London: William Heinemann,, 1920. The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914–1917. Octavo. Original dark blue cloth, spine and front board lettered in silver, large block of Endurance stuck in the ice to front board in silver, publisher's device to rear board in blind, top edge dark blue. With a small collection of articles relating to Shackleton, and a photographic postcard loosely inserted. Colour frontispiece and 87 half-tone plates, folding map at the rear. Some rubbing to the tips and spine ends, small square of paper pasted to the front free endpaper below inscription, occasional very minor foxing. An excellent copy. First edition, fourth impression of Shackleton's account of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (issued four months after the first impression). Inscribed on the front free endpaper by Shackleton: "To G. W. A. Hutchison with grateful thanks for kindnesses. From Ernest Shackleton. January 1921." At this time he was on the lecture circuit, and began planning what would eventually become the Shackleton–Rowett Expedition, on which he faced his untimely death just barely a year later. The leaflet for his memorial fund is loosely laid in. This is a lovely copy of Shackleton's account of the infamous Endurance Expedition. In 1914, Shackleton and a 28-man crew had set out on the Endurance in the hope to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent – an 1800 miles journey, sea to sea. However, in January 1915, due to exceptionally cold and icy conditions, the Endurance was trapped in ice. Ten months later, the pressure of the ice crushed the ship which sank, leaving Shackleton stranded some 1,600 km from any human activity. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts, Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (ODNB). Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal.

SOUTH: The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917

New York: Macmillan Company, 1920. First American Edition. With a color frontispiece, 87 illustrations from photos and drawings, and a folding map at the rear. Tall 8vo, original ribbed green cloth lettered in gilt on spine and cover. xxi, 380 including index. An unusually bright and fine copy, the green cloth unfaded and fresh, the text fine indeed. ONE OF THE GREATEST BOOKS IN THE SOUTH POLAR OEUVRE. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST EPICS IN THE HISTORY OF ANTARCTIC TRAVEL AND ONE OF THE MOST HARROWING TALES EVER PENNED OF RESCUE AND HUMAN TRIUMPH. SOUTH is the story of Shackleton&#39;s failed attempt, after learning of Amundsen&#39;s attainment of the South Pole, to be the first to cross the last continent from sea to sea. The first editions of this book have truly become quite scarce and are rarely found in as nice condition as seen here.<br> &#147;The story of our attempt is the subject for the following pages, and I think that though failure in the actual accomplishment must be recorded, there are chapters in this book of high adventure, strenuous days, lonely nights, unique experiences, and above all, records of unflinching determination, supreme loyalty, and generous self-sacrifice on the part of my men which, even in these days that have witnessed the sacrifices of nations and regardlessness of self on the part of individuals, still will be of interest to readers who now turn gladly from the red horror of war and the strain of the last five years to read, perhaps with more understanding minds, the tale of the White Warfare of the South. The struggles, the disappointments, and the endurance of this small party of Britishers, hidden away for nearly two years in the fastnesses of the Polar ice, striving to carry out the ordained task and ignorant of the crises through which the world was passing, make a story which is unique in the history of Antarctic exploration.&#148; - Shackleton from the Preface.

Original Lithographed Portrait of General Leonard Wood

N.p. [n.d. but ca.1920's], N.p. - A stately portrait of General Leonard Wood (1860-1927), a physician who, among his many accomplishments, served as the United States Army's Chief of Staff, Military Governor of Cuba, and Governor General of the Philippines. A celebrated military figure who fought in the final battle against Apache leader Geronimo, and helped organize the "Rough Riders" with Theodore Roosevelt. A truly uncommon item by Boardman Robinson, who is best known for his political cartoons and illustrations for the socialist monthly The Masses, as well as the Liberator and New Masses. The lithograph has no statement of limitation, and we find no published example of this image, nor any record in OCLC. Original lithograph featuring a bust portrait of General Leonard Wood, signed in pencil by Wood and artist Boardman Robinson. On off-white stock measuring 49cm x 65cm (19.25" x 25.5"), professionally hinged and matted. A few short closed edge tears (not extending into image), with faint creases; Very Good-Near Fine.         TLS with 3 autogr. lines.

Washington, DC, 16. VII. 1920. - 8vo. 1 p. on double leaf. Several addenda. Fine collection of material about Alexander Graham Bell's experimental designs for hydrofoils and flying machines in his last years, i. e. the time of World War I and immediately thereafter. Brockett wrote to Bell: "The fact that I have not written to you does not mean that I have not been going ahead with the search for the material relating to the boats in which you are interested. I am going through some of the older series of 'Revista Marittima' and publications of a similar class, keeping a careful list of what I am doing, as suggested by you. Just to be sure that I am correct as to the size of the copy, I am sending you a few photostat copies which I have had made. It seems to me that it would have been much better to have the black on white as we agreed upon before you left. Another thing, as to bringing these things together, would you like to have me send them on or was it your intention that I should retain them here [.]". - A. G. Bell did not only invent the first telephone but was also a pioneer in the construction of hydrofoil boats. He undertook his first experiments in 1908 with his collaborator Fredrick "Casey" Baldwin (1882-1948), and in 1915 they created their most successful model, the HD-4, which reached 114 kilometers per hour - a record unchallenged for a decade.

        Das Verborgene Deutschland.

Offenbach a.M. Klingspor 1920 - Small quarto. (5) ff. With hand-drawn and hand-colored initial and decorations by Rudolf Koch, the famed type designer and calligrapher at the Klingspor type foundry in Germany. This copy apparently was a proof copy, as it contains handwritten notes on changes to be made to the opening initial as well as the terminal paragraph decoration on the facing page. The author, Paul de Lagarde, was a renowned nineteenth century Bible scholar and orientalist as well as a virulent anti-semite and nationalist whose writings are thought to have influenced Hitler. Koch, for his part, had strong ties to Offenbach's Jewish community, and at one time produced a complete Haggadah. That the two men's work should be paired in this volume, then, is something of an historical curiosity. Slight bumping to spine at head and foot, else fine in pictorial boards.         The Complete Poems of the Bronte Sisters

London: Hodder and Stoughton Ltd., c.1920-23., 1920. 3 vols., 8vo. Finely bound in recent full dark blue morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spine, gilt border to covers, top edge gilt. Held in a protective blue cloth slip case. A fine, attractive set. The &#39;Poems&#39; represent the Brontes first published work. On her twenty-first birthday, Charlotte Bronte had asked Poet Laureate Robert Southey about her prospects as a writer. &#39;Literature cannot be the business of a woman&#39;s life&#39; was his response. Granting this view of women, the sisters Charlotte, Emily, and Anne adopted pseudonyms to hide their sex, and published a joint collection &#39;Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell&#39; (May 1846). Although the book failed to attract interest the sisters were undeterred, and began work on their first fiction- Charlotte continued to use the name &#39;Currer Bell&#39; for her first two novels, &#39;Jane Eyre&#39; (1847), and &#39;Shirley&#39; (1849).

Erste Ausgabe. - Lexikon Schweizer Bilderbuch-Illustratoren 32. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
