Internal contents are generally in excellent condition, a bit of toning to the front wrapper and the ocassional marginal spot. Joyce's masterwork of modernism, one of the great books of the 20th century. Though it follows a single day in the life of Dubliner Leopold Bloom - June 16th, a day which has since become a worldwide holiday - Ulysses' complex structure is actually inspired by Homer's Odyssey. The book's stream of consciousness prose and its experimental nature were groundbreaking, and many of the techniques Joyce used have since become standard fare. Ulysses took Joyce over seven years to write, and the story of its publication became an epic in itself. The work was first released in serial from 1918 to 1920 in the magazine "The Little Review," and published in Paris in a limited first edition in 1922 by Sylvia Beach, the owner of the Shakespeare and Company bookstore. It was not, however, released in the UK and United States, where the book had quickly been banned. In fact, copies were smuggled into both countries until a landmark obscenity trial cleared the book for American publication in 1934. Joyce claimed that he "put in so many enigmas and puzzles [into Ulysses] that it will keep the professors bus … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maugham, W. Somerset
New York: George H. Doran Company, n.d. [1922]. Original orange paper-covered boards with yellow cloth spine, with red dust jacket. First Edition, consisting of 2000 copies published one month earlier than Heinemann's London edition. These are sketches resulting from Maugham's 1919-1920 trip up the Yangtze River in China; they are not so much sketches about what Maugham saw, but rather about whom he met -- especially Westerners who portray varying degrees of acceptance or resistance to Chinese culture (a friction at the heart of many Maugham novels).~This volume is in fine condition (one tiny chip in the front cover paper); the very uncommon red dust jacket is remarkably near-fine (spine faded as usual for the color red, one very small chip at the foot of the spine). Toole Stott A28a. Housed in a custom cloth slipcase with leather labels. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Kafka, Franz
Berlin/Leipzig: S. Fischer Verlag, 1922. First printing in the October, 1922 issue of Die Neue Rundschau(One of the most respected literary magazines of Germany - in publication since 1890). A Fine copy in custom clamshell box.Kafka "indirectly lifted this piece to significant stature in his oeuvre by exempting it from the wish of annihilation that he had decreed for most of his other works. In addition, he chose it as the title story for the last volume of stories that he was able to oversee...Kafka, at the time he wrote this story, was already severely ill with tuberculosis of the larynx, very thin, and able to eat only with great difficulty. Many have seen his interest in this subject matter arising from his physical condition. The story depicts a circus spectacle that was popular in the latter part of the nineteenth century and existed until World War 1. Like each of the final four stories that Kafka wrote during the last two years of his life, it has as its central figure an individual approaching the end of a life that might be considered futile. With historical accuracy it portrays a hunger artist, whose talent and profession is fasting for pay. Enclosed in a cage, he is observed by the public. To the hunger artist, fasting is both art and life." (A Franz Kafka Encyclopedia)***For even better pricing, visit our website*****

ELUARD, Paul, and Max ERNST
Au Sans Pareil, Paris, 1922. 8vo, pp. 51, [3], with 10 illustrations by Max Ernst, one in colour; recto of first leaf inscribed ‘à F. S. Flint / Cordial homage / de Paul Eluard; the page with the dedication a little discoloured; an excellent copy in the original mauve printed wrappers, with a further drawing by Ernst mounted on upper cover. THIS IS NO. 10 OF A TOTAL PRINT RUN OF 350 NUMBERED COPIES, HERE WITH A PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION TO THE ENGLISH POET AND TRANSLATOR F.S. FLINT, AND EXCEPTIONALLY ADDITIONALLY SIGNED BY ELUARD IN THE IMPRINT. Ernst met Eluard in 1921, and the two collaborated on various projects. Published in the same year as Les Malheurs des Immortels, this is a very early work illustrated by Ernst. ‘Eluard’s work from this time is known for its emphasis on linguistic and semantic dislocation; in his own poems, he was attempting to allow for visual and sensory perception of poetic meaning’ (Poetry Foundation, online). [Click Below for Full Description]

