[Hilyat al-fursân wa-shi'âr ash-shuj'ân]. La Parure des Cavaliers et l'Insigne des Preux. Texte arabe. Paris, Librairie Orientaliste Paul Geuthner, 1922-1924.

1922. Large 8vo. (2), IV, 98, (6) pp. (4), XV, (1), 502, (2) pp. With 23 photo illustrations and 11 drawings (some in colour) on plates. Original printed wrappers (rebacked) and original illustrated coloured wrappers, both bound within uniform modern half calf. First printed edition of the "Hilyat al-fursân wa-shi'âr ash-shuj'ân", an abridgement of Ibn Hudhail's horse treatise, prepared around 1400. In facsimile throughout. Includes the first French edition of the same. "Ibn Hudhail flourished at Granada under the reign of Muhammad V (king from 1350 to 1362) who ordered him to write a treatise on jihâd [...] The treatise contains two parts of which the first deals with the military art and the second, with hippiatry. Now, some time later, under the rule of Muhammad VI, King of Granada from 1392 to c. 1408, a second treatise was composed which was largely an abbreviated copy of the second part of the first one [... Mercier's] French translation [of this treatise] is a very valuable contribution to our knowledge of Muslim civilization [...] The editor has apparently made deep study of many other Arabic treatises of the same kind, from the earliest ones down to very modern ones [...] This enables him to add much information of Muslim origin in the footnotes and appendixes, and this to give the reader some knowledge of the hippiatric literature available in Arabic [...] The sixth and last appendix is probably the most interesting, being a historical sketch of Muslim hippiatry throughout the ages. This is followed by an abundant bibliography, which forms a very valuable supplement to the enormous hippiatric bibliography recently published by General Mennessier de la Lance: it is not restricted to European publications but contains as well a long list of Arabic works [...] Mr. Mercier's studies are of special interest to students of the Arabic language and of Muslim culture. To show their cultural importance it will suffice to recall that the horse is almost a sacred animal in Islam. The Prophet clearly expressed the divine will with regard to this [...] Historians of science must know of these studies" (George Sarton, in: Isis, Vol. 8, No. 2 [May 1926], p. 346-349). - Finely bound, untrimmed copy, very clean throughout. Boyd/P. 62. OCLC 51776280.

SIBILLA. Poema drammatico in quattro atti.

L'Eroica, Milano 1922 - Prima edizione. Cm.30,5x24,7. Esemplare in barbe. Tiratura limitata di 1333 esemplari numerati. Esemplare n°864. Stampa nell'Officina Fratelli Magnani di Pescia. Esemplare firmato dall'Autore e dall'editore (Ettore Cozzani) e dall'Autore. Nastro segnapagina in stoffa. Splendido e raro. > Servolini, 735-736.         The Mark - ISSUES 1-12 Ccomplete Set Bound and Signed By John Hargrave

