Harcourt, Brace, New York 1922 - First Printing (no further printings noted), Second Issue, with 'Lyte' for 'Purdy' and 'any' for 'my' p. 49 (only 9500 copies of the first issue were printed before those two corrections were made). Thick 8vo: [6],401,[7]pp. Publisher's royal blue cloth, upper cover and spine lettered in blue (negative of orange title blocks) and orange; cream-colored dust jacket printed in French blue and black. Fine (very lightly read, if at all), with neat presentation inscription dated 1922 on first front blank; in a lightly restored example of the "absurdly fragile" (Pastore) jacket that presents as just about Fine, with a hint of fading to the spine and the flap folds dust-soiled. Pastore, pp. 67-73. Johnson, High Spots, pp. 50-51. Sinclair Lewis's unconventionally written tale of a middling, middle-aged man in a mid-level career in a Midwestern town facing a series of psychological crises that reveal to him the emptiness of his superficially successful and prosperous life. Like Main Street, Lewis's first best-selling novel, Babbitt generated controversy (Lewis found himself the target of articles in such unlikely journals as the National Real Estate Journal, Rotarian, and Nation's Business), became a cultural phenomenon, and contributed a new word to the language. Generally, reviewers saw the book as an advance on Main Street, with fewer dull spots. Because of it, H. L. Mencken became an avid Lewis supporter, writing in Smart Set that the novel was both a great "social document" and "bitingly funny." For many later readers, the book defines the 1920s, as did Scott Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise and The Great Gatsby and Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. And, not incidentally, it was more than partially responsible for Lewis winning the Nobel Prize. (adapted from The Literary Encyclopedia). Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Macmillan and Co. Limited. London.,1922. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Offsetting to part of the endpapers around the dustwrapper, otherwise a fine copy in publishers blue cloth with gilt ruling and lettering to spine. In the scarce original printed dustwrapper. There is some chipping to the top and bottom of spine, again not affecting the printed areas. Some general rubbing to the wrapper but still a very good example. Uncommon in dustwrapper.:

Zur Theorie der Lichtfortpflanzung in dispergierenden Medien.

Sitzungsberichten der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin 1922 - Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Zur Theorie der Lichtfortpflanzung in dispergierenden Medien. Complete. Quarto. Offprint from Sitzungsberichten der Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Berlin: 1922. First edition in very fine condition. This superb offprint is a separate printing of the Prussian Academy's session reports, here with independent pagination. A small number of such off prints were presented to the author by the publisher as voucher copies. References: Schilpp-Shields 162; Weil 120. This paper gives evidence that Einstein’s ideas on the photon were not able to contradict classical theory. "Since, after 1917, Einstein firmly believed that light-quanta were here to stay, it is not surprising that he would look for new ways in which the existence of photons might lead to observable deviation from the classical picture. In this he did not succeed. At one point, in 1921, he thought he had found a new quantum criterion, but it soon turned out to be a false lead [as demonstrated in this paper]". An excellent example. "The early Offprints from "Sitzungsberichten." are called "Sonderabdruck" up to Weil No.165 (including this). From Weil 166 they are called "Sonderausgabe.". - Before 161 (up to 160) the Offprints do not have separate title and pagination (the pagination follows the numbering in the periodical). From 166 the Offprint has both separate printed title and pagination. - ( So Weil Nos 161-165 is still "Abdruck", but with separate title and pagination)." [Attributes: First Edition]

SPECIAL PRICE of 900 pounds plus postage for UK purchaser prepared to pay by Sterling cheque drawn on UK bank A 12 volume set with 1922 hand coloured lithographed plates in generally very good condition overall. This works out at less than 50 pence per plate. This is the third edition which is described as enlarged, re-arranged according to the natural orders and entirely revised. The descriptions are by John T Boswell, the editor, with the exception of volume twelve which, due to the ill health of the editor, was completed by N E Brown of the Royal Herbarium, Kew. The plates are by J Sowerby, J D C Sowerby, J W Slater and John Edward Sowerby except for vol 12 which has plates by N E Brown, John Edward Sowerby and the great Walter Hood Fitch. The volumes are variously dated from 1876 to 1886 for vol 12. Vol 12 contains a 100 page index for the set. This is an ex library set. Internally the volumes are generally very clean - there is some light foxing/marking to a few pages - this is mostly confined to the first few and last pages in each volume. The vast majority of the plates are in excellent clean condition as shown by the photographs. A few plates have some markings - please look at the photographs for further information. As these are ex-library books there are the typical library markings on the inside front page of each volume and on the verso of each title page. However, as far as we can see, no other stamps throughout the volumes or on the plates. The bindings are all sound and tight. Externally, the green cloth boards of these volumes are in generally very good clean condition - there is little evidence of some corners being lightly bumped. Green leather spines are in generally very good condition - there is a bit of wear in places and a mark where the library stamp was. The gold on the spines are generally bright and easily visible. This set looks good on the bookshelf. The Bianco Library website has 12 pictures of these books including both medium and large images. This description is to be read in conjunction with these photographs. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FIRST EDITION. VERY NICE SET. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
