John Wisden
Hi, Here we have a rare 1916 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. The 21st Wisden Hardback and the most expensive of the 20th Century. The rarest or second rarest since 1900. I have been agornising over which of two 1916s to keep as they are both in such amazing condition but to sum up this Wisden is as nice as the one I own in my master set. The lettering is always an issue (if you like shiny gold leaf) on 1916s , i guess they were rationed on the gold leaf in 1916, however the front board has very good gilt for a 1916. The spine is faded and no dot after the year which is correct. Small name to first page corner. The boards are very good , small line mark to the corner at the top of the front board but other than that , nice clean boards. Inside the hinges are very good, both are springy! Amazingly clean inside including the yellow pastedowns. Minimal foxing. No restoration. A lovely book. Rare,

Women in Medicine] Newsome, Edith
The Scientific Press, London, 1916. Scarce first edition of a Red Cross manual designed both for emergency workers and women in the home. Original publisher's cloth binding titled in red on spine and front board. Boards a bit rubbed and soiled, corners bumped. Faint offsetting to the endpapers. Inscribed by Edith Newsome on the front pastedown: "With the Author's Compliments, Edith Newsome." Another hand has added beneath it in pencil, "16. 10. 23," suggesting that this was presented in the year of publication. A scarce book institutionally and in trade, OCLC reports only 11 copies in libraries, this being the only one currently on the market. Edith Newsome's first major work on nursing, produced after she realized that her Red Cross lecture series could not provide complete enough information to train "those who have so nobly responded to the 'call of duty'; to do all that is in their power to tend and succour the brave men of our nation by proving themselves valuable and intelligent helpers." Indeed, Newsome's work was released two years into World War I -- the first modern war, which brought with it a horrifying number of previously unknown injuries and ailments. In addition to professional nurses, women enrolled to assist as Volunteer Aid Detachments (VADs) because there simply were not enough women with medical educations to serve the nation's need. The present work is a stirring acknowledgement of this. Comprehensive in training VADs and new nurses in field operations, it also contains information for women in the home, who confronted infection, illness, or injury and … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Rosenthal, Elias; Theodore Dreiser
New York. In 1916, Theodore Dreiser's autobiographical novel "Genius", which among other topics, examined traditional and modern views of sexual morality, was deemed blasphemous and obscene by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, and banned. This pamphlet, written by Elias Rosenthal, defends Dreiser's banned work with specific reference to the overreactions of vice societies to the work: "This brings me down to the action of the locally organized vice society in Cincinnati, which discovered in Theodore Dreiser's "The Genius" seventy five passages which it considered "lewd",and seventeen "profane", all of which when examined proved to be nothing more than accurate comments on passing phases of life. . what is needed is some strong bug powder, not for the purpose of sterilizing the book, but of dispersing its assailants." The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice threatened to prosecute the publishers on similar grounds. Sml. 8vo pamphlet, (nd) ca. 1915, 8pp. Original yellow wraps; no title at spine, with one horizontal fold and address and canceled stamp at rear cover, o/w very good. Addressed to George Nathan "of the Smart Set", founder and editor of the American Spectator and good friend to Dreiser and Ernest Boyd. OCLC: 29902821. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Pierre Reverdy

Jihad].
Berlin, 14. XI, 1916. Folio (469 × 314 mm). 3, (1) pp. Promoting jihad: official policy. The diplomat, orientalist, and historian Max von Oppenheim (1860-1946) had published a memorandum as early as 1914 on "revolutionizing the Islamic territories of our enemies", i.e. trying to persuade religious leaders in the Muslim world to call for a Holy War against colonial powers such as Britain and France. Allied to this was a campaign to try and radicalize Muslim prisoners of war (a mosque was even erected in one camp, Wünsdorf - the first ever built in Germany) through printed matter, such as the camp newspaper "El Dschihad". Circulation began on 5 March 1915, with editions produced in Arabic, Russian, and - the largest print-run - Tartar (reaching 91 issues, the last published on 22 October 1918). Similar newspapers, under different names, were also issued in Georgian, Hindi, and Urdu. The only holdings outside Germany located by WorldCat are at the Hoover Institution (Arabic, Russian, and Tartar editions) and the Library of Congress (Russian edition). Not in COPAC. - Toned due to paper stock; two small wormholes at head; creased where previously folded. - ZDB-ID 2079196-3. OCLC 643380726.

Valentin de Pedro
Buenos Aires Araujo Hnos Colección Sarmiento #1, 1916. In-8. 32p. Wrappers. Inscribed by the author to Eugenio C. Noe, witn Noe Ex-Libris. Authors first book. Rare. Valentín de Pedro (Tucumán, 1896-Buenos Aires, 1966) was a journalist, novelist, theatrical author, essayist and occasional poet. He lived in Madrid from the end of the 1910s until 1941, this year in which he was able to return to his native country after suffering the excesses and aftermath of the Civil War. He witnessed in the first person the resistance of the republican militias to the siege of the Spanish capital by Franco's troops and their triumph over Madrid at the end of March 1939. Given his affiliation with the CNT and his rants on Against the military rebellion published in Confederate newspapers such as El Sindicalista, CNT or Castilla Libre, the author is arrested in April 39 and taken first to Las Salesas prison and then to the death row gallery of the dreaded Porlier prison , where he spends several months. There he will live bitter days in the midst of a climate of tremendous misery and desolation, and will coincide with a series of personalities from the political, literary and journalistic fields that formed an important part of the Spanish intellectuality of the time. Upon his return to Argentina, the writer is given the task of recording his experiences of the war and his passage through the prisons of Franco. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

FRANCISCO DE GOYA Y LUCIENTES
Calcografía Nacional, Madrid, 1916. Materia: Colección de Aguafuertes. Goya. Los Proverbios. Arte. Tinta sepia y negra. Tirada limitada a 50 ejemplares.
Tinta sepia y negra. Tirada limitada a 50 ejemplares. PBS1
