program for the original run of this controversial 1924 play about a black man who aspires to be a lawyer but is abused by his white wife who is infected by society's racism. The production was immediately lambasted by critics and the public for miscegenation, most notably for a scene in which the wife kisses her husband's hand. An early play of O'Neill's featuring Paul Robeson who also starred in the revival of The Emperor Jones the same year and would soon solidifie his fame in Show Boat. The playbill includes a cast list along with small text pieces from W.E.B. DuBois ("The Negro and Our Stage"), John Masefield ("Tragedy"), a poem from Langston Hughes ("The Negro Speaks of Rivers"), and lyrics to the Negro spiritual that provides the play's title. Rare. OCLC locates one copy. .

THE FIRE IN THE FLINT (Signed)

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1924 - Signed. The first book by this important leader of the American civil rights movement. As a young man, he joined, at the behest of James Weldon Johnson, the national staff of the NAACP in 1909, in the association's early days. He was to become its Executive Secretary, and during his near 25 year tenure, it was he who really constructed the fight against segregation in public places. Of mixed race, his name is almost ironic -- as he could pass as a white man, and as such worked as an "undercover agent" for the NAACP investigating lynchings in the South.~White's first book, and one of the early products of the Harlem Renaissance, with a warm and personal inscription.         A Summer on the Test

London: Philip Allan & Company Quality Court, 1924. First edition, no. 78 of an edition of 300 copies, signed by the author. With 12 original drypoint etchings by Norman Wilkinson, printed from the plate, and other illustrations in the text. xiii, [iii], 198, [1] pp. Printed by Southampton Times Limited. 1 vols. Large 4to. Half burgundy cloth and green gray cloth, uncut edges. Spine a bit sunned, lower corners slightly bumped, else fine. An Angling Classic, with Derrydale Associations A splendid book, with Wilkinson's evocative etchings. Major the Right Honourable John Waller Hills qualified as a solicitor but spent most of his career in Parliament as an MP, Privy Councillor, and Financial Secretary to the Treasury. In addition the present volume, and books on finance and horse racing, he wrote A History of Fly Fishing for Trout (1921) and River Keeper (1934). He died in 1938, just before he was due to receive a Baronetcy; instead, this was conferred on his five year old son, with the Major's wife being accorded the style and title of a widow of a Baronet. Notes Robb, "This is very exceptional, if not unique ... his merit was equaled by his popularity; he was given the significant and familiar name of "Jack" Hills."In 1931 Eugene V. Connett, proprietor of The Derrydale Press, imported some unsold copies of A Summer on the Test for sale to his customers, subsequently prompting Frazier to list it in his enumeration of Press titles as "an important and beautiful Derrydale related item". He also notes that in addition to a plain green cloth binding this book "comes in at least one variant binding in cloth which simulates a three-quarter leather binding", as in the copy offered here. Siegel notes that Connett's copies "were not marked in any manner that would enable one to identify them as being imported for The Derrydale Press".Not a Derrydale, but at least a distant relation, and a very nice copy of, as Robb puts it, "one of those volumes one loves to count among his treasures."

Very slight rubbing to spine ends and minimal fading to spine otherwise a gilt-bright and near fine copy."In an attempt to reinvigorate the market for gift books after the war, Hodder & Stoughton resumed the publishing of Kay Nielsen’s books, though on a more modest scale. In 1924 they published a work that Nielsen had begun in 1912, Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales, including sixteen stories illustrated with twelve watercolors. Nielsen returned to London, and in 1925 his final book for Hodder & Stoughton, Hansel and Gretel, appeared with twelve color plates" (Susan E. Meyer, A Treasury of the Great Children’s Book Illustrators, p. 206).Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen’s designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen’s objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story’s emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).
