John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1922 - 1922 Original Hardback Wisden - Signed by Pardon to Caine

1922. Hi, This lot is a 1922 Original Hardback Wisden in OK Condition, 1922s do not come in very good very often and there are nicer condition 1922s out there but this one is special as it is a presentation Wisden, it is signed by the Editor Sydney H Pardon to Caine (future editor) on the title page. So condition, first off the gilt is bright to front and spine , the boards however are dark and marked and there is a lot of wear between the spine cloth and the front/back boards. Inside the hinges are strong but some yellow coming away to the front hinge. A bit grubby inside but not too bad. Great Photoplate. Sticker to first page.

A skin lodge of an Assiniboin chief

[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Salathé and Hurlimann after Bodmer, issue with no imprint line. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) A fine image containing all the essentials a Plains Indian needed or wanted to sustain life. On June 10th 1833, a camp of about twenty five tipis was set up by a band of Assiniboin near Fort Union, at the junction of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers. The tipi in the foreground is painted with bear figures: the owner of this tipi was assumed to have strong supernatural powers (an essential for success in battle, or for aid in treating the sick). In front of the tipi the chief's wife loads a travois harnessed to a dog: these elegantly simple constructions consisted of a netted circular platform attached to long poles and were used to transport baggage. A group of three unused travois stand propped to the left of the woman. The chief relaxes against a rolled blanket in the lee of the tipi, shaded from the afternoon sun, bow in hand, watching his wife work. To his left his small son wrestles playfully with one of the other dogs which follow the band. A warrior returns on horse back with news of game or buffalo. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. `David C.         New-Harmony on the Wabash

[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Engraving by Lucas Weber after Bodmer. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) This is one of the greatest landscape images to result from the Bodmer and Prince Maximilian's expedition to America's "Interior Parts." A tranquil view of New Harmony, an important stopping point for the travelers before leaving for the west. On the morning of October 19, 1832, Prince Maximilian hired a wagon in Mount Vernon, Indiana, and set out for New Harmony, located some fifteen miles to the north. He had planned at the outset of his journey to stop at the utopian community to visit the distinguished entomologist Thomas Say, from whom Maximilian hoped to get advice concerning travel in the west. David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion) accompanied the Prince while Bodmer and a recent acquaintance started out on foot. During the weeks that followed, Bodmer made numerous excursions around New Harmony and completed a number of views of the community. Their travels in North America lasted from 1832 to 1834. They arrived in Boston in July 1832, traveled on to Philadelphia, where they stayed with Napoleon Bonaparte's elder brother Joseph. From here they headed west across Pennsylvania across the Alleghenies to Pittsburgh and the Ohio country, visiting all the important German settlements en route. Their most important stop on their route west was at the utopian colony of New Harmony in Indiana. The Prince spent five months there in the company of some of the countries leading scientific men, and studying all the relevant literature on backcountry America. On 24 March 1833, the party reached St. Louis, Missouri, and the start of the journey into Indian country. David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint /Spring 1985, p.18.         Modes et manières d'aujourd'hui. 1922 (dixième année) Fernand Siméon

Corrard Pierre 1922 - UN ÉTAT PARFAIT. UNE PROVENANCE EXCEPTIONNELLE. UN EXEMPLAIRE SANS ÉQUIVALENT. ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION. AN EXCEPTIONAL ORIGIN. AN UNPRECEDENTED COPY. THE WORST JOURNEY IN THE WORLD, ANTARCTIC 1910 - 1913

Constable, London, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good/No Dust Jacket. 1st Edition, 2 volumes;Rare first edition of this Antarctic classic, which includes the 10 panoramic collotype plates that do not appear in later editions. Vol. I, lxiv, 1-300, [4] appendix, 30 plate leaves, (including frontispiece and 2 folding panoramas), 4 maps (3 folding); Vol. II, viii, 301-585, 28 plates leaves (including coloured frontispiece, 8 folding panoramas), 1 folding map. Original blue cloth with gilt titles variation - A71.A1 Rosove (71.A2). The best written and most enduring account of exploits in the Antarctic. - Taurus. A classic - it has been called "The best polar book ever written." At the age of 24, 'Cherry' was one of the youngest members of Scott's Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). This was Scott's second and last expedition to Antarctica. Cherry was initially rejected, but made a second application along with a promise of £1,000 towards the cost of the expedition. Rejected a second time, he made the donation regardless. Struck by this gesture, and at the same time persuaded by Dr. Edward 'Bill' Watson, Scott agreed to take Cherry as assistant biologist. He is acclaimed for his historical account of this expedition... It was perhaps the only real stroke of luck in Scott's ill fated [Terra Nova] expedition that Cherry-Garrard, the one survivor of the winter journey, happened to be able to describe it so effectively that the reader forgets how comfortable he is in his armchair, and remembers the tale with a shiver as if he had been through it himself. - George Bernard Shaw." Cherry-Garrard was warmly commended by Scott for his efficiency and unselfishness as a sledger and tent-mate. In the comparative comfort of life at base, he edited the South Polar Times. Wilson chose Bowers and Cherry-Garrard -- 'the pick of the sledging element' (Scott) -- as his companions for a Winter Journey in 1911 to the rookery of the Emperor Penguin at Cape Crozier, an exploit which is still without parallel in the annals of polar exploration. On their return 5 weeks later, Scott described their journey as 'the hardest that has ever been made' -- a phrase which later suggested to Cherry-Garrard the title of his narrative. The book is widely regarded as the most readable of all the Antarctic literature - it has been suggested that the manuscript was heavily edited by George Bernard Shaw, who was a close family friend of the Cherry-Garrards. Possibly Ex library, evidence of removal of bookplates and red ink stain on rear eps, both volumes, but no other library markings. All 10 panoramas, prints as called for.         Washinga Sahba's Grave on Blackbird's Hills

