ARABIAN NIGHTS. Tales from the Thousand and One Nights

London Hodder & Stoughton n.d. (1924) - First edition. With 12 beautiful mounted colour plates by Edward J. Detmold with the original tissue guards with captions. Large 4to, publisher’s original white buckram decorated with elaborate all-over gilt pictorial designs and lettering on the upper cover and the spine, in the rare publisher's box printed on the upper cover in gray/green and with a pastedown Detmold colourplate. [viii, 240. An extremely fine copy, as near as pristine as could be hoped for, clearly this book has only rarely been outside its original box, the plates fresh and perfect, the gilt on the binding and the white cloth essentially as new, the prelim leaves only with just faint traces of the foxing which commonly plagues this title. The rare box is very attractive, the lid skillfully, unobtusively and sympathetically reinforced with binders cloth, as are the corners of the box. A STUNNING COPY, WE CAN'T REALLY IMAGINE ONE BETTER, THE BOOK VERY SCARCE AND IN THIS CONDITION EXCEPTIONALLY RARE. Detmold's illustrations are rich with color and reflect well the oriental splendor of the tales. THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is one of Detmold's most elusive titles and is one of the finest examples of the artist’s abilities. His 12 colour plates to such well loved stories as ‘Sindbad, ‘Ali Baba’ and ‘Aladddin’ rank among the best of illustrations from a period often considered the golden age of illustrated literature. Despite the effort taken on the part of the publisher to produce these beautiful books they have always been prone to foxing, and the use of white cloth has always been risky. Thus, copies are typically found with considerable mellowing and soiling. This copy we dare say has spent very little time outside of the box which has protected it so well for nearly a century and is truly an exception to the general rule.         The Rubáiyát of 'Umar Khaiyám

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head Limited,, 1924. translated from the French of J. B. Nicolas by Frederic [sic] Baron Corvo, together with a reprint of the French text. Edited with notes and a comparative study of the original texts, and an introduction by Edward Heron-Allen, F.R.S. With sixteen illustrations in colour by Hamzeh Carr. Large octavo (182 × 260 mm). Bound by Bayntun-Riviere in red half morocco, red cloth sides, titles and decoration to spine gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Frontispiece with tissue-guard and 15 illustrations in colour by Hamzeh Carr. Some minor wear to tips and spine ends, edges and endleaves foxed, some sporadic faint foxing to contents. A excellent copy, attractively bound. First Carr illustrated edition, the second edition of Corvo's translation with a new introduction and illustrations. His prose translation was undertaken at the suggestion of Henry Harland and Kenneth Grahame, and first published in 1903. Rolfe's is the earliest complete English translation of Nicolas's rendering, but its elaborateness and verbal inventiveness did not sell on first publication. The book was made more saleable by the evocative illustrations of Hamzeh Carr (Hamzeh Abd-ullah Kar).

1924 Ohio Photo Album with Auto Racing Images

[Elyria, Ohio. 1924]. Oblong large octavo. Leather-textured paper over boards. Commercially produced blank book with "Photographs" in gilt on front board. 61 black and white images. Various sizes, most 2.75" x 4.5". Some sunning, one image is creased, overall very good. Perhaps a quarter of the images are captioned in the margins. Perhaps the most interesting are 18 images are of racing automobiles and their drivers including the Nash pace car; additionally their is a splendid (but unfortunately the aforementioned creased) image of a policeman on an Indian Motorcycle writing a ticket out to a motorist. Other images include additional auto shots, the interior of an Ohio YMCA, Indian teepees, and additional photos of policeman. The owner (and presumably the photographer of most of these images) was named Henry, and there is some evidence he was a policeman. The location of many of the images is in Elyria. Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. .

        [Original Drawing]: The White Snake

(1924). Original pencil drawing illustrating a scene from: "The White Snake" by the Brothers Grimm. The drawing measures about 3.5" x 3.5" on a 5.5" x 7.5" sheet, tipped into a mat frame. Near fine. Signed by Gaskin with his initials and date. An English illustrator, painter, and designer of jewellery, enamelwork, and books, Gaskin was a member of the Birmingham Group of artist-craftsmen, which sought to apply the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement across the decorative arts. In the 1890s he caught the attention of William Morris, who arranged for him to design the pictures for two Kelmscott Press books: The Well at the World's End and The Shepheard's Calendar; the latter is described by Gordon Ray as "perhaps the most successful of Kelmscott Press illustrations." A fine, late drawing by Gaskin, who died in 1928. .

        When We Were Very Young

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1924. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and pictorial designs to boards gilt, top edge gilt. Housed in a mid twentieth-century blue cloth box. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Extremities a little worn, sine faintly darkened, endpapers lightly tanned, a couple of middle hinges starting but still holding firm. An excellent copy in a rubbed and toned box fraying at edges. First trade edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author to Elliott Beach Macrae, who would become his publisher in the US in 1944 as head of E. P. Dutton. The inscription, written as a poem on the front free endpaper, reads: "Though Beach Macrae / Be bald or grey / Or Elliot Beach / Be a little of each / Whatever his age, I shall say / 'Good luck to Elliot Beach Macrae'. Feb. 17th, 1931. A. A. Milne". Elliott Beach Macrae (1900?-?) had already proven himself in a succession of roles at E. P. Dutton when he became its third president, succeeding his father, who had himself succeeded the firm's founder. When Milne wrote the inscription he had good reasons to thank Macrae Jr. and wish him luck as the success of When We Were Young in the US - 260,000 copies had been sold in the US by 1927 - owed a great deal to the "extraordinary enthusiasm of Macrae …, who was then sales manager and sent copies of the book to anyone he thought would talk about it" (Thwaite). In 1947, while on a visit at Cotchford, Macrae spotted the original soft toy incarnations of Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga and Eeyore looking rather worse for wear in Milne's living room. Macrae then had the extraordinary idea to send the five toys on a tour of America. Milne accepted and produced hand-written "birth-certificates"; upon arrival in the US the five toys were insured for the considerable sum of $50,000. The tour was another big publicity success for Macrae and lasted several years, the five friends regularly coming to rest at the Dutton offices and finally settling down in a glass cabinet at the main branch of the New York Public Library. With Macrae's ownership signature dated spring 1930 on the front free endpaper verso. A beautiful copy and a fine association with regard to the publishing history of the Pooh books. This copy is in the rare first state, without the page number on the contents page (p. ix).
