The Recoil of Electrons from Scattered X-Rays", in Physical Review 23, 4, 1924, pp. 439-449

FIRST EDITION OF THE 1924 PAPER IN WHICH COMPTON & HUBBARD FIRST CONFIRM & OBSERVE THE PARTICLE NATURE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION (OR THE COMPTON EFFECT) USING WILSON'S NEW CLOUD CHAMBER METHOD. In a 1923 paper, Arthur Compton explained the Compton effect -- the increase in wavelength of X-rays scattered by collisions with electrons. The Compton effect, "the quantum theory of scattering suggested by Compton… assumes that each directed X-ray quantum is scattered by a single electron" (Compton and Hubbard, 1924, 449). Compton ends his 1923 paper by saying that 'the electrons which recoil in the process of the scattering of ordinary X-rays have not been observed'. In this 1924 paper, Compton and John Charles Hubbard, "in order to decide between Darwin's theory and the light-quantum theory… proposed to analyze the maximum energy of the recoil electrons and the relative number of observed recoil electrons to photoelectrons. They arrived at the following result: 'Both from the standpoint of the experimental evidence and from internal consistency of the theory we therefore seem forced to the conclusion that each quantum of scattered X-rays is emitted in a definite direction' (Rechenberg, Historical Development of Quantum Theory, 609; Compton and Hubbard, 1924, 449). "Compton and Hubbard's conclusion in favor of the light-quantum theory was based on counting the number of recoil electrons producing a track of given length in the cloud chamber" (Rechenberg, 609). Compton won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1927 for his discovery of the Compton effect. ALSO INCLUDED: Millikan and Bowen, "Extreme Ultra-violet Spectra", pp. 1-35. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, 8vo. Complete volume. [vii], 805, [5]. Ex-libris bearing the usual markings on the front flyleaf and pastedown; no other markings save for a tiny gilt stamp at the foot of the spine (see image). Tightly and very solidly bound in blue buckram; gilt-lettered at the spine. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition inside and out.

        SAINTED DEVIL, A (1924)

Paramount 1924 - Vintage original 22 x 14" (56 x 36 cm.) window card poster, USA. Rudolph Valentino, Nita Naldi, dir: Joseph Henabery; Paramount. One of the great poster images of the iconic Rudy in what is, sadly, a mostly lost film (of which less than one reel has survived). This splendid stone lithograph represents him in gaucho outfit (the film was set in Argentina, the locale of his breakaway success, Four Horseman of the Apocalypse), with cigarette dangling from his fingers and a snarl on his face. Poster is entirely unrestored. There is a chip in top right corner, and some abrasion right next to that chip, some scattered pinholes, and a hint of slight age darkening to the blank margins. Colors are perfect and as rich as on the day when this wonderful poster was first printed, VERY GOOD+.

Zapiski poeta. Povest? [Aufzeichnungen eines Dichters. Erzählung].

Original-Ausgabe.

Moore responds in his manuscript note on the halftitle possibly to the request of Frieda Lawrence, wife of D.H.Lawrence, who requested a copy of Moore's book "The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe". Moore sent her instead this edition. George Moore (1852 - 1933) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, poet, art critic, memoirist and dramatist. Moore came from a Roman Catholic landed family who lived at Moore Hall in Carra, County Mayo. He originally wanted to be a painter, and studied art in Paris during the 1870s. There, he befriended many of the leading French artists and writers of the day. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of Émile Zola. His writings influenced James Joyce, according to the literary critic and biographer Richard Ellmann, and, although Moore's work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist. George Moore's family had lived in Moore Hall, near Lough Carra, County Mayo for almost a century. The house was built by his paternal great-grandfather-also called George Moore-who had made his fortune as a wine merchant in Alicante. The novelist's grandfather was a friend of Maria Edgeworth, and author of An Historical Memoir of the French Revolution. Ebury Street in Belgravia was where Moore lived when he was in London. This copy of "Conversations in Ebury Street" contains a full-page, signed message written inside the book by George Moore. Moore responds in his manuscript note to the request of a Mrs. Lawrence (possibly Frieda Lawrence, wife of D.H.Lawrence), who requested a copy of Moore's book The Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe. Moore sent her instead this edition.

The novelist's grandfather was a friend of Maria Edgeworth, and author of An Historical Memoir of the French Revolution.nnEbury Street in Belgravia was where Moore lived when he was in London.

Lettera autografa firmata indirizzata a ''Gentilissimo Marchese'' Datata 23 febbraio 1924.

1924. 3 pagine in-8 su carta intestata ''Hotel Ritz Paris'', chiaramente vergata e firmate''Guglielmo Marconi''.

- Kat. Sprengel Museum 218. - Bowlt/Hernad 73. - Kat. MoMa 750. - Andel, Avantgarde Pagedesign 252.
