ALS from Jack London's widow Charmian London (dated on the one month anniversary of Jack London's death)

1916, Book Condition: Very Good PlusAutograph letter signed in black ink on card stock, 7 x 11 cm, dated Dec. 22, 1916. Written recto and verso entirely in Charmian London's hand, together with the note's original mailing envelope, also addressed by Charmian. The envelope is neatly opened at the top, retains the flap, and has only minor soiling and wear. The enclosed card has minor soil and a faint crease to the upper right corner. Sent from Glen Ellen, CA in reply to a letter of condolence she received after her husband's death from Captain Samuel W. Noyes of Texas. The letter opens "Dear People: -", Charmian London then expresses her "heart's best thanks" for their "letter of the 7th" and states near the end "It's a bad thing / Jack was badly poisoned some way." (London's Death Certificate names uraemia following renal colic - ie. kidney failure - as the cause of his death. The Cambridge Guide to English Literature [1996] states '. ..he was an unhappy man who could not reconcile his own success with the things he had seen and endured. He died at the age of 40, perhaps by sucide.'). Thus an unpublished letter from Charmian London written on the one month anniversary of her husband's death, speaking openly to his being "poisoned". Of note is that Jack and Charmian London Correspondence and Papers, of the Utah State University Special Collections and Archives Manuscript Collection, also hold correspondence with Noyes, S.W. dated 1915 July 1, in box 8, folder 5 of their collections.

        Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie.

. Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1916. 8vo (23.2 x 15.8 cm). 64 pp. Contemporary quarter crimson calf over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. Original printed wrappers bound in.l The first description of Einstein's "general theory of relativity"and the first dealing with gravity, not to be confused with his 1905 introduction of the more limited "special relativity". This is the official "Sonderdruck" (offprint) from the "Annalen der Physik", Band 49, printed by Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig, with their number 314 on the title page verso (i.e. the true first edition with the pages numbered [1]-64). It includes a preface and an index that are not present in the Annalen-version. According to Weil, "This separate edition is printed on good, strong paper, the wrappers are of strong material too (163 x 243 mm) and it is described now as "t h e o r i g i n a l e d i t i o n" of this classic paper. ... There are several anastatic reprints of it". The rear wrapper lists seven other Barth publications, nearly all on physics and written by Wien, Planck, and Wiener, ending with Wiener, 1909, and Ziehen, 1916. There is also a little known later (1919) reprint, not listed in Weil, which is also dated "1916". However, in that edition the rear wrapper publication list ends with Lorentz (1919), and Wien (1919)! A clean copy, very slightly trimmed, otherwise unaltered. It is rare to see a copy with the contents and wrappers in such a good state. Horblit, 26c; Weil, 80a; PMM, 408..

Studies Based on the Colours and Magnitudes in Stellar Clusters

Washington DC: Carnegie Institution, , 1916. First Paper: The General Problem of Clusters. Second Paper: Thirteen Hundred Stars in the Hercules Cluster (Messier 13). Third Paper: A Catalogue of 311 Stars in Messier 67. Contributions from the Mount Wilson Solar Observatory Nos. 115, 116, and 177. Octavo. Original light greenish-blue wrappers printed in black. Charts and diagrams throughout. Light dampstain to edge of upper wrapper, wrappers a little rubbed at the edges with a couple of short splits to the upper wrapper, contents faintly toned in the margins. An excellent copy. First separate edition. The first three papers in Harlow Shapley's monumental, multi-part analysis of globular clusters of stars, from which he estimated the size and shape of the Milky Way galaxy. Though his final estimate was off due to the dimming of the clusters by dust clouds, he was the first to realise that the Milky Way was much larger than believed and that our solar system was on its periphery, not at the centre. This is now a key part of the Copernican principle, which states that the Earth is not in a favoured position in the universe.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1916. First edition. Very Good +. A Very Good+ copy with light wear at the spine ends and corners, an early gift inscription on the front end paper and the rear hinge starting, but unrepaired. Otherwise an attractive copy with bright gilt and clean, unfoxed pages. The author's first novel, a semi-autobiographical work, that laid the groundwork for his masterpiece, "Ulysses." This novel is more accessible than some of his later work. It tracks the physical, emotional and psychological growth of a young Joyce as he searches for his voice and his path in life, culminating with the decision to pursue his art abroad: "I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race." "It is a mosaic of jagged fragments that does altogether render with extreme completeness the growth of a rather secretive, imaginative boy in Dublin. The technique is startling, but on the whole it succeeds." -- H. G. Wells. Very Good +.

        Eigenh. Stellungnahme mit U.

Wien Hetzendorf, 24. IV. 1916.. 2 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 4to..

Offprint

1916. Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Ein einfaches Experiment zum Nachweis der Ampèreschen Molekularströme. Offprint from Verhandlung der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft 18 (1916). 173-177pp. 230 x 157 mm. Original printed wrappers. Fine copy. First Edition, Offprint Issue. In 1915 Einstein and Dutch physicist Wander Johannes de Haas conducted gyromagnetic experiments leading to the discovery of the Einstein-de Haas effect, which corresponds to the mechanical rotation induced in a ferromagnetic cylinder suspended inside a coil when an impulse of electric current is sent through the coil. Einstein was very enthusiastic about the experimental results, stating that he and de Haas had “given firm proof of the existence of Ampère’s molecular currents” (quoted in Pais, Subtle is the Lord, pp. 245-246). After his collaboration with de Haas ended, Einstein published the present paper on the Einstein-de Haas effect, proposing a new experimental method for determining gyromagnetism. The Einstein-de Haas effect is now known to reveal a relationship between magnetism, angular momentum and electron spin; however, this was not understood at the time, as electron spin was not discovered until the 1920s. This particular copy includes 10 of the original 12 prints, with #1 (Main Street Looking West) and #3 (Blast Furnace, Charlotte) missing. The prints are all signed and dated in pencil by Cassebeer, and remain in very good condition. There is light dampstaining to the interior text, including the title and signature pages. The original gray binding, with the title on a paper label, has light wear and scuffing, along with dampstaining to the back cover. A relatively scarce collection. We wish it were complete too, but 10 out of 12 will do. . Fair. 1916.

Ein einfaches Experiment zum Nachweis der Ampèreschen Molekularströme. Offprint

1916 - Einstein, Albert (1879-1955). Einstein was very enthusiastic about the experimental results, stating that he and de Haas had "given firm proof of the existence of Ampère’s molecular currents" (quoted in Pais, Subtle is the Lord, pp. Advertisement Poster for the Newspaper "Pesti Hírlap"

Légrády Testvérek M?intézete (1916), Budapest - Lithographic poster. Ca. 92 × 62 cm. The image, an Austro-Hungarian soldier of the Great War sits in the window of probably a train to the front and inspecting the map in the newspaper "Pesti Hírlap", occupies the upper two-third of the poster within a black border. The title "Pesti Hírlap" in red is integrated and positioned across the top edge of the blue background of the image. The text under the image in white and green reads as "a világháború legh?bb krónikása naponta közöl a hadihelyzetet ismertet? pontos térképeket és szakszer? magyarázatokat" (the most faithful chronicler of the world war presents accurate maps and professional comments). There are two known variants of the poster. The other version differs from our copy in the green part of the text, that reads "naponta a hivatalos jelentések alapján pontos térképeket és szenzációs ismertetéseket közöl" (presents accurate maps and sensational surveys each day, following official reports). Our version is the scarcer. Géza Faragó (1877-1928) was the greatest Hungarian master of the graphic art in Art Nouveau style.
