Die Bogenränder werden dadurch zwar ungleich, aber das Satzbild steht gerade. Um infolge der ungleichen Ränder ein späteres zu starkes Beschneiden mit der Maschine zu vermeiden, werden die Bogen einzeln, vorne und unten, mit der Pappschere auf ein Mittelmaß rauh beschnitten. Dadurch wird der Druckrand weitestgehend geschont. Als erste und letzte Lage wird dem Buche zum Schutze eine leere Papierlage hinzugefügt, welche mit einem feinen Leinen- oder echten Japanpapierfalz versehen ist. Geheftet wird der Handband nach sorgfältiger Auswahl des Heftzwirnes auf echten erhabenen oder aufgedrehten flachen Bünden und auf Pergamentriemchen (welche beim Pergamentbande durch den Rücken gezogen werden). Bei Dünndruckpapier werden die Lagen zum Heften leicht vorgeritzt. Ein Einsägen oder gar Einraspeln der Bünde findet nicht statt. Oben wird das Buch beschnitten und erhält nicht nur der Schönheit willen Goldschnitt, sondern diese feine Metallschicht schützt vielmehr die dem Lichte und Staub am meisten ausgesetzte Schnittfläche vor deren schädlichen Einflüssen. Die Deckel werden in einem tiefen Falz angesetzt, mit den Bünden nach außen. Ein Herausreißen aus der Decke ist somit nur unter Zuhilfenahme von Werkzeug möglich. Zum Kapital wird kein schlappes maschinengewebtes Bändchen verwendet, sondern das Kapital wird von Hand mit dem Buchblock umstochen, gibt dadurch dem Rücken einen festen Abschluß und bietet zugleich dem späteren Ledereinschlag ("Häubchen") die Unterlage. Als Einbandmaterial kommen sumachgares, lichtechtes Saffian, Kalbleder, vereinzelt auch Rindsleder, ferner naturelles und weißes Schweinsleder sowie Kalbspergament zur Verwendung. Ein mit der Hand hergestelltes, dazupassendes Überzugpapier sowie Handvergoldung oder Blinddruck am Rücken ergänzen das Werk nach außen. Ein solcher Einband entspricht allen Anforderungen, die an einen Gebrauchsband gestellt werden können."         Georges Clémenceau : Voyage aux Etats-Unis (tapuscrits originaux en anglais et en français)

      1922 - Grand et fort in-4° relié demi-chagrin havane clair, dos à cinq nerfs, titre gravé. Paginé 1-152 [4] pages et 150 pages. À l'automne 1922 il part aux États-Unis pour une tournée de conférences, plaidant la cause de la France. Clémenceau s’est retiré de toute occupation politique après l’échec de sa candidature à la présidentielle en janvier 1920. Paul Deschanel l’emporta avec l’appui indirect d’Aristide Briand. De retour le 20 décembre 1922, Clemenceau s’attelle à la rédaction de plusieurs ouvrages : Démosthène, où il peint à la fois l'orateur grec et lui-même ; Grandeur et Misères d’une victoire, où il défend, contre Poincaré et Foch, son action politique de 1917-1919 et évoque le risque du réarmement allemand en raison de l'abandon des garanties du traité de Versailles et de la politique d'apaisement de Briand; et surtout Au soir de la Pensée, un gros ouvrage de réflexion et de philosophie qui va être le but principal de ses vieux jours : il y réfléchit sur l'humanité, les différentes religions et cultures, le progrès, etc. Les deux parties de ce volume, sous forme de tapuscrits originaux sont l’original anglais et la version française.         Pachtüwa-Chtä. An Arrikkara Warrior

