A set of 110 postcard photogravures of holy sites, personalities, Jews, Bedouins, historical ruins and cityscapes. Each image is mounted to a larger sheet and enclosed in a clamshell box. Fine. SPECTACULAR ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF JERUSALEM. "Born in the Ukraine in 1885, Shlomo Narinsky studied art in Moscow, Paris and Berlin before moving to Palestine where he set up a studio. In 1916, Shlomo and his wife were exiled to Egypt by the Turkish rulers. They returned to the Land of Israel after the British captured the territory in 1918. Narinsky opened a studio in Paris, but Shlomo was arrested when the Nazis captured France. They returned to Israel, eventually moving to Haifa where Shlomo taught as a photography teacher. He died in 1960, relatively unknown." â€" [Web-source].         Album of twelve fine watercolours of feathers painted on silk.

[c.1920]. Small album (c.190 × 190 mm), stiff card wrappers covered in white silk with woven semiabstract design, corded edging to the wraps, initials "F.R." embroidered to the front panel which is decorated with a bow, ties frayed. 12 pieces of cream silk 160 × 160 mm, including fringed edges, each with a meticulously painted group of two or three brightly coloured feathers, and each protected a fold of bark-textured crepe paper. The album slightly soiled, a few very faint spots of discolouration to the silks, one leaf with a split now supported with Japanese tissue, the image unaffected, but overall extremely well preserved. A superb collection of brilliantly rendered, almost photo-realist paintings of feathers; exquisitely finely coloured, and subtly highlighted and shaded, the sheen of the silk supporting the illusion, suggesting the natural translucence and lustre of the subject. Perhaps originally a wedding gift (the pattern of the cloth does suggest stylised bells and roses), it is still surprising that this exquisite collection has remained together.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTION POSTER: [A BOOK IS NOTHING BUT A MAN SPEAKING IN PUBLIC].

Peterburg [Saint Petersburg]: Gospudarstvennoe Izdatel'stvo - A. F. Marks . 1920 - Lithograph on tan paper (Very Good, blank corners pasted over with similar paper) 64,5 x 47,5 cm (25.4 x 18.7 inches). A rare poster promoting printed propaganda and literacy during the October Revolution, was made by a Russian artist Ivan Simakov. This powerful poster, made during the October revolution in Petrograd (Saint Petersburg), in 1920, advertises the power of the printed word. A large book is presented as an equal to a man, speaking to a large crowd of workers. The poster was a part of a large Bolshevik propaganda campaign to enlarge literacy among the working class in the first years of the Russian Revolution, when only 31,9% of population was literate. The campaign, with a goal of spreading more written propaganda in the next years, started in 1919. Ivan Simakov was a Russian artist, active as a propaganda poster designer during the October revolution. His most famous work is a large political poster titled On the 7th Anniversary of October Victory. Long Live the Unshakeable Iron Union of the Working Class and Peasantry! Adolf Marks Publishing House - The publishing house, which issued this poster, was founded by Adolf Marks (Marx, 1838-1904), born in Stettin (today Szczecin in Poland) as a son of a tower clock maker. He received his education at Hinstorff publishing house in Wismar and in 1859 he moved to Saint-Petersburg on the invitation of the firm Bietepage & Kalugin, to deal with German books. Later he was working as a tutor and German and French correspondent for the Great Russian Railway Company. A decade after his arrival to Russia, Marks founded his own publishing firm in 1869, and a year later he started publishing Niva, the first illustrated weekly magazine and the most popular weekly magazine in pre-Revolutionary Russia. Marks's company also published books on art history, large, illustrated editions of classic prose works, and maps. References: Rudolf Schmidt: Deutsche Buchhändler. Deutsche Buchdrucker. Band 4.         Portrait of Gabriele D'Annunzio wearing the Novara Lancers lieutenant-colonel's uniform, inscribed & signed by the sitter

