        Sample case of woolen swatches

1920. (CLOTHING) BRUNER WOOLEN COMPANY. Sample case of woolen swatches. New York: circa 1920. Original hinged black paper-covered cardboard box (28 by 11 by 7-1/2 inches), with embossed fold-down front flap and three compartments containing a total of 269 swatches mounted on style cards. $1800.Original salesman’s sample case, with 269 mounted swatches representing bolts of woolen fabric, sold wholesale to tailors all over the country, each swatch printed with the slogan “Our virgin wool guarantee insures superior tailoring and excellent wear.”In 1922, the Bruner Woolen Company of New York was said to be the largest woolen goods manufacturer in the world. With its primary mill in Winooski, Vermont and warehouses and display room space in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cincinnati, Kansas City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle, Bruner Woolens offered “quality woolens especially made for high class tailoring, serges and other fabrics by the yard.” “For some years before 1922, four corporations, Detmer Woolen Company, Bruner Woolen Company, Mason & Hanson, and Salzer & Wolf, had carried on in the United States sale of woolens and trimmings to tailors by supplying to the trade samples, mounted on style cards, which in turn were put into boxes with order blanks, envelopes addressed to the vendor and explanatory literature… In 1922 the four corporations conveyed their property, including trade-marks, to a new corporation organized under the name Detmer, Bruner & Mason. This company did not manufacture, but purchased woolens and trimmings in the market and sold them to retail merchants by the same means and in the same manner as the predecessor corporations had done” (Wawak Co. vs. Kaiser). Case moderately worn, cloth hinges holding, damage to only one or two swatches. A scarce example of marketing in the textile industry, in extremely good condition.

        LA GUIRLANDE DES MOIS

Meynial 1920 - 12cm x 8cm. The fourth almanac produced by George Barbier is a sumptuous little book. Silk covers with colour illustrations in pochoir by Barbier, all edges gilt. In the pictorial dustwrapper and slipcase. A fine copy of the book, in fine dustwrapper and slipcase. Patterned endpapers, pictorial title page decorative borders and chapter headings. Six pochoir colour plates in the typical Art Deco style one associates with Barbier's work. Guirlandes des Mois is a series of almanacs produced by Jules Maynial and illustrated by George Barbier, the delightful little books (five in total) were published annually between 1917 - 1921. Barbier was a keen book collector and his own collection included a series of seventeenth - early nineteenth century almanacs and it was this collection which inspired the design of the Guirlandes. The books contain an anthology of writings, bank pages for notes and a calendar. The illustrations are beautifully delicate, with covers, dustwrappers and box all containing different drawings. Beginning on the war years many of the illustrations reflect the times, with images of soldiers on leave wooing elegant young women. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Charming portrait photograph by Resines, (Maria de la Asunción Solange, ('Marisol', b. 1911, later Countess of Odiel), her sister FRANCESCA, ('Paca', b. 1913) and brother JOSÉ, ('Pepito', 1917-1970), the children of Fernando de Mesia y Fitz-James Stuart, (1881-1948, Count of Mora, later Duke of Tamames), and of his Countess Marie Solange, (1877-1943, née de Lesseps)]

1920 - unsigned, showing the children barefoot in short white clothes, inscribed on the mount, apparently in the Countess of Mora's hand, "Marie Sol 8 ans, Paca 7 ans, y Pepito Mora, 3 ans", 8¼" x 6" in mount 14¾" x 11", no place, Annotated on the verso that the inscription is by Queen Ena. Don Fernando was a nephew of Empress Eugénie (Queen Ena's godmother) on his father's side, and through his mother descended from the Dukes of Alba. His French-born wife descended from the famous engineer. The Count and Countess were staunch supporters of Queen Ena in the court rivalries of the 1920s and when she was in exile the Count sometimes helped out with hotel bills, saying "Ena has been very naughty". In 1933 Marisol was made Countess of Odiel and married Alfonso XIII's nephew the Infante José Eugenio, 1909-1966, (son of Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria and Spain, 1884-1958, by his first wife Maria Teresa, 1882-1912, the King's sister). Pepito succeeded his father as Duke of Tamames. From Queen Ena's private collection.

Shackleton 21st June 1920". Shackleton's own account of the infamous Endurance Expedition. In 1914, Shackleton and a 28-man crew had set out on the Endurance in the hope to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent ? an 1800 miles journey, sea to sea. However, in January 1915, due to exceptionally cold and icy conditions, the Endurance was trapped in ice. Ten months later, the pressure of the ice crushed the ship which sank, leaving Shackleton stranded some 1,600 km from any human activity. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts, Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (ODNB). Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal.

Constitution and Book of Laws, Made for the Government of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, Inc., and the African Communities League., of the World.