      [Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Talbot after Bodmer. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.1 A fine powerful portrait of a proud successful warrior. Bodmer and Prince Maximilian were introduced to this member of the Arikara tribe by Mató-Tópe ( a Mandan chief) in March 1834 whilst they overwintered at Fort Clark. Pachtüwa-Chtä had been a member of a war party that had attacked and killed three traders near the Heart River in 1830. He stands, armed with a gunstock club with a painted metal blade, his head adorned with symbols of his prowess in battle. Although there were many reports of the Arikara (or Arikaree), their hostility towards the whites ensured that they were only rarely encountered by either Bodmer or Maximilian. In return for posing for his portrait Pachtüwa-Chtä asked for a picture of a bear against a forested background which he was probably going to employ as part of his personal medicine as an aid in either hunting or battle. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. `David C. Rare and privately printed account of fishing for swordfish off Montauk Point and the adjacent waters of Block Island. McAleenan was also the author of several sporting memoirs issued in very limited numbers. He has a flair for writing and writes lovingly of this three-week adventure, harpooning swordfish, battling sharks, sighting whales, etc.: "…glad days, cheery companions, and the joy of living…[for] those who have heard the wind in strange places…" (Foreword). This copy is signed by the author and is additionally inscribed by him with a paragraph beginning "Dear George, to you friend of my heart I send this diary of a cruise on as sweet a schooner as ever sailed …" and signed "Joe". From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) An archetypal scene from the American Northern Plains. Bodmer had taken an active part in a Buffalo hunt which took place on 11 October 1833 near Fort Union, as the travelers made their way back down the Missouri from Fort McKenzie to Fort Clarke where they were to overwinter. In the present image four Indians on horseback, armed only with bows and arrows, ride furiously in amongst the scattering herd of buffalo, the foremost figure has just brought down a large animal to his left, but has turned and already notched another arrow to his bow which he sights at another animal in front and to the right. A composite view, the animals are probably sketched from individuals Bodmer recorded during the October hunt. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. David C. Harold Ivan Harding was born in Toronto 29 January 1883 and died at age 60 on 29 December 1943 at Te Puhapa, Mamáo, Tahiti. Entered British Consular Service in China in 1902 and served in various capacities until 1922 when he became Vice-Consul at Kashgar. His mother's family [Grace Elizabeth Lesslie], were related to the distinguished early Toronto booksellers Lesslie & Sons, York (Toronto), Dundas & Kingston (See Hulse).         Autographed Letter Signed as an Aspiring Writer

      1922. unbound. An unknown P. L. Travers, with all the ambitions and desires of becoming a successful writer, sends an exceedingly rare autographed letter to a well-wisher. Signed twice: "Helen Goff." 1 page, 6.5 x 4.75 inches, no place, no date, circa 1922 (she stopped using her real name in 1925), in full: "My dear Mr. Howard, Many thanks for the compliment you have paid me. I trust you will have cause to be very proud of the signature someday which appears on the next page - I am trying hard. With kind regards, and wishes for your success: Sincerely yours, Helen Goff." On the next page she has again signed her given name. Note: In 1924 Helen Goff ended her unsuccessful writing career and began anew under the pen name P. L. Travers. Within a year she would bury her traumatic past along with her real name Helen Goff and recreate an entirely new persona. Nine years later, with the success of Mary Poppins, she would become an international star and nobody would ever remember the failed and traumatic Helen Goff. The 2013 movie "Saving Mr. Banks" is a dramatized story about both the working process during the planning of Mary Poppins and also of Travers' early life, drawing parallels with Mary Poppins and that of the author's childhood. To our knowledge there has never been a prior sale of a letter, document, or photograph signed "Helen Goff." Each book and speaking engagement contract that has survived the test of time is signed "P. L. Travers." All of her personal identification including passports, deeds, bank books, automobile licenses, etc. were also signed "P. L. Travers." Ironically she never filed a formal name-change affidavit in her native Australia. This important literary discovery is worthy of inclusion in the best institution or historical society collection. One natural fold; near fine condition. Australian born British novelist, actress, and journalist who migrated to England and lived most of her adult life there. She is known best for the Mary Poppins series of children's books featuring the magical nanny Mary Poppins.

