Very Good. Hardcover. A fine collection of Conrad's pre-eminent works. Joseph Conrad (1857-1954) was a Polishemigr to England who has become one of the most easily-recognisable names in 20th-century literature. Born in the Ukraine to an upper-middle-classPolish family at the height of the Russian Empire; Conrad moved frequently as a child, first with his activist father, andthen in theguardianship of his uncle when his father's activities against the Russians increased in intensity. Displaced repeatedly, the young Joseph found solace in fanstastic tales of the sea written by English and American sailors, and was remembered from an early age for his gift at spinning nautical yarns. As he came of age, Conrad was under strongly-worded advice from his family to buck the Russian yoke by taking foreign citizenship. Forsaking France (and with it the spectre of compulsory military service), Conrad settled in England in 1874 and joined the Merchant Navy, spending 19 years in service and attaining the rank of Captain. Blending a continental sense of tragic realitywith romantic, sea-bound English ideals, utilisinga degree ofskill never before (or arguably since) seen, Conrad's works pit the indomitable power of the human will against the cruel vagaries and indifference of fate. Here we have a very sound collection of his most famous novels and short stories as well as several essays in combined volumes; to includeA Set of Six Almayer's Folly An Outcast of the IslandsLord JimNostromoNotes on Life and LettersRomanceThe Arrow of GoldThe InheritorsThe Mirror of the Sea (and A Personal Record)The Nigger of the Narcissus (and Typhoon)The RescueThe Secret Agent The Shadow Line 'Twixt Land and SeaUnder Western EyesVictoryYouth (and Two Other Stories). Traumatic shock. Presentation copy

New York: Appleton, 1923 New York: Appleton, 1923. Cannon, Walter B. (1871-1945). Traumatic shock. xvii, 201pp. Text illustrations. New York & London: D. Appleton, 1923. 263 x 173 mm. Original gilt-stamped cloth, one corner bumped. Light toning but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by Cannon to Sir Cuthbert Wallace (1867-1944) on slip tipped to front pastedown: ?To Sir Cuthbert Wallace with gratitude for your kindness and encouragement during our work in old B?une. Walter B. Cannon.? First Edition. Cannon, professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School, was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century, making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion, the autonomic nervous system, homeostasis, and stress response. ?In the fall of 1916, before the United States entered World War I, the National Research Council named Cannon a member of a committee on traumatic shock. Later he joined the Harvard University Hospital Unit. On his way to France in May 1917, he stopped in London and arranged with Fletcher, first secretary of the Medical Research Committee, to join the group of physicians and surgeons of the British Expeditionary Forces who were dealing with shock cases at the Casualty Clearing Station at B?une. . . . Initially Cannon and his associates in the field concentrated their therapeutic efforts on treating the acidosis that accompanies shock. Later they recognized that the acidosis was merely a secondary phenomenon, the result of the inadequacy of tissue perfusion. In 1923 Cannon summarized his wartime experience in Traumatic Shock? (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). Cannon presented this copy of Traumatic Shock to his commanding officer at B?une, Colonel Cuthbert Sidney Wallace, consulting surgeon to the First Army, British Expeditionary Force. Cannon noted in his preface that ?We were serving under Colonel Cuthbert Wallace, later Major-General Sir Cuthbert Wallace, who was as eager as any of us to secure further knowledge of shock and who helped and encouraged us in our efforts? (p. ix).

Die Entführung aus dem Serail. Lithographische Skizzen.

(Ohne Ort und Druck, 1923).. Groß-Quart.

Hollywoodland. The Supreme Achievement in Community Building. Hollywood Land Tracts No. 6450 9367 9594

Los Angeles.: S. H. Woodruff., No date. Ca. 1923.. Los Angeles.: S. H. Woodruff.. No date. Ca. 1923.. Black and white plat map, 34 x 27 inches, folding to 8 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches. 3/4 inch soiled spot at upper mid sheet; short splits at some fold intersections with two longer separations; 1 1/2 x 1/8 inch area of paper loss at mid left fold; still overall good condition. On this huge real estate map are itemized approximately 20 "Advantages of Hollywoodland": these include "Wonderful Climate"; "Elbow Room"; "View"; "Your View in Hollywoodland is Protected by the Architectural Restrictions"; "Investment: With Los Angeles, destined to be a City of Millions - Hollywoodland is so situated that homesites purchased today will be worth fortunes." Mary Mallory, in her article "Hollywoodland--Tycoons and visionaries created an iconic America Neighborhood" (Discover Hollywood Magazine: Summer 2011) writes: "In 1905 streetcar tycoons and brothers-in-law Eli P. Clark and M. H. Sherman acquired 640 acres at the very top of [Beachwood] canyon. Clark and Sherman formed a partnership in 1923 with Harry Chandler, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times, and respected real estate developers Tracy E. Shoults and S. H. Woodruff, to create an exclusive hillside community, with Chandler providing free advertising through stories in the newspaper, and Shoults and Woodruff lending stellar reputations as developers of Los Angeles' upscale Windsor and Marlborough Square tracts. The partnership announced the opening of Hollywoodland in the March 31, 1923 edition of the Los Angeles Times, promoting it as the first themed hillside residential development in the United States. Advertisements claimed the neighborhood 'the supreme achievement of community building,' and promoted its European atmosphere. Billboards promoting real estate developments proliferated around Los Angeles, but Hollywoodland's outshone them all. Advertising man John Roche designed letters 50 feet high and 30 feet wide spelling out the name Hollywoodland to dwarf any other sign in the area.... The sign was lined by 4,000 20-watt light bulbs placed eight inches apart that spelled out 'Holly,' 'Wood,' 'Land,' 'Hollywoodland' continuously when lit at night. On clear nights, it was supposedly visible all the way to Catalina Island." The map was created by Engineering Service Corp, Engineers. An uncommon real estate map; WorldCat lists only one library holding (Yale). Very good condition save for issues noted. .

THE SHIP THAT SAILED TO MARS - SIGNED A Fantasy

Harrap [], 1923. Harrap [], 1923. First edition. One of only 2000 copies produced, of which 250 were distributed in America by Stokes. This is a lavish production, measuring 31cm x 23cm. White vellum spine elaborately decorated in gilt, and grey paper covered boards lettered in dark grey. Protected by the original dustwrapper. This copy signed by the author on the title page and dated April 1930. A beautiful copy of the book in very near fine condition. The spine remains white and crisp, with none of the usual browning. There is light bumping to the corners and a bookseller's stamp to the front endpaper. The dustwrapper is in very good condition, with some slight chipping to the spine ends and corners and a repaired tear to the upper panel. The book is made up of sheets of grey art paper onto which are mounted forty-eight sumptuous colour plates, interspersed with sheets of calligraphic and poetic text also mounted onto art paper. This glorious production, which began like so many tales as an entertainment for the author's son, was two years in the making and the result is a striking work of fantasy. "Although it was difficult to believe, the Old Man had not always been old, and in his youth, he had said "I will go to Mars"...But those around him, Scientists and Astronomers some cried out in scorn" so begins the tale. The old man spends his working life in a dull and sleepy office, all the time dreaming and planning a trip to Mars. His dream becomes reality when the fairies he has long believed in come to his aid and together they design and build a flying ship. It is loaded with gifts for the inhabitants of Mars and provisions, including a cow to furnish them with fresh milk. The ship journeys to far flung planets, experiencing adventures and dangers along the way. Most unusually this copy not only retains its original dustwrapper, but is the only signed copy we have encountered.
