Group of Love Letters to Flora Temple Lash, whom he married, with sketches and related ephemera

No Binding. Very Good. 20 letters, 59 pages, several letters illustrated with sketches, letters dated 1922-1941, the bulk from 1923-1924, with 9 pencil and pen sketches, 17 printed and manuscript ephemeral items, including: exhibition lists, catalogs and price lists, Christmas cards designed and printed by the artist, the ephemera dates from 1912-1941, with nine snapshot photographs, plus accompanying negatives. Collection of love letters from Albert Sterner, an academically trained artist, painter, draughtsman and print-maker, who as an older married man, at the age of 60, seems to have fallen hard for the younger Flora Temple Lash. Sterner divorced his first wife and later married Flora. The letters discuss Sterner's artistic life and his relationship with Flora. [March 14, 1923] New York, to Flora Temple Lash, Philadelphia "Darling! If ever in my life I did what I longed not to do it was then when the door closed last night and I left you. I crossed the wet street and looked up at your windows but you were busy - undressing - going in your little bed where but a moment before you had lain beside me. It was heavenly sweet that quiet embrace - It was so close so dear so deep - The silences of it are still in my memory! I got a lower berth on the 1215 and went to bed and stayed there till 7 this morning I slept fitfully - had breakfast at the Pennsylvania Station and got here long before Norah arrived. I have been working on and off at the etching scraping out a large place - it is arduous the cutting of the copper - So I am not sending you a proof till the thing is corrected - and Jules just came with another photograph of your drawing - but it is worse than the other so tomorrow he will do it again. ." [October 1, 1923] New York, to Flora Temple Lash, Philadelphia "Dear Love! I have thought of you all through this day - Now it is night - and I long for you so I might kiss your dear eyes and just hear your lovely voice say "Albert" No one says it like you do, no one! Even over the phone when you are many miles away it bears me to your love - and I love it. I had dinner alone at the Arts Club, for the Players Kitchen is out of commission and we go next door and eat among the old ladies - they are all old ladies there men and women - This morning I printed a beautiful proof from my plate 'the mask' or 'Now Unmask' which title do you prefer. It is really a beautiful proof. I am more & more mad about etching and I find out more wonderful things about it every hour. It is much more precious than lithography and much more difficult and longer to make and so one loves it more. It is more uncertain too and has more mystery. I want you to see this proof, so if you don't come to New York at the end of the week I will bring it to show you and will try to print from your plate reading too. - A mad idea has been in my head of renting my studio and going to stay in Vermont . so I would not have to earn so much money and could go on etching - but it is only an idea and may never materialize. ." [Jan 7 1924] New York to Flora Temple Lash, Philadelphia "Dearest Love! . All this week every evening till Saturday I have to play the little Pirandello Play - and on Monday the 14 - I begin the portrait of Mr. Tyler at Elkins Park. I shall go to Philad. Sunday the other two drawings they ordered are to be done later. Tyler wrote that they loved the boy's portrait. On the 17th I lecture at the Fellowship. Did you get the photographs & get them to Mary Butler? And on the 19th I give my lecture on drawing here at the Anderson ." June 27, 1924, Binghamton, New York to Flora T. Lash, Philadelphia "My Beloved - First how are you? You dear - I hope quite better and feeling allright. I never like to see you suffering. It

The Wonderful Adventures of Little Prince Toofat

New York: The James A McCann Company, 1922. First edition. Very Good. A Good only copy, with minor dampstaining to the lower edge of the boards and several leaves. Minor wear at the spine ends, but complete and unrestored. A very scarce children's book, the first one illustrated by the wonderful Robert Lawson, best known for illustrating "Ferdinand' by Munro Leaf and for writing numerous children's books himself. Lawson won The Caldecott Medal, the Newberry Medal and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, for various works, the only person to win all three. No other first edition copies currently on the market and only one auction record from 2009 which brought over $2,000. (Remember 2009? That's when the bottom dropped out of the housing market and the Dow plunged below 7000). Very Good.

1922. [one of 20 copies signed] A Preface to INTO THE EAST: Notes on Burma and Malaya by Richard Curle. [Edinburgh:] Twenty Copies Privately Printed for Richard Curle, December 1922. Original light blue-grey wrappers. First Edition, being one of only twenty copies, signed by Conrad. This piece, along with THE "TORRENS", are two of the scarcest of all the limited-issue Conrad publications -- as the limitation was so severe. On the half-title of each copy Conrad signed his name and added the date, 1922. This was later collected in the posthumous volume LAST ESSAYS. This is a fine copy (very light ruffling along the fore-edge). Keating 217. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase, with inner chemise which bears the small oval bookplate of the renowned collector Kenyon Starling.

