        Die Verstümmelten. Roman.

Rowohlt, Berlin 1923 - 269 S., 1 Blatt Anzeigen. Orig.-Halbleinenband. Alice Im Spiegelland [Through the Looking-Glass, and what Alice found there].

8vo. Original mid-blue cloth lettered gilt to spine with a decorative title in gilt to upper board, mid-blue endpapers, preserved in pictorial dustwrapper; [vi], 7-121 + [ii]; with 12 fine, striking, and saturated, colour-lithographed plates in Expressionist style together with a decorative title in black and white; a very attractive copy indeed with mild dulling to spine gilt, internally fresh throughout with almost unavoidable even toning to text stock and a couple of insignificant edge nicks, protected by the remarkably elusive pictorial dustwrapper featuring an additional coloured plate not reproduced internally, the wrapper with light overall dusting, small loss to head of spine (maximum width 27mm), one or two short and closed edge tears, nicking to a couple of corners, and light lateral creasing to top edge. First edition illustrated thus. A very scarce edition indeed, not included in Lovett (the seminal bibliography of Alice which lists over 2000 titles) although a copy of (apparently) the same year, with only 5 coloured plates, and without a dustwrapper, is listed (689). Only two other copies of this book were traced in commerce at the time of cataloguing and neither possess the dustwrapper.

        Inscribed and signed notecard.

Paris: , Spring 1923. Single notecard, inscribed. Some light marks, very good condition. Enigmatic notecard inscribed by Joyce, "James Joyce Paris Easter 1923". Easter fell on 30th March in 1923, when Joyce had just recommenced writing, after a year's exhausted abeyance following the publicaton of Ulysses in Paris in 1922. Joyce had not written a line of prose for a year, but on 10 March wrote to his patron Harriet Shaw Weaver: "Yesterday I wrote two pages—the first I have since the final Yes of Ulysses. Having found a pen, with some difficulty I copied them out in a large handwriting on a double sheet of foolscap so that I could read them. 'The wolf may lose his skin but not his vice' or 'the leopard cannot change his spots.'" This was the first foray into Joyce's next great work, the Work in Progress that would become Finnegan's Wake.

        Les Petites Filles

Chez Paul Rosenberg, Paris 1923 - A charmer by the French Cubist, one of the small number of important female members of the movement, although the artwork in this book has more kinship to Cassatt or Renoir than strict Cubism. No. 207 of 250 limitation. Very scarce, with no copies located on OCLC First Search. Squarish 48mo. 101 by 97 mm. Unpaginated, 19 color lithograph plates, one other b/w plate, captions with the names of the subjects on the facing pages, and numerous blanks between pages as if this were an actual sketchbook album. Indeed, an outstanding aspect of the book is how the artwork can be mistaken for the actual watercolors, as opposed to prints of watercolors. The publisher deepens the illusion with captions, and the title on the title pastedown, written what appears to be a long-hand cursive done in actual pen-and-ink, although these too are printed. 17 of the illustrations are of women, often girls, and there is a dreamy quality to all of them. The three other illustrations are of flowers. Sunning of spine. A few minor paper chips of the decorative paper pastedown, both on the binding proper, and a bit more so on the slipcase, which features the same undulating striped pattern. Interior is clean and bright. Hardcover. Paper pastedown. Slipcase, with paper pastedown. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
