Die Radierungen sind voller Witz und die erotische Variante immer sehr deutlich. Einband an Kanten und Kapitalen etwas berieben. Innen leicht stockfleckig und etwas fingerfleckig. Sehr rar.       Chapman & Hall -1924 1923 - Four issues, bound as one in publisher's quarter buckram over paper covered boards. A very good copy lightly worn to spine, corners and upper board. Illustrated throughout with woodcuts by various artists including Evelyn Waugh, Alistair, John Austen & Harry Clarke. "at Oxford Evelyn had a greater reputation as a graphic artist than a writer, and as such was much in demand, designing covers for magazines, OUDS programmes, book jackets for Chapman & Hall and for the caricatures with which he had been successful at Lancing, when he bartered satirical sketches for cream slices and halfpenny stamps. During one vacation he took lessons in wood-engraving. and sold a number of prints. to Clifford Bax for his short-lived publication, the Golden Hind." - Selina Hastings (Evelyn Waugh, A Biography) In this volume Waugh contributes four woodcut vignettes and a full page drawing, "The Tragical Death of Mr. Will.         The World Crisis: 1911-1914

London: Thornton Butterworth, Ltd., 1923. First edition. Hardcover. This is a jacketed copy of the British first edition, first printing of the first volume of the Churchill's monumental history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. This volume covers the first four years Churchill spent as First Lord of the Admiralty, as well as the beginning of the war. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear and dulling, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Truly bright and clean bindings are seldom seen without the original dust jackets, and the dust jackets are exceptionally scarce. Although there were eight printings (between 1923 and 1930) of the first edition of this first 1911-1914 volume, the first printing dust jacket is particularly elusive, distinguished by a blank rear panel. (Subsequent printings advertised other volumes in the series.) This first edition, first printing in a first printing dust jacket is the starting point for the difficult task of assembling a full, jacketed, first printing set. Condition is near fine in a dust jacket that approaches very good condition. The blue cloth binding is square, beautifully bright and clean, with vivid spine gilt. We note only slight wear to extremities, a small bump to the lower front corner, and wrinkled spine ends. The contents are clean with no previous ownership marks. Differential toning to the endpapers consistent with the dust jacket flaps confirms what the bright binding already testifies – that this copy has spent life jacketed. Second state of the first printing is confirmed by an errata slip tipped in at the table of contents. The spotting endemic to the edition is primarily confined to prelims and page edges. The dust jacket is substantially complete, with minor chipping to a maximum 1 cm depth at the spine ends and minor loss at the corners. A closed tear extends 7.5 cm up from the bottom of the rear hinge and 5 cm horizontally across the lower spine. This closed tear virtually disappears beneath the removable, archival quality clear cover. We note some toning and soiling to the jacket spine and some staining on the blank rear panel adjacent to the hinge. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose.         Tristan und Isolde. [Full score in autograph musical manuscript facsimile]

München: Drei Masken Verlag, 1923. Limited Edition, this number 151 of 530 copies. A Handlung (drama) in three acts by Richard Wagner to his own libretto, Tristan und Isolde was first performed in Munich at the Königliches Hof- und Nationaltheater on June 10, 1865. "That Tristan und Isolde turned out to be not just a masterpiece but a milestone in the history of music, that it took two years to write and another six to get onto the stage because of the formidable difficulties facing the musicians, is proof enough that there was more to its conception that a hankering for receipts and recognition... Tristan largely deserves its reputation as the seminal work in the emancipation of harmony from the Classical tonal system. It was to be another half a century before the twelve notes of the chromatic scale were to be treated as co-equals, but Tristan, perhaps more than any other piece of music, symbolized the end of one ear and looked forward to the birth of another." Millington: Wagner, pp. 228 and 243.. Folio. Half dark purple morocco with marbled boards, raised bands on spine in decorative spine in compartments gilt, titling gilt. 354 pp. autograph musical manuscript facsimile + 1f. (recto limitation statement, verso blank).
