A group of his works presented by him to actress Margot Collis (Marguerite Ruddock)]: Essays; Autobiographies; Plays; Collected Poems; Later Poems; Plays and Controversies.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited 1923-34 - Together 6 works, octavo. Original green or red cloth, titles to spine gilt, pages untrimmed. Light rubbing to ends of spines, corners gently bumped, some sunning to spines, a few works with soiling and markings to spine and boards, 5 inner hinges cracked, Collected Poems with bumping to upper board edge, occasional spotting. Overall a very good group of first and early editions. Presentation copies to his lover Margot Collis, inscribed by Yeats "To Margot from her friend W B Yeats Oct 1934" on the front free endpaper or half-title in four works. Plays in Prose and Verse contains two authorial annotations, signed by Yeats with his initials, one to the beginning of the play Deirdre ("I have crossed out a number of needless lines in the opening of the play. WBY"); another at the end of The Player Queen: "I have altered the end. As last played in Dublin Decima put on a mask left behind by the players [and] makes them dance. They have shed their animal forms. She throws them money - if I remember rightly - her ambiguous words are a farewell to all this she has loved. They get banishment but with great rewards. WBY." Later Poems, uninscribed, has Collis's pencil ownership inscription dated 20 September 1930 and so was hers before she met Yeats. Plays and Controversies is also uninscribed. Margot Collis was the stage name used by the Irish actress Marguerite Ruddock (1907-1951). Her intense relationship with Yeats started in the year these books were presented. Collis was also a poet and Yeats is said to have helped edit her works; he included some of her work in his edition of the Oxford Book of Modern Verse (1936). At the time of her relationship with Yeats, Collis was married to actor Raymond Lovell. She fell passionately in love with Yeats, though he remained married to Georgie. The relationship unravelled and Collis became unstable, offering Yeats the inspiration for his poem "A Crazed Girl". Their correspondence was later published under the title Ah, Sweet Dancer (1970). The works are in various editions: Plays and Controversies (1923) and Essays (1924) are first editions; Autobiographies (1926) is the first collected edition; Collected Poems (1934) is second impression; Plays in Prose and Verse (Dec. 1931) is fourth impression; and Later Poems (Mar. 1926) is also fourth impression. Laid-in is a 4-page autograph letter signed "BM" (unidentified; on 25 Burton Court SW3 letterhead) advising the unnamed recipient (probably Yeats) on the writing of a play and the portrayal of characters.       Bonn, Leipzig, Kurt Schroeder, Leiden, E.J. Brill, 1923-1927.6 volumes in 7. Original half cloth (5) and wrappers (2).Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) was a famous Dutch scholar of Oriental cultures and languages and Advisor on Native Affairs to the colonial government of the Netherlands East Indies. 'He knew more about Islam than the best-informed Muslim and more about colonial government than the Colonial Office itself, and many an opponent was antagonised or even silenced by his vitrolic criticism'.With Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) a new chapter begins in Dutch Islam scholarship in general and the study of Indonesian Islam in particular. .. In spite of all the criticism, no one intending to seriously study Islam in Indonesia will be able to avoid reading Snouck Hurgronje's work and consulting them again and again' (Boland-Farjon, Islam in Indonesia, p.16-17). The collected works is an authorised edition with corrections by the author. It includes all his publications until 1927 with the exception of his largest monographs.

Autograph postcard signed to Otto Hahn

Utrecht, 1923. Meitner, Lise (1878-1968). Autograph picture postcard signed, in German, to Otto Hahn (1879-1968). Utrecht, 14 September 1923 (postmarked the next day). 89 x 138 mm. One corner a bit bent, but very good. A fascinating postcard documenting not only the decades-long friendship and research collaboration between Meitner and Hahn, co-discoverers of nuclear fission, but also Meitner’s friendship with Einstein and the important Dutch physicist Paul Ehrenfest with whom she had been friends since her student days. [I have just traveled here from Leiden and am sitting in the railway station, for the first time without accompanying protection. In Leiden Einstein, with whom I spent two wonderful days in Ehrenfest’s house, escorted me to the train. I must leave from here at 4 o’clock. I will most probably return on Sunday morning; on the evening of the 16th I must [. . .] in Einthoven, where I am going tomorrow. I hope you are all well. Many hearty greetings, your Lise M. Greetings also to the Institute youth.] Meinter wrote the postcard during her first visit to the Netherlands, a lecture tour arranged by her friend Dirk Coster, professor of physics at the University of Groningen. Coster would later play a critical role in Meitner’s life: In 1938 he persuaded her to leave Nazi Germany to avoid persecution as a Jew, and accompanied her during her the first leg of her escape, from Germany to the Netherlands. Meitner obtained her doctorate in physics from the University of Vienna in 1905, where she became friends with her fellow student Paul Ehrenfest. In 1907 Max Planck invited her to Berlin to continue her post-doctoral studies; there she met radio-chemist Otto Hahn, who would be her research partner for the next thirty years, and also made the acquaintance of Einstein. During those early years in Berlin, before the outbreak of World War I, Einstein, Ehrenfest, Meitner and others would often gather at Planck’s home for long evenings of music and conversation. In 1912 Hahn and Meitner joined the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin (Meitner as an unpaid â€

        Liebesunterhaltung. Lithographie.

