Lewis Carroll ALICE IN WONDERLAND ill GWYNEDD HUDSON True 1922 1st Printing Lewis Carroll ALICE IN WONDERLAND ill GWYNEDD HUDSON True 1922 1st Printing Click images to enlarge Description Lewis Carroll. Alice in Wonderland. Hodder & Stoughton. 1922. Illustrated by Gwenydd Hudson. First Edition, first printing. Maroon cloth boards with blind-stamped design to front and gilt to front and spine. 12 mounted colored plates on coated paper with tissue guard to each. Numerous orange and black illustrations and headpieces throughout. 4to. This is the true first printing of the Hudson illustrated Alice. First published in 1922 by Hodder in these maroon boards, there was also a limited deluxe edition published by Hodder in 1922 with cream boards. That printing was signed by Hudson, limited to 250 copies, and priced at 42 shillings. This edition, the "Large Cloth Edition" was priced at 15 shillings. The next printing was issued in 1923: under Hodder's "New Golden Series of Colour Books" (at 7/6- net), the Hudson Alice was re-issued in yellow cloth boards. The sheets appear to be the same. A subsequent smaller edition was issued in 1927: housed in blue cloth boards, it was lacked any gilt or images stamped to the boards and its size was smaller (8vo). In 1928 Hodder issued the famous Boots edition, with its blue boards stamped in gilt like the first printing. The Boots edition -- among others -- is very often wrongly identified as the first printing. The first state of the Boots edition edition carried with it the original mistake evident in the true first printing: Carroll's name was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original burgundy cloth, front board and spine blocked in black and gilt, endpapers printed in orange and black. Spine slightly sunned, faint discolouration to rear board, top corners gently bumped. Carroll (Lewis)
Hodder and Stoughton, 1922. FIRST HUDSON EDITION, 47/250 COPIES signed by the illustrator, 12 colour-printed plates laid down with captioned tissue-guards (including frontispiece), included in the collation but not the pagination, text illustrations and headings printed in black and orange, a few very faint spots, pp.[x]+180+[1], 4to, original white cloth, lettered in gilt to upper board and backstrip with decorations in black and gilt to both, some minor dust-soiling to cloth, t.e.g., faint foxing to endpapers, bookplate of Santina Margaret Levey to flyleaf (her ownership inscription to verso of same), very good. The true first edition of these celebrated, and much reissued illustrations; it makes the unfortunate error of mis-spelling the author's name ('Caroll') on the title-page. Santina M. Levey was a curator of and authority on lace and embroidery, culminating in her position as Keeper of Textiles at the V&A for most of the 1980s. A Revision Of The Treaty : Being A Sequel To The Economic Consequences of Peace, John Maynard Keynes, Macmillan, 1922, First Edition First Impression, Signed Whilst copies of this historically significant volume are uncommon, we are unaware of any signed copies of any of Keynes' works for sale anywhere in the world today and know of only a couple that have come to the market in the last few years. Following the success of Keynes's first work on the question of German reparations, The Economic Consequences of the Peace, The Sunday Times paid Keynes a large sum for five widely syndicated articles on the same subject, which appeared in August and September 1921. This work collects and revises these articles; Keynes had originally proposed to his publisher a revision of Economic Consequences, but was persuaded that circumstances necessitated a new work. A Revision of the Treaty therefore includes an analysis of the diplomatic grappling of the previous years, and questions the legality of France's repeated threats to occupy the Ruhr, which they would carry out the following year. Keynes is unsympathetic to all sides, including the Germans' proposals. The binding is exceptionally straight and tight, the blue boards with gold lettering to the spine have some darkening in line with age and a little rubbing. The endpapers and pages are clean and free from tears and marks. Foxing is limited to the endpapers only. The author's signature has been tipped in to the first blank page. No dust jacket. Valéry Paul, Siméon Fernand
Corrard Pierre. UN ÉTAT PARFAIT. UNE PROVENANCE EXCEPTIONNELLE. UN EXEMPLAIRE SANS ÉQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. AN UNPRECEDENTED COPY. [Click Below for Full Description]

HOGARTH PRESS.) DOSTOEVSKY, Fyodor.
London: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press,, 1922. With introductory and explanatory notes. Translated by S. S. Koteliansky and Virginia Woolf. Octavo. Original light blue quarter cloth, printed paper label to spine and front cover, blue patterned paper boards. Spine label lightly soiled, very minor wear to extremities, minor toning at head of rear cover. A very good copy. First edition in English, first impression. An excellent Hogarth Press association copy, being the copy of Ralph and Frances Partridge, with their pencilled joint ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Ralph was the first assistant of the Hogarth Press, and it was there that he met Frances, where they worked together on an unexpurgated edition of the Greville diaries, under the editorship of Lytton Strachey. "According to Virginia Woolf, [Ralph] Partridge was lumpy, grumpy, slovenly and stupid, but also nice, strong, fundamentally amiable and well connected; he was attached to them and to the Press 'like a drone' but refused to really commit to it" (Helen Southworth, Leonard and Virginia Woolf, The Hogarth Press and the Networks of Modernism, 2010). Ralph and Frances married in 1932 after Ralph's first wife, Dora Carrington, committed suicide in despair at Lytton Strachey's death. They would have written their joint signature in the book after this date; the front free endpaper also has Ralph's notation of "RP" in the top right corner (his usual style and place of notation, here with the "P" barely distinguishable) which he probably wrote in at the time of publication. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pagnol, Marcel
Marseille: Editions de "Fortunio". First edition (1922), inscribed by Pagnol to Eugene Silvain (doyen of the Comédie Francaise and very well known actor and author) in 1923. Pagnol notes that this is his last copy he has of the first edition. Small quarto, wraps, good plus copy, some shelfwear and soil to wraps, and what looks like old streaks of glue to rear wrap, contents tanning. Possibly Pagnol's first book (he also published a novel, Pirouettes, in 1922), from his earliest time in Paris, when he was still teaching English. Although he first started working on this play in 1913, completing it in 1920, it was not published until 1922. In 1928 Pagnol proposed staging it at the Theatre Silvain, with Eugene Silvain playing the title role, but although Silvain was friendly with the Pagnol, he declared that Pagnol had "no sense of theater." Pagnol was at that time an overnight success because of his play, Topaze, so it might have been professional jealousy on Silvain's part, as he came from an older generation and tradition. In any case a superb association copy between a young playwright and an older and established actor and author. Pagnol is best known these days for the film adaptation of Jean de Florette, a big hit in the 1980s. Good.

[Click Below for Full Description]
