1915. Very Good. J. LACOSTE (engraver). Collection of 94 heliographs. Madrid, J. Lacoste (engraver), no date (circa 1915). Large stiff-board parchment binding (38 x 30 cm) with a gold top edge. It contains 94 heliographs reproducing works from the Prado Museum by, among others, Velázquez, Goya or Durero. The engravings are printed on strong cardboard-style paper. Rare works, well preserved. Probably this series of engravings was an institutional commission. Lacoste's workshop was active in the first third of the 20th century. Very heavy - probably will need additional coast.

ROBERTSON, Dennis Holme.
London: P. S. King, 1915. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered gilt, front board lettered in blind. Spine frayed at foot, head of rear joint split, joints and corners rubbed, boards slightly soiled. Bookblock cracked in the gutter in a couple of places, small adhesion to the last leaf, transferring part of the imprint to the facing page, a few edges chipped First edition of Robertson's dissertation, published after research and a fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge. Robertson is known chiefly for his contributions to the study of the relationship between money, the trade cycle, and economic growth. 'In the Study of Industrial Fluctuation, he used historical evidence to argue that economic cycles had real (that is, related to investment and savings) as opposed to monetary or psychological causes and that some degree of fluctuation was a necessary part of the growth process. It was a thesis that challenged orthodox thinking in Britain and established Robertson as a possible precursor of real business cycle theory' (ODNB). Dennis Holme Robertson (1890-1963) made his most important contribution to economics in the fields of monetary theory and industrial fluctuation. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1908, initially to study classics, but then changed to economics in 1910. Robertson became a pupil of John Maynard Keynes, thus beginning a collaboration that was to last over twenty years. From the library of William Beveridge, with whom Harold Wilson worked from 1937: "Wilson's interest in economics turned in a statistical and micro direction. The accumulation … [Click Below for Full Description]

(RACKHAM, Arthur ) DICKENS, Charles
London: William Heinemann; J. B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia, , 1915. Octavo (198 x 141 mm). Finely bound by Bayntun-Riviere in red morocco, titles and elaborate decoration to spine gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Title page printed in red and black, colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates all printed directly on plate paper with captioned tissue guards and black and white illustrations in the text. A fine copy. First trade edition, early issue, with the frontispiece printed directly on white plate paper, the date 1915 on the title verso. Although the bibliographies state that the first impression of the trade edition has the frontispiece mounted on dark green paper, in our experience it is invariably white, and we recently sold a presentation copy inscribed by Rackham dated 1915 with the frontispiece printed directly on plate paper, as here, which suggests that this is an early issue.

Cloth. A wonderful Smith College rarity. The Class of 1915 yearbook, SIGNED BY OVER 60 MEMBERS OF THE SENIOR CLASS (to be precise, 3 of the seniors have initialed their names and 59 have either signed their names in full and/or written their nicknames right next to their senior portraits). This represents 20% of the graduating class, an unusually large percentage for a yearbook of this vintage. The yearbook itself has held up nicely as well: clean, solid and VG+ in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-insignia to the front panel. Very light scuffing along the rear panel, internally several signatures tender (but still perfectly sturdy). Quarto, top-edge gilt. Wonderful local ads at the rear. Very Good +. Dimock, Anthony W
Outing Company, New York, 1915. First edition of Dimock's autobiography, including his great success in cornering the gold market, also hunting grizzly bear, buffalo, deer, waterfowl, early wildlife photography, and some mention of fishing for tarpon, trout and salmon. Octavo, original blue cloth, gilt titles to the spine, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Melville A. Clark Dear Melville; If one must choose between the wilds of Wall Street and the gentleness of the wilds the wise man will take the woods. A.W. Dimock The Happy Valley Oct. 18,1917." In near fine condition, with some offsetting to the front free endpaper. "Wall Street and the Wilds contains the sage of the rise and fall and rise and fall of a Wall Street gold trader, options seller, stock manipulator, developer of the clearing house, pool operator, Steamship promoter, real estate developer of Elizabeth, New Jersey, telegraph line builders, railroad builder, hunter, photographer and naturalist from 1850 to 1915. Everything talked about is totally a propos of current techniques in Wall Street. Dimock was a minister's son born in 1840 who went to Andover and came to Wall Street at 15 and got his start scalping odd lots in insurance stocks. He developed a system of selling gold every 1/8 up and buying it every eight down. He became the Little Napoleon of Wall Street and dominated the gold exchange the way the big grain companies dominate the grain market today, using some of the same techniques. He made so much money that it was easy come, easy go, and he lost … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hueffer, (Ford) Ford Maddox
John Lane Company, London, 1915. First edition, first issue without the 16 pp. of advertisements.of this literary highspot, one of the great novels of the first half of the twentieth century. Octavo, original cloth. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Set just before World War I, the novel is told using a series of flashbacks in non-chronological order, through a rather unreliable narrator; for as it turns out, the story is not what we are led to believe at the beginning. The novel's original title was "The Saddest Story", from the novels opening lines "This is the saddest story I have ever heard"; however, with the onset of World War I, the publishers asked Ford for a new title, to which he sarcastically suggested "The Good Soldier", and so it was named. It was named by The Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2015, the BBC ranked The Good Soldier 13th on its list of the 100 greatest British novels. Montgomery, L[ucy]. M[aud]
1915. With frontispiece and cover in colour by H. Weston Taylor. Boston: The Page Company, 1915. Original light grey-green cloth with color portrait affixed to front cover. First Edition, first impression, of the third of the eight "Anne Shirley books," following ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1908) and ANNE OF AVONLEA (1909); the fourth title, following this one, would be ANNE'S HOUSE OF DREAMS (1917). For the first three titles in the series, the order of publication equals the chronological order of Anne's saga; beginning with the fourth (the eighth and last would not be until 1939), the chronology jumps around.ANNE OF THE ISLAND mainly covers Anne's years at Redmond College in Nova Scotia -- where she realizes she may live elsewhere but she is still "of" Prince Edward Island. The year after this was published, Montgomery had the Canadian publisher McClelland publish her volume of verse -- and Page of Boston (who held world rights to her books) was upset, so much so that Frederick Stokes of New York became her publisher beginning with the 1917 ANNE book. This is a near-fine copy (just a touch of soil, with a few tiny scrapes on the front cover illustration).

