      1922. Hi, This lot is a 1922 Original Hardback Wisden in OK Condition, 1922s do not come in very good very often and there are nicer condition 1922s out there but this one is special as it is a presentation Wisden, it is signed by the Editor Sydney H Pardon to Caine (future editor) on the title page. So condition, first off the gilt is bright to front and spine , the boards however are dark and marked and there is a lot of wear between the spine cloth and the front/back boards. Inside the hinges are strong but some yellow coming away to the front hinge. A bit grubby inside but not too bad. Great Photoplate. Sticker to first page.

Signed by author on preface in bold black ink and by illustrator on frontispiece. 322 pp. Original gilt-ruled half vellum and orange cloth with leather spine label lettered in gilt, gilt top stain, marbled endpapers. Very Good, lacking jacket, with heavy foxing to edges and occasionally, much lighter, to text. Vellum lightly scuffed and soiled, cloth pulling away a bit from it, as is typical. A deluxe limited edition of the first fantasy novel by Lord Dunsany (Edward J.M.D. Plunkett). It was titled Don Rodriguez: Chronicles of Shadow Valley in its American trade edition.

A near-fine copy, the binding tight with minor bumping at the extremities and toning of the spine, one small pale stain on front cover. FIRST EDITION, first printing. With an appreciation by Dwijendranath Tagore entitled "Dawn of a New Era": "Let critics of Mahatma Gandhi then look to History before they condemn him for trying to bring this much belauded Modern Civilisation down to the common starting point of all great civilisations. We are at the dawn of a New Era, and Mahatma Gandhi is the one leader who shows us the right path..." This is Gandhi's fourth, and perhaps scarcest, book, published in the year of his arrest, trial, and conviction for sedition (resulting in a six-year prison sentence). Gandhi promotes the spinning wheel - the wheel of the title and illustrated on the cover - as a means to break from British rule. The production of cloth as the path to gain independence is referenced in the very binding of the book, which reads "Clothed in Khadar" on the front and boldly urges readers to "USE KHADAR" on the back: "Mahatma Gandhi writes from the Sabarmati Jail: 'I am indifferent to whatever else the country may do, so long as the cause of the Khadi and the Charka is well looked after. It must be clearly understood that there is no salvation for us until the Khadar programme is completely worked." The Swadeshi movement, backing Nationalist politicians and boycotting foreign cloth, attracted Gandhi and his anti-industrialization cause. Gandhi started spinning his own cloth, encouraged others to do so, and made it obligatory for all members of the Indian National Congress to spin cotton and pay their dues in yarn. "For Gandhi the post-colonial self could not be forged in a clear-cut instant by simply negating the colonizing other: independence, self-determination were not so much ready-made states of being and mind as a self-creating process on the part of the colonized - a struggle to awaken new capabilities and qualities in themselves no less than in the colonizer... Gandhi grounds the search in homespun - the 'rudimentary' mode of textile-making, but something not out of people's reach, even the poor. They, above all, would need to experience through spinning and weaving a sense of what it might mean to do things for themselves, to stand on their own feet. Gandhi put great store on it as a practical-symbolic mode of shaking off the sense of dependency, for grasping the idea that deliverance from colonial subjugation lay at their own hands...         Etiquette In Society, In Business, and At Home