1920 - ~ Gelatine silver print pasted to a cardboard mount, size approx. 22cm x 16cm, inscribed by the sitter « Alla Loggia Camilo Grandjacquet / Fiume d'Italia 1920.» and with a top right caption 'Nec recisa recedit' (Not Even Broken Retreats), an ancient gladiator's motto revamped by D'Annunzio and later adopted by the 'Guardia di Finanza'. / Following Italy's declaration of war on Austria on May 24, 1915, the Italian War Ministry granted D'Annunzio (then 52) the privilege to revive his commission as a lieutenant in the Novara Lancers. He was promoted lieutenant-colonel in 1919 while in Rome, where he was later noticed wearing his uniform while giving some speeches, before being expelled to Venice by the government. Once there he requested his own dismissal from the Army only to head the grenadiers' force that, in Sep 12, left the camp at Ronchi to invade Fiume. All this wandering gives little help as to identify the place where this photography has been taken. D'Annunzio is reported to have inscribed with the same motto a number of other photographic portraits of himself while commanding the Italian troops in Fiume, where he stayed until Jan 18, 1921. / The dedicatee might have had an affiliation with some relative of Claudio Grandjacquet, one of the seven officers that took an oath to free Fiume at the camp of Ronchi ('I giurati di Ronchi') and that was sent to Venice in Aug, 1919 with an appeal to D'Annunzio to lead their mission, becoming a member of the expedition to Fiume. ~ In fine condition

RUR. Rossum's Universal Robots: kolektivní drama o vstupní komedii a trech aktech [a collective play in three acts and a prologue]

Aventinum, Prague 1920 - Octavo (22 × 14.8 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Josef apek; 96, [3] pp. Very light wear and sun-tanning to wrappers; an unusually well-preserved copy. The rare first edition of Capek's most famous work, a groundbreaking science fiction play in which the word 'robot' was used for the first time. With the striking woodcut cover design by the author's brother and close collaborator, Josef Capek, as well as his publisher's mark and vignette to the title page. It was Josef, in fact, whom Karel credited with coining the term, based on Czech robota, meaning 'hard labor' or 'slavery.' "Capek's invention of the contemporary idea of the robot was a direct response to the radical cultural and economic transformations produced by increasing industrialisation. Rather than the spectacle of mechanical life made by man, as seen on the eighteenth-century stage, R.U.R. reflected the glowing fears that man himself had become machine" (Elizabeth Stephens, "We Have Always Been Robots," in robots and art, p. 34). A great success locally, the play was translated and performed throughout the world almost immediately. One of 2000 copies printed. Decidedly scarce in such excellent condition. One of 625 numbered copies signed by the illustrator Arthur Rackham. Printed on English hand-made paper with an additional color plate. Illustrations: 25 full page silhouettes, comprising 9 in color (frontispiece and 4 double plates)--and 16 in black (including 4 double illustrations); one mounted colored plate; silhouette head-and tail-pieces and other silhouettes throughout the text, in black. In very good condition. "Rackham's fanciful imagination gave his illustrations instant recognition, and his dedication to illustration kept him in the public eye for 30 years" (Hodnett, 233). Like his Cinderella (1919), The Sleeping Beauty relied "almost wholly for [its] effect on silhouette... Rackham [was] a master of the medium, being able to evoke character and humor by profile and gesture alone, and allowing the two-dimensional effect of his pen work to lead the reader through the book and keep the story going" (Hamilton, 118).

