      Jonathan Cape 1924 - FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, frontispiece and decorative border to title-page with decorations at head of each text page, a little very faint foxing to prelims and pencil note identifying Lawrence to title-page, pp. 158, foolscap 8vo, original quarter yellow cloth with green boards, backstrip with printed label, a touch of wear to one corner, edges roughtrimmed, dustjacket with darkened backstrip panel frayed at either end with some loss at foot, a little chipping to corners and darkened overall, good. A presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title by Charlotte F. Shaw (the wife of George Bernard Shaw, and a close friend and correspondent of Lawrence's) to J.G. Wilson of Bumpus - likewise a close friend, who would go on to be Lawrence's executor: 'J.G. Wilson from Charlotte F. Shaw, 13 March 1929'. Lawrence's very free translation of 'Le Gigantesque' was taken on to fill his time following expulsion from the RAF, but became a burden: he complained to Cape that 'at last this foul work' was 'complete.         Early Connecticut Architecture [Elephant Folio Loose Prints, Both Sets] in Original Brentano's Box

Full sized loose prints in original Brentano's cardboard shipping portfolio circa 1931; these are not the smaller books, but the original prints. Drawings reproduced to true scale, full size profiles. The First and Second series complete, consisting of 25 plates in the first (1924) and 20 plates in the second (1931). All 21" x 15", all in near fine to fine condition, with light foxing to the title page of Series One and Plate 20 of Series Two. Both sets were limited editions. Seldom found in this condition. Second series is quite scarce. Far too large for flatbed scanning, even on a large format scanner; see digital photographs. J. Frederick Kelley, AIA, shows his studies of architectural details on a number of named early New England residences in these sets; Kelly (1888-1947) was an early twentieth century New England architect noted for, in addition to his seminal books, critiques, and these prints, restoration of such historical homes as Harrison House in Branford, CT., a circa 1725 Classic colonial saltbox which is now a tourist attraction, and the circa 1639 Henry Whitfield House in Guilford, CT, the second restoration of which he executed in the 1930's. In accordance with his specialty, the prints in these sets are primarily residential in nature. Difficult find in this condition. l-lrt

Notated in black ink over traces of pencil. On lightweight paper with 16 printed staves per page. Scored for mezzo-soprano and piano. Autograph monogram and date to lower edge of p. 4; small erasure to p. 3; manuscript identification "La Parra" at head of first page. Several corners lightly creased and/or turned. . Possibly unpublished, although both songs may have been included in one of the song collections listed in Grove (96 songs in 8 volumes, 1926 or 7 mélodies, 1927. Not in Grove, Worldcat, MGG I, Pazdírek, or the Bibliothèque Nationale online. A French composer admired by Ravel, Laparra "studied with Gédalge, Fauré, Lavignac and Diémer although his music, with its constant reference to Spanish dance, must surely owe a lot to Albéniz. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1903 for his cantata Alyssa... His early career was mostly devoted to opera.         Iraq Command - Report October, 1922 - April, 1924

Wire-stitched in the original printed blue-grey card wraps. 2 large folding coloured maps - Map No.1, scale 1:1,000,000, area approximately bounded by Baghdad in the north-west, Kirmanshah in the north-east, the Darb Zobeidah in the south-west and Kuwait to the south-east; Map No.2 on the same scale, extending north from Baghdad to the Turkish border - each opening c.710 × 610 mm. Staples rusted, wraps variably browned , and a little rubbed, light toning of the text, due to their size the maps have started to pull loose from the staples, but on the whole remains very good. First and only edition, print-run of 375 copies, and commensurately uncommon with just the BL on Copac and OCLC. Official publication - the maps were originally classified 'Confidential' - "promulgated for the instruction and guidance of all concerned", and containing Air Vice-Marshal J. M. Salmond's report covering the establishment and early operations of Iraq Command. At the end of WWI, in the face of swingeing defence cuts, the newly-amalgamated RAF began to take the lead in "Imperial Policing" operations. With the outbreak of the Great Iraqi Revolution n 1920, Churchill, as joint Secretary of State for Air and Secretary of State for Air, called upon Trenchard to repeat the success of the aerial campaign against the "Mad Mullah" in Somaliland in pursuit of British policy objectives in Iraq. By 1922 the entirety of operations were consolidated in the hands of Iraq Command, and over the period covered by this document they were operating on several fronts; against the original uprising around Baghdad; countering Sheikh Mahmud Barzanji's insurgency among the Kurds, and the Turkish intervention on his behalf; and carrying out bombing runs against the Wahhabist Ikhwan raiders crossing the borders from the Najd. The concise, but highly informative, 68-page text combined with the superbly detailed maps gives an excellent picture of the all of these operations, which lead Salmond to conclude positively on the future for such commands; "I am well aware of the caution which must be exercised in forecasting, however, tentatively, changes and innovations in the methods of war … But I venture to think that when the peculiar value and suitability of air power, both for the direction and conduct of small warfare, is more generally understood, important changes may take place alike in its tactics and in the composition of the force employed".         Life Savers Promotional Photo Archive

