The Prospects of Industrial Civilisation

London: George Allen & Unwin,, 1923. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles and rules in yellow. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the spine-tanned jacket split at the front joint. First edition, first impression of the book produced in collaboration between Bertrand and his second wife Dora, inspired by their separate (but simultaneous) visits to Bolshevik Russia in 1920. The book examines the nature of industry and machinery in shaping mankind's future both politically and philosophically. This copy is from the library of Russell's friend and publisher Stanley Unwin, and includes, laid in, a revealing and involved 1982 typed letter signed from Dora Russell addressed to Rayner Unwin, in which she responds to Unwin's rejection of "my Machine Age book" (which was eventually published the following year by Routledge & Kegan Paul as "Religion of the Machine Age"). In the letter she makes a strident claim concerning the present book, that "If it had not been for my insights about industrialism in 1920, the book ... would not have been written. It was very much my book, we issued it as joint and I left the actual writing to Bertie. Incidentally, for years after the divorce, he did me out of half of the royalties".

Marked with an asterisk by Weil, denoting a major paper. Einstein's attempts to formulate a unified field theory stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the general relativity theory, which did not adequately incorporate the electromagnetic field into the geometry of space-time. In 1918 Hermann Weyl had begun investigating the possibility of constructing a unified field theory preserving the dimensionality of space-time while formally altering its geometry, making it a special case of the class known as affine geometries. Einstein's first investigation of Weyl's ideas, published in the present paper, introduced the notion of distant parallelism; however Einstein later rejected Weyl's theory..

Partial tanning to endpapers, and one corner nicked, otherwise a fine copy in the dust jacket with tanned spine panel and some paper tape reinforcement. First UK edition. The Seltzer dust jacket advertised this work in bold terms, calling it "a remarkable statement of the philosophy of D. H. Lawrence ... an important work, vital to every man and woman. The best of Mr. Lawrence's extraordinary genius has gone into the making of this book. It will arose heated discussion ... In our opinion it is the most important work that has appeared since the publication of Nietzche's "Zarathustra".
