Paris: Auguste Blaizot, 1924.

        The Lives of Gallant Ladies.

Waltham St. Lawrence: Privately Printed for Subscribers Only at the Golden Cockerel Press, 1924. One of 75 special copies. Translated by H.M. & F.M. 10 wood engravings by Robert Gibbings. 2 volumes. Printed in black and green. One of 75 special copies printed on Van Gelder paper, signed by the translator, F.M. and Robert Gibbings. 26 x 19 cms, quarter bound in parchment with blue paper covered boards. Some marking to the spine but generally very goo.d With the booklabel of the collectors W. and PJ Kupfer and with the notice printed at the Press and signed by Gibbings regarding the limitation. De Bourdeille, abbot of Brantome, wrote this piece of erotic literature in the 16th century but it was not published until late in the 17th century and then not often afterwards due to its immorality. The charm of the writing is the complete unconsciousness that anything is wrong in any of the conduct he writes about - promiscuity, lesbianism, sado-masochism etc.

Gesammelte Werke.

Paris, Librairie Orientaliste Paul Geuthner, 1922-1924. - Large 8vo. (2), IV, 98, (6) pp. (4), XV, (1), 502, (2) pp. With 23 photo illustrations and 11 drawings (some in colour) on plates. Original printed wrappers (rebacked) and original illustrated coloured wrappers, both bound within uniform modern half calf. First printed edition of the "Hilyat al-fursân wa-shi'âr ash-shuj'ân", an abridgement of Ibn Hudhail's horse treatise, prepared around 1400. In facsimile throughout. Includes the first French edition of the same. "Ibn Hudhail flourished at Granada under the reign of Muhammad V (king from 1350 to 1362) who ordered him to write a treatise on jihâd [.] The treatise contains two parts of which the first deals with the military art and the second, with hippiatry. Now, some time later, under the rule of Muhammad VI, King of Granada from 1392 to c. 1408, a second treatise was composed which was largely an abbreviated copy of the second part of the first one [. Mercier's] French translation [of this treatise] is a very valuable contribution to our knowledge of Muslim civilization [.] The editor has apparently made deep study of many other Arabic treatises of the same kind, from the earliest ones down to very modern ones [.] This enables him to add much information of Muslim origin in the footnotes and appendixes, and this to give the reader some knowledge of the hippiatric literature available in Arabic [.] The sixth and last appendix is probably the most interesting, being a historical sketch of Muslim hippiatry throughout the ages. This is followed by an abundant bibliography, which forms a very valuable supplement to the enormous hippiatric bibliography recently published by General Mennessier de la Lance: it is not restricted to European publications but contains as well a long list of Arabic works [.] Mr. Mercier's studies are of special interest to students of the Arabic language and of Muslim culture. To show their cultural importance it will suffice to recall that the horse is almost a sacred animal in Islam. The Prophet clearly expressed the divine will with regard to this [.] Historians of science must know of these studies" (George Sarton, in: Isis, Vol. 8, No. 2 [May 1926], p. 346-349). - Finely bound, untrimmed copy, very clean throughout.         Old New York: False Dawn, The Forties; The Old Maid, The Fifties; Old New York, The Sixties; and New Year’s Day, the Seventies

New York: D. Appleton, 1924. First editions of each of the four volumes that compose of Edith Wharton's Old New York. Octavo, four volumes; original blue cloth; original slipcase. Each volume is in near fine condition with the original dust jackets which show just a touch of rubbing and wear. The original slipcase is in very good condition. The nicest example we have seen or handled. The four short novels in this collection by the author of The Age of Innocence are set in the New York of the 1840s, '50s, '60s, and '70s, each one revealing the tribal codes and customs that ruled society, portrayed with the keen style that is uniquely Edith Wharton's. These novellas are vintage Wharton, dealing boldly with such themes as infidelity, illegitimacy, jealousy, the class system, and the condition of women in society. Included in this remarkable quartet are False Dawn, which concerns the stormy relationship between a domineering father and his son; The Old Maid, the best known of the four, in which a young woman's secret illegitimate child is adopted by her best friend -- with devastating results; The Spark, about a young man's moral rehabilitation, which is "sparked" by a chance encounter with Walt Whitman; and New Year's Day, an O. Henryesque tale of a married woman suspected of adultery. Old New York is Wharton at her finest.

Its backbone was the collection of Wyndham Law of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, and included oil paintings, watercolours, sketches, prints and photographs, most of which are based on landscape scenes of the South China trading ports in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of British activities in China.. The Chater Collection was dispersed and largely destroyed during the Japanese occupation, and only 94 pieces (now an important part of the collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art) are known to have survived (Wikipedia).       A. Plicque & Cie, 1924. - A. Plicque & Cie, Paris 1924, 24x27cm, broché.