L'uomo, la bestia e la virtù. Apologo in tre atti

      R. Bemporad & Figlio, Editori, Firenze 1922 - Maschere nude volume V. 151 pp. Full brown calf, four raised bands, gilt lettering and decorations on spines. Signed and inscribed by Pirandello "Ad Alessandro Varaldo, fraternamente, Luigi Pirandello." Varaldo was a fellow playwright, novelist and mystery writer: his book Il settebello is considered the first example of Italian detective novel. The tragic satire and savage humor that emerged through the story of a troubled couple disturbed early audiences accustomed to sentimental bourgeois comedy, but the play reveals Pirandello's ability to exaggerate the realms of both apology and farce. Mild foxing to edges, small laceration to the spine, short tear to front cover also along the spine. A pleasing presentation copy. In the Italian language. ; Octavo; Signed by Author.         The Golden Hind. The Golden Hind a Quarterly Magazine of Art and Literature, Volume One, Numbers 1, 2; 3; and 4 ( 1 Bound volume ).

Chapman & Hall October 1922 - July 1923, London - Hardcover. Folio (15 x 11 inches) iv + 48 pp, iv + 40 pp, 40 pp, 40 pp. Original publisher's quarter beige buckram with tan paper-covered boards, with dark- brown title on the front cover, gilt lettering to spine. Front wrappers of each issue bound in. A complete run of the four issues (Numbers 1, 2; 3; and 4, October 1922 - July 1923) which make up the First Volume of the famous Golden Hind literary journal, bound by the publishers into a single volume. Each issue is bound-in with its original printed thick buff paper top wrapper. A sumptuous production, beautifully printed on quality paper. One of a small number of sets issued thus (in hardcover binding) by the publishers. Each issue of The Golden Hind is a mixture of prose, poetry, and artwork, with authors including W. H. Davies, Aldous Huxley, Laurence Houseman, Clifford Bax, Rabidranath Tagore, Havelock Ellis, etc. etc. It also contains around 100 illustrations, pen drawings, lithographs, woodcuts, etc, many of which are full-page, and some double page, by artists including Alastair, Frank Brangwyn, Robert Gibbings, Nora Wright, Jack B. Yeats etc. etc. Perhaps most interestingly the issues contain many illustrations by Austin Osman Spare: No. 1 reproduces pen drawings of his on pp. 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 31 & 32, and a magnificent double page lithograph ('The New Eden') over pages 44-45; No. 2 reproduces a pen drawing on p. 25 and a lithograph on p. 32; No. 3 reproduces a pen drawing on p. 4 and a double page lithograph (untitled) over pages 36-37; and No. 4 reproduces two bookplate designs on pp. 6 -7. Spare was a one-time student of Aleister Crowley's, and without doubt one of the greatest occult artists of the twentieth century, and a friend and mentor to Kenneth Grant. From the collection of the late Robert (Taylor) Agasucci (aka Stafford Stone), artist, graphic designer, book illustrator and aficionado of the work of Austin Osman Spare. The boards are a little marked and darkened, (tea?) splash at fore-edge of upper board, corners of boards rounded and chafed, but binding still very solid, page edges a bit darkened and foxed, owner's name on front blank. The individual issues: the wrappers and their contents have been well protected and are in Near fine condition with just a few scattered spots of browning. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Worst Journey in the World

Constable, 1922. 1st edition. Hardcover. Two volumes, each in buff linen boards, very slightly rubbed, with later red morocco-backed spines. Clean pages throughout, bar a few light spots. Colour frontispieces to each volume. All colour plates, half-tone photographs, maps and panoramas, some folding, are present and correct in both volumes. Very nice marble-patterned slipcase. A really handsome presentation of this classic account of Captain Scott's fateful Terra Nova expedition to Antarctica, by the youngest member of the team. After arriving in McMurdo Sound, Dr Edward Wilson, 'Birdie' Bowers and Cherry-Garrard set off in 1911 to Cape Crozier to retrieve Emperor penguin eggs for scientific study, enduring terrible conditions ('the worst journey'). On their return, Wilson and Bowers joined the expedition to the South Pole, where they died, along with Captain Scott, and were found by Cherry-Garrard and others. Very nice copy of this much sought-after polar memoir.

