Ives, Charles
Redding, CT: C.E. Ives, 1922. Condition: Very Good in tan paper-covered boards, with a brown quarter-binding, moderately worn at the corners, brief spotting to the front board, and a touch of wear to the paper spine label, firm and clean overall. First Edition. A self-published volume of songs by Charles Ives, selected from a volume published earlier the same year, titled "114 Songs." Like "114 Songs," this was printed for distribution among the composer's friends, and judging from the small number of copies in world libraries (OCLC locates 12 libraries with copies, whereas 106 are listed with copies of "114 Songs"), it must surely have had a much smaller printing. A selection of "folk songs" by Ives, many dedicated to the work of literary greats of the generation that preceded him (Shelley, Wordsworth, Goethe, Longfellow). Characteristically, simple melody lines are played against a complex and sometimes argumentative accompaniment. Contemporary owner name in fountain pen at the top right corner of the front board and the front endpaper. [Attributes: First Edition]

Ives, Charles E
Redding, CT: Charles Ives, 1922. Condition: Fine condition. First Edition. Second issue, in publisher's blue cloth with titles and rule in gilt on the front board and spine, and with pages 37-39 printed, and no dust jacket as issued. A collection of avant-garde short pieces in every imaginable format (marches, violin sonatas, group sing-a-longs, etc.) written by Ives using the poetry of Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Wordsworth, Keats, James Fenimore Cooper, and others as lyrics. Notable as much for musical content as for the long essay by Ives at the rear regarding his typically involved conceptual intentions for this particular gathering of compositions. An eccentric publication by one of our greatest and certainly most eccentric twentieth century composers. [Attributes: First Edition]

Douglas, Norman
1922. Condition: Good. SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Original full dark blue cloth with gilt ruled border and cross both boards. Minor chipping to head and foot of spine. Overall light wear with all corners are bumped and rubbed. Blue endsheets with previous owner's bookplate. Endsheet is split at gutter and there is slight age-toning to the endsheets. All pages are on blue paper with black ink. Signed by Norman Douglas. Numer 25 of 150 large-paper copies. GOOD condition. George Norman Douglas (December 8, 1868 - February 7, 1952) was a British writer, now best known for his 1917 novel South Wind. In the 1920s, perhaps piqued by D. H. Lawrence's success with Lady Chatterley, Norman Douglas published Some Limericks, an anthology of more-or-less obscene limericks with a mock-scholarly critical apparatus. This classic (of its kind) has been frequently republished, often without acknowledgement in pirate editions.

Kandinsky, Wassily, Maler und Graphiker (1866-1944).
Weimar, 13. XII. 1922, Fol. 2 Seiten. [.]". - Nachde … [Click Below for Full Description]

Friedman, Alexander; Einstein, Albert; Scheel, Karl (Editor)
Braunschweig & Berlin, Germany: Friedr. Vieweg & Sohn/Julius Springer, 1922, 1923, 1924. First Edition. In 1922, Russian mathematician Alexander Alexandrovich Friedmann [or Friedman] (1888-1925) developed solutions to Einstein's general relativity field equations under the simplifying (but realistic) assumption that the universe is "homogeneous and isotropic," meaning that at large scales, the universe looks the same from every location (homogeneous) and in every direction (isotropic). Friedmann found that his solutions depended on just two parameters: Omega, the average density of matter and energy in the universe, and Lambda, the vacuum energy associated with empty space (the cosmological constant). By varying these parameters, Friedmann was able to create models of the universe that expanded, collapsed or was stable. These papers include (1) Friedmann's three solutions; (2-3) Two notes from Einstein, first doubting the result and then conceding its correctness; (4) A further paper by Friedmann on the topic of the curvature of space. The articles are as follows: "Über die Krümmung des Raumes" ("On the Curvature of Space") by Alexander Friedmann (Zeitschrift für Physik 10, pp. 377-386, 1922); and "Bemerkung zu der Arbeit von A. Friedmann 'Über die Krümmung des Raumes'" ("Comment on the work of A. Friedmann 'On the curvature of space'") by Albert Einstein (Zeitschrift für Physik 11 p. 326, 1922); and "Notiz du der Arbeit von A. s.a., [Granada, 1922. 1ª edición. 15.6x21. J. M. Dent, London, 1922. Six octavo volumes now bound in full smooth calf by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. This set appears to have been specially bound for The J. W. Robinson Company of Los Angeles. Their name appears next to the Sangorski & Sutcliffe statement at the front free endpaper. At the rear of each volume is affixed a tipped-in price sticker bearing the Robinson Company Logo. The original price for the six volume set was $100.00, which for 1922 was very expensive. This set also comes with its original box, covered in marbled paper with a pull-out tray. Each volume is signed by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Marbled endpapers and inner dentelles add to the deluxe design. The calf boards are a bright green while the spines are now light brown. The spines have six compartments each with two being red labels indicating author and title. The date of 1922 is at the foot of all the spines in gilt. There is bound into each volume a slender silk page marker. Each volume is enhanced by the beautiful full-page illustrations of Edmund Dulac, for a total of 60. The frontispiece illustrations are protected with a tissue guard. There is some foxing to the fore-edge in all six volumes, much less to the bottom edge. The top edge is gilt. All volumes are tight, bright, and very solid. This is a great set for the Bronte lover. Near Fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

