Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. ("Egon").

Wien, 11. V. 1920. - ½ S. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to.

First edition, review copy. Signed autograph of Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz to Robert Garric. Catholic reformist, he was the   founder of "social Teams" in 1920, which aimed to establish a social elite and bring the good word about the brotherhood born of the trenches to the workers, in the tradition of patronage. Simone de Beauvoir, then student of Robert Garric in philosophy at Sainte-Marie Institute of Neuilly, remembers him   in his "Memoirs of a Tidy Wench"   "Garric appeared; I forgot everything else and myself; the authority of his voice subdued me. In twenty years we he explained, he had discovered in the trenches the joys of camaraderie that removed social barriers. [...] To deny all limits and all separations, get out of my class, out of my skin: this slogan electrified me. [...] Must serve my life! Must serve all my life! " Back passed, small light spots on the boards, reading a few marks in pencil by the dedicatee in margins of some leaves. Grasset Paris 1935 12x19cm broché

        La Batrachomyomachie

Paris: Marcel Seheur,, 1920. Poème attribué a Homère. Translaté du grec en français par Mario Meunier orné de bois gravés par … Quarto (274 × 180 mm). Contemporary green quarter calf, marbled boards and endpapers, original wraps bound in, the upper with a hand-coloured wood-cut vignette. Hand-coloured woodcut frontispiece and 10 similar plates, historiated initials, head- and tail-pieces throughout, vignette to the title page, complete suite of illustrations printed in black at the rear. Spine sunned, a little rubbed at the extremities, front hinge a little cracked at the head after the free endpaper, pale toning, else very good. Edition of 525 copies, this the tête de tirage, copy A of 25 lettered copies coloured on Japon, with an additional suite of all illustrations in black; the artist's copy warmly inscribed to him by the translator and publisher; with the original artwork for one of the plates loosely inserted. Extremely uncommon, OCLC locates copies at BnF, BIU-Lsh Lyon, BCU Dorigny, Lausanne, and Princeton only, these all appear to be copies of the 100 "sur papier Hollande, teinté crème", that at Princeton being copy number 3. Boucher, Meunier and Seheur met in Merseburg prisoner of war camp in Saxony during First World War, and for a brief period in the 20s they produced a handful of very cleverly conceived and handsomely made illustrated books together. Seheur was wiped out by the 1934 French Crisis, Meunier became France's foremost Hellenist of the twentieth century, Boucher continued as a jobbing commercial artist, probably best-remembered for his inventive work for Air France. A superb copy of a wonderfully witty and wise reading of this ancient satire on military vainglory.

JARDINS. Carnet de plans et de dessins.

First edition, presentation copy to Gordon Knox, signed by Forestier. "(Forestier's) friends noted his talents and asked him to design their grounds, and as a preparatory study for this he planned seventeen imaginary gardens, which later formed the central portion of his book "Jardins"." (Fox, Helen Morgenthau. in "Jean C.N. Forestier", LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE, 1930, pp. 93). Forestier was Conservateur of the Paris parks, city planner, designer of modern gardens, such as the rose and iris gardens at Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne, and authority on the design of Spanish and Arabic gardens. In JARDINS, Forestier went beyond the imaginary gardens proposed for friends to cover details of his approach to terraces, lawns, stairs, fountains, bassins, benches and tilework. A long list of his recommendations for best roses is included. Additionally, he offers illustration and commentary on gardens that made his fame: that of Joseph Guy at Beziers; of Montjuich at the Barcelona exposition; and of La Casa Del Rey Moro in Andalousia."In his designs, plants partially erase, rather than reinforce, the rigor of the plan. This play between the grace of the vine and the strict line of the post situated Forestier precisely at the juncture of the jardin à la française and the cubist/modernist garden." (Imbert, THE MODERNIST GARDEN IN FRANCE, p. 25) A signed presentation copySmall folio (32.5 x 25.2 cm); 240 unnumbered pp., profusely illustrated from drawings and plans, full page and in text. Original paper wraps with title printed on upper cover, illustration or design on upper and lower covers; covers darkened and soiled; final few pages lightly soiled at margins.

Illustrations de Edmond Dulac. Paris: L'Edition D'Art. H. Piazza, [October 1920].First French edition. One of 1,500 copies. Large quarto (11 7/8 x 9 1/4 inches; 302 x 234 mm.). 139, [1, printer?'s imprint] pp. Ten mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards.Original strong blue color wrappers, embossed and ornamented with sponge-like designs in silver and gilt; small paper label printed with brown lettering and design on front cover. This copy is not numbered but is an "Examplaire Offert par Léonard Rosenthal a M. Poupon". A fine copy."The French edition also is decorated with the following extra designs, not found in English language editions: 14 chapter headpieces, each different, formed by large white initials, black and light olive designs of seahorses, starfish, octopus, conch shells, etc.; 3 additional headpieces; 9 tailpieces; half-title design; 2 frames for letterpress on limitation and printer's pages."?"Au Royaume de la Perle was first published in Paris (by Payot) in 1919 without benefit of the Dulac illustrations which the author Mr. Rosenthal so eagerly sought. But when, in 1920, Dulac found time to produce 10 pictures, Mr. Rosenthal not only purchased the water colours, but had another publisher, Piazza of Paris, publish a 1,500-copy new edition of his ?'Perle?' book with the Dulac illustrations. Also Dulac reveals in a reply to a Mr. Carroll of Massachusetts who hoped to buy one of the ?'Pearl?' illustrations that Mr. Rosenthal also purchased the copyright to the 10 pictures. However Mr. Rosenthal did allow his book with Dulac pictures and in English translation to be published in England by The Nisbet Publishing House… The ?'Pearl?' pictures indeed display a ripening of a Dulac style first seen in Sindbad the Sailor, employed in some of his Fairy Book pictures and developed fully in The Tanglewood Tales. It is a Persian miniature style, but made quite his own…His plates, truly genius, do much to bring a fanciful touch to the otherwise stark exposition of a treatise on pearls?" (Hughey).Hughey, 54a.

