        Victory. An Island Tale.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1915. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt titles to spine. With the dust jacket. A very good copy in the jacket, just a little chipped at spine ends, and with no loss to the striking front panel. First edition, first impression, first state with comma after "Essex Street" on title page imprint. A striking copy in the very scarce dust jacket, which marks a sea change in British publishers' practices in using jackets as marketing tools. Earlier Methuen jackets typically consisted of lettering and an illustrative design based on the blocking of the binding. Only two years earlier, the 1913 Methuen edition of John Oxenham's Bees in Amber bore the jingle: "This outer wrap is only meant / To keep my coat from detriment. / Please take it off, and let me show / The better one I wear below." But in 1915 Methuen issued Conrad's Victory in a jacket with a specially commissioned front panel illustration which was based neither on the underlying cover nor on an illustration in the book itself, a significant moment in the history of the dust jacket.

        A House of Pomegranates

London and New York: Methuen and Co. Ltd. and Bretanos, [1915]. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition thus. Includes 16 tipped in color illustrations. The title page, illustrations, endpapers, and initials were all designed by Jessie M. King. Scottish illustrator Jessie Marion King (1875 - 1949) also designed jewelry and fabric, wrote books, and painted pottery. Discouraged from creating art due to her family's strict religious beliefs, she often hid drawings when she was a child. She ultimately attended the Glasgow School of Art anyway - at which she received many awards and her work is still renowned today. This book has been expertly restored using the original red cloth boards with gilt title and decoration to the front board. The spine is of matching modern red cloth without title or gilt work. Wear to the edges of the boards, especially the right edge of the front board, and corners. Dampstain to cloth on rear board. Offsetting to endpapers and occasional smudge marks to margins, but the interior is clean and bright overall. Minor creasing to edges of front endpapers. Attractive despite noted damage, and priced accordingly. 162 pages. CHILD/010318.

An Alphabet of T O T : Train Omnibus Tram

(London): Johnson, Riddle & Co. [for Underground Electric Railways], 1915. Scarce publicity pamphlet for the Underground Electric Railways Company, designed by poster artist Charles Pears, whose style helped define English mass transit marketing in the first half of the twentieth century. Produced to raise funds for transportation workers' families during World War I, this modern alphabet aims to combine "advertisement" and "art," as noted under the letter "A." The verses celebrate the city of London and its people, while describing the role of public transportation in everyday life: "M is the Map which will make every way of the mighty Metropolis plain as the day." In order for each letter to receive its own page, the letter "K" (for kilowatt) gets two, leaving the rear wrapper to "Z." A lithographed poster of Pears's entire alphabet (minus one "K") sold for over 3000 pounds at the 2012 Christies London Transport Museum Sale. OCLC locates one copy of this original pamphlet, at the University of Manchester. In 2017, the London Transport Museum issued a reprint, calling Pears's designs "icons of early twentieth-century London life." A very good example of a scarce and ephemeral production. Oblong pamphlet measuring 5.25 x 8.5 inches, staple-bound. Fourteen color lithographed leaves, including wrappers. Moderate edgewear, closed tear below lower staple.

        The Songs and Sonnets.

London: Duckworth & Co,, [1915]. Quarto (238 x 175 mm). Later 20th-century blue crushed morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, spine gilt to compartments and lettered in gilt, covers panelled in gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Frontispiece and 12 tipped-in colour plates with captioned tissue guards, illustrations and decorations printed in pale green throughout, all by Charles Robinson. Minor creasing to a few tissue-guards. A fine copy. First edition illustrated by Charles Robinson, in a handsome binding.         The Dreamer of Dreams

