        Reminiscences Of A Stock Operator.

New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, 1923. First edition, early printing of this Wall Street classic, published the same year as the first. Octavo, original green cloth. Fine in the rare original dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. First published in 1923, Reminiscences of a Stock Operator is the most widely read, highly recommended investment book ever. Generations of readers have found that it has more to teach them about markets and people than years of experience. It tells the thinly disguised biography of Jesse Livermore, a remarkable character who first started speculating in New England bucket shops at the turn of the century. Livermore, who was banned from these shady operations because of his winning ways, soon moved to Wall Street where he made and lost his fortune several times over. What makes this book so valuable are the observations that Lefèvre records about investing, speculating, and the nature of the market itself. "A must-read classic for all investors, whether brand-new or experienced" (William O'Neil).

        War Memorial.

Small 8vo., original heavy grey wrappers. With front cover and title-page illustration from a wood engraving by David Jones and a single wood engraving by Gill. The engraving is a preliminary study for Gill's relief sculpture entitled "Christ and the Money-Changers" and was the image used for the War Memorial Gill designed for Leeds College.. Wrappers slightly browned otherwise a very good copy. First edition. This pamphlet is Gill's explanation of the work, in which he "commemorates the most just of all wars -- the war of Justice against Cupidity." With the bookplate of Michael Gerveys Sewell. Michael Gerveys Sewell, later Father Brocard Sewell, left school at 16 and found work as a general factotum in the London Office of 'GK's Weekly', the paper founded by GK Chesterton. Here he met writers, thinkers and artists. Among the many were, the printer and writer Hilary Pepler, a Quaker who converted to Roman Catholicism, Henry Williamson, the writer of Tarka the Otter and more controversial books, and Arthur Machen, a 'black-arts' writer. After he left GK's he went to join the Eric Gill's artistic community at Ditchling in Sussex. In that Catholic community he found an emotional haven and professional direction, and stayed for five years working as a compositor.

[THE RAT-CRUSHER: EARLY 1920s COLLABORATION OF THE GREATS] Krysodav [i.e. The Rat-Crusher]. #1-3 [full]

Moscow: Mospoligraf, 1923. In original illustrated publisher's wrappers. #1 and #2 have some restorations of the spines. Otherwise a very good set. Extremely rare. Not found in the Worldcat. The print run of the issues is 16000 (#1), 12000 (#2) and 8000 (#3). Krysodav was the meeting point of three important early Soviet art tendencies: LEF group, Krokodil group and 41 degrees from Tbilisi, Georgia. This satirical periodical is little-known but it's a remarkable example of collaboration of many famous personalities that was only possible in the early Soviet times. The magazine was edited by young Ukrainian writers who lived in Moscow at the time: Leonid Nedolia (later the editor-in-chief of YUGO-LEF magazine) and Mark Gai. The literary sections of the magazine were presented by Maiakovsky, Igor Terentiev, Sergei Tretiakov, Nikolay Aseev, Osip Brik, Alexey Kruchionykh, Vsevolod Meyrhold and others. Among artists were Kirill Zdanevich, Dmitri Moor, Boris Zemenkov, Sergei Makletsov, Boris Efimov. Nikolay Ilyin was the printing editor. The magazine is filled with lithographic images including photomontages, occusatory poems and stories, portraying the enemies of the Soviet state in a ridiculous manner. Maiakovsky wrote the poem 'My' [i.e. Us] for the front cover of the first issue of Krysodav. Sergei Tretiakov wrote the hymn of the magazine that also appeared in the first issue: in his poem Krysodav is the metaphor for USSR. Sergei Makletsov's impressive collage 'Nozhnitsy po Trotskomu' [i.e. The Scissors according to Trotsky] showing Red Army soldier cutting 'former people' with giant scissors. This was made to illustrate Trotsky's postulate about the difference in prices between industrial and agricultural goods during NEP. The magazine with such illustration would be dangerous to keep through 1930-40s and on. The second issue's cover includes very unusual photo-montage by Igor Terentiev showing the fight against contraband. In the same issue caricature of NEP-man could be found as well as interesting anti-Nazi caricatures by Kirill Zdanevich. The back cover is illustrated again by Zdanevich showing black Red-Army soldier proclaiming 'Workers of the world, unite!' Remarkable is the cover of #3 showing Lenin as a Red-Army soldier smilingly rolling over the map of Istanbul with scared people trying to escape from it. #3 is printed on a worse paper which suggests that Krysodav was closed down to paper shortage like many other periodicals of the early 1920s.

