Album of photographs relating to service with the Wana Column, September 1920 to February 1921.

Waziristan: , 1920-1. Landscape folio photograph album (365 x 270 mm). Original green cloth, front board gilt-lettered "Wana Column", cloth hinges, manufacturer's ticket of W. Johnson and Sons to the rear pastedown. 21 matt silver gelatin prints, all approx. 240 x 295 mm, one measuring 150 x 207 mm, and 84 original photographs, approx. 60 x 110 mm, mounted on stiff card leaves rectos and versos. 3 further group officer portraits and a print of the Taj Mahal laid in, variably faded and marked. Cloth rather mottled, one of the group portraits (Wana Column Staff) rather faded along edges, probably from the imposition of a frame, otherwise only trivial marginal mottling and fading to the professional photo graphs, the snaphots slightly faded in the main, but the images remaining very much distinct and crisp. Very good condition overall, the Holmes prints retaining their rich tonal contrasts. Superb photograph album documenting the British reoccupation of Wana and the end of the 1919-20 Waziristan campaign in over 80 intimate original snapshots, supplemented by a run of atmospheric professional photographs from Holmes's souvenir series, "With the Wana Column", and several group officer portraits, all meticulously captioned and forming an exceptionally rich portrayal of British operations in the region which from the First World War to Independence "dominated events on the North West Frontier, politically and military" (National Army Museum, online). "British photographer Randolph Bezzant Holmes (1888-1973) learned the art of photography from his father William Dacia Holmes who opened the Holmes Studio in Peshawar in 1889. Randolph Holmes took over the business from his father and operated the studio as Randolph Bezzant Holmes Co. until 1947" (Duke University, online). He seems to have served as a semi-official photographer for the British Army in India, photographing the Third Anglo-Afghan War in 1919 and accompanying a number of further expeditions, as here in Waziristan. His impressive photographs depict the progression of the Wana Column from Jandola, through the Shahur Tangi gorge to Haidiar Kach and Sarwekai camps, thence to Dargai Oba, Rogha Kot, and finally Wana, with photographs of the fort, environs, Wazir hostages, and three group officer portraits; the captions include informative details regarding the landscape, conditions, British engagements with the Wazirs, and indicate the neighbouring stations in each direction en route. The original snapshots are a fascinating illustration of the various, often competing aspects of British strategy after the Forward Policy. Numerous photographs taken at Sarwekai and environs record negotiations between Wazir tribesmen and British officers, including the "Pol. Officer", at the time James A. O. Fitzpatrick, a man viewed with suspicion by Lord Rawlinson, who considered him to have "the mind of a Mahsud", that is, excessively sympathetic to tribal interests (Marsh, Ramparts of Empire: British Imperialism and India's Afghan Frontier, 1918-1948, online). The photographer seems to have paid a great than usual degree of attention to the local population, with additional photographs of Mahsud levies, a Wazir jirga and of Wazirs paying fines in cattle. Tribal diplomacy and coercion were in the end something of a sideshow to the use of force. Further photographs depict Sarwekai aerodrome and the RAF biplanes which bombed the Mahsud villages into temporary submission, leaving them unable to assist the Wana Wazirs, the picquets constructed along the road to Wana, views and operations "on the Mahsud side near Ladha", together with ten photographs captioned "Punitive measures: Destruction of a Village" and depicting the various means of destruction, including explosives and manual dismantlement. The final four photographs, depicting the aftermath of a Mahsud ambush on a convoy, evoke the intractability of a region where "even in peacetime [British] forces were required to act as if on operations" (Tripodi, Edge of Empire: The British Political Officer and Tribal Administration of the North-West Frontier, 1877-1947, p.193). After the Waziristan campaign, it was decided to locate the main garrison of Waziristan at Razmak, manned by a brigade twice the size of a usual brigade and with six battalions of supporting arms. In 1936 renewed unrest among the Wazir tribes again boiled over into active resistance, which the British took three years to suppress, never capturing the leader, Fakir Ipi.

