        Oh! James! (First Edition)

      Boston: Little, Brown, 1914. First Edition. First Edition. Fine in a fresh, very close to Fine dust jacket. Jacket is pristine but for the slightest bit of creasing at the crown. Although uncredited in the final production, Edginton's novel is the basis for the stage play "My Lady Friends" (The New York Times, "One Farce - Seven Authors," December 14, 1919). The play, in turn, became the basis for the Broadway musical "No, No, Nanette," which was then filmed twice, once in 1930 and again in 1940. An exceptional copy of a book that is uncommon in any kind of jacket.

        History of Scranton and Its People, Two Volume Set

      New York: Lewis Historical Publishing Company, 1914. The History of Scranton, Pennsylvania and Its People is an outstanding quality set of the most important and valuable study of the history of Scranton and the surrounding area. This first edition set rarely comes on the market, we have never seen this set in such fine condition. These are the must have volumes for those who cherish the history of Scranton and the surrounding area. This huge two volume set was published in 1914 by the Lewis Historical Publishing Company, New York City. The two volumes are in amazingly fine condition. Both volumes have red boards with pebbled leather backing and corners, bright gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Both have stiff marbled end papers and marbled edges to text block and were issued without dust jackets. Volume 2 description follows Volume 1 specifics. Volume 1, an almost perfect copy, shows very light shelf wear to the boards. The very tight binding reflects that the book has probably never been read. The boards are bright, no chipping, rubbing or bumping. Book has frontis, plates, portraits, maps, well presented in 532 pages. There is very minimal foxing early in Volume 1. Volume 1 presents chapters focusing on the genesis and early development of Scranton, the early railroads, the development of coal mining, sketches of early founders, early plat information with infrastructure details, growth between Providence and Slocum Hollow, businesses in the mid-1800's, Scranton's poor district, charities, early amusements, more on early prominent citizens, the church in the development of the city, the medical and legal professions, local municipal organizations, military service, fraternal and secret societies, banks and financial institutions, Scranton Board of Trade, list of postmasters, religious and benevolent associations, the music scene, societies and clubs, famous notable events and newspapers and newspapermen. We doubt you will ever find a better copy of this amazing volume. It is difficult to believe, but Volume 2 is in better condition than Volume 1. Volume 2 boards show practically no rubbing, the gilt on the spine is a little brighter than Volume 1. There is a small sticker on the inside back cover top left, a small ding to bottom of back board, otherwise this book is perfect. Volume 2 sets forth 695 pages of extensive biographies of Scranton pioneers and founders. These biographies are very detailed, with an extensive index at end of book. Volume 2 is not as sexy as the wonderful Scranton history presented in Volume 1, but the true study of history revolves around those making and participating in that history, not just important events. This is why Hitchcock wrote Volume 2 with such intensity. The full page portraits of the prominent pioneers and founders are stunning. As with Volume 1, the almost perfect book and tight binding indicate to us that this book has probably never been read. As with Volume 1, we doubt you will find a finer copy. We specialize in books about Scranton and the surrounding area.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Issued Without Jacket.

        Original copperplates for East of the Sun and West of the Moon;

      [London: Hodder & Stoughton,], [1914]. the illustration entitled "And this time she whisked off the wig; and there lay the lad, so lovely, and white and red... Four engraved copperplates, each measuring approximately 183 × 134 mm, mounted in a row, together with a full-colour pull of the image, framed and glazed. Traces of green patina where copper has slightly oxidised, else fine condition. Original copperplates made for the four-colour separation process used to produce the final image published opposite p. 152 in the book. This remarkable survival shows Nielsen's painstaking artistic technique in building up the four-colour process (Rackham used a three-colour process) to produce the rich and complex illustrations for his deluxe books.

        Letter from Father Stanislaus, dated Sept. 23, 1914 with, possibly, an early photo of the author James Joyce (Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man?)

