BROOKE Rupert
1915. [Edited by Edward Marsh.] Frontispiece portrait after Sherrill Schell. First edition. 8vo., original black cloth, printed label on spine. London, Sidgwick & Jackson. Inscribed by Edward Marsh to Brooke's fellow Dymock poet W.W. Gibson, 12 days before the date of publication ?Wilfrid from Eddie June 4th 1915.? Spine somewhat darkened and label a little chipped. Gibson was one of Brooke's three literary executors, and was also a significant beneficiary of Brooke's estate: in a letter to Eddie Marsh as Brooke was setting off 1913 to North America and the Pacific he placed Gibson first in the list of things he was commending into Marsh's keeping, ahead of Cathleen Nesbitt, The Nine Muses, and the Spirit of Wisdom and Goodness. Albuquerque: Cattle Sanitary Board of NM, 1915. Clean copy from my private collection of rare books. I am turning 76 and my days in the saddle are over. Cattle Sanitary Board, Albuquerque, 1915. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. New Mexico Brand Book 1915. no author, published by the Cattle Sanitary Board of New Mexico in 1915. 508 pp of brands + 118 pp index + 30 pp "Live Stock Laws of the State of New Mexico" + 2 pp index. 8" x 4 1/2". This is the first statehood brand book. Boards and binding in unusually fine condition. The condition of most of these is pretty rough as these books were meant to be used in the field by the cattle inspectors. This book has probably seen the inside of a saddle bag, pocket of a slicker and wherever else it would be stashed while on the job. As such, it is an artifact of the cattle trade as well as a book. A book dealer remarked about other copies that, "Of the 5 or 6 copies I have handled in my career, all but one were in rough condition.". [Attributes: First Edition]

[African-Americana] [Emancipation] [Chicago]
Chicago, 1915. In celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Lincoln's death, the city of Chicago hosted the National Half Century Anniversary Exposition and Lincoln Jubilee, to celebrate emancipation and the cultural achievements of African-Americans. The event was held at the Coliseum on August 23 - September 22, 1915. The Illinois legislature appropriated $75,000 for the month-long celebration. Seventeen states appointed African American delegates to attend the event as representatives. Delegates from other countries participated as well. Bishop Samuel Fallows, the English-born clergyman and Union Army Colonel, spent a decade promoting and organizing the event, urging states such as New York to appoint representatives, and encouraging Chicago's religious leaders to attend. Several hundred pastors from African-American churches did attend, along with members of their congregations, and most contemporary accounts of the jubilee advertise speeches by African-American religious leaders. Charles F. Gunther, a local candy manufacturer and collector of Lincoln memorabilia, lent his collection to the event (it was later purchased by the Chicago Historical Society). The event's organizers anticipated close to half a million attendees. Though we find no record of actual attendance, contemporary reports show crowds of tens of thousands attending at a time. Despite the large undertaking and historical significance of the event, few relics of the exhibition have survived. OCLC lists two copies of the official program for the event. The official report of the event, History and Rep … [Click Below for Full Description]

KING, L. Melendez (T. Thomas Fortune)
Washington, D.C, 1915. Typed Letter Signed on the stationary of King's legal office. Measuring 8.5" x 11". Old folds from mailing with very slight toning at the folds, else near fine. King, a respected African-American lawyer in Washington, DC was representing Fortune in his dispute over the number of shares in a newspaper controlled by Fortune. King here informs Fortune, living in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, that he will need to come to Washington for a deposition and the court proceedings. He also was expecting a $10 retainer but apparently Fortune was out of funds and King notes that he'll take part of the retainer in advertising in Fortune's newspaper: "I am running one publication in the Washington Sun which pays $5.00 of the retainer fee and would thank you very much to send me the other $5.00." Fortune was an important African-American journalist, owning *The New York Age*, a ghost-writer for Booker T. Washington, and the editor of Washington's first autobiography, *The Story of My Life and Work*. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Conan Doyle, Arthur
London: Smith, Elder, 1915. 8vo, pp. 306 – advertisements at rear. Original red boards, lettered in gilt. Edges uncut. Frontispiece by FrankWiles. Offsetting to endpapers, and some foxing to the preliminaries, title page and early pages of text. Corners bumped, some marking to boards, spine a little faded and with some wear to spine ends. Binding a little shaken, but holding firm. First UK edition, published by Smith Elder three months earlier in the US. The final Sherlock Holmes novel. Frank Wiles, who provides the frontispiece, drew many of the illustrations for Holmes's appearances in The Strand magazine. Doyle thought Wiles came closest to the Holmes likeness he had always imagined — which, if Wiles' work here is any guide, was very much like Basil Rathbone. A very presentable copy.

SABATINI, Rafael
Martin Secker, London, 1915. First edition. Some modest spotting to the boards, lettering rubbed but easily readable, a near very good copy lacking the rare dustwrapper. Along with *Captain Blood* and *Scaramouche*, one of a trio of swashbuckling novels that helped to define the genre. This was the basis for one of the great silent adventure films, directed in 1924 by Frank Lloyd and featuring Milton Sills as the Sea Hawk, with Enid Bennett, Lloyd Hughes, Wallace MacDonald, Marc McDermott, and Wallace Beery. Also well-known is the 1940 Michael Curtiz swashbuckler with Errol Flynn, which kept the Sabatini title but used an original story-line loosely based on the exploits of Sir Francis Drake and modified to draw obvious parallels to England on the verge of WWII. JULIA WARD HOWE
1915. Autograph Manuscript, n.d. [ca. 1882], tipped into Laura E. Richards and Maude Howe Elliott, Julia Ward Howe, 1819-1910, 2 vols. Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1915. First edition. Two volumes in original cloth-backed boards and the scarce dustwrappers and original slipcase. Copy #438 of 450 copies of the Large-Paper Edition. [x],392,[2]; [x],434,[2] pp. "I believe in suffrage. I believe in the great awakening by the womanly soul a conscience which will rise up like a flood, & sweep away the petty & effete prejudices."This biography of Julia Ward Howe by two of her daughters, assisted by a third, is illustrated with plates and portraits, including a facsimile manuscript of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." It won the 1917 Pulitzer Prize for Biography. Special edition, including a page handwritten by Howe on women's suffrage. Howe refers to her first interest in suffrage "about fourteen years ago." She helped found the New England Woman Suffrage Association in 1868, so we date it as ca. 1892, 14 years later. But she might consider her interest in suffrage to have started a bit earlier, right around the end of the Civil War. Complete transcript of Autograph Manuscript"let me finish, as I began, with saying that I believe in suffrage. I believed in it, with unavoidable doubts, when I first began to work for it, perhaps fourteen years ago. I believe in it now without doubt or misgiving. And I no longer believe in it as an abstract right to be dreamed of by philosophers but more to be embodied in humane legislation. I believe in the great awakening by the wo … [Click Below for Full Description]
