How I Trade and Invest in Stocks and Bonds: Being some methods evolved and adopted during my thirty-three years experience in Wall Street

The Magazine of Wall Street 1922 - 1st Edition (1922) . Recenly rebound in black leather with gilt lettering No marks or writing observed in text. Damp stain on front end paper and half title page. This rebound rare title will easily last another 100 years+.a . . . . . . Richard Wyckoff was a Wall Street legend. Not only did he make a fortune, but he also was the longtime editor and publisher of The Magazine of Wall Street and the developer of successful methods to analyze and forecast the market. In this book, originally published in 1922, Wyckoff lays out his insider's knowledge for everyone, especially those who are willing to study before risking one's own money. After all, he wrote, 'in Wall Street as anywhere else, the chief essential is common sense, coupled with study and practical experience.' He covers topics such as the six rules he's found helpful, why he adopted Harriman's principle, what he looks for before buying a bond, the earmarks of a desirable investment, the importance of knowing who owns a stock, and how to recognize manipulation in the market. . . . . . . . . 'Virtually everything written after Livermore and Wyckoff are variations on themes developed by these two men. Wyckoff was among the first to explain the accumulation-distribution cycle (which makes stock and market timing possible) and to develop the use of 'surrogates', self-made indexes which consist of a handful of leading stocks in a group (such as semiconductors), which warn the investor of impending moves, and which enable the investor to filter out all the noise of broadcasters, publishers, newsletters, message boards, and chat rooms. Understand Wyckoff and you'll understand the engine that drives stocks and markets rather than be distracted by the genuine imitation wood trim and the smell of the leather seats.' -- dbphoenix [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        A Hasty Bunch

[Paris: Printed in Dijon by Maurice Darantière for Contact Publishing Co.], [1922]. 8vo. 288pp. Original printed French-folded wrappers, uncut and unopened. A beautiful, fresh copy with only a few areas of palest discoloration along the spine. FIRST EDITION, one of approximately 300 copies privately printed of McAlmon's second book (preceded by a collection of poetry) and the first book issued by his own Contact Publishing Co. This copy includes the broadside "From an h'English Printer to an English Publisher" laid-in. The Dijon printer Maurice Darantière printed this shortly before he completed work on Joyce's 'Ulysses.' McAlmon had assisted Joyce in the typing of the manuscript for that novel, reordering some of the material in the Penelope episode due to difficulties in interpreting Joyce's handwriting. Born in the American midwest, McAlmon expatriated to Paris where he was closely allied with Joyce, Stein, Hemingway, Williams, and many other Modernists. His publishing company published Hemingway's first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems, among other highlights of the period. In his memoir, McAlmon recalled that Joyce said these stories reminded him of his own 'Dubliners' and suggested the title 'A Hasty Bunch' "because he found my American use of language racy" (p.33). The gay story "A Boy's Discovery" is among the more sexually explicit.

[Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing in New York State 1915-1923

Near Fine. Oblong octavo. String tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" stamped in blind on the top board. Modest edgewear on the boards, near fine. Contains 141 mostly sepia-tone gelatin silver photographs. Images are various sizes ranging mostly between 2" x 3" and 3" x 3.5", with several larger, mostly mounted between three and six to the page and largely captioned. Some modest fading on some of the images, one with a touch of damage, but most are near fine or better. A well-photographed album of rural images, the first page devoted to prize cattle (a few other images of cattle and horses appear) but about half of the images are devoted to hunting, trapping, and fishing in the Adirondacks, mostly between 1922 and 1923, with a few others from earlier dates. The hunting images show catches of fish, fox, skunks, muskrats, deer, mink, as well as gun-toting men, and several of hunting dogs (all it seems named "Uncas"). Most of the rest of the album is devoted to images of attractive and cheerful younger people on boats or on trips in automobiles, mostly to rural areas (with Uncas present!). An engaging, interesting, and largely subject specific group of images.

The Wonderful Adventures of Little Prince Toofat

The James A. McCann Company, New York 1922 - 4to, (10 1/2 x 12 1/8"), blue-grey gilt and pictorial cloth. Each page of text has pale green line illustrations by Lawson. There are pictorial headpieces done in black, decorative initials, pictorial endpapers plus 6 incredibly fanciful color plates that are rich in color and in detail. The rear board is stained with loss of surface sheen; the half-title is hand-colored; there is a neat ownership name on the reverse of the first plate, followed by a lengthy pencil note on apparently an unrelated issue. First edition of an exceedingly scarce children's book, this is a fantasy tale about Little Prince Toofat and Himself who travel to the fairy land of Looking Glass. First serialized in the Delineator and subsequently published as a book, Lawson reportedly was not proud of this magical work which "shows the influence of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson so evident in Lawson's later illustrations " (Gardner: Robert Lawson on My Shelves p.9). Overall a very good copy of Lawson's first book, his rarest and most elusive. Younger List of 100 Important Children's Books, 1922. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        MY TRIP ABROAD

Harper & Brothers (1922), New York & London - A very early, if not first, printing with no date on the title page and the code "B-W" on the copyright page indicating publication in February 1922. Chaplin's account of what Europe did to the world's most popular movie actor, illustrated with photographs. This copy bears a scarce SIGNED INSCRIPTION by the author on the recto of the frontispiece photograph: "To my dear old pal/Billy. Hoping you will/have a little fun/browsing through this/Charlie Chaplin/Feb. 24th 1922." Books signed by Chaplin, especially of such an early date when he was at the height of his popularity, are quite scarce. We have handled only one other signed copy of this book in over twenty years and it was inscribed in June, 1922. The pictorial boards for this book are almost always quite worn and the dust jacket hardly ever present.         The Wheel of Fortune

