        Über Quantenmechanik [On Quantum Mechanics]

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1924. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF BORN'S NEW MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF QUANTUM PHYSICS, INCLUDING THE FIRST USE OF THE TERM "QUANTUM MECHANICS." "An important paper by Born published in August 1924 took its starting point in the 'considerable progress' made with the BKS theory and Kramers' use of it to explain the dispersion of light. Born's paper, entitled 'Über Quantenmechanik,' merits attention not only because it introduced 'quantum mechanics' as the name for the quantum theory of the future, but also because it was a serious attempt to formulate the general structure of this still unborn theory" (Helge Kragh: Niels Bohr and the Quantum Atom)."In June 1924, Born completed his paper 'On quantum mechanics.' In this article Born tried to establish a method by which the classical perturbation theory of multiple periodic non-degenerate systems could be applied to quantum phenomena which involve external periodic disturbances or internal couplings. So far, Born argued, theories of poly-electronic systems, such as the helium atom, which treated the electronic interactions along classical lines, had to fail since electrons affect each other with frequencies of the order of those of light, but the interaction between matter and light is evidently a 'non-mechanical' quantum process; one cannot expect, therefore, that the interactions between electrons can be treated along classical lines either. Born now suggested a solution of the problem by generalizing Kramers' treatment of the interaction between radiation and electrons into a 'quantum mechanics' of interactions. In carrying out this program, Born showed that the transition from classical mechanics to what he called 'quantum mechanics' can be obtained in accordance with Bohr's correspondence principle if a certain differential is replaced by a corresponding difference ..." (Jammer, Conceptual Foundations of Quantum Mechanics, pp. 191-2).OFFPRINT FROM: Zeitschrift für Physik, Band 26, No. 6, pp. 379-395. Berlin: Julius Springer, 1924.         The Marble Faun.

Boston: The Four Seas Company, 1924 - Octavo. Original mottled green boards, white paper title labels to front board and spine printed in green. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Front hinge starting, small production flaw to rear hinge, small tear to the top of the front joint of the jacket, but a stunning copy of a famously vulnerable publication. First edition, sole printing, presentation copy of Faulkner's first book. This copy has been inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Dink Cearley from Bill Faulkner" and also signed and dated 31 December 1924 on the title page. C. L. ("Dink") Cearley was in 1924 the 19-year-old son of Abb W. Cearley (69 years old, married at age 36) and Mollie Cearley. Abb was the jailor in Oxford, Mississippi, and would probably have been elected to that position. Abb and Mollie were both born in Mississippi, as were all four of their parents. The Cearley family (including several siblings) lived on the premises of the jail. In 1931 there is a record of a minor ($2) payment to a Mr Woodward "in the Dink Cearley Case" and there are occasional references to Cearley Service Station, but otherwise the family seems to have lived quietly. The fact that Faulkner uses the familiar form of his own forename suggests that he was on easy terms with the younger Dink. Faulkner employed the unusual forename for the character Dink Quistenberry in The Town, who marries into the Snopes family and runs the Jefferson (formerly Snopes) Hotel. The Marble Faun is the author's first book, of which only 500 of the projected 1,000 copies were printed and some 300 of those were later pulped. The official publication date was, after some delay, fixed as 15 December 1924 and the earliest dated presentation copies were signed on the 19th. With thanks to John Ward, professor in the English department at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, CT, for information about the recipient. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

Manufacturer of Coin Operated Machines, Post Cards and Penny Arcade Supplies. The Largest Plant Manufacturing Legal Amusement Machines and Penny Arcade Supplies in the U.S.A.

Exhibit Supply Company, Chicago 1924 - 8vo. 19.5 by 12 cm. 12 pp., wraps. Photo images, two per page, of sundry card dispensers and fun fixtures, some of which are long forgotten and no inhabitants of what penny arcades survive, although there may be distant descendants which have comparable gimmickry. Examples: The Radio which vends a love message and photo, or a "Duoscope", a drop machine holding two sets of views. The Gypsy Fortune Teller is something that might be in the memory banks of people still alive. Regardless, a trade catalogue for these kind of novelty machines is a scarce thing, and this particular one, especially. No copies of this, or any of the companies' promotions of amusement machines pre-1970, listed on OCLC. The brochure touts its machines as "an investment" and speaks of the "money earning power" of its machines. Light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        When We Were Very Young.

