Powder River Invasion War on the Rustlers in 1892

Self Published 1923 - Small hardcover, no DJ. In good condition, moderate bumping to spine ends and corners, minor cover staining, front hinge is beginning to separate, pages are toning, text is clear and clean. This is a 1923 printing of the extremely rare 1894 book written by Asa Shinn Mercer. Even this 1923 edition is scarce. This is the story of the Johnson County, Wyoming, war pitting the settlers (rustlers) against the cattle barons of the day. A S Mercer was not originally on the side of the settlers, but he felt compelled to write the story (Banditti of the Plains, sub-titled The Crowning Infamy of the Ages) to tell of the tactics used by the cattle barons. Most of the original edition was destroyed under mysterious circumstances. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

SCARCE FULL SET OF FIRST EDITIONS IN VERY FINE BINDINGS SIGNED BAYNTUN OF BATH. In Churchill's own words: "(in) the five volumes of the WORLD CRISIS and the AFTERMATH I have told the story of the War from the British standpoint, and particularly from those positions of authority which I held myself. The war at sea, the expedition to the Dardanelles, and the campaigns in France and Flanders filled the stage. It was only here and there that brief summaries of the struggles of Russia with Germany and Austria in the East could find a place. In (THE EASTERN FRONT) the proportions are reversed. The tale both of the events leading to the War and of its battles is told from the Eastern theatre, and only brief, indispensable references are made to British and French affairs. I have attempted to give a general account of the whole War upon the Eastern Front, and the distant cannonade in France breaks only fitfully upon the ear. The primary theme arises in Vienna and covers the agonies of Central Europe. The familiar events of the West are seen only in their reactions upon the Eastern Front" [preface to THE EASTERN FRONT).

An intimate knowledge of these necessities is the first condition for Social Reformers being ever able to produce something more than cheap speculations on the economic organization of the future or costly disturbances of the very delicate machinery of present economic life." - from Preface.         THE ROVER [inscribed by Conrad]

1923. Garden City NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1923. Original blue cloth, with dust jacket. First Trade Edition (preceded one day earlier by a 377-copy special edition), published before the English edition.~This volume is in fine condition, and the jacket is just about fine as well (very slightly tanned, as usual). Keating 179.~This copy's front free endpaper bears an almost-full-page signed presentation inscription, "Signed at the request of Walter Tittle for Miss Jean Campbell with best wishes by [signed] Joseph Conrad New Year's Day 1924". Sadly, this New Year's Day would be Conrad's last -- as he would die on August 3rd of the year just beginning. On 12 November 1922, Allan Wade (who was then trying to help Conrad get his dramatic version of THE SECRET AGENT onto the stage) had paid a visit to the Conrads' home, bringing with him the American portraitist Walter Tittle (1883-1966), whom Conrad admired; that day Tittle did an etching of Conrad, which would subsequently be selected as the frontispiece for Dent's Collected Edition of his works [1923].~Provenance: small "SJS" bookplate of Stanley J. Seeger -- see Sotheby's Seeger lot #363.

W lasach polskich. Avt. Przek?ad z ?ydo?kiego Savla Wagmana. [Tales of the Polish Forest.]

      E. Gitlin, Warszawa (Warsaw) 1923 - First edition. In publisher's illustrated blue cloth, printed in gold. 313, (7) p. Polish translation of Opatoshu's iconic novel "In poylishe velder" originally published in Yiddish in 1921 in New York and adapted to screen twice (1929, 1971). Joseph Opatoshu (1887-1954) was a Polish-born Jewish Yiddish writer, lived most of his life in the US, known as one of the most important Yiddish-American authors. Tales of the Polish Forest is a story of Jewish smugglers and horse thieves carrying out their trade on the Tzarist Russian-German border together with Poles, the novel is showing the Jewish rootedness in Poland. Opatoshu's story was adapted to screen first by Jonas Turkow 1929 as "In die poylishe velder" with Yiddish intertitles, and the 1971 adventure film, Romance of a Horsethief which is partly and loosely based on Opatoshu's novel. The cover and the title page (identical) were designed by W?adys?aw Ze'ev Weintraub the Expressionist graphic artist and painter, associated with Polish Yiddish avant-garde movements and magazines such as "Khalyastre" and "Albatros". Ownership stamp on title page and on p. 35. Cover rubbed, bumped at corners. The first episode title (p. [6]) restored, no effect on text. Stains occasionally throughout, pages yellowed due to aging.

