Morris lived in California from 1908 to 1930 as a member of staff of the Theosophical Society headquarters at Point Loma. The last seven years of his life were spent back in his native Wales, during which time he founded seven Welsh theosophical lodges. Morris was a friend of Talbot Mundy, and the two writers often commentated on each other's work in The Theosophical Path magazine. [1] In the verdict of Ursula K. (IRELAND) Original oil painting on canvas, unsigned, with caricatures of Asquith, John Redmond and Lloyd George, 19 1/2 x 30 inches, framed in gilt to 22 1/2 x 32 1/2 inches overall. Fine condition. Roy Jenkins, Asquith, pp. 174-5, et seq . A British political comment on the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. Amid celestial clouds a Union Jack-garbed figure of H.H. Asquith turns a grindstone on which a gleeful John Redmond in satanic wings sharpens a sword lettered "HOME RULE" as an angelic David Lloyd George flies away carrying by the coattails a small Irishman, shillelagh in hand.Prime Minister Asquith introduced the Third Home Rule for Ireland Bill to the Commons in 1912, in part to oblige the Irish, on which his Liberal ministry depended. Redmond, leader of the Irish Nationalists, established a balance of power favorable to the Irish and passage of the bill seemed assured. Lloyd George, (then Chancellor of the Exchequer), aware of the heavily pro-English sentiment of Northern Ireland, and of the political dangers of forcing unwilling Protestants under Catholic rule, induced the parties to exempt Ulster from the provisions of the bill, which finally passed in this form. This painting reflects the situation in early 1914: Redmond, with the aid of Asquith, prepares to sever Ireland from the mother country, while Lloyd George symbolically carries the pugnacious Catholic faithful away from the Protestant sanctuary of the North. French artist, most famous as a sculptor & the preeminent French sculptor of his time, and remains one of the few sculptors widely recognized outside the visual arts community; creator of THE KISS [1886] & THE THINKER [1879-1889] two of the most recognized works in all of sculpture. Undated 7" x 9" ALS [1/2 page, 16 mo., n.d.] in fine condition: In French - Addressed to 'Mon cher ami' - 'My dear fiend' - asking to be given a few more days "so that I am a little less buried in my problems." He suggests meeting on Thursday afternoon, Boulivard of Italy. "We can get together and talk about our business." Signed 'Amitié de votre' - 'In friendship' / A. Rodin.         Cole & Harris Mammoth Uncle Tom's Cabin Co. Five Acts, 12 Scenes, 12 Tableaux. The Play is Given in All its Entirety. [Broadside]

      Erie, Pennsylvania: U.S. Printing & Litho Co., 1914. Approximately 28" x 10". Printed on both sides. The paper is evenly toned. Some edge wear with a diagonal crease across the top right corner. Hand stamp for "Dudley Opera House, Bryant's Pond [Maine], Oct 2" at the bottom of the front side. Exceptionally scarce advertising poster for a classic travelling Tom show. Large illustrations include Eva hugging Uncle Tom, Eva on her deathbed, slaves dancing in the evening, a log cabin, dogs chasing Eliza across the ice (a classic Tom show scene not found in the novel), and most dramatically, a slave with broken shackles praising portraits of President Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Other highlights of the production included a real "dog and pony" show; performances by a brass band, concert orchestra, singing quartets, jubilee shouters, a steamboat race, and buck & wing dancers.         Typed Letter signed, "Paul Poiret

      Paul Poiret Letter on Stationery Designed by Georges Lepape Poiret, Paul. Typed letter, signed “Paul Poiret” dated 28 April 1914. 1 page, folio (8 3/4 x 11"). Eleven lines. Written on Poiret’s Ave D’Antin 26 address with woodcut logo by Georges Lepape prominently in upper left hand corner. The letter is written to M. Beaulieu, director of the Comoedie des Champs Elysses urging him to consider a Poiret protege for an advantageous part in an upcoming play. “Although she does not have the 30 years of theatre experience that would make her a star, I have advised her against accepting a part that would immediately put her on dead end tracks.” Poiret asks that Beaulieu give the girl a part of “l’importance qu’elle mérite...” and Poiret would be very willing to show professional courtesy for anything that Beaulieu might do for her. The only play produced at the Comoedie des Champs Elysses during this period was La Victime by Vanderem & Franc-Nohain which premiered on 5 March and continued through at least 30 May. The World War began in August, closing the theatres. La Victime was a slight and stylish “petit chef-d’oeuvre dans toute l’acception du mot.” It is possible that the actress who was the subject of this letter was the young Vera Vorel who acted the part of a young miss of 25 ans. Paul Poiret (20 April 1879, Paris, France - 30 April 1944, Paris) was a couturier who worked in Paris in the years before World War I. His influence is greater than any other designer of the period, and he is remembered as the premiere couturier of the entire art-deco period. Poiret dressed Ida Rubinstein, Isadora Duncan, Eleanore Duse and Sarah Bernhardt, as well as, many members of European nobility.

