Very Good. An Excellent Oliver Waterman Larkin Archive containing a collection of material by and concerning Pulitzer Prize Winner Oliver Larkin, Author of "Art and Life in America": Including the Telegram awarding the Pulitzer, 2 Manuscript Stories with original illustrations by Larkin (many of which are signed by him, Larkin's original 1922 Italy sketch book, original letters to Larkin by notable persons, and more. The Archive e includes: (i) A handwritten copy of "The Adventures of Columbine" inscribed "To Columbine Herself O.W.L.", being a large-format (15" x 12") handwritten tale, dated 1919, 22 pages and with several pages of costume drawings done by Larkin in color pencils (pages are loose); (ii) a handwritten 20-page copy of Francis Hopkinson's poem "The Battle of the Kegs" with original signed illustrations by Oliver Larkin which copy, and as far as we can tell, being unpublished in this form; (iii) 1919 52-page handwritten report (with text on the rectos only) by Oliver Waterman Larkin dated 1918 and titled "The Influence of the Medieval Mystery Play Upon Contemporary Art", a work presumably written by Larkin while he was at Harvard and containing a number of pencil sketches by Larkin of classical themes; (iv) a 60-page sketchbook, about 2/3 filled with pencil sketches and drawings by Oliver Larkin (presumably while in Italy) with the notation at front that it was purchased in Italy by Larkin in 1922 and with his address while there (c/o American Express in Firenze), the sketches being mostly of an architectural and landscape nature, as well of presumably local individuals who caught Larkin's eye as interesting or noteworthy and occasionally humorous - most of the drawings are identified. Two of the rear pages contain some notations on Larkin's travel itinerary and expenses. Larkin's talent as an artist is here very evident as he captures the essence of the Italian country and cityscapes succinctly and accurately; (v) the Original Western Union telegram addressed to Prof. Oliver W. Larkin at Northampton Massachusetts dated May 1, 1950 from Grayson L. Kirk Provost of Columbia University stating "On Behalf of President Eisenhower I have the honor to advise that University Trustees have Awarded the Pulitzer Prize to Art and Life in America for Distinguished Book on History"; (vi) congratulatory letters from Herman Baron, Director of ACA Gallery New York (vii) a copy of a letter sent to Francis Brown Editor of the New York Times by Lloyd Goodrich Assoc. Morse Sits for his Portrait at Locust Grove" dated 1961; (xix) a copy of "The Heart of a Clown" repertory play, with the ownership signature of Ruth Lily McIntire, who later became O. Larkin's wife; (xx) a copy of Bill Baird's "L'art des Marionettes" with a flyer for "The Oliver Larkin Puppets Program" affixed to the front pastedown and giving the details of the same, and with the inscription of performers "From the Admirateurs of "Lark" and Georgie Shaw" signed by performers on the front free endpaper and dated April 1970, just months before Larkin's death. The condition of most items in the Archive is about Very Good overall, with some edge wear and soiling to the older materials. The contents of the original works and letters are very good. An Excellent Archive of interesting material relating to the life and creative activities of one of America's most important educators and proponents of art, including a goodly number of original sketches and drawings by Oliver Waterman Larkin (1896-1970), the notable American art historian and educator.

        Fregate "La Serieuse"

1922 - VIGNY, Alfred de. La Frégate "La Sérieuse," ou la Plainte du Capitaine. Poème. Paris: René Kieffer (Ducros, Lefèvre et Colas), (1922). Tall octavo, publisher's deluxe full green morocco gilt, embossed cover illustration, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $1500.Fine limited edition, number 18 of only 550 copies (one of only 50 on Japanese paper), of this melancholy poem on the fate of the French frigate "La Sérieuse," which was dismasted and sunk by Nelson's British fleet in the "Battle of the Nile," with 14 illustrations (four full-page) by Pierre Falké, colored en pochoir. This copy includes a second suite of sepia illustrations bound at the rear.In January 1798 the French gathered an army and substantial fleet in the Mediterranean port of Toulon. It was apparent to the British that Napoleon planned to invade somewhere on the coast of the Mediterranean, but it was not clear where. "By Nelson's assessment, which proved correct, Napoleon intended to take Malta and then invade the Turkish Khediveate of Egypt, providing support to Tipoo Sultan in his fight with the British in India and restoring French influence in that sub-continent. The government in London and the East India Company panicked at the prospect". Nelson's fleet set sail for Egypt". to find Alexandria filled with French transport vessels, when the signal was flown "˜Enemy in sight.' The search for the French Fleet was over; Nelson's ships cleared for action" (. In the ensuing "Battle of the Nile," engaged in Aboukir Bay, Napoleon's Fleet was completely overwhelmed. Of its 13 ships of the line and four frigates, one ship had sunk ("La Sérieuse"), two ships were burned and nine ships captured. It was arguably one of the most decisive battles in the history of naval warfare. Illustrated by maritime specialist Pierre Falké, this poem by de Vigny memorializes that resounding loss. Bookplate. Gift inscription in pencil. Kieffer's bookseller ticket.A fine copy, with the spine slightly toned. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Remembrance of Things Past