        IRISH FAIRY TALES

London Macmillan 1920 - LIMITED FIRST EDITION, one of 520 numbered copies SIGNED by illustrator Arthur Rackham. With 16 very fine colour plates and 21 black and white illustrations within the text by Arthur Rackham. Large 4to, in the publisher's original deluxe limited edition binding of vellum backed parchment covered boards, lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on both upper cover and spine, t.e.g. Now housed in a fine custom clamshell box of maroon cloth over boards with a morocco label gilt lettered. x, 318 pp. A very fine copy, unusually bright and fresh, the binding clean, the covers and spine much brighter and more clean than is the usual. The textblock in fine order, the plates fresh and very well preserved. An excellent copy. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION, IN THE SIGNED LIMITED FORMAT AND IN A WONDERFUL STATE OF PRESERVATION. Rackham’s friend James Stephens wrote his collection of Irish Stories drawing from a rich oral tradition and also from the original Gaelic texts. He succeeded in presenting the old tales in a poetic and accessible form for the general modern reader. The collection is an excellent introduction to traditional Irish Fairy Stories and includes: The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill, The Boyhood of Fionn, The Carl of the Drab Coat, Mongan’s Frenzy, and many more. Rackham brought forth another collection of dazzling and imaginative illustrations. The Dublin Independent wrote a warm review of Rackham’s Irish Fairy Tales: "We read English tales with appreciation because pictures have familiarized us with English imagery. A Fenian tale lacks imagery because we have no art to give it colour and shape to what are presently only names. Some of Mr. Rackham’s pictures are pure poems - they set you dreaming."         AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED FROM VICTOR CAMPBELL TO FELLOW EXPEDITION MEMBER SILAS WRIGHT.

      - TERRA NOVA EXPEDITION. January 28, 1920. Autographed note from Victor Campbell to "Silas" Wright, responding to a question about the time kept by the Northern Party in comparison with the Main Party, even though they had been in different time zones. Lieutenant Victor Campbell was First Officer on Scott's Terra Nova Expedition. After arriving in Antarctica his role was to lead an Eastern party of six men to explore and carry out scientific work in King Edward VII Land, to the east of The Barrier (known today as the Ross Ice Shelf). On the 26th of January 1911, Campbell's party left on the Terra Nova. After failing to find a suitable landing site on the King Edward VII Land shore, Campbell decided to sail to Victoria Land. On its return westward, Terra Nova encountered Amundsen's expedition camped in the Bay of Whales, an inlet in the Barrier. After returning to Cape Evans and informing Scott of Amundsen's location, Campbell's party was renamed the Northern Party and set off again, sailing northwards and landing at Robertson's Bay, near Cape Adare. They built a hut and wintered at Cape Adare but due to the sea ice conditions were unable to fulfill much of their intended explorations scheduled for the summer of 1912. In January of 1912, Terra Nova returned from New Zealand, and transferred the party of Campbell, Raymond Priestley, G.M. Levick, G.P. Abbott, H. Dickason, and F.V. Browning to Evans Cove, 400 km south of Cape Adare and 320 km northwest of Cape Evans. However, they only had sledging provisions for six weeks with the intention of completing the geological work in a couple of weeks. After the work was done they were left with rations for about four weeks. It was not anticipated the ship would have trouble picking them up as arranged in February, but the Terra Nova could not reach them due to heavy pack ice. Unable to connect with their ship, the Northern Party was forced to winter in Antarctica yet again. They built an ice cave on Inexpressible Island where they spent the winter in miserable conditions, supplementing their rations by killing scarce seal and penguins. On the 30th of September 1912, they set off for Cape Evans, finally arriving on the 7th November after crossing more than 320km of sea ice. After learning of the death of Scott and the entire Polar Party, as the senior remaining Naval officer, Campbell assumed command of the Terra Nova Expedition for its final weeks.

THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER In Seven Parts

London: George G. Harrap, 1920. Deluxe edition. Stunning work of art. Quarto. 9 3/4 in (25 cm) tall; unpaginated. No date, circa 1920. Printed by H. & J. Pillans & Wilson, Edinburgh. Fine binding in olive green morocco with bright gold-stamped ornamentation, lettering and jewel-toned accents to front cover; bright gold-stamped illustrations and letters to spine. Hand sewn headbands. Top edge gilt; others untrimmed. As befitting Coleridge's dramatic epic poem, Willy Pogany has extensively gilt tooled the spine and front cover with pictures including a ship of color leather inlays and has fully decorated every page. To paraphrase Vadeboncoeur, "Willy Pogany's art nouveau masterpiece. The large format allowed Pogany to pull out all the stops. Each page is at least two colors, sometimes with a gilt plate and usually an intricate border added. Extra-elaborate initials started each page, with simply ornate capitals for the beginning of each line. An illuminated title page, 20 tipped-in color plates, the second color added to the black and white plates, the flowing calligraphic text, and the numerous pen & ink drawings throughout make this special." Tight binding. Square corners. Fine tipped-in plates. Heavy stock, cream pages largely clean and unmarred with no bookplate, writing, salient marks, or tears; no loose pages. Clear protective cover. Crown and top corners chafed, rear cover with minor scratch, pastedowns with outer edges glue-toned, blanks foxed, pages and edges with intermittent light foxing, opening pages with light crease. Well-preserved, finely bound, epic poem lavishly illustrated by Willy Pogany. Vadeboncoeur, bpib online. Rarebookhub online. Very good+. No Jacket as issued.