Mexkemahuastan. Chief of the Gros-ventres de Prairies

[Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by Hürlimann after Bodmer. From the scarce Leipzig edition printed from the original copper-plates. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are more scarce than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint/Spring 85, p.1 Bodmer painted this portrait of Mexkemáuastan (`Stirring Iron'), an Atsina or Gros Ventre chief and medicine man, on about 5 August 1833. The keelboat Flora stopped opposite an Atsina camp at the mouth of the Judith River and was quickly overrun by friendly but insistent Atsinas, including `Stirring Iron'. He gave particular cause for concern because he had threatened to kill David Mitchell (the superintendant of Fort McKenzie) the previous year. However, on this occasion, and later at Fort McKenzie he gave no further cause for concern. Karl Bodmer's images show great versatility and technical virtuosity and give us a uniquely accomplished and detailed picture of a previously little understood (and soon to vanish) way of life. Swiss-born Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867) specifically to provide a record of his travels in North America, principally among the Plains Indians. In the company of David Dreidoppel (Prince Maximilian's servant and hunting companion), their travels in North America were to last from 1832 to 1834. Well-armed with information and advice, the party finally left St.Louis, on the most important stage of their travels, aboard the steamer Yellow Stone on April 10 1833. They proceeded up the treacherous Missouri River along the line of forts established by the American Fur Company. At Bellevue they encountered their first Indians, then went on to make contact with the Sioux tribe, learning of and recording their little known ceremonial dances and powerful pride and dignity. Transferring from the Yellow Stone to another steamer, the Assiniboin, they continued to Fort Clark, visiting there the Mandan, Mintari and Crow tribes, then the Assiniboins at Fort Union, the main base of the American Fur Company. On a necessarily much smaller vessel they journeyed through the extraordinary geological scenery of that section of the Missouri to Fort Mackenzie in Montana, establishing a cautious friendship with the fearsome Blackfeet. From this, the westernmost point reached, it was considered too dangerous to continue and the return journey downstream began. The winter brought its own difficulties and discomforts, but Bodmer was still able to execute numerous studies of villages, dances and especially the people, who were often both intrigued and delighted by his work. The portraits are particularly notable for their capturing of individual personalities, as well as forming a primary account of what were to become virtually lost cultures. `David C. Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier," Imprint /Spring 1985, p.18. Cf.Graff 4648; cf. Howes M443a; cf. Pilling 2521; cf. Sabin 47014; cf. Wagner-Camp 76:1.

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (The A. E. Jackson Edition in Original Dust Jacket and Gift Box)

New York: Doran, 1922. Carroll, Lewis. (Charles L[utwidge] Dodgson). ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. New York: Doran, [1922]. First American Edition, thus. Sixteen full-page hinged plates by A. E. Jackson plus dozens of other line illustrations, vignettes and devices. Pictorial endpapers. A remarkably Fine copy of this large impressive volume in a remarkably Fine Dust Jacket in a Near Fine original box (just slightly worn). Quite the survival, the temptation to call it "as new" is barely resistible. Doran did a series of these silver boxed gift books c. 1922 as made clear by the other titles listed on the flaps; in 1927 Doran merged with Doubleday and it appears their deluxe gift box concept was forever scrapped. All titles in this series appear to be exceedingly rare, even more so in DJ and this is the only boxed example we could find online. A. E. Jackson (1873-1952) is one of the two dozen or so great Golden Age Alice illustrators. He first produced his Alice in 1914 for London publisher Hodder & Stoughton with mounted plates. Truly as much a visual feast as any of the fine Lewis Carroll editions we have in stock.. Decorative Boards. VERY FINE/Very Fine. Illus. by A. E. Jackson. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

The Worst Journey in the World. Antarctic 1910-1913.

London: Constable & Co 1922 - London: Constable & Co. 1922. First edition. Rare first edition of this Antarctic classic, which includes the 10 panoramic collotype plates that do not appear in later editions. 2 volumes, large 8vo, lxiv, 300pp, (4) appendix, 30 ills & 4 maps (&) viii, 301-585pp, 28 ills & 1 map. Recent black half morocco, raised bands and gilt titles, marbled paper boards, new end papers, fore-edges and lower edges uncut to volume 2. This is a first-person account of Scott's last Antarctic Expedition from 1910-13. Hearing of Scott's proposed 2nd expedition, Cherry-Garrard volunteered his services to Dr. Wilson, whom he had met previously. "In an expedition every member of which was a specialist, he was accepted by Scott on Wilson's recommendation alone & duly enlisted as 'assistant zoologist’". Yet from the outset, despite his youth and inexperience, he won the affectionate regard of his more seasoned comrades, and before the close of the expedition had more sledge-journeys to his credit than any other surviving member. Cherry-Garrard was warmly commended by Scott for his efficiency and unselfishness as a sledger and tent-mate. In the comparative comfort of life at base, he edited the South Polar Times. Wilson chose Bowers and Cherry-Garrard “the pick of the sledging element” (Scott) as his companions for a Winter Journey in 1911 to the rookery of the Emperor Penguin at Cape Crozier, an exploit which is still without parallel in the annals of polar exploration. On their return 5 weeks later, Scott described their journey as “the hardest that has ever been made” a phrase which later suggested to Cherry-Garrard the title of his narrative. The book is widely regarded as the most readable of all the Antarctic literature - it has been suggested that the manuscript was heavily edited by George Bernard Shaw, who was a close family friend of the Cherry-Garrards. An increasingly difficult book to find in a first edition. Condition Report Externally Spine – very good condition. Joints – very good condition. Corners – very good condition.         Hamlet Prince of Denmark