American Red Cross, Greek and Russian Refugees in Turkey in 1920-1922. [our title]

Hardcover. Very Good. Approximately 750 photographs in four albums. All except 16 photos are uniformly-sized and fit in the four windows (8 x 5.5cm.) on both sides to the 24 leaves in each album; a few windows are empty. The other 16 photos are larger and mostly mounted at the beginning and ends of the albums. Good quality photos with decent detail. Perhaps 20% of the photos are captioned, either individually or as groups. The four oblong albums (25 x 19cm.) are intact with covers scuffed and one backstrip missing. The compiler of these albums appears to have been an American Red Cross worker or official who was in the Middle East and involved with Greek and Russian refugees. The first three albums are generally focused on those issues although there are some photos of other subjects. The fourth album is entirely uncaptioned and contains less interesting photos appearing to record a trip starting in Constantinople, briefly touching Greece, and then at Pompeii and elsewhere in Italy. Laid in one of the albums are two copies (one typed and the other a differently formatted typed carbon copy) of a 3-4 page report titled: "File 181. U.S.S. Overton No. 239. Diary; Mersina, Turkey. A Trip by Major Davis and Mr. Whittemore to Antioch, Syria." The carbon copy is initialed at the end "C. C. D." [probably Major Charles Claflin Davis who served as Director of the American Red Cross in the Far Eastern Base (Constantinople, Smyrna, Lemnos, etc.) from 1920-1923].

        The Letters

Boston: The Atlantic Monthly Press,, 1920. Edited by his son Henry James. In two volumes. Illustrated. 2 volumes, octavo. Original blue cloth, paper label to spines lettered and ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. With the dust jackets. Photographic frontispieces with tissue guards, 13 plates and tailpiece illustrations. Small bookplate to front pastedowns and contemporary ownership inscription of Josephine B. Crane to front free endpapers. Spines of dust jackets a little faded and a few minor nicks to spine ends, one small archival repair to jacket spine of vol. II; a fine set in excellent dust jackets. First edition, first printing, of a selection of James's correspondence, published to "throw the strongest light" on the celebrated philosopher's life and writings. A contemporary reviewer for The North American Review judged that the letters were "rich in their concise and accessible condensations of James's profounder convictions" (Gilman, p. 415). This set was given to American socialite and patron of the arts, Josephine B. Crane, by a friend for Christmas, 1920. Crane is remembered primarily as a co-founder and original trustee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She was also a key benefactress of the elite Dalton School, which derived its name from the Crane family estate located in Sugar Hill, Dalton (the address which appears on the bookplates).

        A Voyage to Arcturus

London, Methuen & Co., 1920 [first edition, first issue]. Octavo, [viii] (first leaf blank), 303, [1] (colophon), 8 (publisher's catalogue) pages. The catalogue is undated, but the first page contains Einstein's 'Relativity - The Special and the General Theory', the first edition of which appeared in August 1920. It went into at least two more editions before year's end. Details of specific editions appear as a matter of course in this catalogue, so presumably this listing is for the first edition of the Einstein. Red cloth with gilt lettering and double rules on the spine, and blind lettering and a single-rule frame on the front cover; bottom edges uncut; cloth lightly stained, marked and bubbled, with the spine slightly faded; extremities a little bumped and rubbed, with minimal wear to the head of the rear hinge; a contemporary newspaper cutting (175 x 50 mm) of a review of the 1946 Gollancz edition is mounted on the front pastedown; ownership details on the front flyleaf; 'Original publication' written in ink on the verso of the title page (and both words and the printed publication details are doubly underlined in ink); trifling signs of use (top corner crease to two leaves; tiny stain to the top edge, impacting very slightly on the top margin of three leaves; minimal light foxing to the leading and bottom edges); a very good copy. Lindsay's novel, now considered a seminal work of science fiction, was not a commercial success, as the review (from the Adelaide 'Advertiser' of 4 January 1947) points out at some length. Even the 'venturesome, unorthodox Mr. Gollancz' reckoned he was taking a punt in reprinting it. When he read it, he 'welcomed it as a work of genius, if a minor one, and now, when, as he says, the public will apparently buy anything labelled fiction, he is taking a chance on people welcoming a second chance of buying' it. Gary K. Wolfe, in his work on David Lindsay (Starmont House, 1982), states that 'Out of a press run of 1430 copies, only 596 were sold', making a strong case for an upper limit to the number of copies comprising the first issue.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1920. The Special & the General Theory, a Popular Exposition. Authorised Translation by Robert W. Lawson, with Five Diagrams and a Portrait of the Author. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered in blind. 8 pages of inserted advertisements. First edition in English, first impression, translated from the third German edition (1918) by Robert W. Lawson. This is the first appearance of any of Einstein's works in English. The additional chapter (Appendix III) written by Einstein for this edition was added at Lawson's urging, who thought the book would be more accessible if its author could provide a proof of the general theory. Einstein intended the book to be intelligible to the general public, which he tested by reading drafts to his step-daughter Margot, "pausing frequently to ask whether she indeed got it" (Isaacson, p. 232).

