CONRAD, Joseph.
London: Methuen, 1920. Octavo. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt to the spine. A very good copy indeed with minor wear to the spine ends and some cracking to the front hinge. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Catherine Willard from her friend Joseph Conrad 1st Jan 1921". Catherine Willard (1898-1954) was a noted screen actress and leading lady. She met Conrad in about 1920 through her mother, Grace, who was an interior designer and helping the Conrads furnish their new home, Oswalds, in Bishopsbourne, Kent. Catherine was establishing herself as an actress and was about the same age as the Conrad's son, Borys. The latter suspected his parents of attempting to line her up as future daughter in law. Conrad was writing his dramatic adaptation of The Secret Agent at the time and had Willard in mind for the heroine. He sent the finished manuscript of the play to her, shortly before his death in 1924 and it is probable that he gave her this copy to familiarise herself with the novel, in the hope should take the part, whilst he finished the play. The Secret Agent has long been regarded as one of Conrad's finest and most enduring novels and a key influence on both Graham Greene and Eric Ambler. It is notably rare in a presentation state, even as a reprint - this is the tenth edition, the first edition having been published in 1907. "The Secret Agent depicts the atmosphere of Edwardian London in a psychological thriller of the anarchist underworld. Conrad's wit and chivalrous magnanimity are at their airiest in this novel" (Connolly). [Attribu … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

[Unkwn.]
[America, c.1920s]. Mammoth Photograph. Approx. 25 x 30 inches. Sepia tone. Very good. Poignant, an unusual, extremely large-format or "mammoth" studio photograph of an American bridal party. We've never seen a wedding photo so large. Even the wedding party is immense. In this oversized studio photograph-over 5 square feet-we see the bride and groom; the best man and two groomsmen; a maid of honor and sixteen bridesmaid's; a boy ring bearer; and five flower girls. That's 28 people! A wonderful photograph for its unexpected, striking effect.