London, New York, Toronto: Hodder & Stoughton, 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Dulac, Edmund. Quarto size, 189 pp., 6 color plates. A breathtakingly lovely example of the incomparable work of Edmund Dulac (1882-1953), who truly needs no introduction; he was the only illustrator of his day on a par with Arthur Rackham and was known for his exquisite colors, oriental influence and versatility in his artistic endeavors. This book, Hodder and Stoughton's featured "New art gift book" of the year for 1915, is immediately recognizable for its frontispeice illustration of the snow maiden accompanied by white bears, which "makes one catch one's breath at its sheer beauty". The beautiful frontispiece was a supplement page in Hodder and Stoughton's "Christmas Bookman," which also featured a photograph of Dulac, a review of the book and its illustrations and several lavish ads. The pictures were described as "vivid and beautifully imaginative paintings."___DESCRIPTION: Original grey cloth with gilt lettering and sword design of the title-page in navy blue, similarly decorated at the backstrip, title-page printed in olive-green and grey, six colour plates mounted on tan-grey art paper, framed with three-rule green borders, tissue guards with green captions; quarto size (25.4 by 18.5 cm), pagination: [i-viii] 1-181.___CONDITION: This volume can almost be called fine; the binding appears to be fresh out of the binder's shop, with straight, unrubbed corners, a strong square text block with solid hinges, and the gilt on the front board exceptionally bright; the plates and tissue guards bright and complete, and the volume free of prior owner markings; fine except for some minor sun-toning to the backstrip and very faint scattered foxing. Lacking the rarely seen dust jacket, this copy is near fine, difficult to come by in such good condition.___CITATION: Hughey 38, true first edition, in grey rather than blue cloth, with gilt lettering to the upper board, 181 pp. vs. 177 pp. of later editions.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.         'Frilled Lizard' A vintage sepia-toned carbon print on the original flush-cut thick card mount

The mounted photograph has recently been hinge-mounted and matted in archival material, ready for framing (visible image size 440 × 320 mm, with trifling blemishes to the edges now behind the mat); apart from two minute spots of surface loss near the left-hand edge, the photograph is in excellent condition. This print comes from the original 1915 Australian exhibition of Hurley photographs; this was a slightly enlarged version of the London exhibition held earlier in the same year. The full title of the Australian exhibition catalogue is 'Exhibition of Unique Photographic Pictures taken during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Also other Photographic Studies by Frank Hurley' (small octavo, 16 pages plus 8 full-page plates and the title-wrappers; printed in Adelaide by G. Hassell & Son). A small advertisement appeared in the Adelaide 'Advertiser' on Saturday 25 September 1915, announcing a 'South Polar Exhibit.... until October 6. This Exhibition is your only opportunity of viewing Historical Relics of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, and Frank Hurley's Unexcelled Photographic Reproductions'. The images were sourced primarily from Mawson's 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, but there were also several sections of non-polar images as well, under the headings 'Northern Territory, Australia', 'Java', and 'Miscellaneous'. The label of the Fine Art Society, New Bond Street, London is on the verso of this print (with the London catalogue reference number 139 and the title added in ink; it was number 132 in the Australian catalogue). This photograph comes from the whirlwind 6000-mile trip he made with fellow-adventurer Francis Birtles through northern Australia from mid-April to the end of July 1914. Provenance: from the personal collection of Sir Douglas Mawson (with his certified estate stamp on the verso), and by descent.

        The Adventures of Chunder Loo

Illustrated by Lionel Lindsay. Sydney: Blyth & Platt, 1915 Quarto, illustrated card boards (lightly creased), cloth spine, light handling marks but overall a very good copy of one of Lionel Lindsay's rarest books. The adventures of Chunder Loo is a collection of humorous verses penned by O'Ferrall and illustrated by Lindsay first published as advertisements for Cobra Boot Polish in The Bulletin  in the early twentieth century. Proving to be very popular, Blyth & Platt (owners of Cobra Boot Polish) published them in book format in late 1915, the book was printed by John Sands in Sydney and entered into legal deposit in 1916. Each page stands alone as its own witticism, however during the course of the series a journey evolves as the shoe shiner Chunder Loo of Akim Foo sails on The R. M. S. Cobra along with his companions Terrier Dog and Koala Bear. The trio travel through Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the gold fields of Western Australia, before sailing via Colombo and Suez to cruise through Italy, Spain and then arriving in London, all the while demonstrating the advantages of the Cobra brand of boot polish. While in London they encounter a 'militant suffragette', and, dressed in uniform are inspected by Kitchener before they depart for the Great War, where they spend about a third of the book's contents in a variety of services. Rare and in very good condition.