[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by L. Weber after Bodmer. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) Bodmer, Prince Maximilian and David Dreidoppel were heading up the Missouri River aboard the steamer Yellow Stone. On 5 May they had left Cabanné's post for the abandoned military post of Fort Atkinson in the vicinity of present day Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. On the morning of 7 May 1833 they passed the spot pictured here by Bodmer: the Blackbird Hills, named after a chief of the Omahas who had insisted on being buried in a mound seated upon a mule. As the boat passed by three Indians look on warily, two keep guard on the bank whilst a third waters his horse. The Prince spent five months there in the company of some of the country's leading scientific men, and studying all the relevant literature on backcountry America. On 24 March 1833 the party reached St. Louis, Missouri, and the start of the journey into Indian country. David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint /Spring 1985, p.18.         Cy Comencent Les Chroniques de Jherusalem Abregies [manuscript facsimile of the original Chronicles of the Crusades in the Austrian National Library]

[Vienna, 1922. Folio. (21 x 11 inches). 34 pages, on fine vellum, written in a batarde hand in red and black ink. 2 full-page and 83 half-page, quarter-page, and column width miniatures illuminated in full color and burnished gold, numerous illuminated initials, all within alternating red and blue borders with gold decoration. Original vellum over bevelled oak boards. Housed in a black morocco backed box. Provenance: Ralph C. Runyon (letters by the artist laid in) Astounding manuscript facsimile of a celebrated illuminated manuscript account of the Second Crusade. The Croniques de Jherusalem is among the prized possessions of the Austrian National Library. The richly illuminated codex, of which this manuscript is a painstaking exact copy, was prepared on behalf of Phillip the Good, (also known as Phillip III, Duke of Burgundy) circa 1450. Recent scholarship has attributed the original to the Master of Girart de Rouissillon, naming the codex as among his finest works. Phillip the Good is best remembered for his extravagant court, his taste for luxury and his patronage of the arts. During his reign, some six hundred illuminated manuscripts were commissioned, including the Croniques de Jherusalem. The original manuscript came into possession of Emperor Mathias and was passed down by inheritance to Emperor Max I, being notable enough to be mentioned in the inventory of the Treasury at that time. In the mid-18th century, the codex passed to the Imperial Library, later to be renamed the National Library. In 1922, artist, antiquary and publisher Annete von Eckardt was given permission to copy the famed manuscript, which to that time had not been reproduced. Von Eckardt, perhaps best known for her relationship with Franz Marc, was an extraordinary artist and colourist, as evidenced by this manuscript. In a note laid in, Eckardt describes the two year process by which she accomplished the work: "The original miniatures are shown very rarely and only by exceptional permission. Thanks to the kindness of the Director Herr Smital for two long years of tedious work it was possible to copy leaf by leaf with the aid of a magnifying glass. Again and again every detail of the work was compared with the original, while the precious leaves were kept under a protecting sheet of glass. Great difficulties were produced by the poor light in the library, which being situated in the old in period castle is entirely equipped in the style of the middle ages. Of course to execute the minute work of the miniatures no ordinary water-colours could be used: the lapis lazuli blue, scarlet red, turquois green had to be prepared with the aid of the yellow of eggs, honey, etc. etc. All the gold consists of pure gold and is finished by polishing with an agate style and will never tarnish. Such difficult and tedious copying of precious and antique masterpieces can hardly be expected, if at all, more than once. Therefore, this exquisite work of art, the Chronology of the Crusades, will ever be increasing in value as time goes on." An extraordinary work of art. Cf. Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek, Cod. 2533.

        Original caricature of Sydney Schiff

[ca. 1922]. "The darkness and the flashing eye," [ca. 1922]. Pencil and watercolor on paper. Caricature of Sydney Schiff, 1868-1944, the novelist who published under the name "Stephen Hudson," translator of Proust's A la recherché des temps perdu, patron of writers and artists including T. S. Eliot and Wyndham Lewis, and best remembered perhaps for hosting the famous dinner in Paris on May 18, 1922 to mark the premiere of Stravinsky's ballet, Le renard, attended by Joyce, Picasso, Stravinsky and Proust. Schiff and his wife, Violet - the sister of Wilde's Sphinx, Ada Leverson - were close friends of Max and Florence Beerbohm, providing the Beerbohms a refuge in England at their country house in Abinger during W.W.II. Inscribed with title and "Dearest Sydney Very many thanks. I shall treasure the document - the intensely interesting prophecy, based on so much knowledge of things and said with such keen vision. May you be right! Reading you, I feel that you might be. And then dismal doubts creep in. 'The mills of God,' you say. They do certainly grind slowly. But I don't think the History of the World shows them to be efficient in the long run. If they were, our world wouldn't be what it is! Your ever affectionate Max." Unrecorded in Hart-Davis's catalogue of Beerbohm's caricatures. 25.4 x 20.4 cm. Nicely framed. In fine condition. ORIG/011216.