SMITH, Clark Ashton
Auburn, Ca: The Auburn Journal, 1922. First Edition. First Edition. Octavo, publisher's original dark maroon cloth titled in gilt on front panel. 152 pp. THE AUTHOR'S PERSONAL COPY - Copy No. 1 of 500 numbered & Signed copies. This copy, being Smith's own, was heavily corrected and rewritten by him over the years - there are about 50 corrections, strikethroughs and additions, in some case single lines being rewritten; there are a couple of instances of entirely new stanzas being added. Most of the corrections worked their way into later published versions of the poems, such as in Smith's SELECTED POEMS (1971). Inner hinges cracked (common with this book), large dampstain affecting the lower half of the final 30 pages of text; tears to cloth along outer front hinge and wear at corners and spine ends. A good copy only. Smith lived in a remote cabin in the Sierras with no electricity and with wood heat, the condition is as could be expected - Smith *used* his books, and he used this one quite heavily. The best copy in the world, now housed in a beautiful white quarter-leather case designed & built by the noted bookbinder, Gray Parrot. The most important copy extant of the best early collection of Smith's poems, including the first appearance in print of THE HASHISH-EATER; Or, THE APOCALPSE OF EVIL, and twenty of his evocative and memorable prose-poems, including IN COCKAIGNE and FROM THE CRYPTS OF MEMORY.

Lethbridge, T C
T C Lethbridge. Lethbridge was Keeper of Anglo-Saxon Antiquities at the Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology from 1922-1956. A renaissance man, he witnessed and recorded the 20th century, from the discovery of new lands during his Arctic adventures, through to his pragmatic investigations into occult phenomena. Chicago, Printed for the Author. 1922, 1st Edition. First edition of Achad's most important book. Ex-Libris Aleister Crowley. Extraordinary Presentation Copy Inscribed By Frater Achad: "To my Beloved Father / 666 / in the hope that this, my / first book, may meet with / his approval / 777". 8vo. 106 pp + 43pp. + 4 colour plates (including frontispiece) + 1 folded black & white diagram. Limited Edition: #2 of 250 signed copies. THE MOST IMPORTANT POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION COPY. Black paper-covered boards, linen spine, paper title label, top edge gilt. Label slightly chipped, some wear to corners and edges of boards. Light damping along top margin of first few leaves and a couple of inconsequential nicks. Interesting bookplate of Phyllis Duveen. A very good & important copy. Aleister Crowley ("666") considered himself to be the "Spiritual Father" to Frater Achad (Charles Stansfeld Jones, "777"), as he relates on page 801 of the CONFESSIONS: "What I had really done .. was to beget a Magical Son. So, precisely nine months afterwards .. Frater O.I.V. entirely without my k now ledge, became a Babe of the Abyss.. The Book of the Law speaks of this 'Child' as 'One,' as if with absolute vagueness. But the motto which Frater O.I.V. had taken on becoming a neophyte was 'Achad,' which is the Hebrew word for 'One.' It is further predicted that this 'Child' shall discover the Key of the interpretation of the Book itself, and this I had been unable to do." In this light, Achad refers to Aleister Crowley as his "Beloved Father" in the INSCRIBED DEDICATION. This is copy # 2 of 250; we presume th … [Click Below for Full Description]

