The Steamer Yellow-Stone on the 19th April 1833

Schmidt and Guenther, [Leipzig 1922 - From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) A fine view of the side-wheeler in the then treacherous waters of the Missouri River: the longest river in the country, it was considered by far the most difficult of all western rivers to navigate. The steamer Yellow Stone had run aground on a sandbank on the evening of the 18th and remained there overnight. The following morning a flatboat from Fort Osage, located some three and half miles upstream, had arrived to unload part of the cargo and lighten its draft. Prince Maximilian recorded in his journal that `Mr. Bodmer had made from shore this morning a pretty sketch of the ship as it was unloaded, but the wind was unpleasant and stirred up so much sand that he could not paint'. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. David C.         THE MEMOIRS

The Casanova Society, London 1922 - 254 x 203 mm (10 x 8"). 12 volumes bound in six. Translated by Arthur Machen. ONE OF 1,000 COPIES. Attractive later burgundy half morocco over red linen boards by Bayntun (stamp-signed on front flyleaf in each volume), raised bands flanked by gilt rules, spine panels with gilt chandelier-like centerpiece, each spine with two olive brown morocco labels, top edges gilt. With 12 frontispieces of various kinds (a bust of Casanova, a large fold-out map of Venice, a fold-out facsimile of two documents in Casanova's hand, an engraving showing a Casanova escape, two portraits of Casanova, a title page of a minor work by Casanova, a portrait of Manon Baletti, engravings of a London cityscape and of Vaux Hall, Casanova's death record, and his grave). Corners a bit worn, joints of the early volumes a little rubbed (two joints cracked and boards consequently with a little wobble), one volume with small loss of leather at bottom of spine, but still quite an attractive set, the bindings entirely sound and without any serious wear, and the wide-margined text in virtually unused condition. Based on the rare unabridged London edition of 1894, this is an attractively bound copy of a limited edition of what Franco Fido (in the "Cambridge History of Italian Literature") calls "one of the most entertaining and exciting tales of the century." Fido says that sometime during the last eight years of his life, the Italian-born Casanova (1725-98) "composed his 'Histoire de ma Vie,' above all in order to relive in writing the vivid sensations and intense pleasures of his vagabond, libertine life and thus compensate for his gloomy and solitary existence as librarian in a remote castle in Bohemia." Written in fluent French, the account describes with unabashed frankness Casanova's rogueries and amours across an 18th century Europe that comes alive as the narrative backdrop. A writer of romantic and macabre tales, our translator Arthur Machen (1863-1947) provides a preface here in which he calls Casanova not only a "woman hunter," but also an "occult swindler" who victimizes senators, noble ladies, and Dutch financiers with a phony cabala. Also in this special edition are two additional chapters discovered by Arthur Symons, an index, and a map indicating the hero's itineraries. Our quarto-size volumes are distinguished by an extremely pleasing italic typeface and are handsomely printed in general. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Paradise of Children, The"

[n.p.]: , 1922. - A Superb Original Arthur Rackham Watercolor Drawingfor Nathaniel Hawthorne’s "A Wonder Book" RACKHAM, Arthur (1867-1939). "The Paradise of Children." London: 1922. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing for the tinted line drawing illustrating "The Paradise of Children" ("Pandora’s Box") in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s A Wonder Book (London: [n.d., 1922]). Signed and dated at lower right. Image size: 15 x 11 inches (381 x 279 mm.). Matted, framed, and glazed."Long, long ago, when this old world was in its tender infancy, there was a child, who never had either a father or a mother; and, that he might not be lonely, another child, fatherless and motherless like himself, was sent from a far country, to live with him, and be his playfellow and helpmate. Her name was Pandora. The first thing that Pandora saw, when she entered the cottage where Epimetheus dwelt, was a great box. And almost the first question which she put to him, after crossing the threshold, was this,—‘Epimetheus, what have you in that box?’ ‘My dear little Pandora,’ answered Epimetheus, ‘That is a secret, and you must be kind enough not to ask any questions about it. The box was left here to be kept safely, and I do not myself know what it contains.’‘But who gave it to you?’ asked Pandora. ‘And where did it come from?’‘That is a secret too,’ replied Epimetheus.‘How provoking!’ exclaimed Pandora, pouting her lip. ‘I wish the great ugly box were out of the way!’‘Oh come, don’t think of it anymore" cried Epimetheus. "Let us run out of doors, and have some nice play with the other children.’It is thousands of years since Epimetheus and Pandora were alive; and the world, nowadays, is a very different sort of thing from what it was in their time. Then, everybody was a child. There needed no fathers and mothers to take care of the children; because there was no danger, nor trouble of any kind, and no clothes to be mended, and there was always plenty to eat and drink. Whenever a child wanted his dinner, he found it growing on a tree; and, if he looked at the tree in the morning, he could see the expanding blossom of that night’s supper; or, at eventide, he saw the tender bud of tomorrow’s breakfast. It was a very pleasant life indeed. No labor to be done, no tasks to be studied; nothing but sports and dances, and sweet voices of children talking, or caroling like birds, or gushing out in merry laughter, throughout the livelong day."This charming watercolor drawing depicts life as it was before Pandora opened the "great ugly box"— a wonderfully gentle pastoral scene, with a group of three naked children dancing merrily, without a care in the world, with "the expanding blossoms of that night’s supper" hanging heavily on the tree above their heads and "the tender bud of tomorrow’s breakfast" growing on the plants in the foreground."The moment one opens Hawthorne’s Wonder Book one becomes aware of the rounding and softening of form in Rackham’s work. The modern Pandora of Hawthorne opens her box for the world in 1921, and she is a very living young girl, with breasts just beginning to swell, indicating that Rackham was aware of the undertones of this story which is being retold with every lifetime. In ‘The Paradise of Children’ from the same text the children are drawn in line, but the washes of colour give them a rotundity of form and a very human life. The point which Rackham is making, surely, is that these are real children, a real Pandora, and not some dream from fairy land" (Fred Gettings, Arthur Rackham, p. 141).