      1924-1955. A collection of more than 150 promotional photographs and advertising mock-ups of Life Savers Candies from the 1920s to the early 1950s housed in three binders, including magazine spots, signage, counter displays, and in-person sampling, as well as celebrity endorsements and product placement in motion pictures. The photographs measure between 3.5" x 11.5" x 14". Most are loose, with a third of them mounted on artists boards and about a dozen with backmarks from various photographers, such as Guy Gillette, Hyman Fink, and Ewing Galloway. Overall near fine with scattered wear at the corners and creases to several of the oldest images; many of the mounted photographs have been touched up with China white or gray paint to highlight, crop, or remove details for publication, which was typical for print reproduction at that time.Life Savers were a ubiquitous part of American culture during the early and middle parts of the 20th Century and this collection of photographs documents their popularity with numerous signs, window displays, bill boards, bus ads, counter displays, and at point-of-purchase via "sample girls" who distributed the candies in the 1920s dressed in custom Life Savers outfits and with a custom Life Savers car. The collection also features numerous Hollywood stars holding the candy such as Jack Benny, George Raft, Lou Costello, Ralph Edwards, and Edgar Bergen with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. There are also a number of stills that showing the candy in films such as The Crooked Way (1949), Gun Crazy (1950), Red Light (1949), One Too Many (1950), Quicksand (1950), Destination Murder (1950), and A Bullet for Joey (1955).This collection was likely owned by a representative from an advertising agency that worked for the Mint Products Company, which owned Life Savers, or possibly the company's own in-house marketing department. In addition to the advertising mock-ups are photographs of the Mint Products headquarters in Port Charles, New York, and over 30 photographs (and seven negatives) showing the workers and machinery used to produce the candy.       - Der italienische Komponist Luigi Nono (1924-1990) entstammte einer alteingesessenen venezianischen Familie, studierte Komposition bei Gian Francesco Malipiero am Konservatorium in Venedig u., auf Wunsch des Vaters, Rechtswissenschaften in Padua mit abschließendem Diplom. 1946 lernte er Bruno Maderna kennen, bei dem er privaten Kompositionsunterricht nahm. Beide besuchten 1948 zur Biennale in Venedig einen Dirigierkurs bei Hermann Scherchen, den Nono anschließend auf eine Konzertreise nach Zürich u. Rapallo begleitete. Über Scherchen erhielt Nono Zugang zur deutschen Musiktradition insbesondere zu Musik u. musikalischem Denken der Zweiten Wiener Schule. 1950 nahm er erstmals an den Kranichsteiner/Darmstädter Ferienkursen für Neue Musik teil, wo seine Kanonischen Variationen über eine Reihe von Schönbergs op. 41 unter Scherchens Leitung uraufgeführt wurden. An diesen Kursen nahm er regelmäßig bis 1960 teil, dabei wurden sieben seiner Kompositionen aufgeführt, von 1957 bis 1960 war er dort auch als Dozent tätig. Zusammen mit Karlheinz Stockhausen u. Pierre Boulez galt er in den 1950er Jahren als einer der führenden Vertreter der neuen Seriellen Musik der so genannten Darmstädter Schule. Ab 1960 wandte sich Nono, beginnend mit seiner ersten Tonbandkomposition Omaggio a Emilio Vedova einer bis zu seinem Tode anhaltenden Beschäftigung u. Erforschung mit den Möglichkeiten der Elektronik in der Musik zu. Nono begann im Freiburger Experimentalstudio der Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung zu arbeiten. Die dort entstandenen Werke bewegen sich zum Teil am Rande des Hörbaren. In den 1970er Jahren hatte Nono den Philosophen Massimo Cacciari getroffen, mit dem er in den folgenden Jahren eng zusammenarbeitete. So stellte Cacciari auch das Textmaterial für Prometeo.       Tallinn: Pro Peller 1924 - Quarto, wrappers, 112pp. Cover, 15 half-page and one full-page abstractions by Jaan Vahtra. Possibly the most ambitious publication of the Estonian avant-garde and certainly one the most inventive in terms of page design and graphics published in Tallinn of the 1920s, with very fine abstractions by Vahtra throughout. Johannes Barbarus (pen name of Johannes Vares,1890-1946) was one of the foremost poets of the era, who was a doctor by profession and a radical politician. He was appointed Prime Minister by Zhdanov under the first Soviet invasion in 1940, fled to the USSR when the Germans occupied Estonia and returned in 1945, only to come under suspicion by the NKVD for earlier activity in the Estonian War of Independence. He committed suicide in 1946. Barbarus is an anti-lyricist here, shaking Estonia out of its enclosed sleepy culture into the international arena. Jaan Vahtra (1882-1947) was one of the most original talents of Estonian modern art and a leading member of the GEA movement at the time. This is some of his finest graphic work. A rare and critical document, hailed as one of the most important constructivist manifestos to arise in Estonia, “Estonia’s first pure collection of metropolitan poetry” (Hennoste). No library holdings in North America and only one copy found outside of Estonia.         Theodore Dreiser's Banned "Genius": A pamphlet defending the work, [with] typescript copy of letter on banned books, two handwritten ALS, and signed personal postcard

