        Ne poputchitsa. (Not a companion).

Gosudarstvennoe izd-vo., Moscow. 1923 - Lavinsky was a Soviet artist and designer, a member of LEF and artist for the LEF magazine. He was close to Mayakovsky and the group of artists of the Institute of Art Culture (INHUK), including Rodchenko, the Stenberg brothers, Stepanova et al. Lavinsky was one of the first designers of photomontage posters (movies, advertising), and this cover is a fine example of the constructivist image combined with photomontage. The bold lettering, set at a diagonal angle, echoes the feeling of movement from the cut-out photograph of a speeding train. (22.4 x 15.3 cm). pp. 36. Original wrappers with a constructivist cover designed by Anton Lavinsky, from a preliminary design by Mayakovsky. Near fine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Story of the Cape to Cairo Railway and River Route, from 1887 to 1922.

The Pioneer Publishing Company Ltd. and "The African World", [1923]. 4to. 4 vols. comprising 3 text volumes and one map and index volume; original morocco-backed boards; numerous mounted photographic portraits, illustrations from photographs, coloured plates, maps including some folding and 12 in pocket of the map volume, facsimile letters and documents, etc.; lightly rubbed, two or three mounting sheets with marginal flaws, very few pages with minor marginal spotting, without the plate of the gorilla at p. 308 in vol. III (as always), else a very attractive set, without the continuation, which appeard in one further volume in 1926, but with the lavishly produced prospectus for the publication, this with lightly frayed wrappers. First edition. As Smuts writes in his foreword, this work is a 'monumental record of African Pioneering'. Although its primary theme relates to the development of the Cape to Cairo railway, it encompasses many aspects of British exploration and pioneering in Africa. Indeed the work amounts to a paean to the British colonial period. The list of contributors reads like a Who's Who: John Buchan, Winston Churchill, Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, Ewart Grogan, Harry Johnston, Frederick Lugard, Flinders Petrie, Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Selous, Smuts, Reginald Wingate, Francis Younghusband, and numerous others. Chapters cover the development of the gold- and diamond-fields, native peoples and big game along the route, and much else. A superb production and an excellent record of British interests in Africa, together with the rarely seen prospectus for this publication.

        Typhoon.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1923. First edition, later printing of this classic sea yarn by Conrad. Octavo, original blue cloth, gilt stamped to the front panel, gilt titles to the spine, frontispiece. Boldly inscribed by Joseph Conrad on the front free endpaper. In near fine condition with some light offsetting to the endpapers. Typhoon is most likely based upon Conrad's actual experience of seaman's life, and probably on a real incident aboard of the steamer John P. Best. The Typhoon describes how Captain MacWhirr sails the s/s Nan-Shan, a British-built steamer running under the Siamese flag, into a typhoon a mature tropical cyclone of the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. Other characters include the young Jukes most probably an alter ego of Conrad from the time he had sailed under captain John McWhirr and Solomon Rout, the chief engineer. The novella classically evokes the seafaring life at the turn of the century. While Macwhirr, who, according to Conrad, never walked on this Earth is emotionally estranged from his family and crew, and though he refuses to consider an alternate course to skirt the typhoon, his indomitable will in the face of a superior natural force elicits grudging admiration.

Cruise of the Mauretania to the Mediterranean 1923 (Photo Album)[cover title]

