Kafka, Franz, writer (1883–1924).
Prague, December, 1922. 8vo. 3? pp. A deeply personal, eloquently critical letter to his friend Franz Werfel (1890?1945), who had just visited him. Written in German from his sickbed, the letter, which was probably never sent, contains a discussion Werfel?s play Schweiger, which had been a severe disappointment to Kafka: ?Dear Werfel, After the way I behaved at your last visit, you could not come again. I realized that. And I would surely have written to you before this were it not that letter-writing has gradually become as hard for me as talking, and that even mailing letters is troublesome, for I already had a letter all written for you. But it is useless to go over old things. Where would it end, if one were never to stop defending all one?s old wretched mistakes and apologizing for them. So let me only say this, Werfel, which you yourself must know: If what was involved here was only an ordinary dislike, then it might possibly have been easier to formulate and moreover might have been so unimportant that I might well have been able to keep it to myself. But it was a horror, and justifying that is difficult: One seems stubborn and tough and crossgrained, where one is only unhappy. You are surely one of the leaders of this generation, which is not meant as flattery and cannot serve as flattery of anyone, for many a man can lead this society, so lost in its bogs. Hence you are not only a leader but something more (you yourself have said something similar in the fine introduction to Brand?s posthumous works, fine right down to the phrase ?joyous will to deception?) and on … [Click Below for Full Description]

PHILBY Harry St. John Bridger
1922. First edition. 2 volumes. Illustrated with 48 plates and a plan of Riyadh, 2 folding maps in rear of 2nd vol (these being the routes between Riyadh and Wadi Dawasir & the route from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea). 8vo. Near fine in the original green cloth. xiv, 386; viii, 354pp. London, Constable and Company Ltd, A fascinating account of travel in Central Arabia, undertaken by a British Officer who visited Riyadh and later became an adviser to Ibn Saud. Philby made the second crossing of the Empty Quarter, departing Ojair at the Persian Gulf and arriving at the port of Jidda on the Red Sea. He was preceded only by Bertram Thomas, who took an easier route. This work describes the first part of his journey, ?ending with [his] return to the Wahhabi capital after an excursion in the summer of 1918 to the provinces of Southern Najd.? He entered Riyadh on the 30th of November 1917, tasked with gaining Ibn Saud?s cooperation in the Arab Revolt against the Ottomans. Taking an instant liking to Ibn Saud, Philby came to regard him as a potential post-war leader of the Arab World ? a view that conflicted with the British Government?s backing of the Sharif of Mecca. Chapters III and VII describe his time in the city, including meetings with Ibn Saud and other members of the ruling family. There is also an element of Burton interest in the work. Burton was always suspicious of Palgrave?s account Central and Eastern Arabia (London, 1865) and was distinctly cool towards him when they met. Philby proves here ?beyond any doubt that Palgrave described what he never saw? (Penzer). [A … [Click Below for Full Description]

