A fine example.Charles de Sousy Ricketts RA (1866-1931) was a versatile English artist, illustrator, author and printer, and is best known for his work as book designer and typographer from 1896 to 1904 with the Vale Press, and his work in the theatre as a set and costume designer. Ricketts was born in Geneva to a French mother and an English father. He grew up mainly in France and Italy. He began his studies in art at the City and Guilds Technical Art School in Lambeth, in 1882, after both his parents had died. At the Art School he met Charles Shannon (1863-1937), painter and lithographer, who would be his lifelong partner in both his artistic and personal life. On the advice of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, they settled in England rather than abroad. Ricketts became a celebrated and sought-after designer for the stage. "Mr Ricketts is infallible in his ideas on costume" observed The Times. Plays on which he worked included Oscar Wilde's Salome (1906), Laurence Binyon's Attila (1907), King Lear (1909), Bernard Shaw's The Dark Lady (1910), Arnold Bennett's Judith (1916), Shaw's Annajanska, the Bolshevik Empress (1918), Maurice Maeterlinck's The Betrothal (1920), Shaw's Saint Joan (1924), and Macbeth (1926).

        Alef-Bet

Verlag "Lasefer" S. D. Saltzmann. Printed by Richard Labisch & Co., Berlin 1923 - 8vo. 25 cm. 30 unnumbered pages, 27 of which have a chromolithographic, "illuminated" illustration of the Hebrew letter, and an object or thing which begins with that letter, as typical of ABC books, other than this one is using the Hebrew alphabet. The coloring, especially the profuse use of gold set against a gray slate backdrop, is riveting, and together with the general feel and style of the illustrations, relates easily to the Jugendstil book illustrations so prevalent in Germanic children's books of the period. Raban was a teacher of the Bezalel School of Art. The book is uncommon in its original edition, which this is. Moderate to arguably heavy wear and soiling. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Die Mappe weist außen Flecken auf, kleine Einrisse an den Umklappen, insgesamt aber gutes Exemplar. Good copy with 10 handsigned graphics. "Born and initially trained in Lodz, Poland, Ze'ev Raban (1890-1970) studied in a variety of academies around Europe - the School of Applied Art in Munich, the Beaux-Arts Academy in Paris, and the Royal Academy of Art in Brussels. In 1911 he met Boris Schatz, the founder of the Bezalel Academy, a Zionist inspired school begun in 1903 to encourage a new Jewish cultural/art/craft tradition in the Jewish homeland. Schatz's goal for the Bezalel Academy and Workshops, in which Raban participated starting in 1912, was to establish a Jewish arts and crafts tradition that combined the best of European and indigenous Middle-Eastern cultures. Raban soon became a major influence at the Bezalel. He played a central role at the Academy teaching repoussé work, painting, and sculpture and then directing the Graphics Press and the Industrial Art Studio of the Bezalel Academy. By 1914 the majority of works produced in the Bezalel workshops were designed by Raban. But arguably his most important contributions were the illustrations he made for the various books he published - the Song of Songs, the Book of Ruth, the Book of Esther, the Book of Job, and the Passover Haggadah. These illustrations represent the pinnacle of the "Bezalel Style" - a fusion of ‘oriental' art and Jugendstil. (Art at the Center Judaica Gallery) Subjects: Bible. O. T. Song of Solomon. Hebrew. Raban. ; Bible. ; O. T. ; Song of Solomon. ; English. ; Raban. Colorful endpapers. Features 1923 inscription from Jacob Landau to Cyrus Adler. Ex-library with usual markings. Binding repaired.         Swann's Way