The All-Australia Memorial. A Historical Record of National Effort during the Great War. Australia's Roll of Honour. History, Heroes and Helpers ... Introductory Narrative by E. Ashmead-Bartlett

Melbourne, British-Australasian Publishing Service (Head Office in Australia: 'Whitehall', Bank Place, Melbourne), [1920], revised edition/ [1917]. Quarto, 252, [160], [155]-158 (index) pages with 'over 1,000 Double-Tone Illustrations from Original Photographs, Drawings, Maps, Portraits, etc.' plus the very large double-image folding panoramic frontispiece and 20 single-page plates (including 8 each featuring 4 group portraits) tipped in on card mounts with printed borders, and 4 unnumbered pages (between pages 8 and 9) comprising a dedication poem and portraits of the King, Governor-General Sir Ronald Ferguson, and the Governor of Victoria, Sir Arthur Stanley. This copy does not contain the 9 folding plates usually, but not invariably, found in this volume (2 large folding panoramas, 6 double-page folding plates and a double-page folding map). It does contain the plain card mounts for them, but they were clearly never inserted in this copy. Gilt-decorated purple cloth, all edges gilt; cloth a little marked, flecked and sunned on the spine and (unevenly) on the front cover; light wear to the corners; head of the spine slightly snagged; thumbprint-sized piece snipped from the blank margin of the frontispiece (we have seen this in other copies too); a very good copy (internally in fine condition). Mounted within the decorative border printed on the recto of the stiff card to which the frontispiece is attached, is a four-page ACMF card with a gelatin silver portrait photograph (120 x 90 mm) of Lieutenant William Hill Dunn Stewart, 10th Battalion, pasted inside, facing a printed account of his war service (possibly supplied by the publisher). He embarked on October 1915, and saw action in France and Belgium; he was wounded at Pozieres but 'was with the unit at cessation of hostilities'. This 'edition is necessarily confined to the volunteers from New South Wales and South Australia. Originally framed with special reference to the Gallipoli Campaign [in fact, pages 17-201 are devoted to it], the later deeds of Australia's splendid army in France, Belgium, and in Palestine have been recorded in the present revised edition' brought up to November 1918 (Editor's Preface, page 10). Part II of the book, 'Australia's Fighting Families', contains service details and/or portraits of many thousands of men; the contents vary, usually on a state-by-state basis. This copy contains an even more mixed lot than usual: the first portion, 'Some of Australia's Fighting Families', is a pictorial section (portraits only) for Victoria (16 pages, comprising a title page and pages M101-115); it is followed by a pictorial section (portraits only) for SA (24 pages, numbered [A1]-A24), illustrated biographical sections for SA (Sections J, K and L [16 pages each section]), a pictorial section (portraits only) for NSW (24 pages, numbered [S1]-S24), an illustrated biographical section for NSW, incorrectly labelled SA on the title page (Section O, 24 pages, with a small zero or nought after each page number), and illustrated biographical sections for SA (Sections I and O [16 pages each section]).

Menachem Birnbaum was the second son of the Jewish philosopher Nathan Birnbaum and his wife Rosa Korngut. Menachem Birnbaum lived in Berlin from 1911 1914, then returned from 1919-1933. He emigrated to the Netherlands, where he was arrested in 1943 by the Gestapo and deported to Poland, where it is believed he perished in Auschwitz in 1944. The Spamersche Buchdruckerei is also well-remembered for printing illustrations of the German Expressionists, later denounced by National Socialist propagandists as Degenerate. The interior condition of this rare bilingual German-Jewish imprint is fine.