This "International" issue is accompanied by a separate folio book, 79,[33]pp., printing the text in French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. Like the contents of the main work, it is elegantly printed in red and black on Italian handmade paper. Violet Oakley (June 10, 1874 - February 25, 1961) was a transformative force in the field of American mural painting and a principal affiliate of the Brandywine school of painting and illustration. After studying abroad and a term as a student of Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute, she was commissioned to undertake the murals and stained glass for the Church of All Angels in New York, earning her distinction as America's first professional woman artist. Her political beliefs were shaped by the Quaker William Penn whose ideals she represented in her murals at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, the subject of the present work. She was committed to the principles of pacifism, equality of the races and sexes, economic and social justice, and international government. She lived with two other women artists, and the three were known professionally as the "Red Rose Girls." They were joined by a fourth woman, Henrietta Cozzens, with whom Oakley had a long-term committed relationship, and they collectively adopted a common surname: the 'Cogs' family. When the United States refused to join the League of Nations after the Great War, Oakley went to Geneva, Switzerland, as an informal self- appointed Ambassador and spent three years drawing portraits of the League's delegates. After World War II, Oakley was an early advocate of nuclear disarmament. In terms of format, this work is similar to her 1932 portfolio, LAW TRIUMPHANT.

        Lengthy Autograph Letter Signed with initials, 2 pp on one folio sheet, with fully signed transmittal envelope, Providence, R.I., Octr. 15, 1927

      Very Good. Lovecraft was a voluminous letter writer, especially to fellow writers of fantasy, horror, and weird tales. In particular, he had a lengthy period of correspondence with Clark Ashton Smith. They became friends in 1922 when Lovecraft sent Smith fan letter after his "The Hashish Eater, or The Apocalypse of Evil" was published in "Ebony and Crystal." Smith (1893-1961), the poet, painter and fellow fantasy and horror writer, along with Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft became known as the Triumvirate of "Weird Tales."   This letter was written after Lovecraft had spent a couple of years in New York City and had returned home to Providence. It is a revealing letter in how Lovecraft sees himself through his upbringing in New England and also a letter that refers to many of his friends and colleagues in the world of fantasy and horror fiction.   Lovecraft begins by commenting on Smith's paintings which Smith had sent him. "I certainly did enjoy that shipment of paintings" and further comments on their "distorted shapes of lush, unwholesome, extra-terrestrial vegetation." He mentions that he had not yet sent them on to Dwyer, but wishes that he "had Wandrei's financial resources, so that I might invest in one or two!" He refers here to Donald Wandrei, a writer whose work also appeared in "Weird Tales." Wandrei, a friend and protégé of Lovecraft, was a member of the "Lovecraft Circle," along with Clark Ashton Smith and Frank Belknap Long. Wandrei is also one of the editors of the Selected Letters of Lovecraft.   Commenting on "futility & work," Lovecraft informs his correspondent, "I have come to the comfortably elderly condition of not caring a rap whether I do anything or not! I had really much rather read than write things." Regarding writing, he says, "What I absolutely must have... is a general atmosphere exactly like that of my youth... I did not realise my dependence on these things till I tried living in New York... I discovered that the cosmic & cosmopolitan element in me is the thinnest of veneers, & that I am actually - so far as all the deeper emotions... are concerned - an extremely localized New Englander of the most pronounced type...." He continues, "My ideal is to be an absolutely passive & non-participating spectator to the pageant of meaningless existence...."   Continuing further, he discusses his family. "I simply don't care whether or not I see & talk to anybody except my family. My family don't care for the weird, but they don't object to my caring for it - hence provide an atmosphere of friendly harmony even though they aren't likely to share my ravings anent [sic] Algernon Blackwood or Arthur Machen...." He then presents his upbringing in a "certain kind of old town" in great detail. He comments that these things are "all that spell reality in life to me" and that when he is apart from them, "everything becomes spurious & two-dimensional - vague fragments of a dream...." He concludes this discussion by saying, "That ethereal sense of identity with my own native & hereditary soil & institutions is the one essential condition of intellectual life... which I cannot do without. Like Antaeus of old, my strength depends on repeated contact with the soul of the Mother Earth that bore me."   Lovecraft then mentions "Weird Tales" publisher Farnsworth Wright saying, "Glad you've sent E&C [Ebony & Crystal] to Wright. He is by no means uncultivated or unappreciative personally, despite the bonehead policy he is forced to follow...." When Wright took over publication of "Weird Tales" in 1924, he did not publish many of Lovecraft's stories as Lovecraft had criticized Wright's own writing previously. Also mentioned is Hugh Rankin who was an illustrator for "Weird Tales," his first illustration having been published in 1927. "Glad Rankin has done something... like justice... he is really the best, by far of all the artists whom W.T. [Weird Tales] has ever had...."   The letter ends with a very Lovecraft type rant about a "devilish dental siege" Lovecraft is experiencing and then tells Smith that he will "show you any weird tales of mine as soon as they're written... You have probably received "The Recluse" containing my article. And tells him that "Cook is here...he likes your "Passing of Aphrodite" immensely. It is the first contribution to be accepted for the second issue of The Recluse..."   W. Paul Cook was a printer from Athol, Massachusetts and a publisher of amateur magazines. He published "The Vagrant" which ran from 1918 to 1927 and was a big encourager of Lovecraft submitting stories. His later magazine, "The Recluse," was published in only one issue, in 1927. Lovecraft's "Supernatural Horror in Literature" was published in this issue, along with stories by Smith, Wandrei and others. [See: "The Gernsback Days: A Study of the Evolution of Modern Science Fiction..., by Mike Ashley et al, pp. 115-116.]   Before he signs his initials, he thanks his correspondent for "that nameless head from the black planet, Yadoth." And, in a postscript on the top of the first page, in very Lovecraftian terms, he writes, "that new head has a particular & specific horror. It makes one feel uneasy... when inexplicable occurrences happen...". Paper is darkened with age, with one small hole visible in image slightly affecting text but all words are able to be read.         Photo - Rare Set of Glass Lantern Slides - Sennar Dam Construction