Stamford, CT: Publishers Photo Service, Inc., 1923. Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Very Good. [114] pages. 13-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches. Photo album of the first luxury cruise of the RMS Mauretania (Cunard Line), following its sixteen years of service as a transatlantic ocean liner, and World War One hospital ship. This first cruise was commissioned by the American Express Travel Company, and aimed exclusively at the wealthy, with prohibitively costly ticket prices. Advertisements announced Mauretania would be diverted from her regular ports 'to make an epoch in cruising history.' Ads ran widely in magazines including Travel, National Geographic, Country Life, The Dial, Current Opinion, Literary Digest, and elsewhere. The cruise left the Port of New York on February 10, 1923 and returned the following April. At the time, Mauretania was the Blue Riband record holder for the fastest ship on the Atlantic, an honor it held for 20 years. Newspapers at the time reported the cruise was re-christened mid-voyage as 'The Hundred Million Dollar Ship” due to its moneyed patrons. The bespoke album contains 113 black-and-white photographs, 9-1/2 by 7-1/2 inches each, tipped-in recto only, one per page, with caption labels in varying fonts glued beneath. Includes two full images of the Mauretania herself, one in Corsica and one from the Grand Corniche Drive in the French Riviera, plus one of the bow taken aboard at the landing at Ponta Delgada in the Azores. The photos depict idyllic stops in Spain, Algiers, Monte Carlo, The French Riviera, Naples, Pompeii, Rome, Istanbul, Athens, Giza, Cairo and Portugal, and includes a smoking Mt. Vesuvius. Despite the opulence, the luxury tourists were shocked after landing in Turkey among desperate refugees. Three photos show refugees in a camp on the Bosphorus Strait, one with a child who died while the photo was taken, and other children who would die of starvation or diphtheria within hours or days. Most captions do not personally identify the people depicted, but one exception is a photograph of Judge Elbert H. Gary (who paid $25,000 for his suite on the ship) and his wife in Madeira. Gary was the founder of U. S. Steel, and for whom the city of Gary, Indiana was named. After the cruise Gary was quoted in American papers, 'I was shocked by the deplorable conditions at Constantinople, at Athens and in the Near East, where many thousands of starving refugees are huddled in rags and filth in wretched, insanitary hovels.' Fellow passenger H. A. Tallmadge, owner of the Toledo Blade newspaper, 'corroborated the steel maker's description of the horrible condition of the Christian refugees in the Near East, saying that Greece is unable to handle the situation and must have more medical aid or thousands will perish.' The London Illustrated Police News on April 12, 1923 noted the 'Ship Full of American Millionaires' was not only a costly affair but also 'one of the wettest voyages made by Americans since prohibition. Considerably more than £10,000 pounds worth of liquor was consumed.' Black leather covers over black pages bound with two heavy rivets. Title and original owner's name stamped with gilt on cover. Edges worn and outside hinges starting to crack. Missing 6 pages that were cut or torn out. Most photos fine, though a few are lightly scuffed. Former owner's printed address sticker on front blank reinforced with scotch tape. Scarce.

        The Berkshire Kennet.

London: Privately Printed for Holbrook Jackson at the Curwen Press,, 1923. Small duodecimo-sized pamphlet. Original patterned wrappers, title label to front. Fine. First edition, first impression, number 28 of 50 copies, printed on hand-made paper, this copy additionally inscribed on the limitation page, "Donald Friede from Richard Aldington". Donald S. Friede (1901-1965) was a significant American publisher of literary Modernists. The son of a Russian immigrant who had represented Ford in Tsarist Russia, Friede was expelled from three universities (Harvard, Yale, and Princeton) before finding his first footing in the book world working as a stock clerk for Alfred A. Knopf. He had only just joined Boni & Liveright in 1923, the year of this book's publication. He soon rose to become its Vice-President in 1925, and in 1928 co-founded Covici-Friede, Inc, publishing the likes of John Steinbeck, Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot and E.E. Cummings. He later worked as a literary agent, and senior editor at Prentice-Hall and Doubleday, working with Ernest Hemingway and Theodore Dreiser. The Library of Congress holds his papers. This is an excellent association for one of the British Modernist's rarest publications, of which we can trace only one inscribed copy ever having appeared auction, in 1992. Aldington's long poem (which had appeared in To-Day, September 1923, and also appeared in the same year in the collection The Exile and Other Poems) communicates the spiritual salve of walks along the River Kennet in Berkshire, where he was recovering in Malthouse Cottage from the shock of his trench experiences, taking his friend T. S. Eliot (then flushed with fame after the publication of The Waste Land in 1922) as an occasional companion on his countryside rambles. Aldington's biographer described the pastoral poem as "a one man rear-guard action against Modernism... symptomatic of the fact that Aldington was uncertain of his position in relation to the new poetic" (Richard Aldington: A Biography).

Powder River Invasion War on the Rustlers in 1892

Self Published 1923 - Small hardcover, no DJ. In good condition, moderate bumping to spine ends and corners, minor cover staining, front hinge is beginning to separate, pages are toning, text is clear and clean. This is a 1923 printing of the extremely rare 1894 book written by Asa Shinn Mercer. Even this 1923 edition is scarce. This is the story of the Johnson County, Wyoming, war pitting the settlers (rustlers) against the cattle barons of the day. A S Mercer was not originally on the side of the settlers, but he felt compelled to write the story (Banditti of the Plains, sub-titled The Crowning Infamy of the Ages) to tell of the tactics used by the cattle barons.