TWAIN, MARK
New York: Gabriel Wells, 1922. THIRTY-SEVEN VOLUMES UNIFORMLY BOUND. Published 1922-1925. Light blue cloth. Top edges gilt. Spines are in six panels, with gilt borders and lettering, central inlaid dark red leather quadrifoil designs in four of the panels on each volume. Frontispiece illustrations in each volume with captioned tissue-guards. Additional illustrations in all volumes with captioned tissue-guards. This is #436/1024 sets of this limited edition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on a front preliminary page with adjacent page stating that the fly-leaf was signed by Mark Twain in 1906 in anticipation of the present definitive edition of his work, and signed by Albert Bigelow Paine. Paine was Twain's biographer. The author died before the edition was published. Thought by many to be the best edition of Twain's work, this set is lovely. Five of the volumes show evidence of old water-staining, four of them quite minor. Volume 2 show a faint waterline at top 1/2" of the paper, not approaching the illustrations. Volume 3 shows faint waterline a very top of last half of the book. Volume 4 shows same faint line at joint first half of the book. Volume 5 has a waterline at joint extending down about 1 1/2" not affecting the plate.. Volume 25 has a waterline extending down a bit farther and affecting one plate. There is NO paper damage, all pages are pliant and supple, easily turned. There is NO evidence of the water-stain on the bindings. These minor defects are not at all distracting from the beauty of the set. BAL 3691. See photos. Postage will be extra due to the number of volumes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1922. Chelsea:: Ashendene Press,, 1922. First Edition, thus. Hardcover. Like New. LIMITED EDITION of 240 copies on paper and 12 copies on vellum, this is one of the paper copies. 8vo. 8 7/8 x 6 1/8 inches. [ii], i-viii, [2], 239, [1] pp. Text printed in red and black, decorative initials in red and blue designed by Graily Hewitt, 53 woodcut illustrations by Charles M. Gere throughout, printer's device on the colophon in red; text clean, unmarked. Original limp vellum, spine titled in gilt, green silk ties; binding square and tight. Fine. The Little Flowers of St. Francis contains excerpts from various of St. Francis' written works, divided into 53 short chapters, illustrating the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The collection became a classic collection of popular legends about Saint Francis and his early companions. Written a century and a half after the death of Francis of Assisi, the text is not regarded as an important primary source for the saint's biography, but it was the most popular account of his life and relates many colorful anecdotes, miracles and pious examples from the life of Francis and his early followers. It is considered a masterpiece of Italian literature and a masterful work of the Middle Ages. Sackville-West, Vita
Privately Printed, 1922. Number '98' of one of only 50 copies printed 'for private circulation'. Heinemann published this signed limited edition of 100 copies on hand-made paper but copies 51-100 were 'for private circulation' and do not mention the publisher's details or publication date. They also differ from the first 50 copies of this edition which 'were for sale' in having coloured decorated boards, a more intimate frontis portrait of Vita Sackville-West and no mention of the publisher's details to the paper label on the spine. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little bumping to the vellum spine ends and a little rubbing and toning to the spine label. Offsetting to the end papers with a little spotting to the text-block with very slight encroachment onto the page edges in places. Light bumping to the corners. The portrait frontis of Vita Sackville-West has been signed by the author in black ink as called for. This copy has been inscribed twice by the author's mother, The Dowager, Victoria Sackville: Firstly, to the front blank end-paper: 'With the very best of good wishes from the author's mother (B.M), Victoria Sackville (Dowager), to dear Miss Le Bosquet, August 1930'. Additionally inscribed on the half-title by the Dowager (under the printed dedication 'The Heir: A love Story, To B.M.'): 'B.M. is the Dowager Lady Sackville who thanks Dear Miss Le Bosquet for all her kindness to " V. Sackville West". May she never lose you'. In this inscription, The Dowager reveals that she is the dedicatee of the book. Ives, Charles E
Redding, CT: 1922. Fine condition. Blue hardcover with gold type, solid binding and spine, slight page yellowing. Charles Ives privately funded the printing of his 114 Songs in 1921, though the first pressing had blank pages 37-39 so it was reissued a year later. The oldest song included, "Slow March," is dated 1888; the rest date from virtually every year up to the time of publication. Some of the songs were newly arranged for voice & piano, or condensed from other sources explicitly for inclusion in the volume during 1920-1921. Ives' initial motivation was solely to be able to hold a book of his own songs in his hands, but in the "Preface" to the 114 Songs, Ives refers to other motivations that had occurred to him in the interim: "(It) was undertaken primarily in order to have a few clear copies that could be sent to friends who have been interested enough to ask for copies of some of the songs. It contains plenty of songs which have not been and will not be asked for." A bit more than half of Ives' known output of 200 songs are represented in this collection. Among the best known items included are "Evening," "Charlie Rutlage," "Ann Street," "Serenity," "The Cage," "The Children's Hour," and "Memories." A few songs are sub-grouped into sets that are related thematically; for example "Old Home Day," "In the Alley," "A Son of a Gambolier," "Down East," and "The Circus Band" are grouped together as "5 Street Songs and Pieces." Stylistically the 114 Songs cover the breadth of Ives' musical terrain, from the endearingly simple to the mind-bogglingly complex; songs such as "Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Willa Cather

Knopf, N.Y. 1922. #44 of 345 copies on Perusia handmade Italian paper , SIGNED by Willa Cather on the limitation page. No Publisher's slipcase. In Willa Cather s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, we meet Claude Wheeler, a young Nebraskan yearning to escape the life that has been preordained for him. Claude is dissatisfied with farming, alienated from his parents, distant from his wife, and searching for something to believe in. When the country enters the First World War, he finally discovers what he s been looking for. Away from home for the first time, Claude finds the course of his life irrevocably altered by newfound friendships and experiences on distant battlefields. One of Ours continues to be a celebratory tribute -- and a grief-stricken remembrance -- of World War I. It is at once a courageous and poignant story of American ideals, an extraordinary character sketch, and a disquieting look at the making of an American soldier. Rare signed collectible.
