The Gospel according of St Mark, printd in embossed lettering for the blind].

, National Institute for the Blind (Moon Society Branch), 1915 - Oblong in-folio (277 x 342 mm) 1 f.n.ch. avec le titre 'A Simplified System of Embossed Reading for the Use of the Blind', suivi de 91 feuillets imprimés en relief d'un seul côté avec l'évangile selon St Marc; demi-toile (reliure de l'époque).

"Dear Mr. Unwin / Permit me to express you my very best thanks for the pamphlets and books concerning the war which you do kindly continue to send me. Most of them are extremely valuable, and some of them I sent to Sasha and Boris to Petrograd; but I do not know yet whether they have reached them. Their letters reach us regularly in 11 or 12 days; but our letters remain sometimes 27 to 28 days on the journey, probably on account of the censorship. All letters coming from Russia are opened by the Russian Military Censorship, but are not delayed in transmission. There is a great awakening in Russia - even in that non-Russian - cosmopolitan and German city of Petrograd; so the previous letters of both Boris and Sasha were very sad on account of the pessimism, or indifferent state of mind at Petrograd. The Court, especially its feminine part, is of course pro-German, and the attitudes of a certain portion of the 'intellectuals' was one of sad pessimism. Thus the latest news from Boris and Sasha speak of a serious awakening and consciousness of the seriousness of the conditions. I think that the success of the Germans in Courland, and the conquest of Poland left indifferent, which the stupid attitude of the Russian Government towards the Ukrainian Autonomist tendencies in East Galicia could only provoke the deepest discontent [.]".

Obrazovanie Zemli i solnechnykh sistem [The Formation of the Earth and Solar Systems]

Kaluga: S. A. Semenov for the Author, 1915. Octavo (25.8 × 17.5 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; 16 pp. Illustrations. Only light wear to edges; very good. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (also Tsiolkovskii, Ciolkowski, or Ziolkowski; 1857-1935), the Russian aviation and astronautics pioneer, was one of the founding fathers of rocket science and an important inspiration to the Soviet space program. He was largely an autodidact who operated a small aerodynamics laboratory in his own apartment in provincial Kaluga; his early works were published by himself in small numbers and without outside funding and are today very scarce. Although he is now considered a major pioneer in his field, Tsiolkovsky failed to be acknowledged for his achievements for most of his career, gaining some recognition only in the early 1930s. His work is especially interesting insofar as it is not only scientifically motivated, but closely connected to the Russian cultural and philosophical movement of Cosmism. Much of Tsiolkovsky's inspiration for striving toward space travel can be traced to his early encounters with the Russian cosmist Nikolai Fedorov (1829-1903). In addition to his scientific projects, he also authored numerous pamphlets of a more utopian, socio-political, and philosophical nature. The present work presents five shorter essays on his cosmist theories, as well as the designs and construction drawings of his proposed space flight capsule, made of corrugated sheet metal. Interestingly, the work acknowledged God as the "prime mover" of the universe, while later publications take a more abstract view of the origin of the universe. Furthermore, Tsiolkovsky devotes much attention to questions of education, knowledge, and international communication. He even proposes the introduction of a new universal alphabet and language. He suggests beginning by teaching Russian children to use the Latin alphabet, and proposes English or French as lingua franca. Scarce, with OCLC only showing the copy at Harvard.