He served as a member of the Russian delegation leading up to the Treaty of Portsmouth in 1905, and later represented Russia in Beijing and as head of the diplomatic mission in Ulan-Batoor, Mongolia, as well as Persia in 1915. FISH, Anne Harriet.) FITZGERALD, Edward.
New York: E. P. Dutton & Company, 1922. Quarto. Original black quarter cloth, spine lettered and blocked in gilt, patterned paper sides, orange decorative endpapers, top edge trimmed, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Jacket spine slightly toned and chipped at extremities, repaired short closed-tear at head of front panel, slight bumping to spine ends of binding, small white mark to top edge, a few very minor finger-soiling marks. A particularly nice copy in the dust jacket. Frontispiece, 18 tissue-guarded plates and half-title design by Fish, printed in gold and colours, title page and decorative initials printed in orange and black. First US edition of the Annie Fish Rubáiyát, the UK edition was published the same year; copies with the dust jacket are decidedly scarce. Anne Harriet Fish (1890-1914) was one of the wittiest and most trenchant cartoonist-illustrators of the 20s. She studied under John Hassall, at the London School of Art and in Paris. Her greatest vogue was in the 20s and 30s when she was a staple of Tatler, Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar and American Vanity Fair, where she most notably illustrated advice on social climbing by Dorothy Parker. The Dutch illustrator and writer Cornelis Veth considered her "one of the most important social satirists of the day. He wrote that she depicted modern society with modern boldness. Today her economical and polished designs come across as amusingly sharp, satirical commentaries on the flapper lifestyle" (cited in Peppin & Mickelthwait). This is a transmuted here into a captivating Jazz Age Rubáiyát, "a sumptuous ed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fitzgerald, F. Scott (Holograph Letter signed)
1922. This handwritten letter is one page written in soft, dark pencil on a piece of newsprint when Scott and Tom Boyd were colleagues on the St. Paul Daily News. In addition to being a book reviewer, Boyd also had a bookshop, Kilmarnock Books. Dimensions; 7" x 6.5". Signed boldly by "F. Scott Fitzgerald." Detailed letter of provenance available.Dear Boyd, It seems to me that that was a rather ill-advised interview Sunday. Should it come to the attention of the Metropolitan it is apparent that all friendly relations between Hovey and myself should (crossed out) would cease. I thought you understood that a popular magazine reserves the rights to make changes--you see it would be bad business for me to criticize them publicly for making changes that they have bought the right to make.I trust that clause of it won’t appear elsewhere. Sincerely,B. FScott Fitzgerald After serving in World War I as a Marine, Boyd received the Croix de Guerre and wrote his magnum opus, Through the Wheat. Thomas Boyd married Margaret Smith and they settled in Saint Paul. There he worked as a journalist at The St. Paul Daily News and ran Kilmarnock Books, where he entertained the likes of Aldous Huxley, Sinclair Lewis, Edna Ferber, Theodore Dreiser, and other literary luminaries, interviewing them and writing reviews of their current novels. Boyd and Fitzgerald were close friends for a time, and Fitzgerald took Boyd’s manuscript of Through the Wheat to Max Perkins and urged its publication. Fitzgerald also wrote a glowing review of the novel upon its publication. The Boyds achieved enough success to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Los Angeles, circa 1950s."The north end of La Cienega Boulevard was the center of the Los Angeles art world from the 1950s to the 1980s, as famously documented in the Getty's Pacific Standard Time 1945-80 initiative. Most people know about Ferus Gallery, founded by artist Edward Kienholz and curator Walter Hopps in a small space behind an antiques shop that went on to show luminaries such as Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston, Robert Irwin, Ed Moses, Wallace Berman and Ed Kienholz from 1957 to 1966. But what most people likely remember is the year 1962, when Irving Blum, having become Ferus' director at the time, gave Andy Warhol his first L.A. show -- in fact his first commercial gallery show anywhere exhibiting his now iconic Soup Cans. Heritage Gallery, owned by Ben Horowitz, showed Charles White and Ernie Barnes -- besides Ankrum and Hunsaker/Schlesinger galleries, was basically was the only place on the block showing work by African Americans. Felix Landau opened his space in 1951 and showed European icons like Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and Francis Bacon, bringing many of them to L.A. for the first time." [Attributes: Signed Copy]