Madras: Ganesh & Co, 1922. 8vo (7 x 5 inches). xiii, [2], 160pp. Half-title. One illustration of a spinning wheel, or charka, on p.[156]. Publisher's original Khadar cloth printed in turquoise on the upper and lower boards. A near-fine copy, the binding tight with minor bumping at the extremities and toning of the spine, one small pale stain on front cover. FIRST EDITION, first printing. With an appreciation by Dwijendranath Tagore entitled "Dawn of a New Era": "Let critics of Mahatma Gandhi then look to History before they condemn him for trying to bring this much belauded Modern Civilisation down to the common starting point of all great civilisations. We are at the dawn of a New Era, and Mahatma Gandhi is the one leader who shows us the right path..." This is Gandhi's fourth, and perhaps scarcest, book, published in the year of his arrest, trial, and conviction for sedition (resulting in a six-year prison sentence). Gandhi promotes the spinning wheel - the wheel of the title and illustrated on the cover - as a means to break from British rule. The production of cloth as the path to gain independence is referenced in the very binding of the book, which reads "Clothed in Khadar" on the front and boldly urges readers to "USE KHADAR" on the back: "Mahatma Gandhi writes from the Sabarmati Jail: 'I am indifferent to whatever else the country may do, so long as the cause of the Khadi and the Charka is well looked after. It must be clearly understood that there is no salvation for us until the Khadar programme is completely worked." The Swadeshi movement, backing Nationalist politicians and boycotting foreign cloth, attracted Gandhi and his anti-industrialization cause. Gandhi started spinning his own cloth, encouraged others to do so, and made it obligatory for all members of the Indian National Congress to spin cotton and pay their dues in yarn. "For Gandhi the post-colonial self could not be forged in a clear-cut instant by simply negating the colonizing other: independence, self-determination were not so much ready-made states of being and mind as a self-creating process on the part of the colonized - a struggle to awaken new capabilities and qualities in themselves no less than in the colonizer... Gandhi grounds the search in homespun - the 'rudimentary' mode of textile-making, but something not out of people's reach, even the poor. They, above all, would need to experience through spinning and weaving a sense of what it might mean to do things for themselves, to stand on their own feet. Gandhi put great store on it as a practical-symbolic mode of shaking off the sense of dependency, for grasping the idea that deliverance from colonial subjugation lay at their own hands... (Sarat Maharaj, "Arachne's Genre: Towards Inter-Cultural Studies in Textiles," in: Journal of Design History, v.4, n.2 [1991], p.88). The text collects many of Gandhi's essays, including "Boycott of Goods vs. Non-co-operation Programme", "Indian Economics", "How to Boycott Foreign Cloth", "The Music of the Spinning Wheel", "Hand-spinning and Hand-weaving", "A Plea for Spinning", "The Doctrine of Charka", "The Charka in the Gita", "Spinning as Famine Relief", and "A Model Weaving School". A fine copy of a scarce book.

London's UndergrounD. Map of the Electric Railways of London.

1922 - London: Dangerfield Printing Company for Electric Railway House, 1922. 280 x 340mm. A map of the London underground rail network, marked '1-3-22' on reverse, so published over a decade before the operating companies were amalgamated as 'London Transport'. It shows the stations with more geographic accuracy than the iconic design of Henry C. Beck of 1933. The style of the map is influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement: the script used for the station names is particularly striking. Leslie MacDonald Gill (1884-1947), younger brother of Eric Gill, specialised in graphic design in the Arts and Crafts style. His most important commission was from the Imperial War Graves Commission, designing the script used on Commission headstones and war memorials, including the 'Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme'. He produced a number of maps, two of which appeared in the British Museum exhibition 'Magnificent Maps in 2010: 'The Wonderground Map of London' (1914) & 'Tea Revives the World' (1940).

Etiquette In Society, In Business, and At Home

Funk and Wagnalls, New York 1922 - 1st edition of "the blue book of social usage" with a superficially sappy but largely affirmative impact on modern life, suggesting throughout, that today's pervasive attraction to lights and commotion are not social instincts. Rubs to cloth at the extremities else fine in a jacket with tears and chips to the edges and folds, internal strengthening to the folds, and a darkened spine, else very good. This 1st printing is scarce in dustjacket and mostly unsung as such, since there are always copies for sale, but they typically lack their jackets or turn out to be later printings. Etiquette means behaving a little better than is absolutely necessary. It is using hypocrisy as a tool for carving out felicity, so we pretend to be polite, practice it, and eventually we, in fact, become polite (fake it 'til you make it), and Post's book organizes and elucidates 1,000 ways to do so. The text has been reworked and modernized many times to track changing lifestyles, but our book is the original, wide ranging enough to include the still useful (and pragmatic) guidelines of how to write a thank you note, or make an introduction, or walk the streets, and additionally the less useful (but more amusing) counsel on the responsibilities of a parlor maid, or how to manipulate a finger bowl, or how to address a Duke. I suspect you can open it to any page for an entertaining 10 minute read, and though it's overladen with affected demands for groundless civilities, it's always so prudent that the inch and a half it will take on your shelf will prove worth the space whenever you crave diversion, and also as a vaccination against collector's focus acquiring the deadening effect of habit. Pure Americana baby. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