      Funk and Wagnalls, New York 1922 - 1st edition of "the blue book of social usage" with a superficially sappy but largely affirmative impact on modern life, suggesting throughout, that today's pervasive attraction to lights and commotion are not social instincts. Rubs to cloth at the extremities else fine in a jacket with tears and chips to the edges and folds, internal strengthening to the folds, and a darkened spine, else very good. This 1st printing is scarce in dustjacket and mostly unsung as such, since there are always copies for sale, but they typically lack their jackets or turn out to be later printings. Etiquette means behaving a little better than is absolutely necessary. It is using hypocrisy as a tool for carving out felicity, so we pretend to be polite, practice it, and eventually we, in fact, become polite (fake it 'til you make it), and Post's book organizes and elucidates 1,000 ways to do so. The text has been reworked and modernized many times to track changing lifestyles, but our book is the original, wide ranging enough to include the still useful (and pragmatic) guidelines of how to write a thank you note, or make an introduction, or walk the streets, and additionally the less useful (but more amusing) counsel on the responsibilities of a parlor maid, or how to manipulate a finger bowl, or how to address a Duke. I suspect you can open it to any page for an entertaining 10 minute read, and though it's overladen with affected demands for groundless civilities, it's always so prudent that the inch and a half it will take on your shelf will prove worth the space whenever you crave diversion, and also as a vaccination against collector's focus acquiring the deadening effect of habit.         The Velveteen Rabbit

      George H. Doran Co., New York and William Heinemann, London 1922 - First U.S. edition of one of the most enduring children's books written in the 20th century. (The U.S. edition differs from the British edition, as George H. Doran appears on the title page). 19 pages, unpaginated. Illustrated by William Nicholson with color pictorial endpapers with seven richly colored full page lithographs, three are double page spreads. NOTE: A you can see from the pictures, this copy has many flaws, but all of the beautiful illustrations are present; the text is complete and the binding is solid. That being said there is significant foxing throughout; half of the front cover has been peeled off and a 4" piece peeled off the back cover. The title on the spine is present, but there is wear to the spine. Previous owner's name, address and date, appears in ink on the half title page. The boards are a little bend but not badly.         Places: 7 Prints From Woodblocks Designed and Engraved by Paul Nash.

      William Heinemann. 1922 - Limited edition; 4to; original cloth backed boards with the first print repeated on the front cover. Signed by Nash, this being number 47 of 55 copies on japon paper with designs printed directly from the woodblocks. Places is unique among Nash's illustrated books for, apart from the printing it is entirely his own work. He wrote the 'prose poems' designed the cover, title page and illustrations and the text is printed in a facsimile of his hand writing. Claire Colvin writes that 'Places is a very private book; all the locations are ones which Nash had a very strong personal involvement'. This example is preserved in the rare original box covered in paper design by Nash, large printed label on upper cover, one joint neatly repaire. Fine a lovely copy, with a bump to one corner.         La Revue Anarchiste. Paraissant tous les mois [Run of 21 issues, 1922-24]

      Paris: Revue Anarchiste, 1922. First Edition. Paperback. Significant and well-preserved run of the most important French inter-war anarchist journal, founded and edited by the prominent libertarian propagandist Sébastien Faure (1858-1942). Faure's career as an anarchist began as early as the 1880s, when he collaborated with Louise Michel to found the seminal anarchist review, La Libertaire. Among his other close associates were Peter Kropotkin and Vsevolod Eikhenbaum (aka "Voline"). La Revue Anarchiste was intended as a sort of clearing-house for news and articles of the worldwide Anarchist movement. In addition to being a good source for Faure's own writings, contributors to the current run of issues read like a virtual who's-who of prominent anarchist intellectuals of the period, including Voline; Augustine Souchy; Emma Goldman; Rudolf Rocker, and a host of authors writing under pseudonyms such as "Une Revoltée," "Mauricius," "Véber," etc. The woodcut-illustrated covers are all signed with the monogram "AC", unidentified by us but possibly the French anarchist poet André Colomer. Original issues of La Revue Anarchiste are uncommon; substantial runs still more so. Publication ceased in 1925, after 35 issues, and very few U.S. institutions hold even partial runs (OCLC suggests only three locations in North America as of August 2017). Twenty-one quarto issues in original pictorial wrappers. Run includes 21 of the first 28 numbers issued, as follows: nos. 1-3; 5-6; 8-11; 13-17; 20-24; 27,28. Condition uniformly Good to Very Good; all issues solidly bound in original wrappers, slightly soiled and creased but with no losses, markings, or tears. Text entirely in French.