1923. Signiert \"Rudolf Schlichter\". Noted Edison Chief Engineer Charles Lorenzo Clarke Draws and Describes "Prismatic Halo" Vision Problem

1923 - Archive. Fascinating small archive from the man who, during his long collaboration with Thomas Edison, drew the now familiar horseshoe filament for the light bulb and became Chief Engineer of Edison Electric Light Co. The topic here is not the lightbulb, but Clarke's vision problems. The archive's highlight is a beautiful watercolor illustration of a "prismatic halo." 1. CHARLES LORENZO CLARKE. Watercolor. Depiction of the dramatic "prismatic halo," hand-painted, signed and dated. Ca. August 1923. On cold-pressed watercolor paper. With CHARLES LORENZO CLARKE. Retained carbon copy of Autograph Letter Signed, to Dr. Myles Standish, President of the American Ophthalmology Society (and a descendant of the Pilgrim captain). Schenectady, August 3/16, 1923, 9 pp., with 2 pp. addenda, 8 x 10½ in. Re the "Appearance and Other Characteristics of a Prismatic Halo."Having worn glasses since age 11, and now 70, he writes: "finally, one night, I became conscious of seeing something that I had never seen before.a halo in rainbow colors.Given a clear light in a clear atmosphere.the halo becomes.brilliant - as real as a bright rainbow, and more vivid by contrast because set in black. My fifty years experience in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, in field, shop and laboratory, has schooled me to close observation and the correlation of physical phenomena.I have devoted much time in the past ten years to special spectroscopic investigations involving careful discrimination of colors and line structure in spectra. Naturally, the picture is lacking in that lustrous limpidity and mellowness of tone that I actually see.But I assure you that I see all these details.I trust that.what I have said may, in some way, be made of use in your profession for the good of humanity."2. CHARLES LORENZO CLARKE. Autograph Manuscript, in pencil, with measurements of his halo, using "stereo field glasses." 1 p. 7 x 10 ½ in.3. MYLES STANDISH. Autograph Letter Signed, to Charles Lorenzo Clarke. Boston, Mass., August 12, 1923. 6 pp. 6 x 7 ¼ in."Your beautiful drawing of the halo has been received by me, and the no less admirable verbal account of its appearance and characteristics. I am meditating writing an article on the subject of colored haloes. No such accurately observed description exists in ophthalmic literature. It will be a classic. When Coolidge was nominated, Vice Pres. Curtis asked me, 'What kind of a man is Coolidge?' I told him his career and related his physical and mental characteristics. When I finished he said, 'Myles, that man will be President of the United States.'.I judged from published snap-shot photographs that he was suffering from a chronic kidney trouble. Events.have confirmed that snap diagnosis." With envelope, tipped to album page.4. CHARLES LORENZO CLARKE. Retained carbon copy of an Autograph Letter Signed, to Dr. Myles Standish. 1928, 1 p."I presume you will be traveling northward from Miami with the other migratory birds, as the sun climbs higher. It is now nearly 4-1/2 months since Dr. Ellis performed my cataract operation. I have beautiful normal sight."5. DR. EDWARD K. ELLIS. Autograph Letter Signed, to Charles Lorenzo Clarke. Boston, Mass. Apr. 26, 1928, 2 pp. With envelope."I was much pleased to find you had benefited by the needling operation.I am mailing.your very interesting observations on the halo. I hope you will not have occasion to observe any more, however. I received a note from Mrs. Standish this morning, saying that Dr. Standish had felt very ill, but is better now."6. Lengthy newspaper obituary of Standish, meticulously mounted and signed by Clarke on sheet, with his manuscript tribute below: "Myles was my Bowdoin College classmate and lifelong friend.and always the enlivening spirit of our reunions. He was an outstanding example of able, cultured manhood."7. Pamphlet. "Memoir of Myles Standish." 1928, copperplate portrait . (See website for full description)

Washington The Beautiful Capital of the Nation. Baltimore and Ohio. America's First Railroad. Washington's First Railroad....

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. 1923. Bird's eye view, uncolored, image and text approximately 20 1/2 x 29 inches on sheet 21 3/4 x 31 1/4 inches, published folded now archivally mounted on linen. Offset from verso barely visible in upper left corner. A spectacular bird's eye view of Washington D.C. with the Capitol and Library of Congress at lower centre. The text at lower right explains the magnitude of the achievement in its creation: "WASHINGTON. THE HEART OF THE NATION. This Aero View of Washington is the most remarkable map picture that has ever been made. Remarkable for its great range of vision and the stupendous task in making such a drawing and the extreme accuracy in the architectural "lay-out." It shows the city in perspective from a point of vantage east of the Congressional Library looking northwest, thus including the most attractive suburbs with the Capitol in the foreground. This work occupied two years of continuous time of the greatest Bird's-Eye View artist in the country. No map view of this vast and comprehensive nature has ever been made of any City and it is especially a great accomplishment when it is considered that Washington's immense area of public buildings, parks and suburbs is here shown in a picture from which anyone may become familiar with locations of the streets, business blocks and public buildings. Even though it has a "Bird's-Eye View" effect, it has all been sketched from the ground and every block and building is in proper survey."The legend beneath the image lists the map "Location of all the Public Buildings and Places of Interest." On close examination one notices the identification of not only the public buildings but many commercial establishments which are named in tiny script....

Meine Augen sind müde. Plakatmanifest und Ausstellungskatalog 'Malereien von Hundertwasser' 17. Okt. - 24. Nov. 1957.

31,5 x 89 cm. 1 Bogen, beidseitig bedruckt (Offset), gefaltet.