1924 - London, Methuen & Co. Ltd. 1924. 8vo. Original royal blue cloth panelled in gilt with gilt vignettes to covers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, plain white endpapers as issued, preserved in a handsome twentieth-century slipcase with dark blue morocco spine and 5 raised bands over blue cloth, vertically ruled in gilt to sides, lettered gilt in compartments, with internal blue cloth-covered chemise, by James Macdonald Co., New York; pp. [vi], vii-x + [ii] + 99 + [i]; illustrated throughout in line by Shepard; both externally and internally a fine, fresh copy with minor bruising and rubbing to spine ends, a neat contemporary gift inscription, dated 1924, to front free endpaper, and the usual faint toning to free endpapers with negligible internal cracking, but overall an unusually handsome copy. First edition. The first of Milne's celebrated quartet of children's titles, and by far the scarcest, being issued in a very small edition of only 5,175 copies. Its success took the publishers completely by surprise as it reportedly sold out on its publishing day and was reprinted three times in one month. It has been referred to as the most significant children's book since Alice. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        When we were very young.

London Methuen & Co 1924 - First edition, first issue with no roman numerals on Contents page, 8vo., frontispiece and illustrations by E.H. Shepard, some quires opening but still strong, original blue cloth blocked and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, some bumping and rubbing to extremities and corners, otherwise very good; preserved in a custom-made slip-case. "the greatest children's book since Alice" The Times. 'They're changing the guard at Buckingham Palace- Christopher Robin went down with Alice.' A very good example of the first and rarest of the Christopher Robin books, increasingly hard to find in the first issue state, some 5,175 were printed and sold out in one day, November 6, 1924. Consequently by the end of the year over 53,000 copes had been printed but the second print-run included the roman numeral ix on the contents page. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A BRIEF CORRESPONDENCE between "KING KONG" CO-DIRECTOR & AVIATOR MERIAN C. COOPER & Lecture Agent JAMES POND.

New York, 1924 to 1927. [1924]. [1924]. - - A brief correspondence between the aviator/film director Merian C. Cooper and James Pond regarding arrangements for a series of lectures by Cooper. The letters, dating from September 18, 1924 through May 5, 1927 include an Autograph Letter Signed by Cooper and a lengthy note penciled by Cooper at the bottom of a list of lecture venues, 3 Typed Letters Signed for Cooper by his secretary and carbon's of Pond's letters and replies. The correspondence here begins with a short Typed Letter Signed for him by Cooper's secretary, dated September, 1924. Cooper mentions enclosing a check for an ad in Pond's catalog and requests to see the blurb "before having it set up". On January 19th, 1925, Pond writes that he made arrangements & started booking venues following Cooper's assertion that he [Cooper] had arranged with Famous Players to use his films in conjunction with his lectures. Subsequently finding out that Famous Players has severely limited where Cooper could lecture and what material he could use, Pond was able to back out of all but one engagement in Buffalo and requests that Cooper make a special effort to follow through with this one. On March 28th, Pond again requests a response from Cooper. Cooper then replies with a lengthy note penciled in his hand at the bottom of a list of venues. Except for Buffalo, most of the venues are geographical or scientific societies which Famous Players will allow with major restrictions. Cooper writes: "There will be no public admissions - no publicity unless Famous wishes. If you have objections the only date arranged is with the Buffalo Club - a society club - which was arranged before signing contract". In a Typed Note Signed for him by his secretary, Cooper urgently requests that Pond let him know "if traveling expenses are included" before turning down the "Lancaster date". A brief note by Pond on April 20, 1925 mentions enclosing the contracts for Buffalo & Bridgeport. In a brief letter, penciled and signed in full by him, Cooper writes that he will be "available next week except Thursday the thirtieth" and that he will train a substitute for that date. This letter is accompanied by a carbon of a letter to a "Mr. Beulah" neatly typed by his secretary and dated April 20, 1925. On February 21st, 1927, Pond writes to invite Cooper to join him as his guest at the Circumnavigators Club dinner. Replying in a typed letter signed for him by his secretary, addressing Pond as "Dear Jim", Cooper writes: "I would like like Hell to go to the Circumnavigators dinner but I am right in the midst of trying to complete a book, finish the picture.". On May 5, 1927, Pond, eager to have Cooper become a member, again invites the aviator/director to join him for a subsequent Circumnavigators' Club dinner and suggests that Cooper is "eligible for membership in this Club. It is a most amusing one and I think you would like to know the bunch."Pond's retained carbon copies of his letters are chipped with several short tears to the edges. Merian Cooper's letters and notes are in otherwise very good condition. The American producer & film director Merian C. Cooper (1893-1973) was also an aviator. He served as a DH-4 bomber pilot during the First World War. Shot down by German troops, he served the remainder of that war in a POW camp. Following the war, he joined the Kosciuszko Squadron, a group of volunteer Americans which supported the Polish Army in the Polish-Soviet War. He was once again shot down and, this time, incarcerated in a Soviet POW camp. Escaping after 9 months, he was subsequently decorated with Poland's highest military award the Virtuti Militari. He enlisted and served as a Colonel in the Second World War and assisted in setting up the Assam-Burma-China Ferrying Command and led many missions. Before and after the Second World War, Cooper produced movies for RKO. His most memorable production was "King Kong", a film which he co-wrote, co-directed and in which he also played an acting role.