Washington The Beautiful Capital of the Nation. Baltimore and Ohio. America's First Railroad. Washington's First Railroad....

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. 1923. Bird's eye view, uncolored, image and text approximately 20 1/2 x 29 inches on sheet 21 3/4 x 31 1/4 inches, published folded now archivally mounted on linen. Offset from verso barely visible in upper left corner. A spectacular bird's eye view of Washington D.C. with the Capitol and Library of Congress at lower centre. The text at lower right explains the magnitude of the achievement in its creation: "WASHINGTON. THE HEART OF THE NATION. This Aero View of Washington is the most remarkable map picture that has ever been made. Remarkable for its great range of vision and the stupendous task in making such a drawing and the extreme accuracy in the architectural "lay-out." It shows the city in perspective from a point of vantage east of the Congressional Library looking northwest, thus including the most attractive suburbs with the Capitol in the foreground. This work occupied two years of continuous time of the greatest Bird's-Eye View artist in the country. No map view of this vast and comprehensive nature has ever been made of any City and it is especially a great accomplishment when it is considered that Washington's immense area of public buildings, parks and suburbs is here shown in a picture from which anyone may become familiar with locations of the streets, business blocks and public buildings. Even though it has a "Bird's-Eye View" effect, it has all been sketched from the ground and every block and building is in proper survey."The legend beneath the image lists the map "Location of all the Public Buildings and Places of Interest." On close examination one notices the identification of not only the public buildings but many commercial establishments which are named in tiny script....

Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe Izdatel'stvo, 1923. |~||~||~||~| The extremely rare first edition of Mayakovsky's poem with Rodchenko's famous photomontage cover of Lily Brik. One of the most important and sought-after constructivist books. Although the edition was 300 copies, as with most Russian books from this period, very few would seem to have survived. Parr calls it "one of the first, and certainly the finest, examples of the Constructivist marriage between typography and photomontage in its first phase- before it became exclusiveky propagandist in tenor. It is also one of the best examples in phototbook history of a union that is rather more difficult to bring off successfully-that between photography and text." Rowell & Wye 505. Parr/Badger I, 91.       London: J. Davy and Sons, 1923. Octavo, frontispiece, neatly annotated; in original green printed wrappers, cloth box. A very good copy of this auction catalogue from the 1923 Bolckow sale by Sotheby's, one of the most important sales of manuscript materials relating to Captain Cook. This copy was owned by someone who attended the sale and recorded prices in pencil throughout. The sale included the autograph manuscript of Cook's diary of the first voyage, correspondence with the Admiralty (including his "Secret Instructions" for the first voyage), the Log Books of both HMS Endeavour and Wallis' HMS Dolphin, and Cook's manuscript charts of Newfoundland. All of these, as the manuscript notes attest, were acquired by William Herbert Ifould for the Mitchell Library in Sydney, for the princely sum of £6780.Bolckow was the MP for Middlesbrough from 1868 until his death in 1878. A wealthy industrialist, he built Marton Hall in Yorkshire - the grounds included the site of Cook's birthplace, which Bolckow marked with a granite urn. He was a famous and assiduous collector of Cook memorabilia, which he displayed as part of his collection in Marton Hall.

A Quantum Theory of the Scattering of X-rays by Light Elements.