Brock, including six frontispieces and by six ornamented title pages in red and blue. Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938), artist and book illustrator began his illustration of Jane Austen's novels with pen and ink drawings in 1895 and Dent published several editions using his work which was soon to appear in full colour. Torino, 1922-1925. Torino,, 1922-1925.. In folio (mm. 492x330), 2 volumi, tela mod. [Click Below for Full Description]

STERN, Otto & GERLACH, Walther.
Vieweg & Berlin, Braunschweig. First edition, the very rare offprints, of the famous Stern-Gerlach experiment, which demonstrated the spatial quantization predicted by the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantum theory of the atom and (although this was not realised until later) the existence of electron spin. "This direct demonstration of spatial quantization was immediately accepted as among the most compelling evidence for quantum theory" (Friedrich & Herschbach, p. 57). "The Stern-Gerlach experiment is undoubtedly one of the great achievements of experimental physics" (Longair, p. 154). In a letter of March 1922 to Max Born, Einstein wrote: "The most interesting achievement at this point is the experiment of Stern and Gerlach." "Perhaps no other experiment is so often cited for elegant conceptual simplicity. From it emerged both new intellectual vistas and a host of useful applications of quantum science" (Friedrich & Herschbach, p. 53). Stern continued his work on atomic and molecular beams, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1943 "for his contribution to the development of the molecular ray method and his discovery of the magnetic moment of the proton." No copies of these offprints located on OCLC, and no copies in auction records."In 1921, the most advanced quantum theory was still the Bohr model, as generalized for a hydrogenic atom in 1916 by Arnold Sommerfeld and, independently, by Peter Debye. Their proposed quantization conditions implied that Bohr’s quasiplanetary electron orbits should assume only certain discrete spatial orientations with respect to an external field … [Click Below for Full Description]