1922. John Austen's HamletSpecially Bound by Susan AllixA Remarkable and Innovative DesignAUSTEN, John, illustrator. ALLIX, Susan, binder. SHAKESPEARE, William. Hamlet, Prince of Demark. With Decorations by John Austen. London: Selwyn & Blount Ltd, [1922]. One of sixty copies signed by John Austen (this being no. 13) and with an additional title-page. Large quarto (11 5/8 x 9 1/8 inches; 295 x 233 mm.). [i, half-title], [ii, limitation], [iii, additional title] [iv, blank], [1]-175, [1, imprint] pp. Illustrated throughout with striking black & white illustrations including 2 title-pages, half-title, 14 full page, 3 half page, 13 quarter page and 137 vignettes. Original front and rear decorated end-papers bound in.Bound by Susan Allix (completed 2010) in a special designer binding of full black goatskin, front and back covers with several rectangular panels of various other leathers including suede and crocodile. Upper cover with an inset panel containing an abstract red and black painting on a silver background depicting' blood and chaos', set under glass, and a mounted branch-like 'chain of shapes' silver strip. Smooth spine decoratively lettered in blind, sculptured pink liners, hand-made 'abtract design' end-leaves, top edge gilt, others uncut. Original front and rear decorated end-papers bound in with "Binding by Susan Allix / for Denis Collins. / Completed October 2010" written in ink on front free end-paper. Housed in the original black cloth clamshell case, white lettering label on spine. A very fine copy in a unique and wonderful designer binding.Considered by many to be John Austen's (1886-1948) finest piece of book illustration. The style is very much in the vein of Aubrey Beardsley with hints of Harry Clarke and Hans Henning Voight, aka Alastair)."Hamlet is a tragedy; tragedies are dark so the ambience of the binding as it presents itself is dark. Yet it is a play shot through with flashes of light that reveal our situations, ourselves, the sharp arrows of fortune that lead to lines of consequences. This is suggested by the silver piece that I made by reworking silver left from other projects into a chain of shapes. The variations of black leather (the shiny ones with distinct scale patterns are crocodile) may be seen as the formal shifts from one act to another. When the play is read, not acted, the scene-changing can be less dramatic, more meditative. The glass panel represents the action and drama, excitements of reason, blood, and a contrast to the inaction of the black rectangles. The glass, with paint and background colour, has been scratched and sandpapered into some sort of chaos. The intention of the binding is to create an atmosphere, or introduction to the work inside, I did not want to quarrel with, or remake, the illustrations, nor give personal interpretations. And, as for the play, what could I do to that, being a thing (almost) immortal? Perhaps try to suggest that inside, the book is thrillingly serious." (Susan Allix).Susan Allix - frequently cited as 'the greatest bookmaker of her generation' - often creates limited editions from her private press with original prints, letterpress printing and hand-binding. Since establishing her own press she has created a series of fifty works that have been exhibited internationally, featured in the collections of the National Art Library; the V&A; the British Library; The Hague; the Library of Congress; Harvard and the New York Public Library, among others.

7 rare offprints from Michael F. Guyer including the 1900 Spermatogenesis of Normal and Hybrid Pigeons

Various, 1900-1922 - 7 rare offprints including the important Spermatogenesis of Normal and Hybrid Pigeons which Guyer wrote to Thomas H. Morgan in 1910 "First I should like to call your attention to the inclosed clipping from an article of mine which appearedin the ZOOLOGICAL BULLETIN, II, 5 for 1899. At a glance you can see that it deals essentially with what we now call the Mendelian phenomena although at that time, of course, Mendelism had not yethad it's renaissance. At the time the article was published I had not figured out the Mendelian ration of 3 to 1, although I was aware that there were more brown than white birds among the grand-decensants. The point I want to make, however, is that in this return to grand-parental types I had a definite problem in mind which I was seeking a solution."* Two of the offprints are Compliments of the Author, with one signed in full. One has the ownership signature of Sewall Wright. The Guyer/Morgan letter can be found in our blog. List of offprints available. Quality, Value, Experience.
