Vignettes Décoratives Dans Le Goût Du Jour. Documents d'Art. Art appliqué français moderne

1922. Paris, Éditions Albert Morancé, 1922. 8 pp (titlepage & introduction by G. Umbdenstock) & 30 hand-coloured plates loosely held in original half cloth portfolio with ties. (some fingerstains). Thirty hand-coloured plates with art-nouveau motives in vivid colours. These designs were created as a reaction against the too charged decorations at the end of the 19th century. Henri Gillet was one of the most well-known French decorators of the Art-Nouveau period. Umbdenstock in his introduction says that the most remarkable thing about Gillet's designs is the apparently effortlessness with which they were created; they all seem simple and are very elegant. The harmony of colours is striking. They are either vivid colours with contrast colours or nuances of one and the same colour. A beautiful book.

These, and some of her other early drawings, were recopied and used for the book” (Linder, pp. 251-252).Linder, p. 430. Quinby 26. V & A 1534.

Ulysses (One of 750 copies Signed & Dated)

Shakespeare and Company, Paris 1922 - Specially bound in full leather in 2 volumes. This is number 389 of a the special 750 copies printed on handmade, laid paper. Signed and dated in ink by James Joyce: "James Joyce 9. ix. 1924" on the front endpaper following the front blue wrapper. Volume I contains 370 pages. Volume II begins on page 371 and and ends on p. 732 with the "Trieste-Zurich-Paris, 1914-1921" dateline. The next page is printed in capital letters: "Printed for Sylvia Beach by Maurice Darantiere at Dijon, France." The rear wrapper is not present at the end of volume two. Both volumes have been specially bound in full leather with 4 gilt rectangular rules and a delicate inner rectangle of hand-tooled chain patterns culminating in larger floral designs at the inside corners of the front and rear boards. Both front boards bear the name of "JOAN" in vertical gilt capital letters. The spine of volume I is missing 6" of the 9.5" of the spine length, but the top portion with "I" is present. The front blue wrapper printed in White with "Ulysses" by James Joyce is clean and crisp, as is the text throughout volumes one and two. The top edges are gilded. And there are predominantly orange and grey marbled endpapers. There is hand-tooled dentelle gilding along the front and rear inside edges of the boards as well. Both volumes have some pencil scrawlings on the front endpapers, but nothing affecting the text. Despite the two-volume format and the missing rear wrapper, modern first edition authority Allen Ahearn opined that this signed and dated copy in Joyce's hand of one of the 750 specially printed first editions is perhaps as scarce as one of the 100 signed copies, given that none of the 750 copies was issued with Joyce's signature. This copy was signed and dated two years after publication in 1924. This edition is limited to 1000 copies: 100 copies (signed) on Dutch handmade paper numbered from 1 to 100; 150 copies on vergé d'Arches numbered from 101 to 250; 750 copies on handmade paper numbered from 251 to 1000. This is copy No. 389. "The publisher asks the reader’s indulgence for typographical errors unavoidable in the exceptional circumstances. S.B." In a review in The Dial, T.S. Eliot said of Ulysses: "I hold this book to be the most important expression which the present age has found; it is a book to which we are all indebted, and from which none of us can escape." He went on to claim that Joyce was not at fault if people after him did not understand it: "The next generation is responsible for its own soul; a man of genius is responsible to his peers, not to a studio full of uneducated and undisciplined coxcombs." The book has its critics; Virginia Woolf stated that "Ulysses was a memorable catastrophe—immense in daring, terrific in disaster." Ulysses has been called "the most prominent landmark in modernist literature", a work where life's complexities are depicted with "unprecedented, and unequalled, linguistic and stylistic virtuosity." That style has been stated to be the finest example of the use of stream-of-consciousness in modern fiction, with the author going deeper and farther than any other novelist in handling interior monologue. This technique has been praised for its faithful representation of the flow of thought, feeling, mental reflection, and shifts of mood.         A Submariner's Album in the Far East - HMS L4 on the China Station, Hong Kong, Wei Hai Wei, British North Borneo

China Station: , 1922-3. Small landscape quarto photograph album (178 × 238 mm) Contemporary brown "lizard-skin" cloth, stamped "Photos" on the upper board. 148 original photographs (63 × 106 mm and vice versa) mounted on 24 card leaves, all captioned in red ink. A little rubbed at the extremities, endpapers neatly excised, a few tape repairs to the internal binding, some images a little faded, but overall very good. Excellent record of submarine service in Asia containing an interesting selection of images, over fifty of them in Hong Kong, more than twenty of Wei Hai Wei, sixteen of Singapore, ten in Malaysia, and a handful in British North Borneo, Labuan, Jesselton and Kuchin. The Hong Kong group includes a sequence showing the celebrations for the Prince of Wales' visit in 1922, the Prince greeted by Admiral Duff, illuminations and street decorations, and a further sequence relating to the King's Birthday with various groups including Sikhs marching past. There are also picturesque street scenes "in Coolie Quarter", a "Native Funeral"; "transporting pigs", a Dragon Boat in the harbour, racing in Happy Valley, "Foreign Consular Offices" from the Navy Yard, and a view from the Peak. The WHW images inevitably include many of shipping "The China Squadron", "HMS Curlew leaving the Station", and several of L.4 herself, but also, the High Street, the Walled City, Flagstaff Point Lighthouse, "Mainland from Centurion Hill", and some group shots of the compiler and his crew-mates. Mounted towards the end of the album is an extremely interesting group of around twenty "portraits", interior and exterior, of L.4 herself; the control room, the ward room, wireless office, motor and main switchboards, the diving wheels and gyro, the engine room, fore and after ends, the bridge, bow and stern views from the bridge, and the bridge itself. The owner/compiler is pictured, a lieutenant in tropical uniform with pith helmet, identified - unfortunately - by initials only, "Yours Truely [sic.] R.A.B."

Paris: c.1922 - Quarto. Pinkish textured card portfolio, embossed title and pictorial panel heightened with gilt, containing 4 separate brochures, titled as above, the first 3 in embossed paper wraps, the last a light card bifolium. The portfolio is somewhat rubbed and soiled with some professional restoration to the flaps, but the contents are very good indeed. A highly attractive gathering of promotional material for Blériot's production aircraft and flying school from the Golden Age of Aviation, the spectacular pochoirs are a particularly appealing feature. Loosely inserted is an elegantly printed octavo tri-fold card leaflet "Hispano-Suiza Aviation 1914-1919", which opens to present a Roll of Honour of the aces and fallen of the Allied Air Forces in the First World War.