KHLEBNIKOV Velimir
Prima edizione. [Bibliografia: Compton 1992: pp. 111-113 (illustrazione); Markov 1973: pag. 384; MoMA 2003: n. 417]. publisher’s soft cover, 35-[1] pages, line-drawing by Petr. Miturich on front cover. Khlebnikov’s famous dramatic poem, one of his most signi cant examples of linguistic experimentation; the numerous phonetic associations and sound effects stress the poet’s interest for etymology and mathematical formulas. Bound at The Riverside Press for the publishers in full red morocco, title and decoration to spine gilt, covers panelled in gilt, turn-ins and top edges gilt, others untrimmed, red silk endpapers, red silk page markers. Title pages printed in red and black. Colour frontispieces and photogravure plates, largely from photographs by Charles S. Olcott, all printed on japon and with captioned tissue guards. Limited edition, number 16 of 750 large paper copies, with a manuscript leaf by Hearn inlaid and bound in to volume I, and signed by his widow, Setsu Koizumi, on an inserted japon leaf, all as issued. The leaf is from one of the autobiographic papers found after Hearn's death, recording incidents from his early years. The fragment is from a piece entitled "My Guardian Angel". In it, Hearn recalls how, when he was nearly six years old, a visitor named Cousin Jane instructed him about hell-fire, the knowledge of which disturbed him deeply. He subsequently acquired such a fear of Cousin Jane that he hallucinated her faceless presence one night. A portion of his description of the incident is contained in this autograph leaf: "I cried out in astonishment, "Cousin Jane!" - but she did not seem to hear; and she walked on slowly, with her head still thrown back that I could see nothing of her face above the chin. She walked directly past me..." Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) was an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seifert, Jaroslav and Karel Teige, editors
Ve?ernice, Prague. Large octavo (24 × 16 cm). Original decorative wrappers on dark green paper stock; 202, [6] pp. Numerous leaves of plates and reproductions in the text. A very good, entirely unrestored copy; light fading to left edge and tiny chip to lower right corner. A particularly handsome copy of this legendary first Dev?tsil publication (relatively cheaply printed and often encountered in poor condition), with typography by Karel Teige (the design using the black circle is repeated on the rear wrapper, with additional text, and on the ffep and title). The almanac was the result, in part, of Seifert and Teige's soujourn to Paris in 1922, where they met numerous key figures of the avant-garde world, such as Le Corbusier and Man Ray. The anthology reflects this new orientation away from both Soviet Proletkult aesthetics and the Czech expressionist scene, and towards a more exciting international avant-garde aesthetics encompassing a wide range of media and disciplines. With contributions by the Czech writers and poets Vít?zslav Nezval, Jaroslav Seifert, Karel Teige, Karel Schulz, foreign authors such as Jean Cocteau, Yvan Goll, and Il'ia Erenburg, and shorter notices about cinema, circus, and other forms of mass entertainment. Also features numerous reproductions of works by international avant-garde artists, such as Alexander Archipenko, Marc Chagall, Tsuguharu Foujita, George Grosz, Fernand Léger, Jacques Lipchitz, Kisling, Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Rousseau, Seurat, D. P. Sterenberg, Maurice Utrillo, and Ossip Zadkine. Also contains a short summary of the Devetsil g … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modest rubbing on the wrappers, faint dampstain confined to a tiny bit of the bottom corner, else near fine. HOLMES, Oliver Wendell, Jr
Boston: Ginn, Heath, and Company, 10 March 1922. First Edition. Wraps. Browning to the paper, wear to the very upper right corner. Very Good, important, and scarce. Reprinted from the Boston Daily Advertiser, by the Author's permission. First Separate Edition in self-printed stitched wraps (5" x 7-1/2"), 12 pages, of Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.'s first printed speech, a celebration of his comrades, Union and Confederate, who gave their lives in the War Between the States, interwoven with themes of conciliation and high moral purpose, as well as the shadow the war still cast upon those who survived it. INSCRIBED to Mrs. Lockwood and SIGNED by the future Supreme Court Justice at the top of the front with "DEAD, YET LIVING" crossed out twice by Holmes. "Such hearts--ah me, how many!--were stilled twenty years ago; and to us who remain behind is left this day of memories. Every year--in the full tide of spring, at the height of the symphony of flowers and love and life--there comes a pause, and through the silence we hear the lonely pipe of death. Year after year lovers wandering under the apple trees and through the clover and deep grass are surprised with sudden tears as they see black veiled figures stealing through the morning to a soldier's grave. Year after year the comrades of the dead follow, with public honor, procession and commemorative flags and funeral march--honor and grief from us who stand almost alone, and have seen the best and noblest of our generation pass away." Holmes had recently been appointed to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. This speech woul … [Click Below for Full Description]

WITTGENSTEIN, Ludwig.
Harcourt Brace & Company, New York, 1922. Half title with publisher's list on verso + TP + [5] = Note page + 7-189 + 1 blank leaf, Octavo. First American Edition(Frongia/McGuiness "Tract." p. 42). Between "The world is everything that is the case" and "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent," Wittgenstein presents this monumental work which is usually accorded the honor of being "the most important book of twentieth-century philosophy". Printed in English with facing German texts, this is the first American edition (printed from the original English sheets with a new title page) in book form of what first appeared in 1921 in the final number of Annalen der Naturphilosophie, the text here revised by the author and a translation made by Frank P. Ramsey under the editorship of C. K. Ogden. Bertrand Russell, Wittgenstein's one-time teacher, supplied the uncomprehending "Introduction". (Regarding the "Introduction", Wittgenstein wrote Russell on April 9, 1920: "There's so much of it that I'm not quite in agreement with - bothwhere you're critical of me and also where you're simply trying to elucidate my point of view." [WA, p. 23]) Apart from one paper published in 1929 - which he considered weak and confused - the Tractatus was the only philosophical work Wittgenstein published in his lifetime. The first printing of the book did not sell well (a second edition did not appear until 1933) and all copies were not bound at the time of publication. As more copies were called for and bound, at some point in late 1925 this undated ten-page catalog was added to the book ( … [Click Below for Full Description]
