        MERTON OF THE MOVIES.

Doubleday, Page, New York 1922 - 8vo. This copy is boldly and calligraphically inscribed: "To Harold Davis with the cordial regards of Harry Leon Wilson. Carmel, Calif. October 1922." Among the most notable of Hollywood novels and cited as such by Lawrence Clark Powell, who regards this title as: "The best of all novels about the movies." Filmed twice (in 1924 and1947) and adapted into a hit Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Marc Connelly shortly after book publication. Fine in a fine, indeed flawless, dust jacket, the likes of which conceivably exists – but go find one. Housed in a quarter morocco slipcase and matching chemise [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Die Blume Anna.

Berlin: Der Sturm,, 1922. Die neue Anna Blume eine Gedichtsammlung aus den Jahren 1918-1922. Octavo, pp. 32. Original pale green printed wrappers. Cover design by Schwitters. Light peripheral toning, small pale stain on back cover, a few smaller dark marks on front cover but an excellent copy. First complete edition of this key work of Dadaism. "'To Anna Blume' was first published in the Berlin periodical Der Sturm in August 1919, following the exhibition of Schwitters's work that had launched Merz [Schwitters's personal form of Dada], at the Der Sturm gallery that July. The poem found itself enormously popular, leading to its inclusion in Anna Blume: Poetry, which was released in two editions (each of 5,000 copies, according to the title pages) later that year and catapulted Schwitters into notoriety. In 1920 'To Anna Blume' was printed as a poster and plastered on the streets of Hannover. The poem was eventually translated into many languages and prompted a variety of responses. In 1922 Steegeman released a third compilation with a generic all-text cover, also titled Anna Blume: Poetry, including 'To Anna Blume' and other writings. Two more collections of Schwitters's poetry and prose, with the name 'Anna Blume' in their titles, were issued the same year, both with cover designs by Schwitters: Die Blume Anna. Die neue Anna Blume eine Gedichtsammlung aus den Jahren 1918-1922, with a constructivist cover, published by Der Sturm, and Memoiren Anna Blumes in Bleie, published by Walter Heinrich, Freiburg. The Anna Blume phenomena further alienated Schwitters from some of the key figures in Berlin Dada, who had recently rejected his request to join Club Dada" (Umland, Sudhalter & Gerson, Dada in the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA 2008, p. 281). Reasonably well represented institutionally but commercially uncommon: Copac locates copies at six British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Senate House, Glasgow, Cambridge, V&A, Leeds); well represented on OCLC.

[COVER DESIGNED BY ALEKSEY REMIZOV] Lalazar. Kavkazskii skaz [i.e. Lalazar. Caucasian Tales]

Berlin: Skify, 1922. 37, [3] pp. 20х14 см. In original illustrated wrappers. Some restoration of the covers, some soiling, Berlin bookshop's stamp on the title page. Otherwise a very good clean copy. First and only separate edition. Very rare. Title pages in Russian and German. Cover design by the author - Russian writer Aleksey Remizov (1877-1957). Marina Tsvetaeva called him «living treasury of the Russian soul and language» as his works were very imaginative. He became famous thanks to his fairy tales which he based on folk tales. It's not widely known that he was also a very talented artist - he used to accompany every letter and note with a drawing. His works were even praised by Pablo Picasso. From his letters we find out about the covers: «The covers came from Easter eggs: we painted them, put paints on the paper - it blurred and flowers came out». Here he also explained the title - spring color 'lalazar'. Remizov was working on series of Caucasian tales in 1914-16 - at that time it was called «Caucasian Prianik» (i.e. Russian cookie). The series was first published as 'Caucasian Folk Tales' in collection with other authors' works titled 'Sredi muria' (Moscow, 1917). This version differed from the final one not only stylistically but also in order of the tales. Later he tried to publish the tales as separate edition in 1919 by the title «Caucasian Churek» (here cookie naturally transformed into Caucasian bread) but it never happened. The similar series he developed during that period was «Siberian Prianik». (Prianik idea started in 1916 when Remizov was participating in charitable collective edition to help children which was called «Prianik for Orphans».) From one of his letters: «How much I dreamed about publishing it in Russia in 1919. Everything was ready and suddenly everything was gone». Only in 1922 after his emigration he published the book in Berlin in its final form.

