CAPEK, KAREL. - [COINING THE WORD "ROBOT"]
- Praze (Prague), Aventinum, 1920. Bound in a contemporary green half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding a bit simple, but fine. Internally very nice and clean. Scarce first edition of the seminal work that coined the term "robot", introduced it to the English language - and all other languages - and to science fiction. The work constitutes a cornerstone of 20th century literature and a landmark work of science fiction. The work was first published, as it is here, in Prague, 1920, in the original Czech, bearing the English subtitle "Rossum's Universal Robots". The play premiered on January 25 1921 and became an immediate success. By 1923, it had been translated into thirty languages. The work was hugely influential from the very beginning, and today science fiction is scarcely imaginable without this groundbreaking work. Introducing the word "robot", Capek displaced older words such as "automaton" or "android" in languages around the world. The word is derived from the Czech "robota", which means forced labour of the kind that serfs had to perform on their masters' lands - "robota" again is derived from the Czech word "rab", which mean "slave". The name "Rossum" is an allusion to the Czech word "rozum", which means "reason", "wisdom", "intellect" or the like. In "R.U.R" a scientist discovers the secret of creating humanlike machines that are more precise and reliable than human beings, and a factory is set up, making these artificial people - robots - from synthetic organic matter. The robots are not made of metal, but of living flesh and blood and resemble the mod … [Click Below for Full Description]

A "Zionism handbook" published by the British Foreign Office created to educate British Delegates to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. "In the spring of 1917 the Foreign Office, in connexion with the preparation which they were making for the work of the Peace Conference, established a special section whose duty it should be to provide the British Delegates to the Peace Conference with information in the most convenient form - geographical, economic, historical, social, religious, and political - respecting the different countries, districts, islands, &c., with which they might have to deal. In addition, volumes were prepared on certain general subjects, mostly of an historical nature, concerning which it appeared that a special study would be useful." This work was originally published for internal use of British diplomats, as part of a large series of books on the various regions and colonies. Towards 1920, as "the Peace Conference nearly completed its task" these series were issued for public use. Contents include: a chronological summary of Zionism, starting in 720 B.C.; Zionism in the bible; Zionism under the various rulers of the Holy Land; anti-Semitism and modern Zionism; and other chapters. The last chapter contains statements and speculations in regards to "The Future of Palestine", in reference to the Balfour declaration. Wallis, H.R.
London: Government of Uganda, 1920. Second. Hardcover. VG+. 316 pp, ill. Large folding map in rear. History of the protectorate, then describes all the provinces individually. Anthropology, zoology, woods & forests, botany, the Great War in Uganda, missions and more. Also has an appendix with a bibliography and the game ordinance. The book is vg+ but it goes have the stamps of the Kensington Public libraries. However, looking at and through the book, it seems like no one ever referred to it. It would seem that most of the copies were intended to be sent to Africa because there is a note in the back that the book was bound with materials that would render the book impervious to the ravages of insects. That is also likely why it is so scarce.

Arturo Toscanini
Milan, New York etc: NBC, etc, 1920 Book. Very Good. No Binding. [100 photos] Substantial collection of vintage photographs of the Italian-American conductor, Arturo Toscanini. In a variety of formats, many of the photographs with press stamps and annotations to the verso explaining the circumstances of the images. Toscanini is shown on and off the podium, travelling to Capri in 1929, arriving in New York City; with friends, family and dignitaries, on tour at home, indefatigable and finally 'laying in state' in 1957. Some of the most moving photographs come from a sequence of smaller images showing the maestro rehearsing in old age, taken from behind the orchestra as the old man studies his score and exhorts his players to ever great efforts. Toscanini's long career brought him to a worldwide audience especially after the NBC Symphony Orchestra was created as a vehicle for his talents in 1937. This collection conveys some sense of the range and scope of a remarkable life. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more details..

