He was artistic director of the weekly @O Espectro (1925). Valença also published illustrations in numerous special Christmas issues of the @Diário de Notícias as well as @Comércio do Porto. He illustrated many books, including some for Emília de Sousa Costa, Julieta Ferrão, Alfredo França, Armando Ferreira, Augusto Cunha, Cruz Magalhães, Henrique Marques Junior, Luís Chaves, Magalhães Lima, Tomás de Eça Leal, etc. His work also appeared in @Rire (Paris); @Boletin Fermé (Barcelona); as well as many newspapers and reviews of Rio de Janeiro.

Introduction d'André Citroën, l'organisateur du raïd. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Sichel und Hammer. Illustrierte Internationale Arbeiter-Zeitung (Complete III. Jahrgang, containing 12 Issues of the Periodical)

Internationale Arbeiterhilfe für Sowjet-Russland, Berlin 1924 - Scarce, complete run from Oct. 1923 - October 1924 of "Sichel und Hammer" (Sicle & Hammer), a precursor of the Communist periodical "Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung" (AIZ). The history of the periodical begins in 1921 during a mass starvation in Volga region of the young Soviet Union Lenin's plea to the working class for solidarity and support. The "Internationale-Arbeiter-Hilfe" (IAH) was founded by Willi Münzenberg to help with the problem. In support of the organization, the monthly periodical "Sowjetrussland im Bild" was founded in Germany in the fall of the same year, published by the "Auslandskomitee zur Organisation der Arbeithilfe für die Hungernden in Russland." The paper informed the public on problems, social issues as well as progress in the Soviet Union. By 1922, the periodical also reported on events in Germany & other countries and was renamed "Sichel und Hammer." The content of the paper was still heavily propagandistic but novels, poetry and artists such as Maxim Gorki, George Bernard Shaw, Käthe Kollwitz, George Grosz and others added an artistic layer to the periodical. By 1922, about 10,000 issues were published, two years later the number climbed to 180,000. In 1925, the paper appeared in a different layout every other week under the new name "Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung." Thus began a rapid ascent from a relatively small periodical to a highly successful political 'socialist' paper. By the time Hitler came to power, the publication reached over half a million copies. Contents in our issues cover important historical & social events such as Lenin's death, the Hitler-Putsch trial in 1923, a memorial on Rosa Luxemburg, a major earthquake in Japan, economics in America, and much more (detailed contents below). Illustrated with many b/w reproductions of photographs showing Lenin, Hitler, Ludendorff, Stalin, Fritz Ebert, Mussolini at the 1 year anniversary of the Fascist takeover, President Woodrow Wilson at the White House, Lenin's successor Rykow, George Grosz, Henri Barbusse, Charlie Chaplin, Russian actor Moskwin, Heinrich Zille, Hilde Schewior, Anatole France, Henry Ford, Leo Trotzki, Willi Münzenberg (who founded the periodical), Alexander Moissi with the Tolstoi family, Henry Marty, Artur Mahraun, Rasputin, Rosa Luxemburg, Lenin's partner N. K. Krupskaja. Other photographs depict defendants of the Hitler-Putsch trial (Wagner, Pernel, Brückner and a very young Ernst Röhm), Lenin's lifeless body & his funeral, "Gewerksschaftshaus" in Berlin by architect Max Taut, New York City skyline, Brooklyn Bridge, Woolworth building, a Ku Klux Klan meeting, Nazi funeral, laying a wreath at Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg's grave, Hitler-Brigade controlling the border at Thuringia, and many others. Also contains b/w photographic reproductions of art work by Otto Dix (Der tote Soldat), Käthe Kollwitz (Die Überlebenden and Bauernaufstand), George Grosz (Sonntagsspaziergang), Diego Rivera, Theophile Steinlen, Heinrich Zille, Hans Baluschek, A. Birkle (Die Arbeitsmaschine), Georg Scholz, Otto Nagel (Der Jubilar), Rudolf Schlichter, Honoré Daumier, as well as a few anti-Nazi caricatures. Interesting articles include the Hitler-Putsch, Lenin's death, "Lenin auf der Tribüne," by Leo Trotzki, the Worowski murder, corruption by the Zsar, and many others. Text in German.Issues 1 - 4 in smaller format (9" x 11 1/2"). Numbers 5 - 12 larger format, measuring 10 3/4" x 15". Nr. 1-3 with "Deutsche-Ausgabe, Sowjet-Russland im Bild / 3. Jahrg." on cover. From issue 5 on "Sichel und Hammer, Illustrierte Internationale Arbeiterzeitung. Neuer Deutscher Verlag." printed on front. All issues with 16pp., including original front and rear covers, stapled and bound in marbled paper-covered boards with cloth spine. Some issues with the original tipped-in red advertisement bands. Boards almost detached. 3/4 of bottom part of cloth spine missing. Remnants of handwritten title-label present hear head of spine. Small stamp of "Sozialwissenschaft [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Two Jungle Books. With Illustrations by J. Lockwood Kipling, C.I.E., and W.H. Drake.

