Autograph letter signed ("G. Bernard Shaw"). Highland Hotel, Strathpeffer, 29. VII. 1924.

1924. 8vo. 2 pp. In postally used oversize registered envelope. In green morocco slipcase. To Archibald Henderson, one of Shaw's chief U. S. advocates and biographer. Shaw notes that he encloses (not present) "what I have been able to do at odd moments and on rainy days to fill up that book for Harper. I can do more, and ought not to have done this, as it involved postponement of more important work for which I was too lazy. As to the agreement [...] the thing you sent me is absurd: Harper thinks he can escape his legal responsibilities by making a private agreement with someone to indemnify him, a proceeding which exposes him to prosecution [...] all he can exact from an author is an assurance that the book does not contain any hidden libel. For all overt libel, sedition, blasphemy or obscenity the publisher and printer are liable [...] Harper probably thinks that he could murder me and have you hanged for it if he could produce an agreement to that effect [...]". He thanks Henderson for some notes on "the New York Joan", and asks after Mrs. Henderson, mentioning his hopes that this reaches him at Skyland (North Carolina). - In 1925, Harper & Bros. published "Table Talk of G. B. S. Conversations on Things in general Between ... and his Biographer", by Archibald Henderson (1877-1963), professor of Mathematics at the University of North Carolina. - On Highland Hotel stationery.

ARCTIC ORPHANS Verses by ... Illustrations by N[ancy] Parker.

Landscape 4to. Unpaginated. 13 chromolitho. plates printed by M'Lagan & Cumming, numerous b/w. ills. Some light browning, very good in original boards, very lightly browned, with minimal wear to spine.Scarce. Enchantingly illustrated story of three polar bear cubs temporarily orphaned whilst their parents are off hunting for dinner, and the ensuing chaotic adventures that unfold until the (surprise surprise) safe return of mum and dad. 'The Parkers' quirky stories in verse about animals are popular with collectors of picture books. But it's hard to find out anything about the creators of Arctic Orphans, History of the Hoppers, Lays of the Greys, or Cinderella at the Zoo in the standard reference works. Until recently it was not known if the Parkers were men or women, one of their letters sold at Sotheby's London on November 11, 1996 presenting their aunt with a copy of a new book revealed that they were sisters named Bessie and Nancy.'         Author's Original Corrected Proofs and Associated Matter for: DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMANDEMENT. Paris, Bernard Grasset, [1924].

1924. Ca. 130 leaves, plus numerous inserts and pasteovers. Octavo. Original publisher's letterpress proofs, with authorial corrections and revisions (including substantial insertions and deletions) throughout, with leaves and slips of typescript (many with additional manuscript additions) inserted, bound up with preliminary drawings for the layout of the title leaf and ornaments. Full deep red brown crushed levant by La Haye, with geometric inlays in red and medium brown morocco extending across boards, with doublures with matching red morocco inlays, t.e.g., others untrimmed. One joint a bit rubbed, some spotting along top edge of upper board, with small ink drop on spine, internally very good consistent with nature of material. Maurois's set of corrected galley proofs for this work, the preliminaries mock-ups still reflecting the working title, NICIAS TROIS DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMANDMENT. While the proofs show the usual corrections of mechanicals and the like, Maurois also chose to substantially edit and rework the text in a number of places by way of pasteovers and inserts (including in one instance three full quarto leaves of typescript, and several other instances of almost full leaves of single-spaced typescript). He made substantial deletions of a number of long passages and the original text remains completely accessible. An inserted preliminary bears Maurois's caption title for his work in his hand (including two additional alternate titles), and his presentation inscription: "Pour Jean Lévy-Strauss, ami du livre et de l'auteur, en affecteux souvenir". - Talvart & Place notes the preparation of fifteen copies of the text prior to correction for circulation hors commerce; the corrected text for which these proofs and leaves of manuscript/typescript evidently served as basis was published in the distinguished Les Cahiers Verts series.

The Diary of a Country Parson

      - London - Macmillan & Co., 1924 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition (second impression) of the famous diary of James Woodforde, the 18th century English parson, attractively presented in mottled quarter calf. This is the edition through which Woodforde's diary became widely known, having previously resided in its original manuscript form at the Bodleian Library. It was compiled and edited by John Beresford, who rather underestimated the success it would enjoy. It hasproven lastingly popular because of the unpretentious and curoiusly intimate insight it gives the reader: both into the life of the charming Woodforde, and into his gentle 18th century English world. One example: 25 Jan. 1795 - We breakfasted, dined &c. again at home. The frost this Morning more severe than Yesterday. It froze the Chamber Pots above Stairs. Many of the literary intellegentsia of the day, including Virginia Woolf, Max Beerbohm, and Sigfried Sassoon, helped publicise its value. Illustrated with many plates of illustrations, often showing the portraits of the personalities featured in the diary. There is also a fold out map of Norfolk in volumeIV. With half titles. Collated: completeCondition: Rebound in mottled quarter calf with marbled boards. Externally excellent, with almost no discernable wear. The text blocks are untrimmed but still reasonably clean. Internally, all volumes clean and bright throughout, and firmly bound. Overall: FINE.