The group includes wonderful depictions of mirrors, beds, window drapes, chairs, desks, bureaus, tables, and stands. Additionally, there are eleven works showing the interior design of various room settings. Theodore Hofstatter succeeded his father in their New York City business of furniture design and construction, naming the firm Hofstatter's Sons when his brother Adolph joined him in the concern in the early 1870s. The Hofstatter family concentrated their efforts on building quality furniture at wholesale prices. In 1885, Theodore Hofstatter founded a branch of the business to focus on interior decorating, opening a separate location on Broadway near Twelfth St. Eventually, the business would move to at least two different addresses on Fifth Ave., evidenced by Hofstatter labels affixed to the verso of several of the watercolors here (a few of these labels are also marked "Special Design" by Hofstatter). Theodore's design business, according to THE NATIONAL CYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY (1894), "kept abreast ever since [its opening] with the current of fashionable taste in illustrating, in the styles reproduced, all those characteristics with which the names inseparably connected with the history of the three Louis are essentially a part. Berain, Lebrun, Watteau, Andre, Charles Boule, have now a historical significance; Cailleri, Gouthiere, Reisener, Fragonard, Greuze, Boucher, Martin, and the rest, awaken a whole train of associations. It is through their influence, and such as theirs, that Theodore Hofstatter's designs possess the material to produce only those effects that can be truthfully termed good style." Hofstatter restricted his decorating contracts largely to commercial interests, furnishing the City Club, the Downtown Club, the Arkwright Club, and nine floors of the Hotel Savoy. He also cultivated a small group of private clients, one of whom was Cornelius Dresselhuys, Dutch consul to Great Britain. Two of Dresselhuys's rooms, the Entrance Hall and Vestibule, at 9 Kensington Palace Gardens in London are featured here in lovely full watercolors. A fascinating group of artwork featuring furniture and interiors from a prominent New York City furniture maker and interior designer. Such original illustrations of furniture and interior decoration are, in our experience, quite scarce.

Original Frank Hurley Photographs of New Guinea.

1920 -1923 1920 - Original publicity photographs by James Francis (Frank) Hurley (1885-1962) the Australian photographer, filmmaker and writer known for his Antarctic photographs, including the destruction of Ernest Shackleton's ship 'Endurance'. After that harrowing journey, Hurley vowed to visit the hottest place on earth, and he undertook two long expeditions to the Torres Strait and New Guinea between 1920 and 1923. From this, he developed a successful anthropological film, 'Pearls and Savages' and the book by the same title. He documented the people, their rites, houses, villages, artifacts, and mountain scenes. Although reviews in Australia were strong (one critic called it "probably the most beautifully photographed pictorial of the kind that has ever been screened"), the film release in America resulted in a financial loss for Hurley, retitled "The Lost Tribe". The book was printed in a New York edition in 1924. A typed sheet is attached to most photos, titled "Guinea Cannibals Look Like a Lost Tribe of Israel, Captain Frank Hurley, Explorer, Finds". Starting saying "A race of head hunters with Jewish features has been discovered by Capt. Frank Hurley, explorer, 280 miles up the Fly River. he said they might have been mistaken for a lost tribe of Israel." One of the images, not published in the book, titled "A view looking out of the entrance of the great kau ravi kaimabi" is reminiscent of Hurley's striking use of light and dark in his images of Australian troops in France and Flanders during WWI. The nine b&w 8 x 10" Hurley prints are also stamped International Newsreel, 226 William Street New York City on the verso. They include: The dubu daima of the Urama men and its initiated warriors; A view looking out of the entrance of the great kau ravi kaimabi (NOT illustrated in the book); A scene on the sand covered coral reef near the entrance to the Great Fly River, Papua; The Mountuan [sic] men wear the dazzling millinery creations made from parrots feathers surmounted with gorgeous plumes of the Baggian [sic] bird of paradise plumes; The main street of Mailu Village, south east Papua (2 copies); Hamoji; the Great Chief of the Sambio Headhunters is shown here wearing his regal plumes of the Raggiana bird of paradise. (Frontispiece of 'Pearls and Savages".) Photographs well handled, with some cracking and creasing at edges. Two photos have loss at corners. Otherwise bright, early impressions. A fascinating survival of Frank Hurley's publicity push for "Pearls and Savages" in the United States.