New York: 1920 - Pamphlet, 12mo, original printed pale blue wrappers, stapled, 40 pp. Very slight aging; near fine and an exceptional copy. Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was one of the most influential black leaders of the early 20th century. Unlike other black leaders, Garvey felt for blacks to really gain equality they would be better off going back to Africa. He was a strong champion of black separatism, feeling it was the only way to overcome racism, he even went as far as to propose alliance with white power groups, including the Ku Klux Klan (see An Appeal to the Soul of White America.). He felt the ends of the two groups were actually very similar. In 1914 Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement and Conservation Association and African Communities League, typically referred to as the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). This organization would probably have close to 75,000 members and would be dedicated to black advancement and uplift. Garvey was inspired by the ideas of Booker T. Washington, especially the notion of black enterprise. This pamphlet presents the by-laws of Garvey's organization, and is very scarce. The OCLC locates only two copies of this printing. While this edition is supposed to follow one published in July 1918, it is not clear if that edition was published. OCLC. ANB. #100979.$1150 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Poems and Poèmes, autres alliances.

Paris: printed by Keller for Emile-Paul Frères; and George H. Doran Co, New York, 14 February 1920 - Small quarto. Original wrappers, title label to front. Somewhat later glassine cover. faint toning around the edges but an excellent copy. First edition, first impression, number 224 of 680 copies. This is the first book in English (partially) by Paris-based American expatriate writer Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972). Known as the "Amazon" of Paris, she was one of the most influential lesbian and feminist writers of the period. Her life inspired Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, and her Paris salon at 20 rue Jacob was for 60 years the crucible of Left Bank culture (guests included Colette, Piere Louys, Mata Hari, Auguste Rodin, Ezra Pound, Jean Cocteau, T. S. Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Rainer Maria Rilke, Rabindranath Tagore, Nancy Cunard, Peggy Guggenheim, Caresse and Harry Crosby, Sylvia Beach and Isadora Duncan, to name but few). Barney promoted women's writing and formed an Académie des femmes in response to the all-male Académie française, while also supporting and inspiring male writers from Remy de Gourmont to Truman Capote.         A Seattle Flapper's Jazz Age Scrapbook

Seattle, WA 1920 - Oblong quarto (175 x 270 mm), 100 thick black pages. Contemporary purpose-made cloth scrapbook bound with a silk tie, title "photographs" in gilt to upper cover. Containing approximately 384 mounted original silver gelatin photographs (sized between 25 x 25 mm and 127 x 178 mm), a few with annotations indicating places, dates, and people; 9 real photo postcards; several newspaper clippings; and a greeting card. Some wear and bumping of the corners, a few photographs removed, occasional creases, splits, and chips to page edges, occasional damage to photographs. Very good condition. A wonderful scrapbook compiled by a young Seattle flapper named Lillian during the late teens, 1920s, and later, with nearly 400 photographs, many depicting adventures around the northwest coast. Lillian appears often in the album, a striking young woman with a boyish elegance, always impeccably dressed in up-to-date styles. In one of the earlier photos she appears in a late-Edwardian outfit with her hair up, but she apparently transitioned quickly to the flapper style, and appears in most of the images wearing classic 1920s fashions with her hair charmingly bobbed. In one small photo she is seen in an attractive Deco-style bathing suit and in others, on cruises and at the Queen City Yacht Club, she appears in yachting whites and sailor-style outfits. In the ukulele photo and some of the sailing shots she is even wearing trousers. Lillian and her friends appear to have been an outgoing bunch; included are photographs of musical events where Lillian plays the accordion, with a newspaper clipping showing their group performing at the yacht club. Friends appear in their nursing and Red Cross uniforms, with some photos taken on a children's ward. There are social gatherings; car trips along the Columbia River Highway, a cruise on the Princess Marguerite Steamship to Victoria, British Columbia (Lillian seems to have been fascinated by the icebergs); and numerous camping and fishing trips. A number of the photos were taken at what appears to be the family home in Seattle, a brand new Craftsman-style house, which would have been an important symbol of the family's upward mobility. Lillian and her family seem to have been animal lovers, as there are numerous photos of pets, including a boxer dog, a terrier, and cats with kittens - Lillian appears with the terrier in a series of images. There are also shots from around Seattle, including a series depicting huge drifts of snow, which may have been taken during the snowstorms of 1916, which left drifts of up to five feet, or 1920, when a storm deposited more than 18 inches. Some photos identify apartment buildings in Seattle and Los Angeles that are still standing today (220 Belmont Ave. in Seattle and 1616-1618 Main Street in LA), and there is a large, evocative photograph of a 1920s hardware store with stylish counter displays. Finally, the scrapbook continues into the 1930s and early 40s with a handful of photographs from that period scattered in amongst the other material. We have been unable to conclusively determine Lillian's last name, but it is possible that she was Lillian Christoffersen, a child of Norwegian immigrants who became a schoolteacher and was known to enjoy playing the accordion. Overall, this a fantastic photographic record of the life of a young woman and the changing fashions of one of the most exciting periods in American history. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