The Society was established in 1919 to provide childcare and education centers for workers' children and the children of the unemployed. This album is an early documentation of the Society's involvement in the childcare, education, play, and summer camp activities for families of the workforce. Arciszewski served in the Socialist party and became the 31st Prime Minister of Poland. Notably, the album's first photograph depicts a crowd of children in front of a "Children's Home" in Warsaw; among the crowd is politician and co-founder of the PPS, Senator Bolesław Limanowski (1835-1935). McKay, Claude
London: Grant Richards, 1920. First edition of McKay's seminal volume of 31 poems including iconic works such as Harlem Dancer and The Lynching, published in London shortly before his return to America as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. Octavo, original wrappers, frontispiece. Boldly signed by the author underneath the frontispiece, In very good condition. Books signed by McKay are rare. Here "McKay's affection for the sonnet, the 'little song' of 14 lines his grand style favored," stands out, affirming his influential view of "the sonnet as an exceptionally transnational poetic design... In McKay's conception it ranked as a fellow vagabond equipped with centuries of worldly advice on living through the century of the color line. For him, the sonnet's thousand preceding voices whispered lessons for the emergence of black literary modernism" (Maxwell, ed., Complete Poems, xxxiv-vi). His sonnets are an elemental bridge between the "formally conventional critiques of racism offered by Phillis Wheatley, Frances E.W. Harper, James Corrothers and Paul Laurence Dunbar and the radically thematic and experimental affronts of those who came after him. Linking the past with the present, the old with the new, McKay's Harlem poetry... adds another dimension to our understanding of the complicated ways in which race, modernity and modernism intersect" (Hathaway et al., Race and Modern Artist, 64). All but five of the 31 poems here were reprinted in full in Harlem Shadows (1922), with "The Choice" (37) reprinted there as "The Wild Goat" (Hathaway, 57n). ELLOW Agha Petros
1920. First edition. 12mo. Original quarter red cloth with printed yellow boards; extremities a little worn, boards dusty, otherwise good. Some spotting to edges and opening and closing leaves. [4], 87, [1]blank, iv pp. Baghdad, Government Press, An uncommon grammar, devoted to the Kurdish (Kurmanji) and modern Syriac spoken in the regions between Mosul and the Black Sea. Agha Petros Ellow was Commander-in-Chief of the Assyro-Chaldean Forces, who were allied to Britain during the First World War. In a short introduction, he states the grammar was printed ?to meet the needs of those, who through the War are interested in the ancient Christians and Tribes of Central Asia? (p.[2]). However, it was much more likely used by officials attempting to navigate the fractured and fractious post-war landscape, in which new countries were forming and ancestral homelands were being split. By 1933, the homeland of the Yezidis was ?divided by the borders of four separate states ? Iraq, Turkey, Iran and Syria? (Açikyildiz, Birgül, The Yezidis, p.58), as was also the case for the Kurds. A year before the publication of Ellow?s work, the Government Press issued another Kurdish grammar, by Major E.B. Soane. Soane?s grammar focused on the dialect spoken in Sulaymaniyah, where Mahmud Barzanji first revolted against (British-backed) Iraqi authority; further exemplifying how Government Press publications were almost always spurred by political events in British Mesopotamia (later Mandatory Iraq). Rare in commerce, with no copies in auction records. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A very charming and unique collection of eighteen 1920's miniature manuscript illustrated motoring booklets, featuring motor cars of the time , help and advice, advertisements, parts, tools, wheels, oil, repairs etc. Each booklet pp16 including wraps ( ie four folded pages producing eight leaves, written or illustrated on recto and verso including the covers) with one issue pp 8, and seemingly complete. Various measurements between 5.1cm x 4cm for the largest to 3.4 cm x 2.4 cm for the smallest. They are all in Very Good overall condition apart from surface dust, and signs of handling. All the books have been bound with a piece of bent wire, which is rusting in some cases. There are two additional single sheets priced at 1d each which look as if they were originally intended to be single "broadsheets", but this is not clear. The collection is anonymous, but presumably produced by a boy or young man who was interested in motor cars . They all fit into the small and presumably contemporary Gallagher's tobacco tin which contained the collection when we purchased it. The tin now sits inside a purpose made box. We have never seen anything like these lovely little miniature booklets.

Various: German Political Parties, 1920. Hardcover. fair to vg. Various sizes. Original printed flyers on various papers and in various colors. An extraordinary mirror of the political climate in Bavaria two years after the end of W.W.I exhibited in 9 letter size and 4 smaller size election flyers. The tenor of all flyers reflects the extremely agitated atmosphere of the time warning the voters in drastic language to beware of corruption and profiteering of the Hoffmann government and its followers on one hand, and of the Jewish population, bolshevism and socialism as administered by the representatives of the Räterepublik on the other. The content of the flyers varies from patriotic to educational and propaganda bids to expose the true nature of the Räterepublik. Among the parties and institutions responsible for the distribution of the flyers are the Bayrische Mittelpartei claiming that no Jewish citizens are members and belaboring the failure of the current system, the Deutsche Demokratische Partei boldly announcing election fraud. Appeals by the Bayrische Volkspartei to vote for their candidates and the Deutsche Volkspartei calling for unity against Bolshevism and "Red Terror." A flyer by the NSDAP printed on both sides with an appeal to duplicate and distribute points out a "Times" exposure on the Jewish world program to enslave the peoples of the world under Jewish rule. The Bayrische Volkspartei addresses women and girls in warning against radical leftist elements, militias (Einwohnerwehr, Wachregiment and Reichswehr) attacking the Räterepublik, a … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

