LEWIS, John:
Adelaide, W.K. Thomas and Co., 'The Register' Office, 1922. Octavo, xviii, 243 pages plus 25 plates and a folding map. Black-decorated gilt-lettered purple cloth slightly marked, with the spine lightly sunned; endpapers offset (the front flyleaf is in fact the half-title); a very bright and crisp copy of a book more often than not found worse for use. Inscribed on the half-title to Mr Evan Kyffin Thomas (possibly in a secretarial hand) and signed by the author (who died on 25 August 1923). The Honorable John Lewis (1844-1923), 'Explorer, bushman, drover, roughrider, pastoralist, businessman, legislator'; his autobiography contains much on the Northern Territory in the 1860s-70s. His father James accompanied Charles Sturt in 1844-45; one of his sons was the industrialist Essington Lewis. The recipient in this instance was no slouch either: Evan Kyffin Thomas (1866-1935), a South Australian journalist and newspaper proprietor (being part-owner of 'The Register'), was the great-nephew of Robert Thomas, South Australia's first printer (Australian Dictionary of Biography). Ernest Shackleton, on his British Antarctic Expedition (BAE), 1907-09, named Mt Kyffin after Evan Kyffin Thomas. It is a distinctive reddish-brown mountain of 1670 metres, with a sloping spur extending four miles to the north, at the extreme northern end of the Commonwealth Range, projecting into the eastern side of Beardmore Glacier and rising precipitously above it.

HOPPÉ, E[mil]. O[tto]. and KING, Richard.
Jonathan Cape. London 4to. LIMITED EDITION OF 560 COPIES 500 COPIES FOR SALE this is no. 49. pp. 27, (i). 32 photogravure images [one with added colour], each with a text leaf. Original cloth-backed decorated paper boards, now dusty, paper labels on spine and front cover, a touch of wear to spine ends and corners, of the 32 plates, 17 have fold creases to the lower inner corners [because the plates are tipped-in at the top edge and careless closing of the pages cause the floating corners to catch and fold], occasional very small marginal tear to the lower edge, some foxing at the ends and some marginal dust marks, despite all of which, the images remain dark and opulent and worthy of Hoppé's pre-eminence as the best portrait photographer of his day. With a signed inscription to MABEL FARMBOROUGH, Christmas 1922, from CHARLES BASS, Vicar of Steeple Claydon - 'A slight acknowledgement of much helpfulness in this and in many former years.' Bass was vicar at Steeple Claydon for 32 years and there is now a stained glass window in dedication to him in the church. *HOPPÉ [1878-1972], born in Munich and educated at the best schools in Munich, Vienna and Paris, he was destined for a career in banking. He moved to London in 1900 to continue his training in finance, working with Deutsche Bank. JORNAL DO BRASIL / LITHOGRAPHICA YPIRANGA.
[Sao Paulo:] Seccao cartográfica da Comp. Litographica Ypiranga, . 1922 - Colour off-set print, dissected into 2 large sections and mounted upon original linen, original folds (Very Good, just some light wear along dissection edges and original folds; and slight fraying to edges of linen), 112.5 x 66.5 cm (44 x 26 inches). This rare and highly attractive wall map of Brazil was commissioned by the Jornal do Brasil, a leading daily newspaper, to commemorate the centenary of the independence of the country (Brazil attained its sovereignty from Portugal in 1822). The map was published in São Paulo by the cartography division of Companiha Litographica Ypiranga, a popular printer of books and ephemera. The map is beautifully designed, showcasing all of Brazil in it majesty. Each of the republic’s 22 divisions (20 states, 1 territory, and 1 Federal District), are defined in their own bright colours, with their new limits according to the 1921 Brazilian Conference on Interstate Boundaries (as explained in the text, lower-left corner). The capital of Brazil was then Rio de Janeiro, with the Federal District comprising of only a tiny (1.164 sq. km) portion of Rio’s old town. Moreover, the map depicts the rectangular ‘Futuro Districto Federal’, carved out of Goiás state, in Central Brazil, being the recently designated future site of Brasilia (which would not become the national capital until 1960). The ‘Convencoes’ table, lower-left, identifies symbols used the designate various levels of major cities and towns (including state capitals); the locations of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard D. Wyckoff