Henry Holt and Company, New York 1923 - 2 vols. 303; 288 p. "Remembrance of Things Past" Part One. Quarter tan cloth with gold design over green boards. Black and gold spine labels are slightly chipped. Ink initials on front loose endpapers. Vol. 1 has slight mark on title page. "Swann's Way" is the first part of Proust's monumental "In Search of Lost Time" (once translated as "Remembrance of Things Past"), introducing its major themes and its unnamed narrator. The book begins with the narrator's reminiscences of early childhood and his family's various neighbours and acquaintances. He then turns his focus on the wealthy Charles Swann and his relationship with the courtesan Odette. First appearing in 1913, the book remains a bitingly satiric but comical evocation of early 20th century French society and addresses a range of philosophical questions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Murder on the Links

Dodd, Mead, New York 1923 - 298 pages. Agatha Christie is widely believed to be the most popular fiction writer of all time. Books she has authored have sold over three billion copies globally. The Murder on the Links is especially popular since it was Christie¿s third mystery (of 66 total mysteries), and one of the scarcest. The story features her famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The plot involves a millionaire, Monsieur Renauld, who asks for Poirot¿s help. Unfortunately, before Poirot can help him he is found dead in an unfinished bunker on a golf course. The first American edition was published by Dodd, Mead in 1923, following its initial first edition published in the U.K. by Bodley Head. The American edition was published in a dark green cloth with orange lettering. The book is dedicated ¿To My Husband, a fellow enthusiast for detective stories, and to whom I am indebted for much helpful advice and criticism.¿ She would subsequently divorce this husband, Archibald Christie, who was a member of Sunningdale, where they had a house in the 1920s. In her auto-biography, she states that ¿all he did was think about golf.¿ In 1971, she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II. D & J C11770. Is it difficult to find good first editions.         Typed Letter, signed ("Galli-Curci"), to the editor of "THE ETUDE", in Philadelphia, in response to his question "What are the 10 greatest musical masterpieces?"

Hotel Schenley, Pittsburg 1923 - 2 pp. on 2 sheets of hotel letterhead. 8vo. "the greatest melody of the 'folk-song' type is Swanee River". The great opera soprano (1882 - 1963) responds:"? You have asked me to choose what I believe are the ten musical masterpieces. It is an impossible question for no matter what ten one chooses it is easy to name another ten equally good. The fact is that there are vastly more than ten musical masterpieces, none of which can be called the 'greatest musical masterpiece' for there are so many forms of writing -- Symphony, Oratorio, Opera, Sonata, Nocturne, Waltz, Etude, Concerto and so on almost ad infinitum that a 'masterpiece' can only be designated as a 'masterpiece' in its idiom. However I shall try.Among Symphonies I should choose Beethoven's 5th. Of the violin concertos the Brahms D major says the most to me although it does not speak so familiarly the language of the violin as do some of the more showy 'bravura' types written with the virtuoso in mind. The literature for the piano is so rich that I shall not even attempt to single out a 'masterpiece'. One thinks of several Beethoven Sonatas, the two Chopin Sonatas, as well as his Ballads, Etudes, Nocturnes, Waltzes-all 'masterpieces.' The same is true of some of the Schubert, Hugo Wolf, Brahma and Schumann songs.I am unable to give an unprejudiced opinion as to the 'greatest opera;' like the fly on the oil painting I am too close to see the whole picture. 'Pelleas and Melisande' of Debussy, Wagner's 'Tristan and Isolde' Verdi's 'Rigoletto' and 'Traviata' are representative of their type. No, the more I think of this question the more impossible it appears. I have not named the 'ten great musical masterpieces' because it cannot be done. I feel reasonably sure of only one-the greatest melody of the 'folk-song' type is Suanee [sic] River, I say this without hesitation ?". Torn at folds, some staining and slight wear.         Autographed Letter Signed about childbirth on personal letterhead

