London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1924. No. 111 OF 500 COPIES OF THE EDITION DELUXE, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST n. Hardcover. 318 x 260 mm (12 1/2 x 10 1/4"). 197 pp. No. 111 OF 500 COPIES OF THE EDITION DELUXE, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. Publisher's deluxe binding of full vellum, upper cover with gilt-embossed vignette (replicating the title page), flat spine with gilt tree at foot and gilt titling at head, top edge gilt. Engraved illustrated title page, engraved tailpieces, 16 full-page black and white engravings, and 12 color plates by Kay Nielsen. Front free endpaper with remnants of bookplate. Hint of splaying to boards, gilt on spine a little muted, otherwise only the most trivial imperfections; a nearly fine copy, very clean and fresh inside and out. This appealing edition of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen is illustrated by his fellow Dane, Kay Nielsen, whose popularity during the early 20th century "golden age of illustration" rivaled that of Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac. Born in Copenhagen to a theatrical family, Nielsen (1886-1957) studied art in Paris, where he became quite interested in Japanese and Chinese paintings. The influence of those styles can be seen in the color plates here, while the monochrome works are reminiscent of illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. When the popularity of extravagantly illustrated gift books began to fade in the 1930s, Nielsen moved to California, where he worked for Disney Studios, contributing illustrations for "Fantasia" and other animated films. The tales collected here include "The Real Princess" (better known as "The Princess and the Pea"), "The Snow Queen," "The Red Shoes," and "The Nightingale," Andersen's tribute to the famed Swedish singer Jenny Lind, who had gently rebuffed the lovestruck writer's advances.

Set of Eleven Photographic Negative Prints of Hands.

Berlin c.-1930 1924 - Photographic negative prints of Paul Wolff, Theodor Echtermeyer, Peter Schmidt, Alexander von Rothe, Eugen Fischer, Prof.Dr. Ludwig Heck, Wilhelm Filchner, Prof. Hans Friedenthal, N.N. Godbole, Alfons Goldschmidt and August von Parseval hands. Size: 21.cmm by 17.4cm approx. Collected by German palmist Marianne Raschig who spent 60 years taking more than 2,000 hand prints of around 1,000 leading artists, actors, scientists, musicians and writers in Berlin. Raschig collected the hand prints between the 1870s and 1930s for a study into what the lines and shapes of hands could reveal about a person's character. Palm readers believe that every person's hands has a series of 'lines' and 'mounts' which reveal their personality traits and even predict their future. Raschig published her study in a 1931 book Hand und Persönlichkeit (Hand and Personality) which is still used today.

ARABIAN NIGHTS. Tales from the Thousand and One Nights

London Hodder & Stoughton n.d. (1924) - First edition. With 12 beautiful mounted colour plates by Edward J. Detmold with the original tissue guards with captions. Large 4to, publisher’s original white buckram decorated with elaborate all-over gilt pictorial designs and lettering on the upper cover and the spine, in the rare publisher's box printed on the upper cover in gray/green and with a pastedown Detmold colourplate. [viii, 240. An extremely fine copy, as near as pristine as could be hoped for, clearly this book has only rarely been outside its original box, the plates fresh and perfect, the gilt on the binding and the white cloth essentially as new, the prelim leaves only with just faint traces of the foxing which commonly plagues this title. The rare box is very attractive, the lid skillfully, unobtusively and sympathetically reinforced with binders cloth, as are the corners of the box. A STUNNING COPY, WE CAN'T REALLY IMAGINE ONE BETTER, THE BOOK VERY SCARCE AND IN THIS CONDITION EXCEPTIONALLY RARE. Detmold's illustrations are rich with color and reflect well the oriental splendor of the tales. THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is one of Detmold's most elusive titles and is one of the finest examples of the artist’s abilities. His 12 colour plates to such well loved stories as ‘Sindbad, ‘Ali Baba’ and ‘Aladddin’ rank among the best of illustrations from a period often considered the golden age of illustrated literature. Despite the effort taken on the part of the publisher to produce these beautiful books they have always been prone to foxing, and the use of white cloth has always been risky. Thus, copies are typically found with considerable mellowing and soiling. This copy we dare say has spent very little time outside of the box which has protected it so well for nearly a century and is truly an exception to the general rule.         1924 Ohio Photo Album with Auto Racing Images

[Elyria, Ohio. 1924]. Oblong large octavo. Leather-textured paper over boards. Commercially produced blank book with "Photographs" in gilt on front board. 61 black and white images. Various sizes, most 2.75" x 4.5". Some sunning, one image is creased, overall very good. Perhaps a quarter of the images are captioned in the margins. Perhaps the most interesting are 18 images are of racing automobiles and their drivers including the Nash pace car; additionally their is a splendid (but unfortunately the aforementioned creased) image of a policeman on an Indian Motorcycle writing a ticket out to a motorist. Other images include additional auto shots, the interior of an Ohio YMCA, Indian teepees, and additional photos of policeman. The owner (and presumably the photographer of most of these images) was named Henry, and there is some evidence he was a policeman. The location of many of the images is in Elyria. Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. .