      Sudan, 1922. Sennar, Sudan, 1922-1926. Set of 39 photographic glass lantern slide views illustrating the construction of the Sennar Dam, each numbered and captioned "Sennar Dam" in manuscript. Contained in the four original cardboard boxes bearing the label of London's lantern slide publishers, Ilford Limited. Glass slides measure 8 x 8 cm. Boxes measures 9 x 9 cm. One glass plate cracked though not intrusive to image, otherwise the lot in very good original condition, striking images. The University of Santa Barbara Special Collections holds an album of 16 photographs of the Sennar Dam construction. A rare and spectacular set of lantern slide photographs memorializing one of the largest irrigation projects in the world - the Gezira Scheme - which was conceived and begun by colonial leaders while Sir Reginald Wingate was Governor-General of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Specifically showcasing the construction of the Sennar Dam [Sinnar Dam], these photographs show the magnitude of the project as it was underway. A corroborative English and Sudanese undertaking, labourers painstakingly cut through enormous rocks and toiled in high heat to erect the monumental structure, ultimately creating the cornerstone of the cotton industry which has sustained Sudan's economy ever since. Two images show engineering plans; thirty-seven are photographs of construction in progress. The Sinnar Dam is the oldest dam in Sudan. Still today over half of Sudan's agricultural production is reliant upon the water provided by the dam. Located approximately 300 kilometres south of Khartoum, and only 15 kilometres from Sennar, it is the reservoir that provides irrigation water. The Sennar Dam project was a successful undertaking to support for crop irrigation in the Al Jazirah region, which lies between the Blue Nile and the White Nile. The dam was the cornerstone of the Gezira Scheme, which also involved the creation of a network of canals. The Gezira Scheme was begun by the British while the area was governed as part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Reginald Wingate, then Governor-General of Sudan, had envisioned farmers growing wheat, but the direction was abandoned by colonial authorities for a more lucrative cash crop - cotton. Egyptian-type long staple cotton would be grown, which would provide a raw material for the British textile industry. Cotton had first been grown in the area in 1904. After many experiments with irrigation, 24 square kilometres was put under cultivation in 1914. Initially financed by the Sudan Plantations Syndicate in London, the British government later guaranteed capital to develop and sustain the scheme. Finally, after experiencing the lowest Nile flood in about 2 centuries, the Sennar Dam was constructed on the Blue Nile to provide a reservoir of water. Work on the dam first started in 1914, but was almost immediately interrupted by the outbreak of World War One. Construction began again in 1919, the contractors being the Sudan Construction Company, who carried on the work until 1921, when it became clear that the estimated costs would be considerably exceeded. Further funds were obtained and in 1922 the project continued. By diverting water from the Blue Nile through canals to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers, the completion of the dam in 1925 indeed spurred agricultural activity. Al Jazirah became Sudan's major agricultural region with more than 10,000 square kilometres under cultivation. Designed by Sir Murdoch MacDonald and built by British contractor, S Pearson & Sons Ltd., the structure is approximately 3 kilometres in length. English civil engineer Sir John Watson Gibson OBE (1885-1947) was Pearson's site agent. [Gibson played an instrumental role in the development of the water supply infrastructure in the former British Empire, and also in the design of Mulberry Harbour used in the Normandy landings.] Governor-General of the Sudan, Sir Geoffrey Francis Archer attended the official opening of the dam on January 21, 1926. Archer was enthusiastic about the massive scheme to dam the Blue Nile at Sennar so as to irrigate the Gezira plain for cotton cultivation. He described the plan as the application of "western science to native economic conditions". The project was nationalized by the government in 1950. Cotton production increased in the 1970s, but, as per Governor's Wingate's vision, by the 1990swheat production increased, and has supplanted at least one third of the land formerly seeded with cotton. .         Scalp Dance of the Minatarres

