OLMSTED, FREDERICK LAW, JR AND THEODORA KIMBALL
New York: George Putnam’s Sons, 1922 & 1928. First Editions. Exceptionally important association copies. The first volume is inscribed “C. Bowyer Vaux from [printed calling card: “Mr,. Frederick Law Olmsted. Brookline, Mass.”] Philadelphia. December 13th 1922.” Vaux was the son of Calvert Vaux, who brought in the elder Olmsted to plan what was to be their most famed and celebrated effort, New York’s Central Park. The elder Vaux and Olmsted, Sr. passed away well before this volume was issued (Vaux drowned while visiting this son in Brooklyn). Offsetting from a previously laid in newspaper clipping on the front endpaper; clippings pasted inside the back cover; about fine in a split and chipped dust jacket. The preface notes the this volume’s commemoration of the centenary of Olmsted’s birth, describing his historic partnership with Vaux. The second volume is inscribed by Olmsted, “To George Haven Putnam in appreciation alike of old friendships and of his constant helpfulness in the preparation of this book. Frederick Law Olmsted.” Putnam had already retired from heading the family firm at the date of this volume’s issuance, but clearly was involved with these publications. Very good in dust jacket. The younger Olmsted took over his father’s firm, becoming a successful architect himself. The family home, offices and archive in Brookline are well-preserved, operating as a National Historic Site.

CHAPLIN, Charlie
New York & London: Harper & Brothers, (1922). First Edition. Hardcover. The pictorial boards for this book are almost always quite worn and the dust jacket hardly ever present. This copy is quite decent with minor rubbing to the front cover with old staining to the rear cover. The spine and the front free endpaper have been expertly replaced and look exactly like the original. Very Good, lacking the uncommon dustwrapper. A very early, if not first, printing with no date on the title page and the code "B-W" on the copyright page indicating publication in February 1922. Chaplin's account of what Europe did to the world's most popular movie actor, illustrated with photographs. This copy bears a scarce SIGNED INSCRIPTION by the author on the recto of the frontispiece photograph: "To my dear old pal/Billy. Hoping you will/have a little fun/browsing through this/Charlie Chaplin/Feb. 24th 1922." Books signed by Chaplin, especially of such an early date when he was at the height of his popularity, are quite scarce. We have handled only one other signed copy of this book in over twenty years and it was inscribed in June, 1922.[Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

HOUSMAN, A. E.
Grant Richards Ltd, London, 1922. Small 8vo, original cloth, t.e.g., dust jacket. Scattered foxing, otherwise a very good copy in dust jacket, in a cloth slipcase. Bookplate of poet and Housman scholar William Vincent Sieller on the front free-endpaper. Scattered foxing, otherwise a very good copy in dust jacket, in a cloth slipcase. Bookplate of poet and Housman scholar William Vincent Sieller on the front free-endpaper First edition. One of 4000 copies printed. Carter, Sparrow and White 5. Signed by Housman on the half-title page. Housman himself regarded Last Poems as a final tribute to his beloved friend, Moses Jackson, and although some of the poems were written as early as 1896, Housman wrote most of the poems in this volume in a desperate burst of creativity after learning that Jackson was dying of stomach cancer in 1922. Last Poems could also be considered Housman's volume of war poems, containing as it does his bitter "Epitaph On An Army Of Mercenaries": "These, in the day when heaven was falling, / The hour when earth's foundations fled, / Followed their mercenary calling / And took their wages and are dead. / Their shoulders held the sky suspended; / They stood, and earth's foundations stay; / What God abandoned, these defended, / And saved the sum of things for pay". Housman was fastidious about punctuation & was annoyed by the omission of punctuation marks in the first two lines of the poem on p. 52. However, when the publisher offered to insert an errata slip in the remaining copies, Housman replied: "No, don't put in an errata slip. The blunder will probably … [Click Below for Full Description]

BATAILLE (Georges).
[Click Below for Full Description]

manuscript; scrapbook]
c. 1922. Published by Thomas Y. Crowell and Company in 1907, with a verse for every day facing a blank page for personal contributions, and including a frontispiece portrait of Tennyson. Green cloth, stamped in gilt on upper board and spine; approx. pp. 200, printed verse, with facing pages full of handwritten entries and original photographs and artwork by numerous contributors, as well as tipped-in illustrations and ephemera. Boards scuffed; spine sunned; binding shaken, likely due to the copious tipped-in material, and from being passed amongst so many contributors. (This was clearly a much-loved volume.) Our compiler is presumably Miss Elvira Reina, whose name appears on the front paste-down, alongside a small Valentine card, reading "This may not go down in history" on the front cover. Miss Reina would likely be surprised to find that her book is still of interest nearly 100 years later, but the wealth of original material makes it a little gem. Rich with photographs (usually small, about 3-by-5 inches or less, in b/w and sepia, a few with hand-colored details), offering a wonderful look at the fashions of the period, and including an image of a car (with 4 Gatsby-esque gents in it) and an image of a young woman in a kitchen. The volume maintains a youthful lightness, as most of the photographs feature young men, young women, and children, and many of the contributions come from Miss Reina's sisters, Adeline and Ada Agnes, who include witty ditties about fashion. The portrait of Miss Reina's mother and the volume's dedication to her lend some temperance, with floral mo … [Click Below for Full Description]
