Adventures in the Canyons of the Colorado

William Wallace Bass, Grand Canyon, AZ 1920 - 38pgs.stapled wraps. Lacks front endpapers.Gray covers. photo frontispiece, illustrated. Light toning to the pages. on top of verso of the frontispiece is written in ink "Annotated for Elwood P. Bonney by Frederick J. Dellenbaugh January 1933.". Dellenbaugh begins his annotations of Bass's work with a full page account of the three men who were killed during the Powell Expedition of 1869 from Powell himself. He questions the date of the murders and who murdered them. Throughout the book his notations refute much of Bass's findings. Bonney met Dellenbaugh through the Explorers Club. Bonney being an amateur historian and collector, became interested in Dellenbaugh's work. Bonney and Dillenbaugh corresponded out of a shared personal interest, as wel as discussing the West and the Canyon. Dellenbaugh served as artist and assistant topographer for Powell's second expedition down the Colorado River. This is a rare, historical item.         TUTT AND MR. TUTT.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920. - First edition. The correct first edition with the four errors contained on the "Contents" page. The very scarce first state with numerous errors on the Contents page, which is integral. The second state has the errors corrected and is on a stub. Four titles were incorrect, beginning with the first story, “Mock, Etc.” corrected to “Mock Hen and Mock Turtle.” A just about fine copy lacking the hopelessly rare dust jacket. Queen's Quorum 67 says, "It is interesting to note that in a list of books prepared by a committee of the Faculty of Harvard Law School for prospective law students -'books which will help them decide about the desirability of entering the legal profession or which will be of value in preparation for the study of law' - the tales of Tutt are included as 'an entertaining collection of short stories showing the great variety of questions which may confront a practicing lawyer and the chances for ingenuity.' So, Mr. Ephraim Tutt, tall and ungainly, with bony fingers and lank gray locks, with the inevitable stogy and the stove-pipe hat - in a phrase, the Lincolnesque legal beagle - has established his picturesque dignity even in the hallowed halls of Harvard - an academic acceptance seldom bestowed on fictional ferrets." A splendid copy of a scarce title. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

UZBEK PRO-COMMUNIST MAGAZINE: MY COMPASSIONATE MULLAH .

Samarqand, Uzbekistan [early ]. 1920 - Large 4°, [8] text pages with illustrations within text and with two full-page lithographs (Very Good, slightly age-tomed and fragile, edges with small tears and loss of paper). A rare Uzbek anti-cleric and pro-Communist magazine in Ottoman and partly in Cyrillic script, was published in Samarqand, Uzbekistan, in the tradition of Molla Nasraddin magazine in the early 1920s. A rare "Molla Nasreddinistic" magazine My Compassionate Mullah (??? ?????), was published in Ottoman script in Turkic language, and partly in Russian Cyrillic, in Samarqand, Uzbekistan. It includes sarcastic images against the clergy, and pro-Soviet and pro-Commuinsm propaganda. In 1924, the borders of political units in Central Asia were changed along ethnic lines determined by Vladimir Lenin’s Commissar for Nationalities, Joseph Stalin. In 1925 Uzbekistan became one of the republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Samarkand was the capital until 1930, when it was replaced by Tashkent. The magazine was created in the style of Molla Nasraddin magazine, an anti cleric and pro-Soviet Azerbaijani satirical magazine, published on 8 pages, in Tiflis, Tabriz and Baku in the Azeri and occasionally Russian languages, between 1906 and 1931. This probably first magazine of its style was highly influential in the Arabic world in the time of the split between the traditional religious sphere and the Russian-Communistic influence. We could not trace any examples of the magazine in the institutions worldwide.
