New York:: Scribner's Sons,. 1920. First edition, second printing, published the same month as the first. His second book, with 8 short stories. The first printing was 5000 copies and this scarce second printing was only 3000 copies. Bright and nearly fine with just light offset to the front endpaper from item previously laid in. The dust jacket, which is ONE OF THE SCARCEST FITZGERALD JACKETS, shows extensive professional repair, most noticeably on spine and at head of front panel where--unable to determine the correct text for what would appear to be "2nd Large Printing" (only "ge Printing" remain)--the conservationist opted to fill in with the orange, background color. Fortunately the W.E. Hill cover illustration, depicting a scene from "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" is wholly intact.

Autograph textual manuscript signed ("Ch-M Widor") relative to the Conservatoire Franco-Américain de Fontainebleau

Octavo. 2-1/2 pages of a bifolium. In black ink. Signed at conclusion and dated Paris, December 16, 1920. On letterhead with "Académie des Beaux- Arts" printed at upper left of first page. Together with autograph envelope.& & Widor offers detailed commentary on the Fontainbleau school, including mention of the noted American conductor and music educator Walter Damrosch's participation in its establishment. & & Creased and slightly split at folds; old tape repair to central creased not affecting text. . A very interesting document relative to Franco-American cooperation during the World War I era, both with regard to music in particular and to the broader socio-political context in general.& & "From 1914 [Widor] devoted a great deal of his energies to his post as permanent secretary to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, establishing pockets of French culture in London and Madrid, and contributing moral support to the war effort. He had thus achieved his personal ambition of full integration into the heart of his country’s intellectual system, but at the cost of being regarded as a pillar of an antiquated establishment by the radical young postwar generation. Ultimately his reputation lies in his consummate mastery of the organ, which provided the greatest fulfilment of his compositional genius." Félix Raugel and Andrew Thomson in Grove online

SCARCE AND LIMITED PRIVATELY PRINTED BURTON CLUB EDITION. A very handsome edition, which includes the great profusion of illustrated full page plates executed by Letchford and others for the first illustrated editions. Richard Burton was one of the foremost linguists of his time, an explorer, poet, translator, ethnologist, and archaeologist, among other things. ?The Thousand Nights and a Night? is probably the most famous of all his many works. This translation reflected his encyclopedic knowledge of Arabic language, sexual practices and life: "it reveals a profound acquaintance with the vocabulary and customs of the Muslims, with their classical idiom," [Ency Britt] as well as colloquialisms, philosophy, modes of thought and intimate details. In contrast to Victorian mores, Burton was driven to explore what would now be called by literary critics the uncanny/Unheimliche or the unresolvable tensions of human beings. Accordingly, he recorded details of daily life and practices that were considered vulgar at the time. Burton?s intellectual influence is far-reaching. His amazing grasp of languages and culture anticipates the globalism of the future. His geographical discoveries not only make him an interesting historical figure but also allowed for future exploration. The detail with which he wrote and his willingness to examine intimate aspects of daily life were precursors to modern ethnography. And his understanding and willingness to immerse himself in cultures that are still little understood by those in Western nation-states is [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Tanks in the Great War 1914-1918

London: John Murray,, 1920. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to the spine, Tank Corps badge to the upper board. Frontispiece and 7 other plates, 9 full-page maps, and one folding general map at the rear, illustrations to the text. Somewhat sunned overall, particularly at the spine which is a little chipped head and tail, a few pale splash marks to the upper board, endpapers browned, some mild foxing to the margins, a very good copy. First edition. An important book - an account of the early days of the tank by the man who probably did more than any other in the conception, development and deployment of this terrible new weapon - and an uncommon one, badly produced and heavily used, an inevitably high rate of attrition has rendered collectable copies few and far between indeed. Falls draws attention to Fuller's concern not just with the history of armoured vehicles but with their future. "The work was written before the 'mechanization' of the Army had advanced very far, but it does not suffer from this fact, so long as that is borne in mind. It is indeed, ahead of its time." An excellent association copy with the ownership inscription of Brigadier-General John Hardress Lloyd to the front free endpaper. Lloyd commanded the 3rd Tank Brigade from its formation in April 1917 to the conclusion of hostilities. He was promoted Brigadier-General on 16 April 1918, and for his services he received the DSO and Bar, was mentioned in despatches six times, and appointed a Chevalier of Légion d'Honneur.

Blick auf Zürich (vom See her).