      [Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Ch. Vogel after Bodmer. Small marginal tears not affecting plate area. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.18) An important record of this energetic victory dance, executed by Bodmer during the winter of 1833-1834 when the travelers stayed at Fort Clark on the banks of the upper reaches of Missouri River. The Hidatsa's came to the fort twice to perform their scalp dance, once in February 1834 after a retaliatory raid against the Assiniboins, and again in April after a surprise attack on a Sioux camp. The figure shown center right is Máhchsi-Níhka (`Young War Eagle'), a deaf-mute who had played a prominent part in the raid against the Assiniboins. To the far left is Síh-Sä (`Red Feather'), a Mandan man who had been raised by the factor of Fort Clark, although he still has relatives in the village. The women play a principal role in the dance and have donned military attire, painted their faces like warriors, carried weapons and displayed scalp trophies. Musical accompaniment is provided by the men with the drums and rattles. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. David C.         Peter Whiffle His Life And Works

SIGNED by the author on the front end page: 'Sincerely, Carl Van Vechten.' The Near Fine book is bound in a brown and tan decorative paper over boards binding, with a light tan cloth spine with a paper title label. It is straight, clean and tightly bound with no handwriting or soiling. There are some small, faint tanning spots to the spine cloth. The paper-covered boards have a bit of edgewear to the corners, and the publisher stained black upper page edges has a small scratch and slight fading next to the spine. The price intact original DJ is in Very Good condition. The text on the DJ is intact - surprising since there's a 'lot' of text (front, back and a publisher mailing list form on the back flap). There are narrow edge chips at fold ends ranging in size from 1/4" to 3/4" (the one at the upper back spine fold), a touch of edgewear, and a partially open narrow tear just inside the back flap fold. Where there is no missing material the tears have been stablized by clear tape on the reverse side at some time in the past. There is also mild age toning around the edges of the front/back panels ('much' less toning than it looks like in my scans), plus a couple of small thumb smudges - one each front/back - and a small amount of surface rubbing at the spine ends. The DJ is now protected by removable clear mylar. Unusual to find the 1st printing of this early title author-signed, with or without the 1st printing DJ. ; 7-1/4" x 5-3/8"; 247 pages; Signed by Author .

        The Novels.

      London: J. M. Dent and Sons Ltd.,, 1922. With illustrations by Charles E. Brock. 6 volumes, octavo (180 x 120 mm). Bound for Scroll Club in crushed purple morocco, raised bands, titles to compartments gilt, top edges and turn-ins gilt, purple linen endpapers. Colour frontispiece to each volume, 90 similar plates in all. Spines slightly darkened, margins of text blocks gently toned, light dampstains to top and fore margins of final 3 leaves of Mansfield Park, text block of Emma cracked between half-title and frontispiece but firm. An excellent set. An attractively bound set of the charmingly illustrated novels, first published with Brock's illustrations between 1907 and 1909. C. E. Brock (1870?-1938) first appeared as an illustrator of Jane Austen for Macmillan's 1895-7 series, though he illustrated only Pride and Prejudice, with Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. That series appeared in black and white, which better suited Thomson's skilful use of line. A decade later J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite in colour, and also to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. The colourful costumes and interior decor depicted here are reputedly accurate to the Regency period, as Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.