Direcciòn de Talleres Gráficos Dependiente de la Secretaria de Educacion Pública Mèxico, Mexico City 1922 - 3 parts in 2 volumes: Volume 1, part 1: cii+326+xvi with tables (some folding), maps (some folding and in color), plates (many folding and in color), photographs, illustrations and figures. Volume 1, part 2: [363]-778+xii with tables (some folding), maps (some folding and in color), plates (many folding and in color), photographs, illustrations and figures. Volume 2: 670+xxx with tables, maps (some folding), plates, photographs, illustrations and figures. Quarto (11" x 7 1/2') round in full leather with raised spine bands, black and white labels in gilt lettering. Two title pages with one in red and black. First edition. This report embodies the results of some five years of preparation survey, investigation, and excavation on the part of the combined force of the Mexican Department of Anthropology, with the assistance of a corps of specialists from other governmental scientific departments, including biologists, geologists, meteorologists and even artists and musicians. The first volume is that of the greatest interest to archaeologists, consisting of three parts: Introduction, Synthesis, Conclusion and Remarks; Physico-Biological Survey; and the Pre-Hispanic Inhabitants. The second volume contains the Colonial Inhabitants and interest to anthropologists, while the third volume contains The Colonial Inhabitants and The Inhabitants During the Nineteenth Century, while the third volume refers to The Contemporaneous Inhabitants and contains considerable valuable material on somatology, ethnology, folklore and linguistics. In the Synthesis is to be found the detailed report, profusely illustrated, on the excavation of the beautiful Temple of Quetzalcoatl which was discovered too late for this report to be included in the chapter on the Archaeology of Teotihuacán. The greater part of volume one, 312 pages and 130 plates, is devoted to the Pre-Hispanic Population, consisting of eight chapters on Physical Type, Intellectual Manifestations and Archaeology. Of consummate interest to Americanists are the chapters on archaeology, giving as they do the full details, amply illustrated by photographs, maps, plans, drawings and reconstructions, of the recent excavations at Teotihuacán carried out by the department, combined and digested with the results of earlier investigations. Volume two, containing parts 3 on The Colonial Population, and 4 on the Population in the Nineteenth Century treats of economic, social and religious life, colonial architecture, history and similar topics. Volume three, the fifth part, on The Contemporary Population, is also primarily of interest to sociologists, though containing much of interest for students of Mexican archaeology and linguistics. The dominant note of the entire work is completeness and comprehensiveness. Every possible phase of the survey is treated with thoroughness. The volumes are tributes to the admirable ability of the Mexican printer, engraver, artist and binder, being of a quality not to be excelled. (American Anthropologist volume 26, pages 416-421) Condition: Slight stain to spine of volume 2. Leather at edges lightly rubbed else a better than very good set.         Q.B.L. or The Bride's Reception: Being A Short Cabalistic Treatise On The Nature And Use Of The Tree Of Life.

