1920. For auction is a beautiful original pen and ink illustration by the great illustrator Ernest Howard Shepard, famous for his many classic book illustrations including Winnie The Pooh and Wind in the Willows. This is an original pen and ink drawing published in "Everybody's Pepys", first published I think in the 1920s. It is fully signed. The artist has also titled the picture on the reverse of the original frame in his own hand and included his home address. The drawing is now sold unframed but freshly mounted, backed by the original frame's backboard with the inscription as it is significant. The picture is in very good condition, the drawing itself measuring 29cms x 21cms not including the mount. Please ask any questions in advance of the auctions close. Payment is requested within 3 days of the auctions close. I aim to post within 5 days of payment, often much sooner. Picture will be sent insured and signed for delivery. A really nice drawing by one of the great names in illustration - classic Shepard and very collectable.

[FORD, Henry]
Dearborn, Michigan: The Dearborn Publishing Company, 1920. A complete set of all 4 volumes in this series. All four first editions. Green paper covers. Black titles to the front covers. No titles to spine. A series of articles originally published in the Dearborn Independent between May 1920 and May 1922. An example of American anti-semitic writings following World War 1190 x 125 mm (7½ x 5 inches). 236, 256, 256, 246. pages. The articles were either written, sponsored or directed by industrialist Henry Ford. Henry Ford has been called "the most influential American anti-Semite" of his time and his writings and proclamations "revealed the existence of a strong anti-Semitic bias in the citadels of heavy industry." In his book *A Mask for Privilege: anti-Semitism in America" Carey McWilliams had this to say about Henry Ford: "Henry Ford's Dearborn Independent in the issue of May 20. 1920, suddenly discovered 'the Jewish problem.' There had been premonitory rumblings from the Sage of Dearborn. During the war years, he had vaguely intimated that a 'small clique' was pushing Wilson toward war. Ford had become by 1920 a world-famous figure, an oracle whose views were eagerly solicited on every domestic and international question. It would be difficult to overestimate the damage which Ford's vicious, persistent, and heavily financed anti-Semitic campaign caused the Jews of the world. From 1920 to 1927 the Dearborn Independent conducted a relentless anti-Semitic campaign. (Kudos to Aeolian Books, WA. for this research). Overall in fairly good condition. The green paper covers are … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rutherford (1871-1937), the "father of nuclear physics," writes to Danish physicist Martin Knudsen regarding the lectures on atomic theory he plans to give in Copenhagen, and ends with a reference to Niels Bohr. In part: "I would be prepared to begin my three lectures either on Saturday or on Monday Sept 20 as you prefer. I trust these times will meet with your approval. The titles of my 3 lectures will be 1 Counting of atoms 2 Structure of atoms 3 Isotopes and their meaning The first will be the most popular but I am hopeful I can make all three intelligbile if my audience can follow English. I am writing to Bohr also" Knudsen (1871-1949) was a molecular physicist at the Technical University in Denmark. "It was important to Bohr that Rutherford should be one of the very first to see his new Institute for Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University, and Rutherford's first visit to Denmark in September 1920 was timed with this in mind. However, the opening of the institute was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Bohr did make us of the occasion of Rutherford's visit to introduce his mentor to the Danish pulblic in a substantial popular article in a Copenhagen newspaper" (Collected Works of Bohr, vol 12, p 109). Rutherford was awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, "for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances" photo