      New York:. 1924.. Very good condition. In 1916, Theodore Dreiser's autobiographical novel "Genius", which among other topics, examined traditional and modern views of sexual morality, was deemed blasphemous and obscene by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, and banned. This pamphlet, written by Elias Rosenthal, defends Dreiser's banned work with specific reference to the overreactions of vice societies to the work: "This brings me down to the action of the locally organized vice society in Cincinnati, which discovered in Theodore Dreiser's "The Genius" seventy five passages which it considered "lewd",and seventeen "profane", all of which when examined proved to be nothing more than accurate comments on passing phases of life. .... what is needed is some strong bug powder, not for the purpose of sterilizing the book, but of dispersing its assailants." The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice threatened to prosecute the publishers on similar grounds. Sml. 8vo pamphlet, (nd) ca. 1915, 8pp. Original yellow wraps; no title at spine, with one horizontal fold and address and canceled stamp at rear cover, o/w very good. Addressed to George Jean Nathan "of the Smart Set", founder and editor of the American Spectator and good friend to Dreiser and Ernest Boyd. The typescript copy of a letter from Dreiser to Gelett Burgess, Vice President of the Authors' League of America attacks the organization for not representing authors in cases of government censorship and banning: "....your organization runs safely and only with those who concern themselves with the safer & more popular forms of light fiction..." (p1). 4pp. 8 1/2 x 11". Additional correspondence, from Dreiser to his friend Ernest Boyd, signed; One page hand written letter signed by Dreiser, dated March 12, 1924, apologizing for missing an engagement, "regards to the Boyd", another addressed to Mrs. Boyd about a gentlemen's dinner, dated Feb. 20- 1925, both from 1799 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn; and a real photo postcard from Trondheim, Norway to Boyd, signed by Dreiser, dated 1924, to Ernest Boyd.

        Life Savers Promotional Photo Archive

      1924-1955. A collection of more than 150 promotional photographs and advertising mock-ups of Life Savers Candies from the 1920s to the early 1950s housed in three binders, including magazine spots, signage, counter displays, and in-person sampling, as well as celebrity endorsements and product placement in motion pictures. The photographs measure between 3.5" x 11.5" x 14". Most are loose, with a third of them mounted on artists boards and about a dozen with backmarks from various photographers, such as Guy Gillette, Hyman Fink, and Ewing Galloway. Overall near fine with scattered wear at the corners and creases to several of the oldest images; many of the mounted photographs have been touched up with China white or gray paint to highlight, crop, or remove details for publication, which was typical for print reproduction at that time.Life Savers were a ubiquitous part of American culture during the early and middle parts of the 20th Century and this collection of photographs documents their popularity with numerous signs, window displays, bill boards, bus ads, counter displays, and at point-of-purchase via "sample girls" who distributed the candies in the 1920s dressed in custom Life Savers outfits and with a custom Life Savers car. The collection also features numerous Hollywood stars holding the candy such as Jack Benny, George Raft, Lou Costello, Ralph Edwards, and Edgar Bergen with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. There are also a number of stills that showing the candy in films such as The Crooked Way (1949), Gun Crazy (1950), Red Light (1949), One Too Many (1950), Quicksand (1950), Destination Murder (1950), and A Bullet for Joey (1955).This collection was likely owned by a representative from an advertising agency that worked for the Mint Products Company, which owned Life Savers, or possibly the company's own in-house marketing department. In addition to the advertising mock-ups are photographs of the Mint Products headquarters in Port Charles, New York, and over 30 photographs (and seven negatives) showing the workers and machinery used to produce the candy. A charming collection of vintage advertising image from one of America's most iconic brands. .

        The Two Jungle Books With Illustrations by J Lockwood Kipling, C I E , and W H Drake

      London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1924., 1924. FIRST EDITION thus; Thin paper edition in one volume, with coloured frontispiece, in original illustrated jacket. Publisher's gilt decorated red cloth shows a little marking to covers, gift note to flyleaf, bookseller ticket. Jacket corresponds, with some minor wear to spine tips else an excellent example. Most uncommon in the dust-wrapper; this edition is embellished with a striking Detmold colour plate and full-colour jacket design. The 'Jungle Books' is a collection of short stories, the best-known being the three tales revolving around the adventures of the abandoned 'man cub' Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other stories are probably 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi', the story of a heroic mongoose, and 'Toomai of the Elephants', the tale of a young elephant-handler.
