Albany, NY: Frederick S. Hills, 1924. [6],33pp. Stiff printed wrappers. Photographic portrait frontispiece. Illustration. Very faint tide- mark along lower edge, two items tipped to rear end-leaf have offset a bit (but see below), otherwise about fine. First edition of this posthumously published collection of verse by the poet/philosopher/mystic who exerted an important influence on William James and, eventually, others. Edited by his daughter, Mary Eleanor Blood (Morris), with a Foreword by John Edmund Willoughby. Blood (1813-1919) is today most often recalled as the author of THE ANAESTHETIC REVELATION AND THE GIST OF PHILOSOPHY (1874), an account of his experiences with nitrous oxide as an agent of consciousness expansion. James reviewed Blood's pamphlet for THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY, and included his experiences - as well as his own - as elements in THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE. Blood was the subject of James's last published essay, "A Pluralistic Mystic," and their association is often marked as the debut of serious psychedelic research among Caucasian Americans. This collection of Blood's poems is oddly uncommon: Worldcat/OCLC locates only three copies, at Yale, Harvard and Brown. This is a highly interesting copy, as it is accompanied by two autograph letters from Blood, and on the recto and verso of the terminal blank are mounted: a) a long narrow (41 x 10.2 cm) galley proof printing of a poem by Blood, entitled in type "Reverie," but then amended in manuscript to "One or Liberty A Reverie," and b) a manuscript poem, "Thyreus," ca. 98 lines, written out in pencil on a long narrow strip of paper (extended by another attached strip), ca. 88 x 11.5 cm., signed at the end by Blood. The attendant autograph letters, to Minneapolis academic Dr. C. F. McClumpha, are each a full, closely written quarto page (one with a postscript on the verso), are both in pencil and are signed "Benj. Paul Blood." The first letter, Amsterdam NY, 11 March 1905, reads, in part: "I know you will be pleased to read my latest 'Reverie' - enclosed. I have it before the Messrs [?] Scribner, but have received a note from them to the effect that the editor ... has just gone to Europe, and it will be several weeks before he can pass upon it. In the meantime I hope you will tell me how it impresses you (if it shall be so fortunate as to have an impression,) - and as the publishers seem to rely so much upon the opinions of others, I think they would think much of the democratic judgment of your students. It would be a fine test to read it to them ... Herein is the incipiency of an American tribunal that may make and break literary reputations. It only now occurs to me but I shall make William James get me (in some part) the Harvard estimate of this verse ...." He closes with discussions of local events -- the recipient was evidently from Amsterdam or environs, as references are made to potential visits "to see to your property." The second letter, dated "4.3.'05" responds largely to McClumpha's reading of the poem: "Of course 'the barbecue' is affected; and the rhyme of 'thee' and 'free' is a bid for popular applause ... I fear that in mailing 5 [?] copies of that proof at once I sent you the wrong one - capitalized only 'Reverie.' The enclosed is what I meant for you - having a quotation from Lear after he had thrown over his supremacy to his ungrateful heirs." Blood concludes his discussion of his poem with a lengthy comparison of post-Kantian views of infinite space with those of the Greeks: "The infinite now is subjective liberty in the field of chance. The capital GOD, common to all religions, has like Lear given up supremacy. There may be many safe, independent, absolute gods, but none exclusive ...." The final form of the poem, under the title "Reveries of One," is printed in the text. The postscript on the verso of the second letter notes: "I have a note from Mrs. William James. He has gone to Greece, leaving orders that no letters follow him - he must be in a bad way - but she would surely send him my letter, and I would hear from him in a few weeks." OCLC: 20714061.

A Summer on the Test With Twelve Dry-Points by Norm Wilkinson

London. Philip Allan & Co. 1924.. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s) Book folio, 32x 24cm, xiii,[1],192,[1]p., limited to 325 copies, this being #13 of 25 large paper copies, each etched plate is signed by the artist, signed of the colophon by the author, on laid paper, uncut, in the original half vellum and fine grain green linen boards, gilt spine titles, gilt ruled borders on the boards, a fine copy, rare The best edition of a classic description of fishing on the Test, with each of the etched plates signed in pencil by Norman Wilkinson. "No one has better summarized the return to reason' effected single-handed by G.E.M. Skues than John Walker Hill in his 1924 volume A Summer of the Test". Gingrich. Fishing in Print. p224/225. ``For many years Hills was an able Member of Parliament, but he was also an angler with an historical bent. His History of Fly Fishing for Trout, a survey of the literature from Berners to Land, is still a valuable reference. A Summer on the Test is more limited and more factual than Green`s book, but its opening chapters that deal with the history of the Test as a fishing river is of more than passing interest, for he cites evidence even from the records of Romsey Abbey where dwelt some gay and undisciplined nuns and several abbesses who kept strict watch on the Test, a good source of fish for fasting days of Lent. The later chapters do include some fine reminiscent passage that clearly mark Hills as a writer of more than ordinary merit and a man deeply in love with this quiet from of recreation. The Library copy is no. 7 from the limited edition of 300. It is a fine quarto, illustrated by twelve delicately sensitive dry-point etchings by Norman Wilkinson, and printed with surpassing skill. .`` Starkman & Read. p126. The Contemplative Man`s Recreation. Included in their list of the forty book that are the ``Landmarks in the Evolution of the Literature of Angling: 1496-1969``. .

