        Ulysses

1924 - JOYCE, James. Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1924. Square octavo, contemporary full maroon cloth, black morocco spine label, marbled endpapers; original paper wrappers bound in. Housed in custom slipcase. $25,000.Fourth Shakespeare and Company printing of Ulysses, issued just two years after the first, inscribed on the front flyleaf, "To A.K. Griggs, James Joyce, Paris 16.vi.934." With original wrappers bound in. Any copies of Ulysses inscribed by Joyce are extremely rare."Universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" (Grolier Joyce 69). After working for seven years on Ulysses, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Joyce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world of 1922". Then began the great game of smuggling the edition into countries where it was forbidden, especially England and the United States. The contraband article was transported across the seas and national borders in all sorts of cunning ways"." (de Grazia, 27). "Universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" (Grolier Joyce 69). The contraband article was transported across the seas and national borders in all sorts of cunning ways"." (de Grazia, 27). "The fourth, fifth and sixth printings were issued in white covers with the title and author printed in blue". The fourth and fifth were printed on a thick paper of inferior quality" (Slocum A17). Recipient Arthur Kingsland Griggs edited and translated several works, including Léon Daudet's Memoirs, and also wrote the popular guidebook Paris for Everyman. Original wrappers bound in.Light embrowning and minor chipping (largely confined to the first few leaves) to fragile text, as usual. Moderate marginal stain to page 33, touching still easily legible text. Minor restoration to inner paper hinge at front flyleaf, barely affecting the "P" of "Paris" in Joyce's inscription. Copies of Ulysses inscribed by Joyce are extraordinarily rare. A handsome copy, most scarce and desirable inscribed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

A unique item. <p>A child prodigy, Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944) was an American composer and pianist and the first successful American female composer of large-scale classical music. Born in New Hampshire, she was able to sing over 40 tunes by the age of one and could improvise countermelody by 2 years of age. Teaching herself to read, she was composing waltzes by the age of 4 and was performing public piano recitals, playing Handel, Beethoven, Chopin and her own compositions, by the age of seven. Moving to Boston in 1875, she studied piano with Ernst Perabo and Carl Baermann and later studied composition for a year with Junius W. Hill. Otherwise self-taught, she learned by studying great classical pieces. She made her professional piano debut in Boston in 1883 and soon after appeared as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After her marriage to Dr. Henry Harris Aubrey Beach in 1885, she agreed to limit her performances to one a year and devoted herself to composition. Her first real success came 1892 with the performance of her "Mass in E-flat major" by the Handel and Haydn Society which established her an one of America's foremost composers. She composed "Jubilate" for the dedication of the Woman's Building at the Columbian Exposition. After her husband's death, she toured Europe as a pianist to establish her reputation as a pianist and composer. Returning to American she spent time at the MacDowell Colony in Perterborough, NH and later became the composer-in-residence at New York City's St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. She died of a heart attack in 1944 and was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1999.

        In Excelsis.

London: Martin Secker,, 1924. Octavo. Original yellow buckram, titles to spine and front gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Minor partial toning and spotting to endpapers, an excellent copy in the jacket which is somewhat stained on the spine panel and lightly rubbed at the extremities, but on the whole very smart. First edition, first impression, signed limited issue, number 8 of 100 copies signed by the author. With the very scarce dust jacket. In Excelsis is Lord Alfred Douglas's sonnet sequence written while imprisoned in Wormwood Scrubs Prison for libelling Winston Churchill. Douglas had accused Churchill of being party to a Jewish conspiracy to rig the stock market by falsely reporting defeat in the Battle of Jutland - the same old story as is told of the Rothschilds after the Battle of Waterloo. In spite of this somewhat unpropitious reason for his being there, Douglas claimed to have profited from his six months incarceration, not least in discovering "the theology ... of the Catholic Mystics", which he explores in the poems. The affirmative title is of course a deliberate inversion of his erstwhile lover Oscar Wilde's production from jail, De Profundis.

Brunnenburg castle became the home of Pound's daughter (with the violinist Olga Rudge) Mary de Rachewiltz and her husband the Egyptologist Boris de Rachewiltz. After Pound's return from the United States he stayed with his daughter at Brunnenburg in 1958, and wrote the last 6 of his 116 Cantos there.
