Original printed wrappers; inscriptions on the front cover, small repairs. Kept in a modern black folding box.         SIDELIGHTS ON RELATIVITY: Ether and Relativity; II: Geometry and Experience.

Methuen & Co., London 1922 - First Edition. Small 8vo., 56pp. + 8 pages of adverts. A very good copy of this early & now scarce Einstein title. Publisher's blue cloth uncommon variant with lettering stamped in dark blue on the upper cover & spine - the lettering sharp but the spine blue cloth faded as usual. In a very good unrestored original publisher's dustwrapper, black type on a turquoise ground, showing moderate use with narrow chips to the spine crown, heel & tips [one small chip on the back panel]. Contains two small diagrams on pages 49 & 51. In a fine custom slipcase with E=MC2 in relief on the side. Very nice indeed. Contains two lectures: "Ether and the Theory of Relativity" delivered on May 5th, 1920 in the University of Leyden. "Geometry and Experience" an expanded form of an Address given to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin on January 27th, 1921. Translated by G.B. Jeffery & W. Perrett. One of Einstein's scarcest Methuen titles, certainly as difficult as: RELATIVITY: The Special and General Theory, published in 1920 & THE MEANING OF RELATIVITY, also in 1922. Vignette auf Hinterdeckel u. illustr. Vorsätzen. Vorsatz m. unterlegtem Einriss (Klebeband).. Heller, Die bunte Welt 576; Lex. KJL IV,221 u. Kat. Stuck-Villa 510. (illustriert v. Rolf Rettich; mit deutlichen Text-Änderungen).

On Secret Patrol in High Asia

London: John Murray,, 1922. With an Introduction by Major-General Sir George Younghusband. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spine, and the Guides badge gilt to the upper board. Frontispiece and 15 other plates, folding route map and large coloured folding area map at the rear. Spine sunned and a little crumpled head and tail, free endpapers browned, light toning, a few light pencilled underlinings and marginalia, but a very good copy. First edition. Uncommon account of service with the Guides in Persia, Afghanistan, Transcaspia, Ferghana and Sinkiang. "Captain Blacker himself early in the Great War saw much hard fighting in France, till shot down and disabled while in the Flying Corps. Sent back to the regimental depôt to rest and recuperate, the spirit being more than willing he did so very shortly, and then with the true Guides spirit started on a series of hazardous services which were prolonged over three years, and during which he and his patrol covered very nearly 10,000 miles on foot or on horseback … During their patrol the Guides came into the vortex of wonderful exploits hidden from view by the absorbing events in the theatre of war nearer home. Of these none are greater than those of the 19th Punjabis and 28th Light Cavalry who defeated in battle some 10,000 Bolsheviks, and established the fear of God and of British-led Indian soldiers throughout several thousand square miles of Asia … Thoise who wish to read an enthralling tale of endurance, courage, and adventure cannot do better than follow Captain Blacker and his gallant Guides on their secret patrol" (from Younghusband's introduction).

Herode [Salome: drame en un acte].

Paris c. 1922 - Original illustration in red and black ink and pencil on paper. 11 7/8 by 9 1/2 in. This drawing first appeared in Fifty Drawings by Alastair, published by Knopf in 1925, and a similar version was used in the Paris edition of Wilde's text published the same year. Beardsley's popularity and sudden death created opportunities for other artists of the Decadent movement, such as Alastair and Erté. This drawing exhibits the understated menace of Beardsley, but with an eye toward texture. The detail in Herod's elaborate robe, and the plant and vase to his left exhibit a distinctly Asian aesthetic. Some glue residue on verso, else a very fine drawing by one of the most popular book illustrators of the first half of the twentieth century. (Arwas: 26. Published in Fifty Drawings by Alastair).