Internally, neat ink dedication to fep, some offsetting, half title and coloured frontis present, 185 pp, [3], 12 coloured & 32 B&W illustrations by Heath Robinson. Superb!Robinson, William Heath, cartoonist and illustrator, who from 1908 to 1914 divided his time between book illustration and cartoons for The Sketch, the Strand Magazine, and other periodicals. Charming photographs of the grandson of the legendary financier J. P. Morgan. The first portrait shows the young child (aged two) standing and holding a sailing ship (L. Alman, New York and Newport, R. I.). In the second (aged six), he is posed leaning against a stone bench before a rural backdrop (Bullingham, London). Eldest son of Jack Morgan, "Junius Spencer, Jr., graduated from Harvard in 1914. he served as a junior officer on a destroyer off the English coast in the war, an experience that left him with shattered nerves. Tall and extraordinarily handsome, with the face of a sensitive actor, he became a Morgan partner in 1919. Warmly approachable and possessed of a dry sense of humor, Junius was probably the nicest Morgan-but the most dismal businessman. ... Like his father and grandfather and brother, Junius became a commodore of the New York Yacht Club-the only certifiable Morgan activity that really fit him" (Chernow, The House of Morgan, p. 266)

Gide's career ranged from its beginnings in the symbolist movement, to the advent of anticolonialism between the two World Wars. Als, Cuverville, n.d. [July 9th, c 1914 -1918]. With an original 7"x 9" signed photo portrait by Reiss, Berlin. A particularly important Document & Original Photo Display, double glazed [recto/verso] & framed to an overall size of 21" x 24" [8" 1/2 x 6" 1/4] [8" 1/2 x 6" 1/4] [1" 3/4 x 13"] in a handsome mottled brown antique finish & decorated wood frame, triple matted, gilt filets in three windows. A fabulous letter about Kipling, Whitman, the NRF & the delicacies of translating "Leaves of Grass"; the unnamed recipient, possibly, Léon Bazalgette, [1873-1929] soon to become the noted French biographer & translator of both Whitman & Thoreau & who did title & publish Leaves of Grass, as: "Feuilles d'herbes"; this als, the possible genesis of the title's translation. The first issue of the Nouvelle Revue Française, [NRF], appeared in February 1909 but ceased publication in 1914. In 1919, under the leadership of Gide's good friend, Jacques Rivière, [1886-1925], [champion of: Proust & Joyce], the NRF began again, & featured the works of major Anglo & American writers including Conrad who Gide translated [Typhoon] & Whitman in whom Gide recognized extraordinary genius. Kipling's poem "France" was originally published in 1913. Eng.. Trans: "Dear Friend, / Yesterday, in Paris, where I was spending two days, I gave your address to Jacques Rivière; you will probably receive a letter from him about Kipling's poem on France of which the French newspapers recently published a translation. / You will have certainly found, as I did, this ode of great beauty. The NRF intends to quote it in its next issue and we had thought that perhaps it would need to be retranslated and therefore, quite naturally, we thought of you. If you think there are authorizations to ask for, rights, etc. we would only have to give an abridged version. You would then only choose the best parts since I think one always has the right to give a quote. Rivière would get you the text in case you don't have it. / And this of course, if it doesn't bother you! But I don't think so; it is too beautiful and we cannot let it pass unnoticed. / When I came back I found your letter. You know better than I if "Leaves of grass" is the equivalent of "Brins d'herbe" which I would prefer in this case. The question is the following: does one usually say "Leaves of grass" as we would usually say "Brins d'herbe", or is there a research, a new association of words, which, in this case, "feuilles d'herbes" would express better. / Yours truly, André Gide".         Journal Kept by David Douglas During His Travels in North America 1823-1827 Together with a Particular Description of Thirty-Three Species of American Oaks and Eighteen Species of Pinus with Appendices

      London : William Wesley & Son , 1914 . First Edition . VG . 8VO . Published under the direction of the Royal Horticultural Society. Douglas was one of the great explorer-botanists of the Nineteenth Century and his work, particularly in the Hudson's Bay Lands of western North America made a lasting contribution to the science, perpetuated perhaps most notably by the naming of the Douglas Fir. Thse journals were not published for nearly a century after the journeys occurred. Howe states that they were published in an edition of 500 copies, although there is no statement of this in the book. Guarded portait frontis. In original cloth with the coat of arms of the Society in gilt on the front board. A very lightly worn non-circulating mildly ex-library copy with a label on the front endpaper, stamps at the bottom of 3 pages, white accession numbers on spine. Some sunning along the top edge, some bubbling of the cloth on the front cover near the spine, overall very light wear. Howes D435, TPL 1422, Strathern 150.

