1920. DONALD MENNIE CHINA NORTH & SOUTH A Series of Vandyk Photogravures Illustrating the Picturesque Aspect of Chinese Life and Surroundings Published by A. S. Watson & Co. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

EINSTEIN, Albert
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1920. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1920. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered in blind. With 8 pages of inserted advertisements. Portrait frontispiece of author by Hermann Struck, diagrams, figures and equations in text. Spine faded, spine ends bumped and a little frayed, tips slightly worn, mark to front board, front inner hinge cracked but holding, rear hinge starting, contents slightly foxed. A good copy. First edition in English, first impression, translated from the third German edition (1918) by Robert W. Lawson. This is the first appearance of any of Einstein's works in English. The additional chapter (Appendix III) written by Einstein for this edition was added at Lawson's urging, who thought the book would be more accessible if its author could provide a proof of the general theory. Einstein intended the book to be intelligible to the general public, which he tested by reading drafts to his step-daughter Margot, "pausing frequently to ask whether she indeed got it" (Isaacson). Chicago, IL: Privately Printed for the Friends of Walter M. Hill, Christmas 1920. [Crime fiction] FIRST EDITION. Slim octavo (20 x 15cm), pp.39; [1], blank. Bound in publisher's mustard-coloured textured paper over boards with printed title label to spine, Japanese vellum endpapers, edges uncut, original off-white tissue jacket. Eskildsen, John Peter. [Texas]
[McAllen, Tx, 1920. Very good.. Ten original photographs, each 5 x 7 inches. Light wear at edges. Captioned in negative. Contemporary pencil initials on versos. A rare group of ten original photographs by early 20th-century Texas photographer John Peter Esklidsen, who worked in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1910s and 1920s. The photographs present here were commercially produced by the Eskildsen Studio of McAllen, Texas, and perfectly showcase the boomtown flavor of the Valley in the 1920s. They show bountiful fields of cabbage, alfalfa, and onions (and in one case, the African American laborers who made it all possible), a grapefruit tree bent to the ground under the weight of its abundant fruit, fields of grass-fed pigs and dairy cattle, a newly built farm house captioned "New Eden," and a major irrigation canal. The images are titled in the negatives as follows: 1. Grapefruit in the Dr. Kalbfleisch Orchard. 2. A Magic Valley Cabbage Field. 3. 100 Rhodes-Grass Raised Duroc-Jerseys in the Bruce Young Farm. San Juan Tex. 4. Irrigating Cabbage and Onions in the Valley. 5. Mercedes. Main Canal. 6. Llano Grand Lake and Stewart Club House. 7. 5th Cutting Alfalfa on the Johnson Farm, June 17, '20. 8. Dairy Herd in Sudan Grass - Rio Grande Valley. 9. A Farm in the Valley. 10. "New Eden" - The 6 Months Old Lentz Farm House. We locate a few individual prints by Eskildsen in the photo collections of UT Rio Grande Valley and SMU, none present here.

Kollwitz, Kathe
Emil Richter, Dresden, 1920. Elephant folio, portfolio published by Emil Richter portfolio heavily worn - in fair condition, contents are prints mounted on white cards plates present (lacking or less perefect) are: (1-3 lacking) 4,5,6,7,8 (present but detached from card with one corner stuck to card) ,9,10,11 (12 lacking print but card present) 13, 14, 15,16 (17, 18 lacking) , 19, 20, 21,22, 23, 24 . Thus 18 or 24 expected are present. Number at corner of the one identified as 22 is lacking, so this one is a guess that it is actually 22. Some images are signed and some are not- some appear to be printed but a few look like pencil signatures added to the prints- presumably by Kollwitz. The images are in good to very good condition, there may be short closed tears at edges with only 8 having a very small piece detached but stuck to its board. Note that there are shadows in the on-line pictures that are not in the actual prints. There are no printed or written pages in the portfolio nor any attached to the portfolio. There are some remnants of paper on the front cover. A Tiltle page is expected, but also lacking. No owner names or bookplates noted inside. Note, due to size and weight, shipping outside the USA or priority shipping will be more expensive than an average book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