      Dublin: Letter. 1914. Letter. Very Good. Letter from "Father Stanislaus" dated Sept. 23, 1914 on the stationary of the Franciscan Capuchin Friary in Dublin. With original envelope, addressed to Miss Edie Kelly in Cork, concerning her upcoming marriage. Enclosed is a portrait of a young man identified on the rear as "May 1899, James Joyce, Dublin." Points in favor of identifying this as one of the earliest known portrait of the author James Joyce are: 1) Joyce would have been 17 at the time, entering University College in Dublin. The young man in the picture looks about that age. 2) It's hard to imagine any other young man named James Joyce with a connection to Stanislaus -- the name of Joyce's brother and the middle name of his father -- a distinctly uncommon name in Dublin. 3) This could be addressed to the daughter of a friend of their father's named Kelly, from southern Ireland, near Cork, who was known to have visited the Joyces in Bray with his several children, when James and Stanislaus were boys. However, points in favor against such identification are 1) From all evidence, Stanislaus was teaching in Trieste in 1914, and seems to have no connection with the Friary. In fact, he made a number of anti-Catholic statements in his middle age. 2) The closest comparable photo we could find of Joyce is at age 20, where his distinctive rheumy eyes are readily apparent; he does not look at all like the youth in this photo, except, perhaps, the set of the jaw and the cast of the mouth. A risk, certainly, but possibly a monumental find. Please contact us with any questions.

        RODIN: SA VIE, SON OEUVRE

      1914. Good. [RODIN, Auguste] RODIN: SA VIE, SON OEUVRE. Ouvrage orne de cent trente illustrations d'un bois de P.-E. Vibert, d'apres le buste en bronze de Rodin par Mlle Camille Claudel, et de deux hors-texte, dont l'un en couleurs sur papier d'arches, tire's a cent exemplaires et representant deux dessins ine'dits du maitre. Paris: Editions Artistiques de l'Art et les Artistes, 1914. First edition, limited and signed: This copy is number 84 of one hundred signed by Rodin on the verso of the t.p. Many black and white photographic illustrations throughout showing Rodin and his work, and a wood-engraving of Camille Claudel's bronze portrait bust of Rodin. Regarding the two reproductions of unpublished drawings to be laid-in mentioned on the t.p., one has been bound-in after p. 72 and the other, the color illustration on Arches paper, is missing. The text begins with an introductory essay by Octave Mirabeau, followed by a biography of Rodin, more essays by other contributors, a collection of heretofore unpublished thoughts by Rodin, a census of his works located in France and abroad, and a bibliography of writings about Rodin. [6], 112 pp. Small folio, 30.5 x 21 cm., specially bound by Polly Hemenway in three-qiuarter black morocco with marbled sides, matching endpapers, t.e.g. A note on the first fly-leaf explains that this copy was given to the Russian-born American sculptor Bashka' Paeva' (i.e. Paeff ) by Mrs. Julius Rosenwald, wife of one of the founders of Sears Roebuck, in 1915, and that it was bound by Hemenway in 1917. The volume shows light wear along bottom edges of boards, a small bit of scuffing on upper board, and has been skillfully rebacked in matching leather. It is a clean and handsome copy overall, in very good condition. OCLC FirstSearch lists only five copies.

        Printed broadside: First Time Here: Mexico At War and Peace - Moving Pictures

      San Francisco: Francis-Valentine Co. Show Printers, [1914]. Large printed broadside, 28" x 21" (ca 72cm x 54cm). Vertical and horizontal folds; paper somewhat toned and fragile, with mended splits along folds at center and margins; old clear tape adhesions to verso; a Good, unrestored example. Unbacked. & & Very early nickelodeon-era film poster, advertising documentary footage of the ongoing Mexican Revolution, which by 1914 had reached fever pitch. No venue is specified, but given the imprint, presumably for a San Francisco theater. Text identifies General Venustiano Carranza as "the new Ruler of Mexico," dating the poster to approximately 1914. Rather fragile, but an attractively-printed item. The Francis-Valentine Co. of San Francisco appears to have been active as a printer of theatrical and entertainment broadsides from the early 1880s through the first decades of the 20th century. No copies located in any institutional collection.