Signed & numbered [No. 6 of 26 signed copies in a total edition of 300; binding by Oliver Barwick] "No. 6 / Hommage de l'auteur / Arsène Bessette". Very Uncommon. [In 1914 Arsène Bessette had his only novel, Le débutant, published in Saint-Jean by La Compagnie de Publication Le Canada Français. It is not known if he had shown it to his friends, if the publisher of Le Canada Français had read the manuscript, or if Bessette himself sent the press release to La Presse, in which his work was describ ed as a novel of the soil and an interesting portrait of social customs with most of the action taking place in the countryside. What is known is that the book was dedicated to “fellow journalists, to the sincere and upright men in public life, [and] to all those who have lost their illusions, before or at the same time as their hair.” The dedication was a premonition, for the author would quickly lose his own illusions when the critics ignored his novel. Since Bessette was on the members list of the Masonic lodge L’Émancipation [see Adelstan de Martigny*] published in Le Devoir in 1910, not everyone would have been well disposed towards him, which doubtless explains why the publication of his novel – “the only work of fiction in Quebec literature inspired by Masonic ideas,” according to Roger Le Moine - met with a conspiracy of silence. The fact that the book did not come out in one of the major urban centers is not enough to account for the critics’ indifference; on the other hand, their lack of interest may have discouraged Bessette from publishing the two further volumes that were announced when Le débutant appeared. What is the novel about? Paul Mirot, the hero of the story, and his introduction to journalism, to the world of letters, and to love, was probably a projection of the author. Indeed, Paul has much in common with his creator, for, like Bessette, he is determined, courageous, witty, and intelligent. These qualities led the owner of Le Populiste to hire Paul as a journalist. Soon appreciated by both his employers and his readers, he also wins the heart of Simone Laperle, the beautiful and wealthy cousin of his best friend, Jacques Vaillant. Having become his mistress, the young woman introduces him to society. In partnership with Vaillant, Mirot founds a newspaper, in which he denounces the rigidity of society. He is also engaged in writing a novel that deals with the dangers of nationalistic ideology in literature. The newspaper is censured for its supposedly revolutionary ideas and ceases publication. Mirot’s novel is banned and he loses his job at the newspaper where he is then working. In addition, the death of Simone closes his love life. The novel ends in complete failure, yet the hero remains confident about the future, while attaching no importance to the past. Contrary to what literary critics would assert for many years, Bessette himself did not lose his job at Le Canada français when Le débutant was published, nor was the novel condemned by the archbishop. The writer remained on the staff of Le Canada français until the end of 1917, when he moved to Montreal to work for Le Pays and La Presse. In 1920 he became an inspector for the Montreal Tramways Commission. Arsène Bessette died suddenly on 21 June 1921 while visiting a friend. Notices of his death appeared in several newspapers, but Le Canada français, where he had worked for more than 15 years, had only a short article on the life of this writer who had dreamt of becoming famous but whose passing went unremarked. Yet Bessette’s only book, which was well written and carefully researched with regard to the political situation in the province, was distinctly superior to the other Québécois novels written by his generation. As well, by exploring the theme of free love, it anticipated Jean-Charles Harvey*’s Les demi-civilisés, which would cause a scandal when it came out in 1934. Light external wear, mainly rubbing to the edges and just the beginnings of fraying to the corners and spine ends, good hinges, text block sound with some minor spacing visible between a few pages but with no pages loosened, frontis tissue partially detached with a short edge tears, all plates very good with other tissues in very good condition, three inch tear to half-title along the inner margin, very light scattering of foxing to half-title as well. Engraved bookplate of Daniel F. Levy on the front pastedown, no other names or markings. A very clean and sound copy.

Volume 1 has the front & back cover detached (but present) with chipping around the edges. Light foxing. With volume 2 the text block has pulled away from the the wrappers. BLAST was the short-lived literary magazine of the Vorticist movement in Britain. It had two editions, the first published on 2 July 1914 and the second a year later. Written primarily by the Anglo-American artist Wyndham Lewis and covered by a notorious pink cover referred to by Ezra Pound as the "great MAGENTA cover'd opusculus", the magazine has become famous as emblematic of the first modern art movement in England, and is now recognised as one of the seminal texts of 20th-century modernism Wyndham Lewis (1884-1957), founder of the provocative arts magazine Blast, was often at odds with his sometime co-conspirator Ezra Pound: indeed both men were usually at odds with most of their friends. But they did agree on one thing: that the writers of Edwardian and Georgian England had failed to throw off the deadening literary mannerisms of the previous century. “As for the nineteenth century,” Pound wrote, “with all respects to its achievements, I think we shall look back upon it as a rather blurry, messy sort of a period, a rather sentimentalistic, mannerish sort of a period.” Some violent corrective was needed. The name of Lewis’s magazine was intended to be an explosive charge that would blow away tired literary and social conventions. It was a calculated assault on good taste, both in its contents and, more immediately, in its form: an oversized, bright pink cover with the single word BLAST splashed diagonally across it. Lewis carefully oversaw the details of typography; visually and rhetorically, Blast is indebted to the polemical style of the Italian artist F.T. Marinetti (1876-1944), the founder of Italian futurism. Marinetti’s vivid manifestos for futurism celebrated a modern aesthetic of speed, technology, and power.