1st Edition (1922). Recenly rebound in black leather with gilt lettering No marks or writing observed in text. Damp stain on front end paper and half title page. This rebound rare title will easily last another 100 years+.a......Richard Wyckoff was a Wall Street legend. Not only did he make a fortune, but he also was the longtime editor and publisher of The Magazine of Wall Street and the developer of successful methods to analyze and forecast the market. In this book, originally published in 1922, Wyckoff lays out his insider's knowledge for everyone, especially those who are willing to study before risking one's own money. After all, he wrote, 'in Wall Street as anywhere else, the chief essential is common sense, coupled with study and practical experience. ' He covers topics such as the six rules he's found helpful, why he adopted Harriman's principle, what he looks for before buying a bond, the earmarks of a desirable investment, the importance of knowing who owns a stock, and how to recognize manipulation in the market.........'Virtually everything written after Livermore and Wyckoff are variations on themes developed by these two men. Wyckoff was among the first to explain the accumulation-distribution cycle (which makes stock and market timing possible) and to develop the use of 'surrogates', self-made indexes which consist of a handful of leading stocks in a group (such as semiconductors), which warn the investor of impending moves, and which enable the investor to filter out all the noise of broadcasters, publishers, newsletters, message boards, and chat rooms. McALMON, Robert (1895-1956)
[Paris: Printed in Dijon by Maurice Darantière for Contact Publishing Co.], [1922]. 8vo. 288pp. Original printed French-folded wrappers, uncut and unopened. A beautiful, fresh copy with only a few areas of palest discoloration along the spine. FIRST EDITION, one of approximately 300 copies privately printed of McAlmon's second book (preceded by a collection of poetry) and the first book issued by his own Contact Publishing Co. McAlmon's privately-printed second book (preceded by a collection of poetry). This copy includes the broadside "From an h'English Printer to an English Publisher" laid-in. The Dijon printer Maurice Darantière printed this book shortly before he completed work on Joyce's Ulysses. McAlmon had assisted Joyce in the typing of the manuscript for that novel, reordering some of the material in the Penelope episode due to difficulties in interpreting Joyce's handwriting. Born in the American Midwest, McAlmon expatriated to Paris where he was closely allied with Joyce, Stein, Hemingway, Williams, and many other Modernists. His publishing company published Hemingway's first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems, among other seminal works of the period. In his memoir, McAlmon recalled that Joyce said these stories reminded him of his own Dubliners and suggested the title A Hasty Bunch "because he found my American use of language racy" (p. 33). The story "A Boy's Discovery" is among McAlmon's more explicit explorations of homosexual themes. .

Barbier, George (artist).
5 issues (complete). Paris: Meynial, 1922-26. 5 issues (complete). 8vo, each issue with color vignette to title and 12 color pochoir plates (60 in total), introductory text by the Comtesse de Noailles to 1922, Colette to 1923, Cécile Sorel 1924, Gérard d’Houville 1925, and Baronne de Brimont 1926. Original pictorial wrappers by Barbier, text and plates bound in to matching quarter morocco bindings in red, blue, grey, green (faded) and brown, gilt decorated backstrips, all slightly dusty but very good. Backstrips stamped D.& Co. at foot and each volume with a bookplate “D et C 1805”. A complete set of this extraordinary series of fashion plates in superb art deco illustrations. Falbalas et Fanfreluches was the last of Barbier's books to reflect contemporary life. Its special value lies in the unique way in which it catches the tone and mood of the gilded age, the swinging twenties. “George Barbier (1882-1932) was at the forefront of the Art Deco movement, and his images have become icons of an era of unsurpassed glamour, elegance and decadence. His Falbalas et Fanfreluches (1922-1926) graphically display the artist's intense interest in fashion, both of his and earlier ages, as well as his sharp sense of humour: an image of three pearl-draped vamps before a man nervously clutching an apple is titled "Le Jugement de Paris" (Sotheby’s, 2008, £5250). Gaudriault p.115.