Signature ("Charles M. Doughty"), endorsement upon a cheque from Wilfred Merton for 4 guineas, drawn on the National, Provincial and Union Bank of England, 7 June 1922

Eastbourne, 1922. 3 x 8 inches. Signed in ink; Merton's signature struck through in red; ink stamp of Dicker & Co. Family Grocers, Eastbourne, on verso; paid into Barclays Bank, Eastbourne on 12 June 1922. Fine . Autograph signature of the great Arabian explorer and author Charles M. Doughty, endorsing a cheque for 4 guineas from Wilfred Merton (1888-1957), printer and business partner of Sir Emery Walker, with whom he published OF THE JUST SHAPING OF LETTERS (1917) and the Bruce Rogers edition of the Odyssey translated by T.E. Lawrence. Three months before the date of this cheque, The Chiswick Press printed an edition of twenty-five copies of 'Hogarth's "Arabia"' by Doughty. "Doughty received an inheritance in 1923 around the same time that his shareholdings fortuitously appreciated, but until then he and his family were often in difficult financial circumstances. He died on 20 January 1926 at Sissinghurst, Kent, after having moved there from Eastbourne in 1923, and was cremated at Golders Green. Charles Montagu Doughty is gone, but the staunch, stubbornly honest, and all-too-human hero Khalil will live for ever in the pages of Travels in Arabia Deserta" (ODNB)

Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) This image was printed from plates attributing the print to three different engravers: 'Ch. Vogel', 'Himely' and 'Hürlimann et Himely'. A highly atmospheric scene executed by Bodmer during the winter of 1833-1834 when the travelers stayed at Fort Clark on the banks of the upper reaches of Missouri River. The hide-wrapped poles represent the sun and the moon, which in turn are symbols of two of the most powerful Mandan deities: the Lord of Life (creator of all things) and the Old Woman Who Never Dies, who was associated with corn and buffalo. The Mandan standing before the effigies is apparently seeking the help of these sacred beings. In Mandan life no important decisions or undertakings were made without this sort of consultation, which generally involved fasting and offerings or sacrifices. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. David C.       Privately Printed, 1922 First Edition. Hardback. No Dustjacket. - 4to. pp 63. Copiously illustrated in colour throughout. German text, prose and verse, appears humorous or satirical. By the Czech artist Egon Adler (1892-1963) who died in USA. - 32 caricatures of Karlsbad society. The name of the recipient tipped in at the colophon (Walter Quittner) with a short handwritten sentiment initialled E.A. A German auction catalogue had this to say of their (worn) copy:- Erste und einzige Ausgabe, ungemein selten! - Num. Exemplar der Vorzugsausgabe, breitrandiger Druck auf chamoisfarb. Papier. - Bibliographisch nicht ermittelte Buchveröffentlichung des tschechischen Künstlers Egon Adler, geb. 1892 in Karlsbad, gest. ". [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Tracked by Wireless

Stanley Paul and Co. London (1922) - First English Edition, Advance Review Copy in original illustrated wrappers. E. Welch Ridout cover art. Extremely rare Hubin listed mystery title to be found in original advance state wrappers, with remnants of 7/6 price sticker at spine, a price reserved for hardcover editions published by Stanley Paul. Interesting copyright statement "Copyright in the United States of America by The Macaulay Company, New York, 1922." The first American Edition is believed to be published by Moffat, Yard and Co. and not Macaulay who apparently owned the rights. The jacket press from that Moffat edition states the following about his title: "Here is the first book of fiction that embraces one of sciences greatest achievements. Falconer is called upon by Scotland Yard to aid in the detection of a group of criminals who have turned the uses of radio into lawless channels. Acknowledged as the greatest radio expert of his day, Falconer traps them in his own radio net and brings them to belated justice. Truly the guilty secrets of many men and women have been detected by means of wireless, that science which daily reveals its further wonders to those persevering experimenters who seek so patiently to penetrate its mysteries." Very Good plus, some modest shelf wear, minor loss at spine ends, few pages lightly bumped at fore-edge. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