      The World: Leonard and Ada Van Noppen, [N. D.]. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $19,000. The original Travel and Signature Diary of Leonard Van Noppen and his wife Adah Van Noppen, bound in the Diary's original vellum. Leonard Charles Van Noppen was a Dutch-born, American-educated, academic and Professor at Columbia University, translator, and Poet, who also served as an American Naval Attache at the Hague and who, as a member of the United States Naval Reserves authored "The Challenge: War Chants of the Allies, Wise and Otherwise". Some of his Poems, along with those of Rudyard Kipling, John Galsworthy, Edith Wharton, G. K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, Henry Van Dyke, Robert Bridges, Thomas Hardy, John Masefield, and others, were Anthologized in "A Treasury of War Poetry: British and American Poems of the World War, 1914—1919". Van Noppen is also noted for his translation of Joost van den Vondel's "Lucifer" into English. Van Noppen and his wife, Adah (who was associated with the Universal Order, a mystical cult), traveled the world and met numerous Literary and Political figures, many of which have signed this Diary, often with inscriptions of various natures. The many signatures and entries include the following: F. Scott Fitzgerald (signed "June 1936 / Scott Fitzgerald"), Willa Cather, Kahlil Gibran ( who wrote "and now let us sing altogether", followed by his signature), Francis Grierson (pen name of Benjamin Henry Jesse Francis Shepard) the author, composer, pianist, and spiritualist, who declared himself to be "...a world famous mystic, seer, inspirational musician, and authority on prophecies, visions, and cosmic consciousness", whose audiences often included Royalty, and who claimed that, in his performances, he channeled famous composers then deceased, Edwin Markham (who signed twice, once under his inscription "We sell our eyes for candles! /Edwin Markham / Oct. 1927") and his wife Catherine, herself a noted children's author and lecturer on child labor and social reforms, Emilie Lind-af-Hageby, a Swedish countess, feminist, and animal rights activist who founded the Animal Defence and Anti-Vivisection Society and who served as President of the London Spiritualist Alliance and who co-authored "The Shambles of Science" which led to England's "Brown Dog" affair, Jessie B. Rittenhouse, spiritualist, poet and editor of Poetry Anthologies, Max Weber, Benoy Kumar Sar Kar - an Indian author, Nationalist, and close friend of Mahatma Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu -- a leader of India's Congress Party who was arrested with Mohandas Gandhi, Eugene Higgins - the American Socialist, Painter, and printmaker, Kathryn White Ryan - who signed under her autograph poem "The Turquoise Bowl", Fashion Designer and Poet Mary Cummings Eudy - who signed under her autograph poem "I Believe", George Grey Bernard, Anatole France, Charles Elkins Matthews, Aldous Huxley who signed beneath his "with good wishes", Alma Reed, E. B. White, as well as a pasted-in card signed by James Thurber, Sherwood Anderson, John O'Hara, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Dorothy Parker. The Diary contains many other signatures, many of which we have not yet researched and many of which have been researched and identified, and comes with a document noting the Diary's many entries and information about many of the signers. The Diary is in Very Good condition, with a large yawn due to the shrinking of the vellum, and with some toning to the pages, one of which is partially loose but holding firmly. Numerous items gathered by the Van Noppens are loosely laid in. Altogether A REMARKABLE GATHERING OF SIGNATURES AND INSCRIPTIONS FROM MANY NOTABLE PERSONS IN ART, LITERATURE, POLITICS, AND SPIRITUALISM. RARE.