1922 - PROUST, Marcel. Remembrance of Things Past. London: Chatto & Windus / Knopf, 1922-31. Eleven volumes. Original blue cloth, uncut and mostly unopened; original dust jacket (Volume II of Within a Budding Grove). $9200.First edition in English of Proust's masterpiece. Issued over a number of years by two different publishers, complete sets are quite rare.In a February 1908 letter Proust mentioned wanting to "start a rather long work." Fourteen years and some two million words later, in February of 1922, he wrote, "A la recherche du temps perdu is scarcely beginning." Proust died nine months later, still in the midst of revisions and additions. Of his magnum opus he said, "I have tried to put all my philosophy into it, to make all my `music' resonate." Cocteau described the work as "a giant miniature, full of mirages." In a contemporary review Maurice Rostand said Proust "comes to us speaking the language he alone speaks and which he has created himself to express his soul". and this masterpiece, at once so lucid and so mysterious, in which he has found the means to express what seems inexpressible, say what seems unsayable "" it is a soul under guise of a book" (Hayman, 274, 489, 387). This set consists of all first editions in English save for Cities of the Plain, first translated in 1927, here represented by the 1929 limited edition (this copy number 767 of 2230 copies); the 1927 edition of Cities of the Plain was published in New York and is not uniform with the English editions, making this combination much preferred. The final volume, Time Regained, the only volume translated by Stephen Hudson, is number 8 of a limited first edition of 1300. Without the very scarce dust jackets for 10 of the 11 volumes. The Romance Literatures III:515. Connolly 23. Contemporary owner signature.Interiors fine, with a bit of scattered foxing in first volume of Swann's Way and The Captive only. Publisher's cloth fine and beautiful; toning and wear to spine of rare dust jacket for Volume II of Within A Budding Grove. A rare set in exceptional condition.         Printer's advertisement for Ulysses

1922 - (BEACH, Sylvia) JOYCE, James. Printer's advertisement for Ulysses. Paris: Shakespeare and Company, circa 1931. Single printed sheet, measuring 5-1/2 by 5 inches. $13,500.Original Shakespeare and Company printer's advertisement for the works of James Joyce, annotated at length on the verso by Sylvia Beach listing the publication and availability of the first three parts of Finnegans Wake while still under the working title Works in Progress. After working seven years on Ulysses, Joyce, desperate to find a publisher, turned to Sylvia Beach of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. "Within a month of the publication, the first printing of Ulysses was practically sold out, and within a year Joyce had become a well-known literary figure" (de Grazia, 27). From that point forward, Beach represented Joyce and his work in nearly every capacity, " facing down outraged critics, legal rulings and printers who refused to take on Joyce's work" (British Library). This printer's advertisement reflects Beach's lifelong commitment to promoting Joyce's work, including through the writing of Finnegans Wake, seen here when it was still Work in Progress. The lengthy notations cover the verso and are entirely in Beach's hand: "1st fragment of 'Work in Progress' published in New York by Crosby Gage 1928 Anna Livia Plurabelle (from part I) 650 copies all signed. 2nd fragment Tales Told of Shem & Shaun (from part II) The Black Sun Press, Paris 1929. 3rd fragment Babou & Kahane, Paris 1930 Haveth Childers Everywhere from part III. Parts I and III and a small section of part II of Work in Progress appeared in the review Transition Nos 1-8 and III to 15." Interestingly, Finnegans Wake led to the undoing of Beach and her bookshop. Shakespeare and Company "closed in December 1941, when a Nazi officer threatened to confiscate the stock of the bookshop if Sylvia did not sell him her only copy of the novel" (Fitch, 393). Beach had endured a downturn in business, hiding her stock from the Nazis, the deaths of her husband and James Joyce. Ultimately, she could not endure the perversion of Joyce's legacy. This printer's advertisement represents the twilight years of Joyce's brilliant career, before he succumbed to illness and disability, when the possibilities of Finnegans Wake, still unfinished, seemed limitless and Sylvia Beach had no reason to believe her reign as the most powerful literary figure in Paris would ever end. Small repricing overlay reading "Frs. 12" on recto. Printed telephone number on recto crossed out with new number neatly stamped below. Two annotations in an unknown hand: [below Ulysses] "in paper covers cloth binding" and [below Pomes Penyeach] "(out of print)."About-fine condition.         American Individualism; A Timely Message to the American People

Doubleday, Page and Co, New York 1922 - INSCRIBED "With Kind / Regards of / Herbert Hoover" on front endpaper. 4.87" x 7,25" pp. 72. Sun fading at the spine and small chipping at top and bottom of DJ. Written by Hoover when he was Secretary of Commerce during the Coolidge administration. This treatise demonstrates the future Presidents prescient transformation from an industrialist to a politician. "We cannot ever afford to rest at ease in the comfortable assumption that right ideas always prevail by some virtue of their own. In the long run they do. But there can be and there have been periods of centuries when the world slumped back toward darkness merely because great masses of men became impregnated with wrong ideas and wrong social philosophies."         The Five Jars