The Worst Journey in The World:

London: Constable and Company Limited,, 1922. Antarctic 1910?1913. 2 volumes, octavo. Original natural linen-backed pale blue boards, printed paper labels to spines, blue endpapers. Colour frontispieces with tissue-guards, 4 other coloured plates in all, 43 black and white plates, 5 maps, 4 of them folding. Some wear to tips, boards a little discoloured, front hinge of vol. I cracked but holding. A very good set. First edition, in Cherry-Garrard's preferred "Polar" binding of cloth-backed boards. "Cherry-Garrard seems an unlikely hero of Antarctic exploration, but he has achieved that status largely through this book? a young but wealthy patrician, near-sighted and frail, he paid his way onto the crew as an assistant zoologist, but performed splendidly in many harrowing situations" (Books on Ice). The "worst journey" referred to in the title is not "Scott's ill-fated rendezvous with death," but the earlier Ross Island Winter Journey, from Cape Evans to the penguin colony at Cape Crozier, with Edward Wilson and Henry "Birdie" Bowers. Both of his companions on this trip were to die on the Southern Journey with Scott, Cherry-Garrard being with the last group sent back before the final assault on the South Pole, he was also sent to rendezvous with the returning party of Scott and his four companions, and was the discoverer of the tent and their frozen bodies. The set is "widely regarded as the masterpiece of polar exploration."

        Sodome et Gomorrhe II

Nrf, 1922.

"Extremely rare and very large folding map of the railroads of Argentina, dated 1922, with twenty - two inset town plans, edited in Buenos Aires by the famous publishing company "" Jacobo Peuser"" . Compiled and realized by the """"Dirección de tierras, colonización y fomento de los Ferrocarriles del Estado"". It has a significant historical interest due to the fact that it relates to the ""Golden Age"" of railroads in Argentina. In Argentina, the State financed, built, and ran government - own railroads based on recourse to subsidies until the first Yrigoyen administration (1916 - 1922), which introduced changes and shifted the direction of rail policy somewhat. The Ferrocarriles del Estado contributed to the development of science, created a demand for professionals which helped form the professional engineering field, and, by linking the capitals of central and northern provinces, facilitated both communications and scientific tasks themselves, especially research into diseases endemic to the country. Lithograph printed in colors, original outer case, in very good condition. - See more at: http://www.swaen.com/antique - map - of.php?id=16081#sthash.azMIEuTK.dpuf" Buenos Aires Buenos Aires 1590 2820

1922. Lettera autografa ad inchiostro in formato cm.24,8x15,1, compilata solo al recto su 23 righe, su carta intestata "Via Verdi, 4 - Milano" in chiara grafia. ".

Berlin: Der Sturm, 1922 - Octavo, pp. 32. Original pale green printed wrappers. Light peripheral toning, small pale stain on back cover, a few smaller dark marks on front cover but an excellent copy. Cover design by Schwitters. ULYSSES.

Shakespeare & Company 1922 - Large 8vo. One of 750 numbered copies on hand-made paper. Laid into this copy is the original prospectus for the book that prints a photograph of Joyce. Joseph Strick's 1967 film failed at the box office but was a _succes de estime despite its near-impossible task of adapting Joyce's interior prose into cinematic terms. An unrestored copy, easily the finest of this fragile volume that we have ever encountered, merely showing the most niggling of use at the heel of the spine. The blue wrappers that Joyce insisted on precisely echoing the hue of the Greek flag are in fine condition. A collector's copy of the 20th Century's most influential novel.
