Frauen. Deutsche Ausgabe des Buches "Femmes".

Ohne Ort, Verlag u. Bel exemplaire. Hayn-Got. IX, 603 (avex fausse date de 1922). Poesia Pentagrammata.

Napoli, G. Casella, 1923.. 8°. 44 + 1 S. OBrosch.. EA. In ital. Sprache. - Etw. bestossen, Seiten unaufgeschnitten.

The Ship that Sailed to Mars

ISBN or SBN Number: n/a. First edition, English issue of this maginficently illustrated work by Timlin.George G Harrap published this huge and magnificent volume in November 1923, finely bound in half vellum richly decorated in gilt. The book contains superb color plates by the artist, alternated throughout with 48 leaves adorned with his fine calligraphic and poetic text. These pieces of art were all mounted by hand on gray matte paper, reminiscent of Harrap's best pre-war editions de luxe. Timlin's fantasy is a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland. His watercolors equal the best work of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson (Dalby, 102). The book's strength [rests] on its exotic descriptions and beautiful illustrations (Clute & Grant, 949-50). A must for the serious bibliophile 48 pp text with 48 plates, In grey boards with vellum spine which richly decorated with gilt. There is some wear to extremities of the corners, but generally the book is clean and the gilt is bright. It is contained in a made to order solander box. All books are shipped from South Africa. We will email with price quote for shipping.

An Autobiography of Buffalo Bill (Colonel W. F. Cody)

New York: Cosmopolitan Book Corporation, 1923 - Inscribed to the artist Edward Borein, "1872 / 1924 To Ed. from his loving Mother, Annie B. Boreim" John Edward Borein (1872-1945), son of a California deputy sheriff, was sketching Western subjects at the age of five. Encouraged by his family to become an artist, he matriculated at a San Francisco art school, but left after a month to work as a cowboy. In this pursuit he became highly proficient, although, encouraged by his awed fellow cowhands, he continued to draw and sketch in his spare time and, in 1896, began to see his work in print. He eventually developed an enviable competence as a watercolorist, but gave up painting in oils when he compared his work - unfavorably - with that of his friend Charles M. Russell In 1906 Borein moved to New York to work as an illustrator, and studied etching - which would become a specialty - at the Art Students' League. It was this which set him apart from his peers in Western art, and nearly 400 of his etchings are recorded. Seeped in the history and allurements of the West, he returned to California permanently in 1919, and it is to his native state that much of his work relates. By the 1930s his watercolors, produced with sparkling, vivid colors and conveying a flavor of authenticity without pretension, were enormously popular; they number over 1,000 examples. He is known as an artist "who got the details right" and his readily identifiable personal style sets him apart from others who depict the landscapes, the inhabitants, the history, and the sun-drenched aridity of the American West Later printing. 8vo. Photo frontispiece, and illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. Publisher's brown pictorial cloth, upper cover and spine titled "Buffalo Bill's Life Story / An Autography", near fine [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Eton Unicorn

Eton, [Printed for the contributors], 1923. Eton, [Printed for the contributors], 1923. The first number Eton, March Thirty-first, MCMXXIII. Quarto. Single quire (20pp), wire stitched into original green wrappers, blue paper title label tipped onto the front wrapper. Faded at the edges, some edge wear and with a short split at the fold. All Published. This hitherto unrecorded periodical seems to have its antecedence in the well known school magazine, The Eton Candle, produced by Acton and Howard in their senior years at the college. By the summer of 1923 when this publication was produced the the contributors had all left Eton and quite what prompted the production of this single issue is not certain. The content however is distinctly more "knowing" than that of the Eton Candle. Sitwell used the introduction, ostensibly a survey of modernist poetry, as an opportunity to take a swipe at her latest bete noir, namely J. C. Squire. Acton writes about Queens (the royal variety) and Howard about a kitty (the purring variety). We have acquired three copies of this publication which had been found together and other than these copies we cannot trace any others. Nor can we find any reference to the Eton Unicorn in the written record.

The Sword of the North. Highland Memories of the Great War

Inverness: Robert Carruthers & Sons, Courier Office,, 1923. Quarto. Original red buckram, title gilt to the spine and to the upper board together with a block of a highlander. Profusely illustrated. A little rubbed and soiled, hinges professionally restored, endpapers spotted, but overall a very good copy. First edition. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper; "To Lloyd George, Esq., Ex-Prime Minister, from the Author, Dugald MacEchern, v[ide] p. 71 et seq. Article on Georgetown". The note refers to the section describing the Scottish Filling Factory, built in 1915, and unofficially renamed Georgetown when Lloyd George became PM in December 1916. "This book was at first intended to be a personal and local record, but later widened its scope so as to give a view of the general effort made by the Northern Highlands in the Great War. It is not a history, but rather an impression. I only put one stone on the cairn" (Preface). An excellent association copy of this informative, and genuinely uncommon, book.

        The Prophet

New York: Knopf. 1923. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good+. 1923, True first printing. Hardcover, 8vo., original black cloth with title and design in gilt. 107 pp., with 12 illustrations in b&w. Very Good+, no dust jacket. Slight dulling to the spine cloth, and the gilt lettering of 'Knopf' is rubbed; also slight wear at the spine ends and corners. Barely noticeable lean to the spine. There is a small area of browning at the top margin of pages 32 and 33. Clean, unmarked text. Now housed in a custom clamshell slipcase. A rare first edition of this immensely popular book. Digital images available upon request. The book was published in an ambitious print run of 2,000, but only sold a little over 1,100 of them in the first year. After that, sales exploded: double the next year, double that in the following year, and on to 2014, with the book now in its 165th printing and with sales topping 100 million in total. The masterpiece by this Lebanese author, who lived 1883-1931, is a series of 26 prose poetry essays in which Almustafa, the prophet, who is on his way to board a ship that will take him to his homeland after years of living in the fictional town of Orphalese, tarries to speak to a group of people of the lessons he has learned while living abroad. It is actually a wonderful book, with a light, optimistic wisdom to it that bears traces of the dervishes, of Rumi and of Omar Khayam.

        THREE STORIES & TEN POEMS

[Paris: Contact Editions, 1923].. Pale blue printed wrappers. Probably rescued from either a binding or mishap by an earlier owner: rebacked, with matching paper (but discolored along the lower joint with the rear wrapper), edges moderately smoke darkened, a few incidental creases, occasional shallow discolorations along the extreme lower edges, wrapper fold-ins trimmed away; a sound survivor. First edition of the author's first book -- although only the sequential nature of the volumes in the Three Mountains Inquest series prevented >in our time< from preceding it. One of 300 copies printed in Dijon by Maurice Darantiere. Six of the poems had seen prior publication in POETRY (Jan. 1923). The short stories -- "Up in Michigan," "Out of Season," and "My Old Man" -- are here first published. Obviously not a copy for the fastidious, but offered at a modest percentage of the price for a very good copy. HANNEMAN 1a.