Buffalo, NY 1923 - World acclaimed but controversial American Obstetrician best remembered for his practice of the groundbreaking but dangerous method of childbirth called Internal Podalic Version; changing the position of the fetus within the uterus during childbirth (breach births). A pioneer in the study of childbirth, both his technique and the equipment he developed were unique to him and his few disciples -- yet he performed over 25,000 successful childbirths in a career than spanned half a century. Today doctors usually deliver by Cesarean section any fetus not in the proper position. 1 page, 7.25 x 8.5 inches, Buffalo, New York, January 24, 1923, writing to one of his disciples about Internal Podalic Version, in full: "Your letter just arrived and I will answer it now just to be sure how glad I was to hear from you. I was also glad to hear that you are doing well. The OB work will come, it may be a little slow at first, but remember that the general work makes a good foundation. A man during general work makes friends who later can be used in the special times. Take your time & do not hurry, you will do Versions in time I am sure. Come & see me at anytime. Dr. Reynolds is still handling the Chloroform & will be glad to hear from you that everything is O.K." Also included is an original prescription written by Dr. Potter on his personal script pad for a Ziegler Cord Clamp, used to tie the umbilical cord during childbirth. The letter has natural folds and slight discoloration and creasing on the left side; still in very good condition. The prescription is in fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Japanese beetle hunter Hudson Maxim warns of invasion

[New Jersey]: , c. 1923. [New Jersey], c. 1923. 8.5" x 11". "Seven typed single sided sheets, 8.5"" x 11"", circa 1923, boldly signed by Hudson Maxim on the final page as ""Hudson Maxim"". Undated (but accompanied by a photostat letter dated March 12th, 1923 which references his manuscript). Expected folds with a small staple hole upper left corner. Lightly toned, else near fine.Hudson was a U.S. inventor and chemist who invented a variety of explosives, including smokeless gunpowder, Thomas Edison referred to him as ""the most versatile man in America"". His manuscript first prepares the reader as if Japan is preparing to invade the US and says what our natural response would be; however it then segways into the fact that it is actually a non human invasion. ""America is already invaded right here in New Jersey and the conquest of America has already begun. We cannot console ourselves that our Japanese enemy is not a human enemy for an invading army of real Japanese soldiers, even a million of them, would be a less menace … If we were invaded by a real Japanese army, we might rise up and expel the invaders, or, failing in that, we might purchase our freedom with a heavy indemnity … The Japanese beetle if the most all-devouring, the most universally destructive insect pest in the world.""However it is perhaps his illuminating analysis, one which can be applied to most all invasions, or diseases affecting humans or plants (think Eboli), or even terrorism, natural preventable disasters, or even the man made destruction of our planet's delicate balance and resources, which all drive home the need for a quick response before things get out of control. In sum, he cites the following example of what happens when things are allowed to develop without checks and balances (think metaphorically):""The infestation of the Japanese beetle started in 1916 at Cinnaminson, Burlington County, New Jersey. Less than a square mile was infested the first year, when with the expenditure of but a few dollars the pest could have been easily entirely destroyed. The next year only 2.7 square miles were infested and $100,000 would then have cleaned it up the insect. Even the next year, when only 6.7 square miles were infested, a quarter of a million dollars would have exterminated the pest, yet nothing adequate was done, and the next 48 square miles were infested. In 1920, one hundred and three square miles were infested; in 1921 two hundred and seventy and in 1922, seven hundred and seventy-three. It would now probably cost from ten to fifteen millions of dollars to exterminate the pest, to say nothing of the necessary destruction of every growing plant over the infested area. Every automobile and other vehicle passing into and out of the infested areas would need to be rigidly and thoroughly inspected in order to prevent the beetle from being carried into uninfested territory. From Ten to Fifteen million dollars is certainly a lot of money, but if the beetle is allowed to spread over the territory of the United States -- and it will spread over the entire territory wihtin a few years if not prevented -- it will cost the people of the country more than two BILLION dollars a year …"" A fantastic manuscript with a fascinating introspective on the mathematical progression of a single ripple of water initially created by a tiny pebble (in this case the Japanese beetle) and the vast impact it will have on the planet. And a wonderful signed manuscript by ""the most versatile man in America"""