A Summer on the Test. With Twelve Dry-Points by Norm Wilkinson.

London. Philip Allan & Co. 1924. - folio, 32x 24cm, xiii,[1],192,[1]p., limited to 325 copies, this being #13 of 25 large paper copies, each etched plate is signed by the artist, signed of the colophon by the author, on laid paper, uncut, in the original half vellum and fine grain green linen boards, gilt spine titles, gilt ruled borders on the boards, a fine copy, rare The best edition of a classic description of fishing on the Test, with each of the etched plates signed in pencil by Norman Wilkinson. "No one has better summarized the return to reason' effected single-handed by G.E.M. Skues than John Walker Hill in his 1924 volume A Summer of the Test". Gingrich. Fishing in Print. p224/225. ``For many years Hills was an able Member of Parliament, but he was also an angler with an historical bent. His History of Fly Fishing for Trout, a survey of the literature from Berners to Land, is still a valuable reference. A Summer on the Test is more limited and more factual than Green`s book, but its opening chapters that deal with the history of the Test as a fishing river is of more than passing interest, for he cites evidence even from the records of Romsey Abbey where dwelt some gay and undisciplined nuns and several abbesses who kept strict watch on the Test, a good source of fish for fasting days of Lent. The later chapters do include some fine reminiscent passage that clearly mark Hills as a writer of more than ordinary merit and a man deeply in love with this quiet from of recreation. The Library copy is no. 7 from the limited edition of 300. It is a fine quarto, illustrated by twelve delicately sensitive dry-point etchings by Norman Wilkinson, and printed with surpassing skill. .`` Starkman & Read. p126. The Contemplative Man`s Recreation. Included in their list of the forty book that are the ``Landmarks in the Evolution of the Literature of Angling: 1496-1969``.         The Felix Annual - A Complete Set Of 6 Annuals

1924 to 1929, each volume with 95pp & 4 colour plates, glazed boards, cloth spines. The contents are in generally good condition, with finger and other minor marks here and there. There is a small piece of loss from the bottom of one of the pages of the 1925 Annual. A former owner has stamped his name and the number/date of each annual at the front (not entirely accurately!). All the plates are present. The boards are rubbed at the edges and corners, some volumes more than others. The upper board of the 1925 Annual is dulled and there are two scuffs towards the bottom. Apart from the 1925 Annual, overall they are in very good condition - a full set such as this is exceptional! Felix was a cartoon character created during the silent film era - as well as appearing in animated shorts he had his own comic strip which started in 1923. He was immensely popular but the arrival of sound cartoons, in particular the Mickey Mouse shorts from Disney, was the beginning of the end for Felix and, although some Felix cartoons with sound were made, by the early 1930s it was all over. The 1929 Annual was the last to be published.

BEN HECHT'S CHICAGO LITERARY TIMES MODERN SARDONIC JOURNAL

Chicago, 1924. Volume Two, Numbers 1 through 7 (II:2 is incorrectly denoted II:3, and is followed by the proper II:3). Seven issues. Illustrations. First five folio tabloid, numbers 6 & 7 large quarto tabloid. Printed self wrappers. Folio issues with horizontal fold, as issued. II:1 has split cleanly and completely along the spine fold and the first two leaves are substantially split along the horizontal fold, otherwise the remaining numbers in the lot are in very good to near fine condition, and are highly unusual thus. Edited by Ben Hecht and associate editor Maxwell Bodenheim, with both editors being the primary contributors of the text. Published semi-monthly beginning 1 March 1923, and concluding with the last number present here, CHICAGO LITERARY TIMES (as the issues in the first volume were titled) was in many ways Hecht's response to his dismissal by the CHICAGO DAILY NEWS and the rise of Chicago's prudishness in the face of the advance of modern letters. Hoffman, et al, are worth quoting at length: "...famous for its broad ironies and its parodies of the literary life of Chicago and New York. It is primarily a literary 'stunt,' immensely amusing, and has to be accepted as such. It is arranged in newspaper format, its shrieking headlines announcing 'events' improbable and ludicrous. Ben Hecht's 1001 AFTERNOONS IN CHICAGO appears in each issue, as does Bodenheim's 'authorized' but incredible autobiography. Ring Lardner and Samuel Putnam also contribute. The magazine is a thoroughly enjoyable bit of 'history' of Chicago's Bohemianism and how it grew." HOFFMAN, et al, p.268.