London: Edward Arnold, 1922. - FIRST EDITION. 8vo. pp. 172, with 7 full page illustrations by Gilbert James. Publisher's orange cloth, with titles printed in black. Internally clean and bright. Sharp and tight, essentially a fine copy with some spotting to the page edges and a trifle of bumping and shelfwear. In a very sharp, clean example of the scarce dustwrapper, one significant corner of loss to the upper right front panel, repaired at some point, otherwise minor wear and chipping to the extremities and some pale pink staining and discolouration to the outer edge of the rear panel. Strong, handsome and very seldom seen. Ostensibly a children's book from this distinguished and highly influential writer of chilling stories of the supernatural, this is the collection of stories that James would have read aloud in his rooms to some of his charges at Eton School, including fledgling wordsmiths George Orwell and Ian Fleming.         50 Songs (First Edition)

Redding, CT: C.E. Ives, 1922. First Edition. First Edition. A self-published volume of songs by Charles Ives, selected from a volume published earlier the same year, titled "114 Songs." Like "114 Songs," this was printed for distribution among the composer's friends, and judging from the small number of copies in world libraries (OCLC locates 12 libraries with copies, whereas 106 are listed with copies of "114 Songs"), it must surely have had a much smaller printing. A selection of "folk songs" by Ives, many dedicated to the work of literary greats of the generation that preceded him (Shelley, Wordsworth, Goethe, Longfellow). Characteristically, simple melody lines are played against a complex and sometimes argumentative accompaniment. Very Good in tan paper-covered boards, with a brown quarter-binding, moderately worn at the corners, brief spotting to the front board, and a touch of wear to the paper spine label, firm and clean overall. Contemporary owner name in fountain pen at the top right corner of the front board and the front endpaper.

Sibilla poema drammatico in quattro atti.

1922. Milano, L'Eroica, 1922. Axs

Autograph Letter to Prunieres, Lamenting a Missed Meeting with Bartok

      - Neatly penned autograph letter, one page, 5 x 6.5, no date but postmarked April 6, 1922. Addressed on the reverse in Dukas's own hand to Henri Prunières and signed "Paul Dukas." The letter apologizes for missing a visit from the addressee and from "Monsieur Béla Bartok, whose acquaintance I would have been delighted to make. All the more so since I must respond to your kind invitation for Saturday. I have to be in Valenciennes on Sunday to help with the concert of the Societé du Conservatoire there. And if I don't take the train at 5:10 in the evening on Saturday, I will have to get up at 6:30 to leave on Sunday morning! So in this case despite all my regrets, I must excuse myself." A scarce and rather charming letter from the French composer, critic, scholar and teacher best known for his "L'apprenti sorcier "(The Sorcerer's Apprentice) and his opera "Ariane et Barbe-bleue."Bartok's 1922 visit to Paris was part of a larger concert tour of Britain, France, and Germany, ending with the premieres of Bluebeard's Castle and The Wooden Prince on 13 May in Frankfurt. In Paris, he met important French composers including Francis Poulenc and Erik Satie. The Saturday soirée to which Dukas refers would have taken place just after an occasion recalled by Poulenc: "I remember a strange lunch, on [Saturday] 8 April 1922, where Bartok and Satie met at my house for the first and last time. Like two birds who do not sing the same tune, Bartok and Satie observed each other with suspicion and maintained an overwhelming silence that Auric and I tried in vain to break. For me it is an extraordinary and symbolic memory." (Quoted in Entrancing Muse: A Documented Biography of Francis Poulenc, p. 113.)Henri Prunières (1861-1942) was a French musicologist, and international propagandist of contemporary art in various forms: music, dance, painting etc. He occupies, especially in music, an important place in the art world between the wars. His major contribution was La Revue musicale, a monthly musical periodical which he founded in 1920 and left in 1939.

      - Berlin; Verlag der Sturm, [1922/1923]. 22,5x15,5 cm. First ediiton. 32 pp. Original printed wrappers. Housed in chemise and a grey card slipcase with a maroon leather-label on spine. Spine and margins of wrappers are slightly faded. There is a slight nick at the top corner on pp. 29-32 and on rear wrapper. Contents are a bit toned, as should be expected. A fine copy. With a laid-in gift card, stating that Gerard and Peggy Bonnier received the book as a Christmas present in 1976. Schwitters (1887-1948), German artist and writer, closely connected to the Dada movement, never as a member but closely linked to some of its members. He termed his personal form of Dada, Merz, and published his first book, the Anna Blume. Dichtungen, in 1919. The book was an immediate success but did also arouse public aversion. He continued using the name Anna Blume in poems and collages, and its meaning has been much discussed, though never settled. The present book is a mix of typographical poems, sound poetry, dialogues, cut-up technique, a few short prose texts and a picture-poem (Gesetztes Bildgedicht) in which capital vowels and consonants are arranged within squares. Schwitters?s pioneering and experimental approach to different art forms has had a significant influence on 20th century literature and art. Wilpert/Gühring 5. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