Printed for the Author, Chicago 1922 - First edition of Achad's most important book. Ex-Libris Aleister Crowley. Extraordinary Presentation Copy Inscribed By Frater Achad: "To my Beloved Father / 666 / in the hope that this, my / first book, may meet with / his approval / 777". 8vo., 106 pp + 43pp. + 4 colour plates (including frontispiece) + 1 folded black & white diagram. Limited Edition: #2 of 250 signed copies. THE MOST IMPORTANT POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION COPY. Black paper-covered boards, linen spine, paper title label, top edge gilt. Label slightly chipped, some wear to corners and edges of boards. Light damping along top margin of first few leaves and a couple of inconsequential nicks. Interesting bookplate of Phyllis Duveen. A very good & important copy. Aleister Crowley ("666") considered himself to be the "Spiritual Father" to Frater Achad (Charles Stansfeld Jones, "777"), as he relates on page 801 of the CONFESSIONS: "What I had really done . was to beget a Magical Son. So, precisely nine months afterwards . Frater O.I.V., entirely without my k now ledge, became a Babe of the Abyss. . The Book of the Law speaks of this 'Child' as 'One,' as if with absolute vagueness. But the motto which Frater O.I.V. had taken on becoming a neophyte was 'Achad,' which is the Hebrew word for 'One.' It is further predicted that this 'Child' shall discover the Key of the interpretation of the Book itself, and this I had been unable to do." In this light, Achad refers to Aleister Crowley as his "Beloved Father" in the INSCRIBED DEDICATION. This is copy # 2 of 250; we presume that copy #1 was retained by the Author. The bookplate of Phyllis Duveen, the wife of Denis I. Duveen, a noted collector of Alchemical books & Esoterica] was possibly executed by AUBREY BEARDSLEY (although unsigned). The Duveen Collection is noted for its depth and balance. The catalogue of Duveen's library "Bibliotheca Alchemica et Chemica: An Annotated Catalogue of Printed Books on Alchemy, Chemistry, and Cognate Subjects in the Library of Denis I. Duveen," printed in London, 1949 remains a touchstone for scholars and collectors of European Chemistry before 1900. There are some penciled annotations in the margins of the text. These include the following: Page 2 has the phrase "get Essay Berashith" (to be found in the Collected Works of Aleister Crowley). Page 49 has the word "Tau" noted across from a discussion of THE UNIVERSE. Page 64 has the phrase "Book 777" across from a section on THE TREE OF LIFE. Page 97 has the phrase "Liber Legis" in the margin where the author refers to THE INITIATION OF 1917. BY THE MASTERS OF WISDOM FROM OTHER PLANES OF BEING. We cannot confirm that this penciling is in the hand of Crowley, nor of the previous owner Duveen but all things are possible. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH AND OTHER STORIES.

London, New York, Toronto and Melbourne: Cassell and Company, Ltd, [1922] - Octavo, pp. [1-8] 1-307 [308] [309-310: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition. The contents of the Cassell edition differ from those in American edition published by Harper in 1922. The Cassell edition has the eight tales featuring Horne Fisher and the four-part "The Trees of Pride," plus three stories not in the Harper edition; "The Garden of Smoke," "The Five of Swords" and "The Tower of Treason." "The Garden of Smoke" is a murder mystery about roses and drugs. As is typical with Chesterton, it's also about the flimsiness of appearances and the paradox that the only really solid things are those that are unseen. A whiff of fantasy hangs over the story with its premise of a special, very rare kind of opium so good that it not only supplies the needed inspiration for "a famous lady novelist and fashionable poet," but the motivation for a murder. As is also typical with Chesterton, the male characters here and in the following story move about (deliberately or helplessly) on a plane of irony, while the heroine moves about on a plane of romance. "The Trees of Pride" is longer, more ambitious and more fantastic, dealing with the legend and superstitions surrounding a stand of peacock trees, a flamboyant Asian/African species that has been imported to a seaside town in Cornwall. The locals believe them responsible for a spate of recent deaths and disappearances in the town and want to cut them down. The owner of the estate, one of those "advanced" and "enlightened" specimens of modernity that Chesterton loves to attack, refuses. The arrival of an American critic and the local poet he has discovered provide the catalyst for what follows: the disappearance and presumed death of the estate owner after he announces angrily that he is going to spend the night in the grove of demon trees to dispel the local superstitions. The mystery is resolved with a kind of triple reverse as the supernatural gives way to the criminal, which gives way to the humorous, which gives way, once again, to the supernatural. The story has something of the feeling of Chesterton's fantasy masterpiece, THE MAN WHO WAS THURSDAY, as the reader falls through one trap door after another. The most explicit serious theme here is that elites should not be quick to dismiss a thing just because it is held true by the masses. The background legend from North Africa about the carnivorous peacock trees constitutes a very attractive and potently weird storyette; this and the ambiguity surrounding them in modern Cornwall allow for this story to be classified as fantastic. "The Five of Spades" is a murder mystery set in France amid the intersecting worlds of dueling and business. It blends cleverness (in its detection), idealism (in its romance), urbanity (in its cultural insights) and an abiding sense of mystery (in both the macrocosm of its plot and the microcosm of its aphorisms) as one seeming truth gives way, like a discarded mask, to another, and another, and so on: all of it adding up that characteristic Chestertonian bravura whose exuberant levity is exactly balanced by its moral gravity. The same could be said of "The Tower of Treason" (or, indeed, to one degree or another, of everything else that the author wrote), which moves the setting from the bright plains of France to the dark mountains of an unspecified Balkan country, from the busy doings of the secular to the intricate broodings of the monastic. The story involves diamonds and history, treason and sacrifice, each one indestructible, disappearing only to come back in faint echoes or brilliant flashes. This, the final story of the collection, closes it out on a more overtly religious note - or chord - reminding us that, at the very heart of Christianity and shot through it, is that Chestertonian trademark, paradox, the paradox of sacrifice, divine and human, which wears a mask of loss only to stand revealed in the final act as ultimate [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