Very small printed label of second-hand bookseller Halloway and Porter is affixed to lower inside corner of front pastedown.       New York: The James A. McCann Company, 1922. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Illustrations by Robert Lawson.. 4to, (10 1/2 x 12 1/8"), blue-grey gilt and pictorial cloth. Each page of text has pale green line illustrations by Lawson. There are pictorial headpieces done in black, decorative initials, pictorial endpapers plus 6 incredibly fanciful color plates that are rich in color and in detail. The rear board is stained with loss of surface sheen; the half-title is hand-colored; there is a neat ownership name on the reverse of the first plate, followed by a lengthy pencil note on apparently an unrelated issue. First edition of an exceedingly scarce children's book, this is a fantasy tale about Little Prince Toofat and Himself who travel to the fairy land of Looking Glass. First serialized in the Delineator and subsequently published as a book, Lawson reportedly was not proud of this magical work which "shows the influence of Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson so evident in Lawson's later illustrations " (Gardner: Robert Lawson on My Shelves p.9). Overall a very good copy of Lawson's first book, his rarest and most elusive.         [Military][Navy][Travel] Photo Album Depicting Navy Man's Worldwide Tours

      Seemingly Everywhere. 1922-1925. 7” x 11”. String-tied black cloth over flexible card. 142 pages pages with 490 black and white photographs inserted into corner mounts. Most photos measure from 2½” x 3½” to 3” x 5” and all but 14 are captioned. Additionally, 16 pages of typescript bound in before the photos + Epsel's Navy identification card and discharge papers. Album good, because it lacks its front cover and has heavy edge wear; otherwise near fine with near fine or better photos, though some are faded; three photos lacking. An immense photo album detailing a sailor's exploits on three long cruises in the early 1920s. Henry Epsel spent many months at sea and was rarely without a camera. The album starts with his typescript timeline that provides dates, places and short notes of experiences such as in September 1922 when his group participated in getting tens of thousands of refugees out of Smyrna. He loved Australia, writing, “most wonderful welcome and reception ever received by sailors. Beautiful women and girls are plenty here. We were forced into company of girls at all times. Most everything free. It did not pay for us to get drunk as we lost out on too much of good times. ”With the exception of Russia, he took photos of nearly every place he visited including Beirut, Jaffa, England, Holland, Cuba, the Panama Canal, California, Athens, Constantinople and more. There are moving images of makeshift cemeteries at Gallipoli and quite a few street shots in many of the cities. We see worshipers at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, ruins at Balbak, Syria, and ships filled with refugees. A self proclaimed ladies' man, there's a number of photos of the beauties Epsel left on land including “Rotterdam Special”, “my Dutch girl” and “my Spanish queen. ”While this is more a travel album than a military one there's well over 100 photos of ships and maneuvers as well as life aboard his ships.         The Waste Land [Criterion Vol. I, no. I]

      London: Criterion, 1922. First Edition. wrappers. Very good. 1st appearance anywhere, in any form, of the iconic modernist poem, preceding all others, in The Criterion (Vol. I, no. I), a quarterly Literary magazine founded and edited by Eliot himself, primarily for the purpose of publishing The Waste Land. Original 2 color printed wrappers, a small skinned patch, frayed at the overlapping edges, light foxing, a little dusty, but still very good, nice for this book. Something of an association copy. Ex-Ruth Wadsworth Porter (her signature on the cover), the wife of James Foster Porter, and mother of Fairfield and Eliot Porter, T. S. Eliot's (2nd?) cousins, so it's not irrational (considering the relation) to propose that our copy of The Criterion may have been a gift from T.S. Eliot himself. Or not. The Waste Land first appeared in this periodical in early October, but follow the progressive history as it unfolded. The second appearance (the first in the U. S.) was in the Nov. 1922 issue of The Dial magazine (actually issued later in Oct.). In Dec. 1922, The Waste Land was first published as a book (in New York) by Boni and Liveright (1,000 copies), adding the author's notes, and as part of their agreement, The Dial bought 350 copies of Boni and Liveright's book, being 70% of the copies that have long been singled out as the book's 1st binding and 1st issue (calculated as 500 by their numbering). And then, in Sept. 1923, along came the first U. K. book edition (The Hogarth Press, 450 copies). Now forget all that. Our Criterion is the original, The Waste Land's first glimpse of the light, a genesis so overflowing with significance, that it being offered at such a sensible price, brings us to contrasts so absurd, that they're even noticed by the mentally unemployed, and I say that thoroughly sterilized of even perfunctory regret. And its amply scarce with only 1 copy of it listed in the auction record for the last 10 years ($3,250 hammer in 2006), that copy described as being in 3 pieces with its wrappers detached (you can look it up in the tornography), and I can tell you that it was more unlikeable than someone who sets a wet glass on your favorite book.