London: Macmillan and Co. Limited, 1924., 1924. FIRST EDITION thus; Thin paper edition in one volume, with coloured frontispiece, in original illustrated jacket. Publisher's gilt decorated red cloth shows a little marking to covers, gift note to flyleaf, bookseller ticket. Jacket corresponds, with some minor wear to spine tips else an excellent example. Most uncommon in the dust-wrapper; this edition is embellished with a striking Detmold colour plate and full-colour jacket design. The 'Jungle Books' is a collection of short stories, the best-known being the three tales revolving around the adventures of the abandoned 'man cub' Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other stories are probably 'Rikki-Tikki-Tavi', the story of a heroic mongoose, and 'Toomai of the Elephants', the tale of a young elephant-handler.

The Great Western Railway Painting Book

Dean & Son Ltd for the Great Western Railway, London - [1924], 16pp, 11" x 8.5", illustrated card covers, 18 completed colour illustrations of of railway related scenes (Caerphilly Castle, guard's van, the cab, motoring from the station etc) with blank outlines to copy. In fine condition, with a hint of wear (no child's paint brush has been anywhere near it!) and a neat inscription at the top of the first page. Although the inscription dates it to 1924, it was not actually advertised by the GWR until the December 1925 issue of the Great Western Railway Magazine. Even then it was incorrectly referred to as 'All About Railways' although this was corrected for the advertising in the 1926 and 1927 editions of 'The Literature of Locomotion'. A spectacular and rare piece of GWR publicity - this is only the fourth example I have seen in over 25 years - and one in unused condition must be exceptional if not unique. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Wonderground Map of London Town.

London: The Westminster Press, [1924].. Overall dimensions 75 x 94.5 cm. Large comic pictorial plan of London, printed colour, folding into the original envelope repeating a section of map to the upper cover. The envelope split along the edges and very worn with some loss to the upper cover, a neat repaired tear to the upper cover, the map with some wear at the intersection of two folds towards the upper left, otherwise a very good example of a fragile item. This iconic and hugely popular illustrated map of the city was first published in 1914, with this second state published ten years later to coincide with the opening of the British Empire Exhibition. Buildings are shown in profile and the railway stations highlighted in the red and blue livery of the London Underground - each one named on a banderole adjacent. The coat of arms of the City of London surmounts the upper edge with those of the principal surrounding boroughs to the corners and lower edge. All vibrantly coloured and medievally styled with a suitably bold palette of red, green, blue and yellow. The map is peppered with comic scenes and references, some more easily interpretable than others, so many that viewers are entreated: "You have not the time to admire it all? Why not take a map home to pin on your wall!".

MY COUSIN PHILIP: BEING THE LIFE STORY OF PHILIP RIVERS PATER, SQUIRE AND PRIEST, 1834-1913. By Roger Pater [pseudonym].

London: Burns Oates and Washbourne Ltd., 1924 - Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi-viii] 1-259 [260: blank] [261-263: ads] [264: blank], original decorated red boards, front, spine and rear panels stamped in black. First edition. A novel about the fictional 'clair- audient' priest whose supernatural encounters are recorded in MYSTIC VOICES: BEING EXPERIENCES OF THE REV. PHILIP RIVERS PATER, SQUIRE AND PRIEST 1834-1913 (1923). The story is told in the first person by Roger Pater. " . the supernatural material is more implicit than explicit, but with, nevertheless, supernatural episodes and stories in the text." - Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 89. "To understand and appreciate MYSTIC VOICES fully, one must also read MY COUSIN PHILIP, especially for chapter 15, entitled 'A Sixth Sense,' an amplification of the introduction to MYSTIC VOICES that presents in detail Pater's psychological theories of clair-audience. Most important are the specific references to most of the individual stories as examples of the three classes or theories of clair-audience. MY COUSIN PHILIP is so well handled that one could very easily believe it the biography of a real person." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 317-8. "After R. H. Benson, the best examples of religious supernaturalism; 'In Articulo Mortis' and 'A Porta Inferi' are minor classics." - Robert Knowlton. Pater was first revived by Montague Summers in his influential anthology, THE SUPERNATURAL OMNIBUS (1931). Some authorities incorrectly give the author's name as "Hudlestone." Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 144. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 404. Private owner's name and address at upper edge of the front free endpaper. A couple of mild marks to boards, light foxing to page edges, mild tanning to endpapers, a very good copy. Much, much scarcer than MYSTIC VOICES. (#130806) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