Photo Album]: Hunting and Fishing in New York State 1915-1923

      - Oblong octavo. String tied flexible cloth with "Photographs" stamped in blind on the top board. Modest edgewear on the boards, near fine. Contains 141 mostly sepia-tone gelatin silver photographs. Images are various sizes ranging mostly between 2" x 3" and 3" x 3.5", with several larger, mostly mounted between three and six to the page and largely captioned. Some modest fading on some of the images, one with a touch of damage, but most are near fine or better. A well-photographed album of rural images, the first page devoted to prize cattle (a few other images of cattle and horses appear) but about half of the images are devoted to hunting, trapping, and fishing in the Adirondacks, mostly between 1922 and 1923, with a few others from earlier dates. The hunting images show catches of fish, fox, skunks, muskrats, deer, mink, as well as gun-toting men, and several of hunting dogs (all it seems named "Uncas"). Most of the rest of the album is devoted to images of attractive and cheerful younger people on boats or on trips in automobiles, mostly to rural areas (with Uncas present!). An engaging, interesting, and largely subject specific group of images.

Die Verwandlung [The Metamorphosis]; In: Die Weissen Blätter

Leipzig: Der Weissen Bücher, 1915. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST APPEARANCE OF A MASTERPIECE OF WESTERN LITERATURE, PRECEDING THE FIRST BOOK EDITION. "Kafka read the first section of his 'bug piece' (Wanzensache) aloud to friends on November 24, 1912, and again on December 15. People started talking about it, and Kafka received a query from publisher Kurt Wolff in March 1913 on the recommendation of Kafka's friend Franz Werfel. Franz Blei, the literary editor of the new avant-garde journal Die weissen Blätter, expressed interest, and Robert Musil wrote as well, soliciting the novella for the more established Die neue Rundschau. But months passed before Kafka had a clean manuscript ready for submission, and then World War I intervened, causing further delays... In the spring of 1915, René Schickele took over as editor-in-chief of Die weissen Blätter, and with Max Brod's help, Kafka placed the story there. It came out in October 1915, and then appeared in December 1915 (though dated 1916) as a slender volume published by Kurt Wolff Verlag in Leipzig" (Susan Bernofsky, The New Yorker).IN: Die Weissen Blätter, 2 Jahrgang, October 1915, pp. 1177-1230. The whole issue (October 1915) offered. Leipzig: Der Weissen Bücher, 1915. Octavo, original wrappers; custom cloth box. Mild foxing to wrappers, a little wear at the spine ends. A rare, well-preserved copy in the original wrappers of the true first printing; considerably more rare than the first book edition.

Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane.

Vieweg & Sohn, Braunschweig 1915 - 8vo (210 x 136 mm). iv, [2], 94 pp., 20 illustr. in text. Three-quarter cloth over marbled boards, with titled paper label and shelf-mark label to spine, interior clean and unfoxed, library ink stamps to title-page. Provenance: Handels-Hochschulkurse der Stadt Nürnberg. ----- DSB XIV, 217; Norman 2192 (journal issue). - First edition in book form of the famous work on the continental drift, the mainwork of Wegener. The text appeared first in Petermanns Mitteilungen 1912. Later editions appeared in 1920,1922 and 1929; foreign editions after 1922. Wegener began his university career at the physical institute of the University Marburg in 1909, where he worked until 1919. After his habilitation in the fields of astronomy, meteorology and cosmic physics in Marburg, he became the director of the local observatory in 1910 and in parallel worked as a lecturer at the physical institute. Wegener became widely known for his pioneering theory on continental drift, which he published in two papers in 1912, both entitled "Die Entstehung der Kontinente" (The origin of continents). Although it was thought ludicrous at first, it has since been confirmed and is now quite acclaimed. In 1915 he published a book-length extension of his work on continental displacements now entitled "Die Entstehung der Kontinente und Ozeane." Because of the First World War, Wegener's book went unnoticed outside Germany. In 1922, however, a third (revised) edition was translated into English, French, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish, pushing Wegener's theory of continental drift to the forefront of debate in the earth sciences. The present first edition is much rarer than the journal issue. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
