Le livre des idoles. (Kitab el Asnam.) Texte arabe. 2me edition. Cairo, Imprimerie Bibliothèque Egyptienne, 1924.

1924. Large 4to. (4), IV, 40, 111, (1) pp. With 2 facsimile plates. Original staple-bound printed wrappers (professionally restored). In slipcase. Second edition. "Texte arabe publié pour la première fois d'après le manuscrit unique de la biblithèque Zèki Pacha accompagné d'une préface en Francais et enrichi de notes critiques par Ahmed Zeki Pacha." - The "Book of Idols" (Arabic: Kitab al-Asnam), written by the Arab scholar Hisham Ibn Al-Kalbi (737-819), describes godheads and rites of ancient Arab religion. The text is critical of pre-Islamic religion and decries the state of religious corruption which the Arabs had supposedly descended to since the founding of the Kaaba. The book was instrumental in identifying "shirk" (the sin of polytheism) with the idolatry of the pre-Islamic Arabs. Ahmad Zaki Pasha, the Egyptian philologist, discovered the text; he bought the sole extant manuscript at auction in Damascus. The manuscript, one of many in his extensive collection, was donated to the state after his death in 1934. - Edge defects to French title page, otherwise insignificant edge wear; a good, untrimmed copy. From the library of the Swedish theologian (Karl Vilhelm) Helmer Ringgren (1917-2012), Professor of Old Testament exegesis at Turku and Uppsala, with his pencilled margin notes and ownership to title page. Ringgren's works include "Islam, Aslama and Muslim" (1949) and "Studies in Arabian Fatalism" (1955). GAL S I, p. 212. OCLC 7012435.

        Anatolica

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1924 - First edition. 8vo. xii, 210, (4) pp. Publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettered to the spine and with a circular gilt vignette to the upper board, inscribed to "G.F. Clayton from the Author" on the front pastedown with an author's compliments slip loosely inserted. Colour frontispiece, 40 black and white photographic plates and a folding map to the rear. Small tear to the upper joint, else very good. Sir Gilbert Falkingham Clayton (1875-1929) was a career soldier and spent much time serving in north Africa in the early years of the 20th century. It was this experience which led to him being appointed head of the Arab Bureau in Cairo at the outbreak of the First World War and becoming a strong advocate for British support for the Arabs in the fight to unseat the Ottoman Empire from its control of the region. T.E. Lawrence was notably one of his subordinates at this time and he wrote of Clayton in the "Seven Pillars of Wisdom": "[He] made the perfect leader for such a band of wild men as we were. He was calm, detached, clear-sighted, of unconscious courage in assuming responsibility". After the war Clayton held several senior administrative roles in the British colonial service in the Middle East, conducting high level negotiations with the competing local rulers and brokering a number of treaties. In a region fraught with disagreements and tension in the vacuum left by the collapse of the Ottoman Empire Clayton "succeeded through tact, loyalty, keen observation, and deft management of information and personalities". (ODNB) Sir Harry Charles Luke's career as a British colonial administrator saw him undertake posts all across the Levant, Middle East and Caucasus, principally in Turkey and Palestine. It was said that he "had a penchant for taking jobs just when they were becoming awkward" (ODNB), unsurprising given the region and the period that lived in.

The "Union of Socialists-Revolutionaries Maximalists was a political party in the Russian Empire, a radical wing expelled from the Socialist-Revolutionary Party in 1906. The Union united agrarian terrorists, the 'Moscow Opposition' and other radical dissidents from the PSR in an independent party. The Maximalists officially split off from the PSR at its Second Congress in Imatra in 1906. Maximalists played a role in both the Revolution of 1905 and the Revolution of 1917. Many former SR Maximalists eventually joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolshevik)?.Maximalists were so called because they demanded the full implementation of the 'maximum programme' in the expected revolution: full socialisation of the land, factories and all other means of production. The orthodox Socialist-Revolutionaries wanted to start with land reform but defer socialisation of other means of production. The Maximalists also rejected the PSR's version of a 'two-stage' revolution, a theory associated with V.M. Chernov. According to Chernov, the coming revolution in Russia would not be purely 'bourgeois-democratic' as the Social-Democrats claimed, but would include social and economic as well as political reforms. It would be a 'popular-democratic' revolution, and would transition into a full-blown 'labour-socialist' revolution later on. The Maximalists rejected this as Social-Democratic 'attentism' and argued that the coming Russian revolution would not be able to stop half-way; it was the two-stage theory, not Maximalism, that was unrealistic if it thought the toiling masses, once liberated, would content themselves with a bourgeois republic and gradual reforms."         BEAU GESTE

London: John Murray. [1924]. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Primary binding of red cloth with gilt titles to the spine and blind stamped titles to the upper board. A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. The cloth is a little darkened and the gilt to the spine dulled. The contents are entirely complete, without loose or torn pages and without inscriptions or stamps. There is a little spotting to the endpapers and half title otherwise clean and bright throughout. An excellent example. Whilst the signed ?edition de luxe?, published in 1927 is very common in commerce the true first edition of this adventure novel is of considerable rarity. The book exists in two bindings, the primary binding of red cloth (as deposited with the British Library and Bodleian library) was produced for sale in the UK, copies bound in blue cloth were produced for the American market. Both issues are rare. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

        Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1924. - Edition Deluxe1/500 Copies Signed by Kay NielsenNielsen, Kay, illustrator. Andersen, Hans Christian. Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen. Illustrated by Kay Nielsen. London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1924]. Limited to 500 copies numbered and signed by the artist, this being copy no. 242. Large quarto (12 3/16 x 9 7/8 inches; 310 x 250 mm.). [x], 11-197, [3, blank] pp. Text with decorative borders and initials. Twelve mounted color plates with captioned tissue guards and numerous black and white text illustrations including seventeen full-page.Publisher's vellum, front cover and spine pictorially stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. On the lower edge of the front cover there is a small 1/4 inch abrasion to the vellum, otherwise this is a fine copy complete with the publisher's blue cloth dust jacket, spine pictorially stamped in gilt, and the original plain cream paper dust jacket (slightly worn at extremities).Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen’s designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen’s objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story’s emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales).