G. Buccaro
1920. In the post-World War I era, the nations of Europe who had participated in the war effort were undergoing efforts to rebuild and revitalize their economy as they transitioned away from wartime. In this Italian poster created in 1920 by the artist Buccaro, we see the woman (perhaps symbolizing Italy) indicating to the gentleman, "The Work, Here is Your New Job". The text then continues, "to ensure its beneficial increase, subscribe to The National Loan". It is a strong message of determination indicating to the gentleman that the factories and industries of Italy are on their way to rebuilding thanks to the National Loan. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters. c. 1920. Rare folio containing nearly 400 Cuban cigar labels, produced during the "Golden Age" of cigar label art. Ten panels bound into a collector's folio. Label brands include Romeo y Juleita, Cuaba, Jose Gener, and La Corona. Full-color portraits featured on a selection of labels include King George V., King Edward VII, and Simon Bolivar. Each label is in near fine to fine condition. A unique example. The use of cigar bands began in Cuba in the ealry 19th century, primarily in an effort to combat the rising prevalence of fake Cubans produced by competing European manufacturers. Collecting and displaying cigar bands became a popular gentleman's hobby in the early 1900s when an estimated four out of five American men smoked cigars. Cigar manufacturers would often produce single bands and sets featuring full color portraits of prominent political and royal figures often gilt in real gold. The 'Golden Age of cigar label art, between 1880 and 1930 saw production of label art by nearly 300,000 brands. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Initially an art advisor at Christie's, Laking became internationally recognized as a leading expert on arms and armour while still a young man, and in 1900 was appointed honourary inspector of the armouries at the Wallace Collection, then recently bequeathed to the nation. DREISER, Theodore
Los Angeles, 1920. Letters. Creases from mailing. Near Fine. Four AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED, totaling 9 pages, three of them to his good Hoosier friend and fellow socialist, Oliver M. Sayler. In the first letter, dated 9 January 1920, Dreiser suggests places Sayler could work in New York, mentioning many names including T. R. Smith of the Century Company, Henry Harper at Harper's, J. Jefferson Jones of the John Lane Company, Herbert Kauffmann at McCLURE'S, and Horace Liveright. In the second letter, dated 14 February 1920, Dreiser kindly answers Sayler's request for a letter of introduction to a paper named THE EVENING POST. He informs Sayler that most likely the letter would not do much help as it has "in so far as I can recall been anything but condemnatory -- or perhaps I had better say scornful of me & my opinions." He urges Sayler to go to other places such as the HERALD or TRIBUNE. The third letter, also dated 14 February 1920, is addressed to Mr. Scott at THE EVENING POST recommending Sayler for a position as dramatic critic there even though Dreiser is "very much aware that in so far as THE EVENING POST is concerned any recommendation I may choose to offer in behalf of another may prove more of a hindrance than an aid." Dreiser goes on to state that Sayler "is one of a very few in America or elsewhere who correctly interpret the modern theatre with all its delicate threads of experiment and theory." He says that he follows Sayler's recommendations "with a security which has not been misplaced. Also as an experimenter myself in the possibilities of the stage I have … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

[c. 1920]. One of a series of five photographs known as The Cottingley Fairy pictures -- one of the great photographic hoaxes. Two young girls cousins, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright, produced the five pictures (two in 1917 and three more in 1920) using the camera which belonged to Elsie's father and taking them while playing in the garden of Elsie's home in Cottingley. In 1919 Elsie's mother took the first two pictures to a meeting of the Theosophical Society where all assembled were enthralled. They came to the attention of one of leaders, Edward Gardner, at the society's annual conference, who had them "authenticated" by photographer Harold Snelling who declared them "genuine unfaked photographs of single exposure". The images began circulating among the English spiritualist community, which included Arthur Conan Doyle. It was Doyle who urged the girls to take more photographs in 1920 -- this image is from that group. Some years later Gardner published Fairies: The Cottingley Photographs and Their Sequel. He described this image #4 as taken August 1920. Camera: Cameo Quarter. He explains why Elsie does not seem to be looking directly at the fairy: "With fairy lovers the habit of looking at first a little sideways is common". The seriousness of this description underscores the importance of these photographs to spiritualists of the early 20th century, and the absurdity as well. The photographs are sometimes found on cardstock mounts with printed captions underneath. This silver gelatin print, with a darkened caption, we believe to be a bit later, and probably produced …