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.

        Fairy Tales.

London: Hodder and Stoughton,, [1924]. Quarto. Original green cloth in imitation of moiré silk, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, decorative endpapers. With the dust jacket. Housed in a contemporary custom-made slipcase. Colour frontispiece and 11 mounted colour plates (with captioned tissue guards), full-page illustrations, decorations and initial letters throughout from line drawings by Kay Nielsen. Jacket spine toned, some soiling, nicks, chips and tears (a few old tape repairs on verso), extremities of spine lightly sunned. An excellent copy. First trade edition, first impression, of one of the most beautiful editions of Andersen's fairy tales, work for which Nielsen had begun in 1912. "Though Dulac only indirectly used Art Nouveau, Kay Nielsen, the Danish artist, combined the bizarre side of the movement and its exquisite motifs, as used by Beardsley, with oriental influences in pattern and decoration. Like Dulac, Nielsen also designed stage sets and costumes, and this theatrical interest showed itself in his book illustration in exotic, stage-like settings and the use of symbolism. Nielsen also chose the fairy tale as the vehicle for his elaborate talents" (Walley & Chester, A History of Children's Book Illustration, 1988, p.156).

        The American Mercury (Volumes 1-30)

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1924-1930. Thirty volumes complete in original wrappers, issues 1-120. The successor to the Smart Set for Mencken and George Jean Nathan, Knopf gave them editorial control of a magazine that published some of the great authors of the twentieth century: Eugene O'Neill, Sherwood Anderson, Carl Sandburg, Theodore Dreiser, James M. McCain, Sinclair Lewis, William Faulkner, Vachal Lindsay, Edgar Lee Masters, Countee Cullen, James Weldon Johnson, Margaret Mead, Lewis Mumford, Louis Untermeyer and many others. Each issue also included Mencken's biting editorials. As Mencken stated, "The editors are committed to nothing save this: to keep to common sense as fast as they can, to belabor sham as agreeably as possible, to give a civilized entertainment." Includes the famous "Hatrack" issue, April1926, for which Mencken was arrested in Boston, and the US Post Office refused to deliver. Truly the Mencken era of The American Mercury, a complete run in wrappers, with little wear, one loose cover, and in very good condition.

Beach". Together with an additional copy of the score, each with [1] & 7 pages plus 2 blank leaves. The covers are splitting along a large portion of the spines. Each of these parts consist of 2 pages of her score reproduced from her holograph manuscript. The pages of the violin part have separated and those of the cello part are torn along the fold. The pages are darkened along the edges and there are several tears to the edges. A unique item. A child prodigy, Amy Marcy Cheney Beach (1867-1944) was an American composer and pianist and the first successful American female composer of large-scale classical music. Born in New Hampshire, she was able to sing over 40 tunes by the age of one and could improvise countermelody by 2 years of age. Teaching herself to read, she was composing waltzes by the age of 4 and was performing public piano recitals, playing Handel, Beethoven, Chopin and her own compositions, by the age of seven. Moving to Boston in 1875, she studied piano with Ernst Perabo and Carl Baermann and later studied composition for a year with Junius W. Hill. Otherwise self-taught, she learned by studying great classical pieces. She made her professional piano debut in Boston in 1883 and soon after appeared as a soloist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After her marriage to Dr. Henry Harris Aubrey Beach in 1885, she agreed to limit her performances to one a year and devoted herself to composition. Her first real success came 1892 with the performance of her "Mass in E-flat major" by the Handel and Haydn Society which established her an one of America's foremost composers. She composed "Jubilate" for the dedication of the Woman's Building at the Columbian Exposition. After her husband's death, she toured Europe as a pianist to establish her reputation as a pianist and composer. Returning to American she spent time at the MacDowell Colony in Perterborough, NH and later became the composer-in-residence at New York City's St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. She died of a heart attack in 1944 and was inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame in 1999. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Any copies of Ulysses inscribed by Joyce are extremely rare."Universally hailed as the most influential work of modern times" (Grolier Joyce 69). After working for seven years on Ulysses, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Joyce had become a well-known literary figure. Ulysses was explosive in its impact on the literary world of 1922". Then began the great game of smuggling the edition into countries where it was forbidden, especially England and the United States.