        Signed Original Autograph Letter & Photo Display

      n.p. n.d. [July 9th, c 1914 -1918]: Gide, 1918 1947 Nobel Prize in literature. Gide's career ranged from its beginnings in the symbolist movement, to the advent of anticolonialism between the two World Wars. Als, Cuverville, n.d. [July 9th, c 1914 -1918]. With an original 7"x 9" signed photo portrait by Reiss, Berlin. A particularly important Document & Original Photo Display, double glazed [recto/verso] & framed to an overall size of 21" x 24" [8" 1/2 x 6" 1/4] [8" 1/2 x 6" 1/4] [1" 3/4 x 13"] in a handsome mottled brown antique finish & decorated wood frame, triple matted, gilt filets in three windows. A fabulous letter about Kipling, Whitman, the NRF & the delicacies of translating "Leaves of Grass"; the unnamed recipient, possibly, Léon Bazalgette, [1873-1929] soon to become the noted French biographer & translator of both Whitman & Thoreau & who did title & publish Leaves of Grass, as: "Feuilles d'herbes"; this als, the possible genesis of the title's translation. The first issue of the Nouvelle Revue Française, [NRF], appeared in February 1909 but ceased publication in 1914. In 1919, under the leadership of Gide's good friend, Jacques Rivière, [1886-1925], [champion of: Proust & Joyce], the NRF began again, & featured the works of major Anglo & American writers including Conrad who Gide translated [Typhoon] & Whitman in whom Gide recognized extraordinary genius. Kipling's poem "France" was originally published in 1913. Eng.. Trans: "Dear Friend, / Yesterday, in Paris, where I was spending two days, I gave your address to Jacques Rivière; you will probably receive a letter from him about Kipling's poem on France of which the French newspapers recently published a translation. / You will have certainly found, as I did, this ode of great beauty. The NRF intends to quote it in its next issue and we had thought that perhaps it would need to be retranslated and therefore, quite naturally, we thought of you. If you think there are authorizations to ask for, rights, etc. we would only have to give an abridged version. You would then only choose the best parts since I think one always has the right to give a quote. Rivière would get you the text in case you don't have it. / And this of course, if it doesn't bother you! But I don't think so; it is too beautiful and we cannot let it pass unnoticed. / When I came back I found your letter. You know better than I if "Leaves of grass" is the equivalent of "Brins d'herbe" which I would prefer in this case. The question is the following: does one usually say "Leaves of grass" as we would usually say "Brins d'herbe", or is there a research, a new association of words, which, in this case, "feuilles d'herbes" would express better. / Yours truly, André Gide". Signed by Author. Original Autographed Letters. Framed & Glazed.

        Vivatbänder aus großer Zeit

      Berlin, Zum Besten des Roten Kreuz, Verlag von Amsler & Ruthardt, , 1914-17. Folio (480 × 350 mm). Brown cloth album, titled as above on the upper board in black. 101 decorated silk ribbons in fine condition, the first commemorating the outbreak of the War 395 × 100mm, the others 395 × 65mm, mounted in slit-mounts, three per side. Album just a little rubbed at the extremities, otherwise very good. The oldest known examples of this very German tradition date back to the eighteenth century, a ribbon celebrating the victory at Roßbach during the Seven Years' War is recorded, as also one for the taking of Breslau. Originally designed to be worn in a hat-band or pinned to the chest, these celebratory ribbons were also produced to commemorate significant events, such as births or marriages, in the lives of noble and grand-bourgeois families. In 1913 the practice was revived, with examples being issued to celebrate the centenary of the War of Liberation and also the Kaiser's 25-year Jubilee, but it was with the beginning of the First World War that the revival really took off. Publishers produced pieces in commemoration of new campaigns and significant naval and military victories, employing a wide range of striking colours and allegorical or heroic imagery. Usually made in support of charitable causes such as the Red Cross or veterans' organizations, the ribbons were no longer worn but collected, and albums such as the present one were produced for the purpose. Amsler und Ruthardt employed some of the major artists of the time such as Lovis Corinth, Heinrich Vogeler, Peter Behrens, graphic designer Hanns Anker, book artists Georg Belwe and Fritz Helmut Ehmcke, the founders of the Steglitzer Werkstatte, and political cartoonist Franz Jüttner to produce a range of designs reflecting the taste of the period. Corinth contributes a flowing expressive Teutonic knight slaying a dragon printed on a rich cerise; Behrens a stylish illustrative celebration of Mücke's exploits on the Ayesha on horizon blue and Belwe those of the Möwe in similar style on sky blue; Ehmcke offering a souvenir of the taking of Kruševac in woodblock Gothic, maroon on cream. Interest in vivatbänder began to wane in 1916, and by 1917 Amsler & Ruthardt were one of the few companies still producing them, the last represented here relate to the occupation of Riga and the liberation of Galicia. The collection represents a splendid insight into the thematic and visual content of German propaganda in the Great War. It is extremely unusual to find such a full group, in such splendid condition, and presented as originally intended. Contemporary bookplate of Carl Busch to the front pastedown.

I do not know how it got loose -" Shaw has corrected the quote in ink on one copy. The third copy is printed on thicker paper, corrects the title page quote, and includes the copyright slug. Shaw describes it in his inscription, as "- a rehearsal copy, nominally a 'rough proof' -"