Noguchi, Yone
Orientalia, New York, 1920. A very handsome, signed Limited Edition (500 copies) volume of 50 poems, size: 5" by 7.5", unpaginated with decorative hand-sewn thread binding and patterned paper wrappers, contained within a blue folding cloth board, with printed paper label, and closed with two white bone clasps. 2nd edition. **** Yonejiro Noguchi (1875-1947) was the first Japanese writer to publish both in English and Japanese, including poetry, literary criticism, journalism and diary-like novels. He published under the first name Yone in his English works. This is the second edition of the first book of poems he published in English in 1897. He was a well-educated Japanese immigrant to the San Francisco area in the 1890's, and was influenced by the bohemian circle of artists and writers living there, finding vocation as a poet even as he worked as a domestic servant to survive. He was said to have significantly interpreted the two cultures to one another at a time before the onset of the Second World War. His later conversion from liberal socialist to nationalist apologist is a contentious issue among scholars of his works.(Cipris, The Asia-Pacific Journal, Nov. 2007) As an artist, however, he travelled and lectured widely on the haiku form of poetry. First, extensively within the United States, where his ideas influenced modernist writers such as Ezra Pound. Travelling to England, he lectured at Oxford, and came into contact with William Michael Rossetti, William Butler Yeats, Thomas Hardy and Laurence Houseman. He returned to Japan, via Berlin and Moscow, in 1904 and cont … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original tan cloth binding is moderately to heavily soiled and rubbed, with minor fraying to the spine extremities, and minor bumping to the corners. No dustjacket, but protected in custom stiff archival mylar. Signed and inscribed by the author on the front endpaper "Only the sinner knows that there is no sin [signed] Clarence Darrow To Chas Mason Chicago Oct 13th 1920." Inscribed to Bishop Charles Harrison Mason, founder of the Church of God in Christ, the largest Pentecostal church denomination and one of the largest predominantly African-American Christian denominations in the United States. Reprint edition of Darrow's only novel, first published in 1905 by Fox, Duffield & Company. The inner hinges are weakened; many pages have small spots of soiling or staining, and a few pages have tiny tears or creases or other small and minor defects. Several pages with pencil notes that are initialed "JSH." The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) developed a file on C.H. Mason because of his pacifism and interracialism. In 1918 some white followers of Mason in Los Angeles were identified as being of German extraction. Mason was jailed at Lexington, Mississippi, for allegedly preaching against the war, although he sold bonds to help the war efforts. William B. Holt, one of the white brethren targeted by the FBI for suspicion, was a lawyer and former Nazarene preacher who traveled to Lexington to post a two-thousand dollar cash bond for Mason's release. BULGARIA.)
London: His Majesty's Stationery Office, [1920] - Octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine. Pencilled ownership inscription of "Robbins" on front free endpaper. Spine sunned, a little shaken, back inner hinge split but sound. A very good copy. 10 monochrome plates, 6 maps (3 folding coloured). First edition, decidedly uncommon: Copac locates only one copy (Imperial War Museum) in British and Irish institutional libraries, OCLC records no copies and KVK only that at the National Library of Australia. The maps include a large folding map of Bulgaria (showing road and rail routes, annotated in pencil with the names of towns and with a note in the top margin: "Code 1920:") and two of the important port of Dedeagach (now Alexandroupoli in Greece) - ceded to Greece after the defeat of Bulgaria in the Great War. An excellent composition and example of the charm and skill he had at conveying a visual message.

A RARE and very lovely composition shows a Chinese coolie in Hong Kong, with a bamboo basket of chrysanthemums carried on his left hip. He wears a bamboo hat and holds a red and white Dahlia in his right hand and looks up at would-be buyers. Identical to a luggage label for a similar hotel in Hong Kong of the same period. This example does not have his usual signature in the lower left corner as other identical examples do. Never-the-less obviously an excellent Dan Sweeney" work of art.

DAN SWEENEY: BOOK ILLUSTRATOR & HOTEL LUGGAGE LABEL ARTISTS: Sweeney was an American illustrator, book illustrator, art deco artist, who also designed art nouveau hotel luggage labels, he worked 1920-1930's.