        Sleeping Beauty.

London: William Heinemann, 1920. Signed limited deluxe edition. Quarto, original half vellum over cream boards, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt.

        IL DECAMERON

Chelsea: Ashendene Press, 1920. ONE OF 80 PAPER COPIES FOR SALE (of 105 printed). There were six additional copies on vellum (according to Hornby's bibliography; Franklin says there were 10 such copies). More than seven years in production (owing partly to World War I), this elegant folio, like other large format Ashendene books, is sumptuous without being self-consciously grandiose. The strengths of the press are highlighted here: thick, creamy paper, elegant typeface and initials, and a stately page with vast margins. With one of the smallest press runs among the later Ashendene books, it is printed entirely in Italian (including even the colophon), a fact that did not prevent a copy from being destroyed in 1927 by the US post office in Kansas because of its immoral content. Because of their size and generally fragile materials, the large format linen-backed Ashendene books are now difficult to find except in unflattering condition. The binding here has done its job of protecting the text block admirably, and the contents are as fresh as the day they left the press.. 419 x 298 mm. Original linen-backed blue paper boards, printed paper label on spine, edges untrimmed. Fine printed initials in red and blue designed by Graily Hewitt for this edition. Text in Subiaco type printed in black, red, and blue. Prospectus and order form for "Ecclesiasticus" laid in at front. Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of Richard Montgomery Gilchrist Potter. Hornby 29; Franklin, pp. 124, 129-32, 239-40. Head edge of front board with narrow four-inch dampstain (not affecting interior), mild soiling of no consequence to boards, but the binding quite sound, and A BEAUTIFUL COPY INTERNALLY, entirely clean, smooth, and bright.         RUBÁIYÁT OF OMAR KHAYYÁM

London: George G. Harrap & Co, ca. 1920. This is an attractively bound and illustrated edition of an enduring classic involving a Persian text, an English translator, and a Hungarian illustrator. The text is an uncertain but beautiful amalgam of the Medieval and the 19th century. Although we know that Omar Khayyám was an 11th century astrologer and mathematician, we are less certain about his poetic accomplishments, and very unsure if the text here was his work. What we do know is that the poetry is early, that it may have been Omar's, that it was translated into English in 1859 by Edward FitzGerald (1809-83), and that this lush and evocative translation has become a widely acclaimed work whose popularity has endured to the present day. First published anonymously, this translation is the chief work of FitzGerald, whose great wealth permitted him to devote his entire adult life to literature, especially translation. The ethereal illustrations are the work of Hungarian artist Willy Pogany (1882-1955), who immigrated in 1914 to America, where he found success as an illustrator and set designer known particularly for his depictions of exotic locales and ancient times. In addition to illustrating such works as "The Arabian Nights" and "The Golden Fleece," Pogany designed sets for the Metropolitan Opera and Broadway productions.. 214 x 132 mm. (8 3/8 x 5 3/8"). [56] leaves. Fine dark blue morocco, gilt, by Bayntun-Riviere, large mandorla on upper cover, raised bands, spine compartments with snake and chalice centerpiece, gilt titling, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Leaves with frames and ornaments in sea green, and 16 color illustrations mounted on leaves, all by Willy Pogany. A few faint spots of foxing to first and last couple of leaves, otherwise A VERY FINE COPY, clean, fresh, and bright internally, and in an unworn binding.