Edition of 150 copies of which 50 in Roman Numerals. Copy in Roman numerals. This Portfolio includes 9 lithographs by Odilon Redon. Perfect Conditions. Charles Baudealire first published his masterpiece in 1857, poetry that foreshadowed the Symbolist and inspired entire generations for his wide range of reflections and controversies, and inspired thanks to its sensuality and melancholy. In 1889, the new edition of Les Fleurs du Mal was conceived, and it seems that Odilon Redon (Bordeaux, 1840 - Paris, 1916) himself, suggested to the editor Deman the idea of an album of the masterpiece, and sold him the set of 9 drawings. They consist of the illustrations, or better, "interpretations" (using Redon worlds) of the poems in Baudelaire's masterpiece. This series of drawings was so first exhibited at the Salon des XX in 1890, and then reproduced full size in the Evely edition. The present volume includes the republication of the lithographs, later republished in 1923 by Henri Floury.

        Photo Album]: The Female Figure

1923 - Quarto. 40pp. Stringbound textured paper wrappers. Moderate wear to the extremities with some waviness to the pages and some photos lifting at the corners but all still firmly secured, very good. This portfolio was sold to subscribers by Allen from his Arthur Allen Studios during the Teens and Twenties and contains more than 40 pages of original nude photographic prints pasted onto stiff pages. Each sheet has between two to four different images; many showing four separate poses of the same model. The final three pages include 22 additional nudes tipped in after publication, some photos and some from postcards, possibly issued blank for the buyer to customize. The first page also includes a tipped-in title page and a bound-in brochure announcing this particular series (along with a pencil note, "Received 19 Ap 1923") and predicting: "We are entering a period of nudity." Allen (1886-1962) was a pioneer in nude photography who was unusual in that his models displayed certain regions of the female form not documented by other photographers of the time. Allen claimed this was not for salacious reasons, but rather his earnest attempt to display the entirety of nude figure for artistic and "democratic" ideals. He explained in his biography, "To see womankind entirely nude would place all women on equality. And it would be only their true mental and physical charm that would lift them from the ordinary." Allen was arrested and indicted on several occasions during the 1920s for distributing obscene material but continued undaunted. He further pushed the boundaries with a portfolio of women from other races and a film of nude woman performing choreographed routines and military drills. Eventually he became a photographer for the Elysium Foundation, a nudist society, before fading into obscurity. An interesting and arresting collection of images from the early part of the 20th Century by an unsung pioneer in nude photography. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[THE ESSENCE OF SOVIET SATIRE] Krokodil

№11, 12, 14, 19, 28-33, 40, 41, 46 for 1923. #2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, 15-17 for 1924. #1 for 1925. #15/16 for 1932. All issues in a good condition, with tears of the wrappers (with minor losses of text #40, 41, 17), occasional foxing, soiling and stains; loss of the spine (#11/1923), pages with minor losses of margins (#12, 30), owner's marks (#14, 28, 29), pale bookshop stamp on the back cover (#9, 17). The collection of 24 early issues of Krokodil magazine. The magazine was founded in 1922, and early issues are the most rare today on the market. From 1922 to 1925 is the period of the maximum concentration of important names in the magazine: Mayakovsky, Ganf, Moor, Deni, Kukriniksy, Cheremnykh, Malyutin, Gruzenberg, Radlov and others. Long Russian tradition of illustrated satirical magazine started in 1860s with reforms and social changes, and the big boost to it was given by the Revolution of 1905. Since then Russian press experienced a boom in satirical magazines, journals, newspapers, pamphlets, etc. Krokodil took a lot from that period, and later in 1930s after massive political and ideological attack on the «bourgeois NEP satire» it surprisingly survived and remained the only all-Union satirical magazine with multimillion runs. Krokodil ate them all, and in these early issues the birth of the monster is reflected. After 1940s Krokodil was considered by everyone as an official, ceremonial organ of propaganda satire. The jokes were not funny and the drawings were typical of the style, issue after issue. In this early collection we can see that although Krokodil was political from the beginning, much more talent and experimentation could be found on its pages. Indeed Mikhail Cheremnykh invented soviet satirical drawing within this magazine, a lot of Dmitriy Moor's images were 'on the brink'. The sketches themselves were quite advanced graphically: photomontage was used as well as the abstract design, the echo of suprematism and cubism. At the same time artists like Kukryniksy and Boris Efremov have started to develop what is later will be known as Krokodil style: the mix of grotesque and simple poster-like imagery bulldozing political enemies of the state. Because all of this coexisting we can say that 1920s were the most interesting period for the magazine.

        Raquettes

Chez Porcabeuf. Printed by L'Estampe Nouvelle, 1923. First Limited Edition. Folder.. Very Good. Scarce, with no copies recorded on OCLC! Folio, 37.5 by 28.5 cm. With six color plates depicting women playing tennis, or holding tennis raquets. These are rendered with a light pastel palette in a post-Impressionist style. The plates are mounted within and onto very large folded sheets, and the top page has several paragraphs of light text that sets the tone for and explains the illustration. The suite of plates was done in a signed limited edition of 45, our set being numbered 2. The suite as an unit captures the fantasy and allure of the game, then a much more chi chi exclusive pursuit, and perhaps much more of an aesthetically-driven game in its peripheral elements than it is today in a ultra-commercial manifestations of it. The outer folder of card is torn into two at the spine fold. Within the plates and the folded sheets of card onto which they are mounted are in a fine state.