        Looming [Creation], I (all published)

Tartu: Odamees, 1920. Octavo (21.8 × 17.7 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Natalie Mei; 69, [1] pp. Later black buckram boards; original wrappers preserved; text lightly resized to binding, else internally very good. First and only volume of this important publication of Estonian modernist art and literature that marked a radical break with the "Siuru" movement around Marie Under of the late 1910s. The aesthetic and political orientation of Barbarus, Roht, and Visnapuu-each of whose work would develop along avant-gardistic lines in subsequent years-was sharply opposed to Under's refined lyricism. In what can be considered the loose group's manifesto, Visnapuu proclaims: "Long live the fresh heaps of manure!" and calls for a new, more authentic sensibility in a way that harkens back to Nietzsche. "The carcasses of dead gods still lie in the streets," Visnapuu writes, and exclaims: "Long live the new pathos [...] the pathos of emergency after chaos threatens to bury everything." Describing the state of contemporary literature, Visnapuu writes: "Anarchist art, neo-romanticism, impressionism, symbolism, futurism are all lowered into one gray, misshapen, and infinite fermenting mass. There is great chaos. Things disappear into it..." In an article on the "death of Siuru" Visnapuu calls for literally enacting the destruction with the Italian Futurists spoke of "symbolically" (p. 56). In addition to Visnapuu's theoretical essays, the volume contains a selection of poems from Johannes Barbarus' forthcoming third volume of poems, Katastroofid, and prose by Richard Roht. With striking expressionist illustrations by Natalie Mei (or Mey, 1900-1975), a gifted, yet relatively unknown Estonian painter, set designer, and graphic artist associated with the "New Objectivity"-influenced period of Estonian art in the 1920s. Aside from a few smaller vignettes, her illustrations are in color and mounted on separate leaves, as well as the front wrapper. A very rare example of Estonian avant-garde book design, which had a brief idiosyncratic moment in the late 1910s and 1920s, when avant-garde visual art was centered in the Eesti Kunstnikkude Ryhm (Estonian Artists' Group), among other places, which emphasized geometric abstraction but was also influenced by movements such as Cubism and Russian Constructivism. Sources in English on Baltic Modernism are scarce, and this is still a topic that awaits further discovery and popularization in the West. KVK, OCLC show only the copy at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

THREE CONTINENTS NOTE BOOK [manuscript title]

[Various places], 1920. Approximately [300]pp. plus extensive material laid in. Folio. Contemporary three-quarter black roan and cloth, spine detached but laid in. Corners heavily worn. Internally clean. Highly legible. Very good. Lengthy manuscript account, illustrated with numerous clippings, postcards, and photographs, detailing travels through Scotland, France, the American Southwest, Mexico, and Japan, made by architectural historian Ian C. Hannah (1874-1944). A British academic, in 1915 he was appointed to a post at Oberlin Theological Seminary in Ohio as a professor of church history. He was also somewhat of an expert on ancient Scotland and published several books on the subject. Both those passions are in evidence in the present manuscript. His handwritten notes give details on the history of construction and numerous architectural details, as well as sketches of details and floor plans. Hannah married Oberlin alumna and artist Edith Brand, who may be the creator of the original watercolor laid into the book. As listed in the front of the volume, Hannah's journeys are through Scotland; Louisiana, Utah, Colorado, Arizona; France; New Mexico, California, Kansas, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma; Japan; and Mexico. The opening section on Scotland contains numerous observations on church architecture, together with photographs, clippings, and manuscript floor plans to illustrate the commentary. Moving on to the United States he continues describing architecture and monuments, finding considerable fault with New Orleans. He writes: "The Cathedral of St. Louis is an unsatisfactory building which has been much reconstructed, partly from the slipping of its foundations...." "Christ Church Cathedral. A deplorable Gothic effort, its chief feature being metal pillars, each with four detached shafts of wood." He comments on the cemetery and the process of vaulting versus in-ground burial due to the soil and water table. In each town in Louisiana (New Orleans, Lafayette, Shreveport) the churches and other eminent buildings receive similar treatment, being described as "fair" at best. He does have kind words for the new capitol building in Salt Lake City, calling it "a very successful piece of work." He describes the courthouse in St. Louis as "dignified if not very distinctive," and the Cathedral of San Francisco in Santa Fe as "a poor modern structure in a sort of mongrel Byzantine style...," but praises the efforts to preserve the original Spanish character of the city. Approximately a quarter of the volume is devoted to Japan. His description of the Village of Hachi-Ishi includes a watercolor map of the area. Much like his laudatory descriptions of Scotland and France, Hannah seems to have enjoyed Japan and its architecture, and this section is extensively illustrated with drawings, photographs, and postcards showing the areas and buildings which he toured. The last few pages of the volume comprise an index by region.
