Pictorial Map of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields

Johannesburg.: Gold Producers Committee.. 1924.. Folded color lithographic pictorial map, 8 x 24 inches. The color map depicts, in a central position, the city of Johannesburg. Floating above the city is the text: "Johannesburg, the World's Premier Gold Mining City." In the extended environs surrounding the city 16 or more gold mines are identified. Text blocks connected with each mine provide the number of employees ("Europeans and Natives") and the value of the gold extracted in each of the mines to date. Excellent clean condition. The map depicts pictorially "the tableau exhibited by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines." Text in English and Afrikaans. Text on verso (English and Afrikaans) details unfolding events in a narrative titled: "Twenty-four Hours on a Witwatersrand Gold Mine." This is a highly uncommon pictorial map: there are no WorldCat listings for a map with this date, and just two for the more readily available map of 1932, which is an entirely different production, schematic rather than pictorial. Scarce, and in pristine condition. A valuable addition to libraries with holdings emphasizing the history of South African gold mining. Near fine condition. .

First [blank] leaf has a small rectangular piece of wood attached by a piece of later thin wire (replacing the original wire which had succumbed) next to an ink inscription: "To Charlotte Fleming at Lincoln's Tomb April 30, 1925. accompanying a piece of wood from Lincoln's Springfield home. H. W. Fay." Embossed stamp at top of the leaf: H. W. Fay Custodian Lincoln's Tomb Springfield. Illinois." OCLC has an entry for a 1924 edition of this oft-reprinted pamphlet which is described as having "a piece of wood (in pocket). We assume that those pieces were also from Lincoln's home. Fay apparently also dispensed on a limited basis copies, such as this one, with a piece of wood from Lincoln's home attached by wire to selected visitors. In this case, Fleming was the teenage daughter of Joseph Barclay Fleming, an important Chicago lawyer.

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1924., 1924. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED by the author and his wife. Octavo, pp.[vi]; 250. Bound in publisher's back cloth, with gilt titles to spine. Illustrated with nine black and white photographs. Some spotting within, binding is rubbed, boards a little bowed, joints starting at headcap, neat owner name to flyleaf. A good copy vastly improved by the author's inscription to the title page; with our united kind wishes / Arthur Conan Doyle. / Jean Conan Doyle [in her hand]. Doyle's personal account of his travels through the West Coast of the United States and Canada on a lecture tour concerning the spiritualist question. Jean Doyle remained in Sussex when Sir Arthur embarked upon his American journey and according to his biographer Russell Miller, Doyle's letters home were reminiscent of those of a lovelorn teenager, even alluding to sex upon his return (The Adventures of Arthur Conan Doyle/Harvill Secker). The combination of signatures on this, of all titles, therefore renders this a most interesting item

Livres

        THE ILLITERATE DIGEST

Albert & Charles Boni, New York 1924 - Blue cloth with a white cloth spine and somewhat larger than the trade edition. Illustrated with drawings. Copy #40 of 250 copies SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper. Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists and member of the Cherokee Nation are rather uncommon. Spine a little soiled, some sunning to the board edges. Near Fine, lacking a dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

(Einleitungsnotiz Picabias). Lang fr