The Legend of Monte Della Sibilla or Le Paradis de la Reine Sibille.

Richmond: Leonard and Virgina Woolf at the Hogarth Press,, 1923. Quarto. Original white boards, titles and illustration to upper board in black. With the dust jacket. Front cover designed by Vanessa Bell; frontispiece, head- and tailpiece by Duncan Grant. A little toned to spine and around board edges, ends and corners lightly bumped, internally sound and fresh, an excellent copy in the jacket which is somewhat tanned to spine panel, lightly dust soiled, and has a few minor chips and tears to the extremities but in nonetheless remarkably well preserved. First edition, first impression, rare inscribed copy, with a manuscript poem laid in, and in the scarce jacket. This copy of Bell's Monte Della Sibilla (a humorous romantic romp through Renaissance Tuscany in the style of Byron's Don Juan, closing with the characteristic couplet "In my opinion, you did well / to live for love, though love is hell"), which was printed in a small edition of 400 copies, is inscribed and twice signed by Bell on the front free endpaper, "Clive Bell. August 24 1941. A la Sibilla de nos jours, Clive". The identity of the recipient prophetess is not immediately clear. However, laid in is an original manuscript finished draft of Bell's 19-line poem "To Lopokova Dancing", a highly romantic paean to Lydia Lopokova, which was written in 1918 and published in Poems (1921). The manuscript has three textual corrections, with the published text matching the final state here, making this the finished draft. It is signed "Clive Bell" and beneath gifted with the inscription "from Clive Bell. 46. Gordon Square. London. W.C.1." (It also bears an earlier initial "C.B." below the text and an earlier location "Garsington. Oxford" inked out, suggesting perhaps the original location of the poem's composition.) We can date his gifting of the manuscript by the address given in Bell's inscription, 46 Gordon Square, where Bell lived from 1922 to 1929. Its presence in this copy strongly suggests the recipient of this rare inscribed copy of Monte Della Sibilla to have been Lopokova herself. This, combined with the fact that Bell's laudatory inscription "To the Sibilla of our days" is in French (Bell and Lopkova often wrote to one another in French), further asserts the likelihood. The association is an excellent one, between two key Bloomsbury figures who had, before the ballerina married John Maynard Keynes in 1925, had something of a romantic frisson. Lopkova came to the attention of London in 1918 - having recently joined Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, she danced in Massine's The Good-Humoured Ladies (Le donne de buon umore) in 1918, and then in the following year seduced the audience in a raucuous Can-Can alongside Massine in the world premiere of The Magic Toyshop (La Boutique Fantasque). Bell, during his brief balletomane phase, was smitten (as is evident from the poem), and praised Lopokova in a New Republic (July 1919) article as "the finest danseuse that this generation has seen... not only a genuine artist but a brilliant executant", contrasting Lopkova's "true artist" to Tamara Karsavina's mere "actress", and comparing her "deliciously gay temperament" to Mozart and Fra Angelico. All this was calculated to flatter, and Bell, ever the womaniser, made a spirited attempt at seduction. Though he was unsuccessful, the ballerina and the critic remained friends and correspondents throughout their lives, and this later inscription of the book in 1941, when Lopokova was chiefly nursing Keynes in his ill health, is entirely plausible. If so, then it is pleasing to think that she treasured her copy of his poem and then inserted it in her copy of this book. Copies of this attractive Hogarth production are scarce in the dust jacket. Inscribed copies, however, are rare - we have never handled another and can trace none recorded at auction.

The Campaign in Mesopotamia 1914-1918. Compiled, at the Request of the Government of India, under the Directon of the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence.

      - London, HMSO, 1923-1927. Four volumes, 8vo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt; highly illustrated with plates after photographs and folding maps, many of which in rear pockets; varying light wear and fading to bindings, internally very good. All volumes in first edition, errata slip in volume one. This, the most comprehensive - if biased - account of the First World War in Iraq, or the Mesopotamian Campaign was researched and written by Brigadier James Frederick Moberly, who was born in 1867 in Madras and became a leading military historian. The four volumes, published in the series History of the Great War, cover and illustrate the Turkish province before the war, the Indian Army, the decision to invade, the capture of Basra, Turkish counter attacks, the British advance on Baghdad, reorganisation of the British forces after the siege and fall of Kut, and the eventual capture of Baghdad. The set concludes with British and Indian operations in Persia, Kurdistan and the Caspian Sea in campaigns against the Bolsheviks under General Dunsterville. A complete set of this exhaustive military history of Iraq from 1914 to 1918 is rarely seen. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
