Leipzig (Krause), 1922. Gr. 8°. 48 S. mit zahlr. fotografischen Ansichten. ill. OKart von Schumann. Ecke minimal bestoßen, sonst tadellos. sehr seltene EA. WEBER, Max.
Tübingen: J. C. B. Mohr (Paul Siebeck), 1922. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Spine rolled and rear board slightly bowed, foot of spine bumped, hinges cracked but firm, contents evenly browned, otherwise a very good copy. Small piece of annotated note paper laid-in. First edition, first impression, of the German sociologist and political economist's collected writings on the methodology of social sciences, published posthumously by his widow Marianne. "Arguably the foremost social theorist of the twentieth century, Max Weber is known as a principal architect of modern social science along with Karl Marx and Emil Durkheim. Weber's wide-ranging contributions gave critical impetus to the birth of new academic disciplines such as sociology and public administration as well as to the significant reorientation in law, economics, political science, and religious studies. His methodological writings were instrumental in establishing the self-identity of modern social science as a distinct field of inquiry; he is still claimed as the source of inspiration by empirical positivists and their hermeneutic detractors alike" (SEP). Joyce, James
Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. 1st edition, 1st issue of 750 copies (the first ones on Feb. 2nd), before the 100 on Dutch paper (Feb. 13th) and the 150 on large paper (Mar. 4th). Original printed paper wrappers, rebacked, one corner, one edge flap, and 5 blank page corners repaired, rear endpaper restored, little chips along the edges, else good condition, complete, and we're being precise, and other depictions are suspiciously vague. 1st editions of Ulysses for what we're asking are gone. The cheapest equivalents start at twice our price and go up from there, and the only thing 4 generations of "1st thus" reprints share in common is declining demand, but a new generation of readers is on the rise. They've heard it's the supreme modernist novel and industrial strength psychological realism, and they're told it was condemned as scandalous erotica, in the days when safe sex meant a padded headboard, and they've read it was stoutly suppressed by authorities fearful of any novel portraying chastity as an unlit lamp, or adult abstinence as malnutrition. But millennials don't care what squares thought about sex 95 years ago, or that from the 1940s to the 1970s Ulysses' meaning was mused upon as a cypher in some language twins teach each other. They just face it as a long and arduous 732 page, 265,000 word legacy, a test of focus, set in turn of the century Dublin, and only worth the effort because it recaptures life in a signally fascinating time and place. So the motivation for reading Ulysses has been protean in each generation, but i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zavadovskii, Prof. Mikhail Mikhailovich (1891-1957)
Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, Moscow 1922 - Large octavo (25.5 × 17 cm). Original printed boards; 255 pp. With 20 colored plates and 126 illustrations throughout the text. Presentation copy, inscribed by Zavadovsky to Prof. Dr. Brandes on the ffep: "An vielverehrten Herrn Prof. Dr. Brandes, M. Zavadovsky, Russland, Moscau Universität, Zoologisches Museum." Corners and edges lightly scuffed; rear board lightly soiled; with pencil annotations, most likely by Brandes; else very good. First Edition of this study of sexual characteristics, based on a long series of experiments in chickens and other animals (both domestic and laboratory). Zavadovsky employed castration and transplantation of sex glands, concluding "that some of the secondary sexual characteristics depend on their development in the hormones of the sex glands and that some are independent of it. Zavadovsky investigated the interrelationships between secondary sexual characteristics and the sex glands and studied the interaction of the endocrine glands. He concluded that a ± mutual influence exists: an organ that stimulates another also is inhibited by it. This was an important application to biology of the cybernetic principle of positive or negative feedback" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). This copy was presented to Prof. Gustav Brandes (1862-1941), a prominent German zoologist active in Halle and Dresden. One of 3000 copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Eliot, T. S.
London: Criterion, 1922. First Edition. 1st appearance anywhere, in any form, of the iconic modernist poem, preceding all others, in The Criterion (Vol. I, no. I), a quarterly Literary magazine founded and edited by Eliot himself, primarily for the purpose of publishing The Waste Land. Original 2 color printed wrappers, a small skinned patch, frayed at the overlapping edges, light foxing, a little dusty, but still very good, nice for this book. Something of an association copy. Ex-Ruth Wadsworth Porter (her signature on the cover), the wife of James Foster Porter, and mother of Fairfield and Eliot Porter, T. S. Eliot's (2nd?) cousins, so it's not irrational (considering the relation) to propose that our copy of The Criterion may have been a gift from T.S. Eliot himself. Or not. The Waste Land first appeared in this periodical in early October, but follow the progressive history as it unfolded. The second appearance (the first in the U. S.) was in the Nov. 1922 issue of The Dial magazine (actually issued later in Oct.). In Dec. 1922, The Waste Land was first published as a book (in New York) by Boni and Liveright (1,000 copies), adding the author's notes, and as part of their agreement, The Dial bought 350 copies of Boni and Liveright's book, being 70% of the copies that have long been singled out as the book's 1st binding and 1st issue (calculated as 500 by their numbering). And then, in Sept. 1923, along came the first U. K. book edition (The Hogarth Press, 450 copies). Now forget all that. Our Criterion is the original, The Waste Land's first glimpse of the light, a genes … [Click Below for Full Description]

RR. PP. Antonin Jaussen et Raphaël Savignac
Paris: Ernest Leroux; Librairie Paul Geuthner, 1922. First edition. Hardcover. f to vg. Complete set of "Mission Archéologique en Arabie," Fathers Jaussen and Savignac's pioneering archaeological expedition to northern Arabia: After a little over a century, Fathers Jaussen and Savignac's pioneering archaeological expedition to northern Arabia remains a scholarly landmark. The six books in three volumes by Father Raphael Savignac (1874-1951) and Father Antonin Jaussen (1871-1962) were published between 1909 and 1922. They are the result of their missions undertaken in 1907, 1909 and 1910. The first two volumes relate the authors' expedition from Jerusalem to Madâ'in Sâlih and al-'Ulâ. They are mostly devoted to their travel story, archaeological excavations and epigraphy. The supplement to Volume II contains ethnological notes taken during the second expedition in 1909. These notes concern Fuqara', a nomadic group from Northwest Arabia (around Madâ'in Sâlih and al-'Ulâ). The third book was to be published together with the previous two, but the outbreak of WWI made the sending of the manuscript to France difficult, which explains the delay in publication. In the last volume the authors provide the first photographs of the castles of Qusayr 'Amra, Qasr Tûba and Qasr Kharâna, which were visited during the three expeditions. These sites had already been visited and studied by A. Musil in 1907, but Jaussen and Savignac add a lot more important information, as well as new accurate plans. - Tome I : De J&ea … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Rivoluzione Liberale]
Rara ollezione completa a fascicoli sciolti.