As the owner of the Pelere Arabian Stud, Stevens was both a highly respected breeder of Arabian horses and a gifted artist. Born in Penryn in 1903, she received her early tutelage from her mother; this was followed by spells at the Slade and Lucy Kemp-Welch's school at Bushey in Hertfordshire.

Autograph letter signed ("TE Shaw"). Clouds Hill, Moreton, Dorset, 15. X. 1924.

1924. 8vo. 2 pp. With autogr. envelope. Includes TDS by G. E. B. Bromley-Martin, of the Bank of Liverpool and Martin, London (dated 22. Dec. 1924). To Whitney H. Shepardson of New York, who had inquired as to how he might obtain a copy of the "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" when the book was finally published: "The Prophet has sent me on your letter, with instructions to deal with it: - and I'm puzzled. Really you know you are foolish to want a copy. It's a thirty guinea book, of which so many copies are being sold as will meet the printing bills (about 120 copies perhaps) with some off-prints of the unadorned text for the twenty or thirty fellows who shared the campaign with me. I can't give them 30-guinea presents: they can't buy 30-guinea books. So I want the subscribers to pay for my generosity in giving them free copies. The prime cost lies in the pictures (about 60, many in colour, at 10/- a print!) and the pictures are only an unjustifiable whim of mine. They have been done by British artists whom I liked, + who would work for me. Such a luxury book is for the idle rich. Mrs. Lamont is getting one. Huntingdon [!] + Pierpont Morgan aren't...! ... Do you feel justified in chucking away so much on an amateur production? The writing is pretentious, dull, hysterical, egotistical, + preternaturally long. No human being has ever been to the end of it [the 335,000 word ms.]. They return it, thumbed to about half way, with pretty speeches. So long as I hold it secret, the sight of it is a boast, so long it will be praised. Seriously, it isn't any earthly good. It costs as I have said, may be a year yet in printing, + is horrible in parts. Eleanor (beg her pardon, but that's her only possible name. The proper ones only indicate her wayward choice of parents etc.) would be sick over it. The thing will not be reprinted entire in my life-time: you suggest 'for a long time.' ... but the prospect isn't pleasing. There will be an American Edition, to secure copyright. Doubleday, probably. He has made a reasonable estimate. It would be printed at my expense, two copies for the Library of Congress, or whatever the show is, + eight for sale: + the sale price will be prohibitive, so that they will never sell, + the edition will never be exhausted, + no one may pirate! I suggest 10,000 dollars, but F.N.D. hasn't yet considered what is above-high-water-mark in U.S.A. Tell me, please, if you are knowing! If despite all faults (my most honest dissuasion puts people on sometimes!) you want a copy: then you'll have to send fifteen guineas, half price - E. will know the size of the extinct coin - to: Manager / Bank of Liverpool + Martins / 68 Lombard St. / London, E.C.3, payable to TE Lawrence, + 'Seven Pillars account' . Balance when you get the book. Let me strongly urge you not to. I have 90 subscribers, so there is no urgency - on the point of helping lame dogs! [...]". - When the book finally appeared in 1926, the cost of each copy to Lawrence was triple the selling price, and it was not until the fourth reprint of the 1927 abridgement "Revolt in the Desert" that his debts were paid off. As the included receipt shows, Shepardson was undeterred and duly transferred the £15. 15/- to Liverpool & Martins' (the last copy of the 1926 "Pillars" at auction commanded £30,000 at Sotheby's in 2009). - The U.S. businessman Whitney Hart Shepardson (1890-1966), educated at Colgate, Balliol (as a Rhodes Scholar), and Harvard, had served as aide to the State Department at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, where he may have met Lawrence. Between 1925 and 1927 he served as director on J. D. Rockefeller's General Education Board. A leading O.S.S. operative in WWII, he was the first London head of Secret Intelligence and remained with the organization soon to become the C.I.A. until 1946.

And at the beginning of the best Swordfish time in the Pacific, to leave for the doubtful pursuit of giant Tuna off the Atlantic was something extremely hard to do."       1924Série de 10 lithographies en couleurs sur papier signées en bas, 1924, 56 x 45 cm.
