Bulgarski baladi, s sedem risunki ot Sirak Skitnik [Bulgarian ballads, with seven drawings by Sirak Skitnik]

Sofia: Khemus, 1920. Octavo (22.5 × 17 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Sirak Skitnik; 47 pp. Frontis portrait and seven leaves of illustrations by Sirak Skitnik. Small tear to upper spine extremity; discrete owner signature to title; overall still a very good copy. An important volume of Bulgarian Symbolist poetry by Traianov (1882-1945), a politician and poet who collaborated with noted Bulgarian modernist journals such as "Vezni" and "Zveno" and co-edited the Symbolist journal "Khiperion" in 1922-31. Having absorbed the influences of the Viennese boheme, Traianov went on to create a new brand of Bulgarian symbolism that expressed transcendental values, mystic experience and even revived a kind of Bulgarian religious messianism. This landmark collection was a particularly lavish affair, printed on better paper and illustrated with seven striking drawings by Sirak Skitnik. They reveal this Bulgarian avant-garde artist's characteristic fusion of Bulgarian folkloric motifs and avant-garde stylistic devices, such as abstraction and angularity. The cover features "expressionistically elongated nuns, haloed heads affectingly bowed, who stride through a serried landscape. The somber tenor of the stark figuration contrasts with the flowing lines of the sheaves being borne, and with the rich pattern of abstract striations that border the scene" (NYPL Catalog p. 26, fig. 24). Jacono 5. Rare, especially in such good condition. OCLC shows three copies in the United States, at Stanford, Ohio State, and NYPL (see their Digital Collection: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchresult.cfm?parent_id=1045057).

        Flappers and Philosophers

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920 New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920. First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark green cloth (Bruccoli's "B" binding), lettered in blind to front board and lettered in gilt to spine. A very good copy with some light wear and fading to spine, a faint white mark (approx. 1-inch) to lettering on front board, spine slightly shaken at a few gatherings within text block, former owner signature in pencil to front free endpaper, otherwise clean. Overall, an attractive copy. Bruccoli A6.I.a. Flappers and Philosophers, the author's first collection of short stories, followed Fitzgerald's debut novel This Side of Paradise, which brought the twenty-four-year old author much critical and commercial fame. As per Scribner's sales tactics, each collection of short stories was scheduled to follow the publication of a novel, with the goal of the short story collection feeding off the popularity of its companion novel. Flappers and Philosophers contains 8 of the author's best early stories: "The Offshore Pirate," "The Ice Palace," "Head and Shoulders," "The Cut-Glass Bowl," "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," "Benediction," "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," and "The Four Fists." In these pieces, Fitzgerald introduces his archetypal Jazz Age characters that would come to be collectively known as the Lost Generation: attractive, impulsive young women (flappers) and licentious, nomadic young men (philosophers). . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Final Report of Gen. John J. Pershing, Commander-in-Chief American Expeditionary Forces.

Washington: Government Printing Office, 1920 - Octavo. Publisher's black sand-grained skiver over heavy card presentation binding, title above the War Office Seal blocked in gilt to front cover within thick single gilt rule panel, similar panel to the lower cover; ad personam to Earl Haig, "Field Marshal The Earl Haig" blocked in gilt in the lower right front corner. Somewhat dry and a little rubbed particularly at the extremities, front joint a little cracked, consequently slightly open at the title page, text-block lightly toned, but overall very good. 16 large, coloured folding maps at the rear. First edition of Pershing's official report as C-i-C AEF covering concluding operations in World War I. This copy wholeheartedly inscribed by Pershing to Douglas Haig, who famously he would describe as 'the man who won the war': "To Field Marshal The Earl Haig, In Memory of our service together in the World War, and with sincere and lasting friendship, John J. Pershing, Washington, D.C.". It is difficult to imagine a more meaningful association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        GERMAN EROTIC PROPAGANDA MEDAL

N.p., 1920. 1 vols. 2-1/4 inches diameter. Fine condition, mounted in a double glazed circular gilt plaster and red plush frame. 1 vols. 2-1/4 inches diameter. Goetz was the most celebrated propaganda medallist of early 20th century Germany. The obverse shows a nude female captive, her arms tied behind her to a giant phallus surmounted by a French soldier's helmet, under the words "Die Schwarze Schande", a broken harp beside her, and an all-seeing eye looking down. The reverse displays a grotesque caricature of a negroid French soldier, in helmet, next to the words "Liberté egalité fraternité", and the date 1920; above are the words "Die Wacht Am Rhein!!", possibly a scurrilous reference to French colonial troops serving in World War I.

A set of 110 postcard photogravures of holy sites, personalities, Jews, Bedouins, historical ruins and cityscapes. Each image is mounted to a larger sheet and enclosed in a clamshell box. Fine. SPECTACULAR ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF JERUSALEM. "Born in the Ukraine in 1885, Shlomo Narinsky studied art in Moscow, Paris and Berlin before moving to Palestine where he set up a studio. In 1916, Shlomo and his wife were exiled to Egypt by the Turkish rulers. They returned to the Land of Israel after the British captured the territory in 1918. Narinsky opened a studio in Paris, but Shlomo was arrested when the Nazis captured France. He was later exchanged for a German spy caught in Palestine after the intercession of David Ben-Gurion and Yitzchak Ben-Zvi. They returned to Israel, eventually moving to Haifa where Shlomo taught as a photography teacher. He died in 1960, relatively unknown." - [Web-source].         Album of twelve fine watercolours of feathers painted on silk.

[c.1920]. Small album (c.190 × 190 mm), stiff card wrappers covered in white silk with woven semiabstract design, corded edging to the wraps, initials "F.R." embroidered to the front panel which is decorated with a bow, ties frayed. 12 pieces of cream silk 160 × 160 mm, including fringed edges, each with a meticulously painted group of two or three brightly coloured feathers, and each protected a fold of bark-textured crepe paper. The album slightly soiled, a few very faint spots of discolouration to the silks, one leaf with a split now supported with Japanese tissue, the image unaffected, but overall extremely well preserved. A superb collection of brilliantly rendered, almost photo-realist paintings of feathers; exquisitely finely coloured, and subtly highlighted and shaded, the sheen of the silk supporting the illusion, suggesting the natural translucence and lustre of the subject. Perhaps originally a wedding gift (the pattern of the cloth does suggest stylised bells and roses), it is still surprising that this exquisite collection has remained together.
