Herman Melville
In 1922 Constable and Company produced the first edition of Herman Melville's Collected Works, in a limited edition 16-volume set of which only 750 were printed. This partial set of volumes 1-12 is number 125 of 750. The limitation page of the first volume, Typee, is hand numbered "125." The printing dates range from 1922 to 1923. The cloth boards are blue, some faded into a green color, with embossments on the covers and spine. 8vo with deckled edge. There are minor inventory markings in pencil on the end papers, as well as a personal book plate on the inside cover of each volume. The set comes from the library of B.P. Schulberg, a pioneer in American film production and a film studio executive. His son is Budd Schulberg, an American screenwriter, author of the novel "What Makes Sammy Run?" and the screenplay for "On the Waterfront." In terms of condition, the set has a very mild cigarette scent. The house from which these books came did not smell like cigarette smoke. I believe that the owner smoked occasionally in the library. The bindings are fair and care should be taken in handling them. All pages are holding fine for now. Some hinges are perfectly good, others are cracking or cracked. If you were to complete the set, the other volumes are easy to find, with the exception of Billy Budd, which is famously known to have appeared for the first time in print in this edition, as the manuscript for that book was discovered during publication of this set. If you have any questions please feel free to send me a message. I will make sure that the books are packaged well for wh … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHILDREN'S MAGAZINE - JAPANESE]
1922. [CHILDREN'S MAGAZINE - JAPANESE]. KODOMO NO KUNI Run of 6 issues from Volume One. Numbers 3, 4, 7, 8, 10 & 12. Taishô 11 [1922] Tôkyôsha, Tôkyô. Each bound in wrappers, 25.8 x 18.8 cm. On quality paper, printed in color throughout. Kodomo no Kuni (The Land of Children) was the finest children's magazine of the prewar period in Japan. There were contributions in each heavily illustrated issue by some of the finest illustrators and writers of the time, including Takei Takeo, Murayama Tomoyoshi, and Okamoto Kiichi. Any issues of the magazine have become very difficult to find, and runs practically unheard of. Many issues of the magazine had a section of printed material on flimsy paper laid in at the rear, often with song text. Most here retain them, but a few issues are missing the flimsies, though otherwise complete. The ones Which may be missing the flimsy are numbers 10 and 4, though it is not clear that they ever had one. Overall, all six issues are in remarkably clean condition. A wonderful artifact at the intersection of high art and popular illustration.

John Maynard Keynes
A Revision Of The Treaty : Being A Sequel To The Economic Consequences of Peace, John Maynard Keynes, Macmillan, 1922, First Edition First Impression, Signed Whilst copies of this historically significant volume are uncommon, we are unaware of any signed copies of any of Keynes' works for sale anywhere in the world today and know of only a couple that have come to the market in the last few years. Following the success of Keynes's first work on the question of German reparations, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, The Sunday Times paid Keynes a large sum for five widely syndicated articles on the same subject, which appeared in August and September 1921. This work collects and revises these articles; Keynes had originally proposed to his publisher a revision of Economic Consequences, but was persuaded that circumstances necessitated a new work. A Revision of the Treaty therefore includes an analysis of the diplomatic grappling of the previous years, and questions the legality of France's repeated threats to occupy the Ruhr, which they would carry out the following year. Keynes is unsympathetic to all sides, including the Germans' proposals. The binding is exceptionally straight and tight, the blue boards with gold lettering to the spine have some darkening in line with age and a little rubbing. The endpapers and pages are clean and free from tears and marks. Foxing is limited to the endpapers only. The author's signature has been tipped in to the first blank page. No dust jacket. Will be despatched (fully insured, tracked and signed for) by courier carefully packaged i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ives, Charles E.
Charles Ives, 1922. First Edition. Second issue, in publisher's blue cloth with titles and rule in gilt on the front board and spine, and with pages 37-39 printed, and no dust jacket as issued. Fine condition. A collection of avant-garde short pieces in every imaginable format (marches, violin sonatas, group sing-a-longs, etc.) written by Ives using the poetry of Walt Whitman, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Wordsworth, Keats, James Fenimore Cooper, and others as lyrics. Notable as much for musical content as for the long essay by Ives at the rear regarding his typically involved conceptual intentions for this particular gathering of compositions. An eccentric publication by one of our greatest and certainly most eccentric twentieth century composers. [Attributes: First Edition]
