Leons Paegle / Niklavs Strunke cover design
Daile un Darbs, Riga 1922 - Latvian language. Octavo 12 x 18 cm. Weight 50 gr. Wrappers, 72 pp. Good condition without losses, remarks or stains. Wrappers are creased with lightly frayed edges, but not damaged; restored title page (pasted triangle piece on the bottom corner), traces of use and time are present. Present play refers to author's best period of literary work 1921-1926. This was the first writing published on Latvian language, which describes beginning of the Revolution on the front line, start of the heroic way of Latvian shooters. Books's author Leons Paegle (1890-1926) was Latvian writer, member of the Communist Party of Latvia. His collections of poems served the cause of the struggle for liberation waged by the Latvian working class; prose works depicted the life of the Latvian village; his dramas attacked bourgeois life. Paegle's works are intense and dramatic, expressionist, with clear composition, steeped in energy of class struggle and communist enthusiasm. Book cover is decorated by great original modernist lithograph, the work of Niklavs Strunke (1894–1966) - painter, graphic artist, book illustrator, stage decorator, one of the most outstanding representatives of the 20th century Latvian avant-garde. John Wisden
1922. Hi, This lot is a 1922 Original Hardback Wisden in OK Condition, 1922s do not come in very good very often and there are nicer condition 1922s out there but this one is special as it is a presentation Wisden, it is signed by the Editor Sydney H Pardon to Caine (future editor) on the title page. So condition, first off the gilt is bright to front and spine , the boards however are dark and marked and there is a lot of wear between the spine cloth and the front/back boards. Inside the hinges are strong but some yellow coming away to the front hinge. A bit grubby inside but not too bad. Great Photoplate. Sticker to first page.

Zamiatin, Evgenii (Zamyatin, Zamjatin, 1884-1937)
Berlin: Knigoizdatel'stvo, 1922. Octavo (19.5 × 14.5 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Aleksandr Arnshtam; 58, [2] pp. About very good; occasional light soil to corners; rear wrapper somewhat creased. First edition of Russian modernist and dystopian writer Evgenii Zamyatin's play, which is set in sixteenth-century Spain during the Inquisition. Zamyatin returned to Russia shortly before the October Revolution after working abroad for many years, and he wrote numerous short stories during the following years, as well as teaching courses on Russian literature. By the early 1920s he was one of the most well-known but also controversial writers. The present work, Zamyatin's only play, was recognized by contemporaries as an allegory of the Soviet Cheka, or secret police. A short preface to the work notes that "Those who were convinced of their infallibility decided to drive all who disobeyed into their paradise by means of weapons and bonfires." Completed in 1920, the work was first published in 1922 by the Berlin émigré publishing house "Slovo" ("The Word"). A number of reviews took note of its anti-Soviet pathos and helped set off the long-running campaign against Zamyatin, who only left the Soviet Union in 1931, after personally petitioning Stalin for permission. With attractive drawn wrappers by Alexander Arnstam, a noted artist and graphic designer who had left Russia for Berlin in 1921. Savine 04597.

Bly, Oregon, 1922. Photograph Album. Very Good. The album measures 7" x 11" and contains over 40 photographs, real photo postcards, tickets, and tags, most documenting the Lakeview Roundup held in 1922. The photographs range in size from 1" x 1.5" to 3" x 5". The album shows some wear and two of the leaves are partially detached; contents are in good shape with most glued to the pages. The Lakeview Roundup, a community organized event organized by rancher S. P. Dicks that still continues today as the Lake City Rodeo, was first held in 1920 at the beginning of rodeo's heyday when cowboy competitions consistently sold out large venues in New York, Boston, London, and other major cities. The Lakeview Roundup was exceptionally popular and consistently drew thousands of people to the tiny town of Bly (population of less than 100) during its earliest years. The album includes photographs and photo-cards showing a teenage girls club slumber party at the Dicks Ranch apparently held at the time of the rodeo, a group shot of all the rodeo contestants, individual events, the rodeo parade, Governor Olcott in a car full of cowboys, and Loring "Boss" Richardson (the greatest of the early Lakeview champions) in a bareback bronc riding event. It also includes a rodeo booster tag and 10-cent-a-dance tickets for the outside dance floor.

Brought up on the old Waipa frontier soon after the close of the wars, when an uneasy peace existed between European and Maori, he imbibed much ancient lore as well as recent history from old-time Maori chiefs and warriors, and from them as well as from the European settlers he gathered many a tale of heroism and endurance." - from the dust-jacket blurb of a later edition. .

Stalin (Dzhugashvili), Josef.
Tiflis, Izd-vo Zakkraikoma RKP, 1922. 8vo. (4), 127, (1) pp. Original printed wrappers. The first edition of Stalin's second book; extremely rare. It is widely known that Stalin's role in the party during pre-Revolutionary times was mostly practical: assigned to supply money for the cause by way of expropriations, he became a well-known figure around 1905, and later, during the Civil War, a commander of the Red Army and a party leader. Very little was known of Stalin's political views before Lenin's death in 1924. While Stalin was always regarded as the loyal executor, unlike all other key Bolshevist figures he had not published any significant works - merely occasional articles in which he did not give away a clear position. Stalin became the People's Commissar for the nationalities in 1917 when the position was created. The committee survived until 1924, when the USSR was formed. The present book should be regarded as a collection of his essays on the subject of the national question. One of the principal ideas here advanced by Stalin was that the marginal areas of the Russian Empire should not be separated. He argues that all nations should join in the fight for the world revolution while the colonies of the British Empire ought to be liberated. On this point he contradicts Lenin, who at that time was prepared to grant sovereignty to some nations such as Finland. It is worth noting the author's name on the title page: Stalin used various worknames within and outside the party, largely due to the illicit nature of his pre-revolutionary activity (research has found him to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Milton, John. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator).
4to. London: Heinemann, [1922]. 4to, xvii, 76 pp. With 24 tipped in titled tissue-guarded color plates and numerous other monochrome illustrations, some full page. Original beige boards stamped in gilt on the upper cover, vellum backstrip lettered in gilt, a bit soiled and dull but fine internally. De luxe edition #389 of an edition limited to 550 copies signed by Rackham. An unusual book for Rackham, but one in which he explored the beauty of sensuality in an enchanted realm (omitting some of Milton's uglier conceits) and gave the poem a new and rather delightful tone.