[Women] [Suffrage] [Theatre] [Marlowe, Julia] Genthe, Arnold
New York: Arnold Genthe, 1920. Silver gelatin print, 6 ¾ x 9 ¼ inches on larger mount. Signed by Genthe on the mount, inscribed by Marlowe as Marlowe Sothern on the mount as follows: "To Jean: our little comrade on our walks in Beautiful Stockbridge. In remembrance also of 'Sun Yat Sen' and Choo-Chio Chow. September. 1940. Julia Marlowe Sothern. Very Good. An uncommon image of the actress, feminist and suffrage advocate Julia Marlowe, who adopted the name - though never legally - Julia Marlowe Sothern after working with the Shakespearean actor E.H. Sothern. Ill health led Marlowe to retire from the stage in 1924 and she was seldom seen in public. This photograph, inscribed later in her life, is an uncommon relic from her reclusive later years. We can find no record of a Jean or the names mentioned. Arnold Genthe, who famously photographed the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 from the site of his destroyed studio, moved to New York in 1911, where he became a portrait photographer. He most likely took this picture in his stint on the east coast. We find no other record of this specific portrait of Marlowe. Some silvering at margins, otherwise excellent, with some light normal tanning to mount.

Entre 1914 et 1927, il a publié plusieurs livres couvrant son travail photographique, dont The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) et The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). Grâce à ces publications, son travail est devenu plus connu et, après 1900, il a été proposé comme membre de la Royal Geographic Society and … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

(BINDINGS - F. C. AUSTIN). WALPOLE, HUGH
London: Macmillan & Co, 1920. FIRST EDITION. 195 x 122 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 3/4"). xii, 470, 2 (ads) pp. FIRST EDITION. CHARMING BLACK MOROCCO, GILT AND INLAID, BY F. C. AUSTIN (stamp-signed on rear turn-in), covers with central panel of green morocco decorated with gilt rules and sprays of clover leaves, a narrow panel of red morocco at its head and foot, large inlaid lozenge at center, that on upper cover blind-tooled with an image of Westminster, London, that on the lower cover with a pastoral scene, raised bands, spine with gilt tooling similar to that on covers and gilt lettering, turn-ins with gilt and blind rules, all edges gilt. Isolated minor marginal stains or thumbing, but a very fine copy, the text fresh and clean, and the binding in mint condition. Prepared for and exhibited at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition in San Francisco, this is a thoughtful and pleasing binding by an artisan who had trained with and worked for some of the great names of modern English bookbinding. F. C. Austin studied bookbinding at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in London, and won the City and Guilds of London Institute's prize for bookbinding in 1933. He was a finisher at the firm founded by Roger de Coverly (1831-1914) and operated by Roger's sons Edward, Arthur, and William. Arthur de Coverly exhibited three volumes at the San Francisco Exhibition that featured the present item and five other bindings by Austin. Omar Khayyam; Edward Fitzgerald (trans); Ronald Balfour
London: Constable & Company Ltd., 1920. Hardcover. Very Good. Ronald Balfour. First edition of the Rubaiyat featuring the illustrations of Ronald Balfour and the text of Fitzgerald's enduring translation. Balfour is a mysterious artist with a minuscule output. Yet these illustrations, done in his twenties are masterful. Reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley's intricate lines, his drawings move from black and white, to the sophisticated addition of single colours, to explosions of colour. With 38 tipped in plates and numerous b/w drawings around the text. Printed on heavy paper stock. Bound in vellum style Japon paper with gilt titling and mounted image on cover. 4to. (260x200mm). Bumping to edges. Mild toning to covers. Tape residue marks to end-papers. A couple of small marks within otherwise clean and prim. Binding sound. Scarce in this state. Very good.

John Wisden
This lot is an 1920 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good to Very Good Condition, I find this a hard year to find. This book is very nice, it has had some restoration to the spine gilt and the hinges but it has done the book well, the front baord is very nice with shiny, original gilt, light wear, the spine cloth is clean with new gilt. Internally the hinges are restored and strong, the pastedowns are the usual darker yellow , part of the front right is a bit darker than the rest but internally a wonderful book, with clean white pages, tightly bound and an excellent photoplate.