Kibbo Kift, Wealdstone 1922 - Kibbo Kift The organisation was founded by the charismatic Englishman John Hargrave (aka 'White Fox'), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after World War I. Hargrave was promptly expelled from the Scouts by Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell. With a small group of like-minded, dissident, anti-war Scoutmasters and Scoutmistresses under his own direct leadership, he set about building an alternative and very different movement. Baden-Powell expelled Hargrave with extreme reluctance, and only after some wealthy backers had threatened to withdraw funding from the Scouts unless he was expelled. The Kibbo Kift (archaic Kentish dialect for 'proof of great strength'[2]) has been described as 'the only genuine English national movement of modern times' and was certainly very different from Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Based on the woodcraft principles of naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes. The ideas of world peace and the regeneration of urban man through the open-air life replaced the nationalism and militarism Hargrave had detested in the post-World War I Scouts. Kinsmen and women were organised in Clans, Tribes and Lodges. Each individual took a 'woodcraft name', inspired by their ideas of 'Indian-style' names. The correct costume had to be hand-made by each individual or 'rooftree' (family group) and while the everyday 'habit' of Saxon hood, jerkin, shorts and long cloak must have seemed outlandish enough in the English countryside of the early 1920s; for ceremonial occasions, brilliantly coloured surcoats or silk-embroidered robes were worn by the various office-holders such as the Tallykeeper, Campswarden, Ritesmaster and Gleeman. Hargrave himself was 'Head Man' and his leadership was dynamic, inspirational and frankly autocratic. The Mark of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift is typical of the symbolism that can be seen in many of their designs. Its meaning is: Worship (The K sign) Forever (the Circle of Unity and Eternity) Life (the Flame) through Knowledge (the Tree). Or again, ‘Worship Life Forever with Knowledge’. The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise. The weekend 'Tribal' Camps and the great annual 'Althing' were marked by colourful and impressive ritual, inspired by their ideas of what Native American ceremonies might be like, but couched in language reminiscent of the Norse Sagas and rich in Saxon archaisms. Kinsmen were not only required to make their own lightweight, one-man hiking tents (the first seen in England) but to decorate them with vivid, symbolic designs of their own devising. Influenced by Hargrave's own artistic taste, an ultra-modern 'futurist' style of design became general, and the robes, regalia, tents and other items of decorative art, often of an extremely high standard, represent an extraordinary 'democratisation' of the avant-garde art of the day. The Kibbo Kift were never more than a few hundred strong. Kinsmen and Kinswomen included the Suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mary Neal and May Billinghurst, the journalist Henry Nevinson, the photographer Angus McBean, and Ruth Clark. The Advisory Committee included Havelock Ellis, Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, H. G. Wells and Professor Julian Huxley. D. H. Lawrence took an interest in the Kindred and it has been suggested that Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover is based on an archetypal Kinsman. The growth of the Kibbo Kift was not without its setbacks. In 1924, the South London co-operative lodges challenged Hargrave's leadership, and seceded from the movement. They established their own organisation, The Woodcraft Folk, which [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Das Buch der Tänze.

Schahin-Verlag, München 1922 - 40 S., 1 Blatt. Orig.-Broschur. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

1922. 1 p. (42 lines). 8vo. Mounted on cardboard. A working manuscript, comprising three 14-line stanzas, written in dark brown ink, with autograph title ("Die Bürger, die Künstler und der Narr"), containing a number of deletions, corrections and revisions. [...]". - First published in 1922 in "Worte in Versen" vol. VI. - Slightly spotty.

1922. 6 text volumes and 1 atlas. 35,5 x 26 cm; atlas 54 x 36,5 cm. 29; 62; 53; 29; 32; 89; 80 pp. With a total of 185 plates in the text volumes, 22 plates in the atlas volume, mostly in black and white, some in colour, and numerous illustrations in text. Uniform decorated brown cloth. Reprint of a work on archeology in China, published in the years 1922-1933, written by the German orientalist and archaeologist Albert von Le Coq (1860-1930). From 1902 to 1914, Le Coq led three of the four German expeditions to the Turfan (or Turpan) area, in Xingjian, China. The expeditions were initiated by the German archaeologist Albert Grünwedel. "The principal spoils of these expeditions were literary. Vast numbers of Chinese manuscripts were obtained from every center, both secular and religious. ... Besides securing manuscripts, these expeditions examined caves decorated with stucco figures and with frescoes..." (Couling). The text gives a brief history of the expeditions, the different sites they excavated, including grottoes and temples, which are also shown on some of the smaller illustrations, followed by descriptions of the objects shown on the plates. "The civilization thus revealed is a mixture of Persian, Indian, Chinese, Hellenic etc." (Couling). Both Grünwedel and Le Coq went back to Berlin with thousands of artefacts, of which many are shown in the plates. The second volume, titled Die Manichaeischen Miniaturen, deals with fragments of illuminated manuscripts, the other volumes deal mainly with either sculpture, mural paintings or frescoes and their techniques. The fourth expedition ended early due to the outbreak of the First World War, but compared to the earlier expeditions they collected the most artefacts during this short stay. - All volumes in very good condition. Cf. Couling, pp. 32, 578.

Francis Picabia et Germaine Everling. Lettre autographe signée. S. l., [1922].

1922. 1 page in-4.

Zweig MS. 167) verwahrte Gedicht "XXXVIII. Del greco di Simonide". Vgl. Matuschek, Zauber der Schrift, S. 268, Nr. 453.
