The Novels of Charlotte, Emily, & Anne Bront?

London - J. M. Dent & Sons, 1922. London - J. M. Dent & Sons, 1922 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A nicely bound set of Dent's illustrated editions of the works of the Bront sisters. Comprising three of the full six volumes, with 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey' by Anne Bront and 'Shirley' and 'Villette' by Charlotte Bront. The Bronts were a nineteenth-century literary family. The sisters, Charlotte (born 21 April 1816), Emily (born 30 July 1818 ), and Anne (born 17 January 1820), are well known as poets and novelists. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature. With colouredillustrations by Edmund Dulac. Bound by Riviere & Son. Condition: In half calf decorative bindings with cloth covered boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed with some wear to the extremities, most prominently to spines. Minor loss to spine of Villette. Rear board of Shirley absent, front board held by endpaper only. Front board of Villette detached but present. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are verybright and clean. Overall: FAIR..

        Ulysses

Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922 - Original blue wrappers. Some wear and stains, signs of handling, but a very good, unrestored copy. Quarter morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION. This is one of 750 numbered copies (from an edition of 1000) of the most sought-after book of 20th-century literature. Early in 1918, Ezra Pound secured Ulysses, then in progress, for the avant-garde American literary magazine The Little Review. Joyce was delighted to know that his book was being read and talked about, if only in modernist circles, and the serial publication spurred the author on as he tried to keep pace with the magazine?s schedule. Several numbers were seized as obscene and burned by the United States Post Office, and the obscenity trial began on February 14, 1921 began, resulting in the editors? conviction. The serial publication of Ulysses ceased, and the American publishers who had considered publishing the book abandoned the project.Within weeks Joyce agreed to Sylvia Beach?s offer that the first edition appear in Paris under her Shakespeare and Company imprint in 1922. T.S. Eliot told Virginia Woolf after reading Ulysses, ?How could anyone write again after achieving the immense prodigy of the last chapter?? Gertrude Stein commented, ?Joyce is good. He is a good writer. People like him because he is incomprehensible and anybody can understand him.? [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Etiquette

New York: Funk & Wagnalls Company, 1922. New York: Funk & Wagnalls Company, 1922. First edition of this seminal work in etiquette and personal relations. Octavo, original blue cloth with titles to the spine and front panel in gilt. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with the lightest of rubbing. A very nice copy uncommon in this condition.Etiquette is a seminal work in personal relations that ranges from topics on how to conduct oneself when meeting strangers to how one should behave at formal dinners and engagements. It has pioneered many social networking concepts, granting Post a name synonymous with proper etiquette and manners that is referenced in etiquette books even today. Joan Didion, contemporary author of The Year of Magical Thinking, considered Post's entry on funerals a source of great consolation after the passing of her husband (Campbell, 2005). The recent publication of Post's first full-length biography suggests that her legacy is pertinent more now than ever (Claridge, 2008).