Loose as issued in original coloured pictorial wrappers by Barbier, original glassine, housed in grey clamshell box with orange morocco lettering piece; glassine for 1922 partly perished. A complete set of this exquisite series displaying fashion in magnificent and imaginative illustrations. The series includes Barbier's depiction of the seven deadly sins (in the volume for 1925). Here one finds a great theme of the Western iconographical tradition at home in Barbier's special world. 'Anger' shows a modish couple quarelling in a formal garden; 'Envy' is displayed by a maid regarding her mistress as she steps from a Rolls Royce; and 'Gluttony' is depicted as a gourmandise. Falbalas et fanfreluches was the last of Barbier's books to reflect contemporary life. Its special value lies in the unique way in which it catches the tone and mood of les années vingts. Very good. 1st edition, 1st issue of 750 copies (the first ones on Feb. 2nd), before the 100 on Dutch paper (Feb. 13th) and the 150 on large paper (Mar. 4th). Original printed paper wrappers, rebacked, one corner, one edge flap, and 5 blank page corners repaired, rear endpaper restored, little chips along the edges, else good condition, complete, and we're being precise, and other depictions are suspiciously vague. 1st editions of Ulysses for what we're asking are gone. The cheapest equivalents start at twice our price and go up from there, and the only thing 4 generations of "1st thus" reprints share in common is declining demand, but a new generation of readers is on the rise. They've heard it's the supreme modernist novel and industrial strength psychological realism, and they're told it was condemned as scandalous erotica, in the days when safe sex meant a padded headboard, and they've read it was stoutly suppressed by authorities fearful of any novel portraying chastity as an unlit lamp, or adult abstinence as malnutrition. But millennials don't care what squares thought about sex 95 years ago, or that from the 1940s to the 1970s Ulysses' meaning was mused upon as a cypher in some language twins teach each other. They just face it as a long and arduous 732 page, 265,000 word legacy, a test of focus, set in turn of the century Dublin, and only worth the effort because it recaptures life in a signally fascinating time and place. So the motivation for reading Ulysses has been protean in each generation, but it always stayed the best of its type, and that flexibility of appeal is the profile of conscious art. Let's try to narrow the gap between you and James Joyce. Here he is on the moon: "Her antiquity in preceding and surviving succeeding tellurian generations: her nocturnal predominance: her satellitic dependence: her luminary reflection: her constancy under all her phases, rising and setting by her appointed times, waxing and waning: the forced invariability of her aspect: her indeterminate response to inaffirmative interrogation: her potency over effluent and refluent waters: her power to enamour, to mortify, to invest with beauty, to render insane, to incite to and aid delinquency: the tranquil inscrutability of her visage: the terribility of her isolated dominant resplendent propinquity: her omens of tempest and of calm: the stimulation of her light, her motion and her presence: the admonition of her craters, her arid seas, her silence: her splendour, when visible: her attraction, when invisible." -Ulysses Ready to read it? Here's a boost. Don't hesitate. Proceed aggressively. If your comprehension lapses-even for pages at a time-it's better to push on seeing as you're going to get lost in the random flux, where things encountered early are not explained until much later, so you'll have to reread it anyway.