Lancaster, PA & Corning, NY: American Physical Society, [1923]. First edition of the 'Compton effect,' which demonstrated the existence of quanta of electromagnetic radiation, later called photons. "This discovery 'created a sensation among the physicists of the time.' There were the inevitable controversies surrounding a discovery of such major proportions. Nevertheless, the photon idea was rapidly accepted. Sommerfeld incorporated the Compton effect in his new edition of Atombau und Spektrallinien with the comment, 'It is probably the most important discovery which could have been made in the current state of physics'" (Pais, Subtle is the Lord, p. 414). "Arthur Holly Compton will always be remembered as one of the world's great physicists. His discovery of the Compton effect, so vital in the development of quantum physics, has ensured him a secure place among the great scientists" (DSB). The explanation and measurement of the Compton effect earned Compton a share of the Nobel Prize in physics in 1927. Rare in unrestored original printed wrappers. Compton (1892-1962) received his PhD from Princeton in 1916 for research on the intensity distribution of X-rays reflected from crystals. After a period working for the Westinghouse Company he returned to fundamental research in 1919, when he obtained one of the first National Research Council Fellowships (established by Millikan). He used it to spend a year at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, where he continued his experiments on the scattering of radiation. In 1920 Compton moved to Washington University in St. Louis, where he continued his work on X-ray scattering, using a Bragg spectrometer he had brought from Cambridge. By this time it had become apparent that the scattered radiation had a wavelength longer than that of the primary radiation, and that the shift of wavelength varied with the scattering angle: this became known as the Compton effect. "It was only late in 1922, when considering all data available to him, that Compton saw the necessity for a light quantum with energy and momentum to explain the scattering of X-rays. Compton read a paper entitled 'A quantum theory of the scattering of X-rays by light elements' at a meeting of the American Physical Society in Chicago, which took place on 1 and 2 December 1922. Its abstract begins as follows: "The hypothesis is suggested that when an X-ray quantum is scattered it spends all its energy and momentum upon some particular electron. The electron in turn scatters the ray to some definite direction. The change in momentum of the X-ray quantum due to the change in direction of its propagation results in a recoil of the scattering electron. The energy in the scattered quantum is thus less than the energy of the primary quantum by the kinetic energy of recoil of the scattering electron." "The full paper was published a little later [the offered paper]. It contains ... the calculation of the shift in wavelength between primary and secondary radiation as a function of scattering angle. Compton had data for only one scattering angle, 90 degrees, for which he had measured the spectrum. It was obtained with a primary radiation which was the K radiation of molybdenum produced by an X-ray tube with a molybdenum anticathode" (Brandt, The Harvest of a Century, Chapter 31). "The Compton effect, aptly characterized by Karl K. Darrow as one of the most superbly lucid processes in nature, is now part of the fabric of physics; and it is of interest to recall its influence on the development of the quantum theory during the years 1923-1930. "In the first place, it provided conclusive proof that Einstein's concept of a photon as having both energy and directed momentum was essentially correct. Einstein himself brought considerable attention to Compton's discovery by his discussions at the Berlin seminars. Interest was also high at Gottingen, Munich, Zurich, Copenhagen, and other Continental centers where theoretical physics was rapidly developing. "However, the quantitative proof of the photon character of radiation had been established by Compton's use of a Bragg crystal spectrometer, the function of which depended directly on the wave nature of X-rays. Thus a more general synthesis was clearly required, in which both the corpuscular photon and the electromagnetic wave would be included and would continue to play the roles demanded by experiment... "The final great synthesis of quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics was forced upon physics by the crucial experiments of the Compton effect, electron diffraction, space quantization, and the existence of sharp spectral lines, which could not be brought into line with classical theory. It required the final relativistic form of quantum mechanics, developed by Paul Dirac, to give a completely quantitative explanation of Compton scattering in regard to both intensity and state of polarization by the formula derived by O. Klein and Nishina from the Dirac relativistic theory of the electron" (DSB). For a detailed account of Compton's work, see the Introduction to Scientific Papers of Arthur Holly Compton: X-ray and other studies, University of Chicago Press, 1974. In: Physical Review, Second Series, Vol. 25, No. 5, May 1923, pp. 483-502.

Washington The Beautiful Capital of the Nation Baltimore and Ohio America's First Railroad Washington's First Railroad

Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.. 1923.. Even though it has a "Bird's-Eye View" effect, it has all been sketched from the ground and every block and building is in proper survey." The legend beneath the image lists the map "Location of all the Public Buildings and Places of Interest." On close examination one notices the identification of not only the public buildings but many commercial establishments which are named in tiny script. .