I. N. Phelps Stokes
Robert H. Dodd 1915-1928, New York. Brown mottled calf, with the gilt-stamped first seal of New Amsterdam on the upper cover and the modified seal approved by the New York Arts Commission in 1915 on the lower cover; 1000s of pages; large thick quartos (11.25 x 8.25 in.); five raised bands; burgundy labels on the spines with gilt titles; t.e.g. ONE OF ONLY 42 SETS ON JAPANESE VELLUM PAPER, and rare thus. (The regular edition of 360 copies was printed on Holland paper.) The title pages and head and tail pieces are issued in two states, the second signed by the engraver Sidney Lawton Smith. Profusely illustrated, The Iconography of Manhattan Island is generally considered to be the greatest work to document the history of the City of New York – specifically Manhattan – and still unsurpassed in detail and scope. Written and compiled by New York architect, urbanist and important print collector I. N. [Isaac Newton] Phelps Stokes (1867-1944), his stated aim was "to collect, to condense, and to arrange systematically the facts and incidents which are of the greatest consequence and interest in the history of New York City, with special reference to its topographical features and to the physical development of the island; and to illustrate this material by the best reproductions obtainable of important and interesting contemporary maps, plans, views, and documents; in other words, to produce a book dealing with the physical rather than the personal side of the city’s history" (Vol. I preface, p. [ix]). "Unrivalled to this day, the book is, first and foremost, a visual banquet. Hund … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lawrence, D H.
London; Methuen & Co Ltd, 1915. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp., vii, [1], 463, [1], [4] catalogue. Publishers' blue-green cloth with gilt titles and decoration to spine and titles in blind to upper board. Cover cloth lightly stained with small split central upper joint, rubbing to edge and a little rippling to upper board. Front end-papers and half-title damp stained; minor half-inch tear at rear inner hinge. A very good copy. "Methuen published The Rainbow in September 1915, but it got savage reviews, most of which attacked what was understood as the book's overt sexuality, and it was withdrawn from sale. At Bow Street magistrates' court on 13 November it was banned as obscene (Lawrence having no opportunity to defend it). Its religious language, emotional and sexual explorations of experience, and sheer length had given its readers problems, but it was Ursula's lesbian encounter with a schoolteacher in the chapter 'Shame' which had finally condemned it in the eyes of the law and of a country now focused on conflict" (ODNB). As a result the book was withdrawn from sale just two months after publication and half the print run of 1250 copies were destroyed. Despite the initial reaction, The Rainbow was Number 48 in the influential Random House Modern Library 100 Best Books of the Twentieth Century and the rare first edition is much sought after. ZINCOGRAFICA, LA.
Milan: La Zincografica, c.1915. Sheet 250 x 345mm. Ink stamp. A propaganda sheet attacking the Austro-Hungarian Empire, showing it as an octopus with its tentacles wrapped around the various territories it had absorbed, including the former Italian regions of Trentino and Istria. Although Italy had joined the Entente powers against Germany and Austria in May 1915, public opinion was still divided. Not only did the Socialist parties oppose the war, but the Italian government also had existing diplomatic grievances with both Britain and France.
